Why XMP Files on Capture and Export

Just curious to know what is the purpose of the 'xmp' and 'xmpses' files that are created when I export from Premiere for DVD encoding.
And I might as well ask the same for the xmp created from captured video files. Are they necessary for editing? Can I put them somewhere else or delete them?

Capture and Export of Mono Audio in FCP HD

I have just upgraded to FCP HD from FCP 3. My problem is all of my audio needs to be Mono only. In v3 this was simple I just chose Mono from the capture settings and Mono for Export.
On FCP HD I can't find any way to capture and export as Mono. When I record Voice Over in FCP all I get is the right channel and even when I set it to pan centre it still only comes out the right speaker after export.
If I've got to manually duplicate tracks everytime it will take me forever.
Anybody know a simple way to capture and export Mono only (the same for both Ch 1 + 2)

This might seem the long way 'round but it may save a ton of time in the end.
Do your FCP mix in stereo as Colin suggests, then take the final audio track into STP or Peak and do a "mix to mono" and then save a new AIFF file with the resulting mono clip.
Then bring that back into FCP on a new audio track, line it up with the stereo, then either disable or delete the stereo tracks. This will give you a true mono audio track.
But where are you going with this content that will handle mono audio? DVDs require a stereo AC3 files. Are you sure you really need a mono sound track?

Use a panoramic photo flash file in indesign and export it to a swf file for flipbook

i haven a 360° panoramic flash file.
when i put this file in indesign and make an export to pdf i can see my panoramic photo.
my problem:
i want to export this file to swf to use it as a flipbook.
but now, my panoramic flash file doesn`t work.
is this possible?

Even when exporting as an interactive pdf.
My problem is that I am trying to figure out how to export my swf embedded file into an interactive pdf.
I have created an interactive presentation with buttons, effects etc. After which I exported to swf so that all the effects work.
But when placing the swf file back into indesign and exporting again as an interactive pdf it doesn't work at all, all I get is a white screen. (I need a pdf for clients basically, they dont want any swf or flash files.)
Even though after placing the swf file, in the media window I ticked play on page load as well as chose a cover image for the swf file. Still just a white screen when exporting.
To repeat, I need to know how to convert my swf file into an interactive pdf.
Any pointers please would be great I have some swf presentations I need to change into pdf as soon as possible or before tomorrow to be exact before our monthly meeting with clients.

Why are files going offline when exporting from premiere

Hi all
I've got a feature length documentary of 2 hours. All files are online but upon exporting from premiere via media encoder the finished file has 'media offline' on some shots. I have NO idea why this is happening. All clips are online on the timeline.
I'm exporting both blu-ray mpeg and dvd mpeg. The project is on an external hard drive. Can anyone help this is a nightmare!?
Will exporting via premiere pro direct fix this problem?

Why does the print module and export lose my develop settings, specifically sharpening?

I am using LR v4.4 When i switch between develop and library/print or try to export, the file loses the sharpening changes. This just started happening so i feel like i might have accidently changed a setting. Please help. I need to send edited files to clients.

It could be just a lag in the updating of the thumbnail shown in the Library. Wait a few seconds and see if it updates.
Since what you see in the Library is just a thumbnail, the data being exported comes from elsewhere and is recalculated each time you do the export.

Multiple file analysis feature and export to TXT

The project i am working on now has 22 songs... basically a double album. It took FOREVER to run the analysis scan on all those tracks and copy/paste the info to a TXT file. Why don't you just supply a feature that does this for a CD project?

35 mm & 16 mm films... how to capture and export?

Ok, I shoot a lot of stuff at school on 35mm and 16mm, then get it telecined to a dv tape...
What is the best way to capture the footage into my computer so I can keep the great picture quality (or, what is the best setting to use since I only have a consumer camcorder at home)?

What are the best export settings to ensure that I keep the best quality I fought for in the above question?
Basically, I shoot some stuff, edit it, and play it back in class and it looks a thousand times worse than it did on the telecined dv tape...and I want to know how to keep that great image.

Shooting on 35 and 16...guessing you are in film school. Chapman? Aren't your professors helping at all? I mean, you are shooting 35mm! That ain't cheap.
Telecining to DV tape? 35mm? Oh, the horror. Well, we telecined 16mm to 3/4"..far worse. And economics and all.
BEST would be to telecine to D5, capture as DVCPRO HD for offline, then as 10-bit uncompressed HD for online...with the use of a Kona 3 capture card and a SATA Raid...but then we are talking bucks here.
If you telecined to DV, simply capture as DV/NTSC. That is the best you are going to get with that format...which ain't great. If you could telecine to DVCPRO HD (if your school had that deck) then that would be MUCH better. But working DV/NTSC would be your best bet.

Why 2 file formats iwork08 and iwork09?

Why do we need to save in a different format keynote files from keynote 08?
Are the differences so big in between keynote 09 and keynote 08, to require a new file format?

There are some new transitions, especially the Magic Move transitions, that won't work in '08. In addition, there is the Reduce File Size option, which may be problematic for '08, since that version relies on having the original images for a presentation. There may also be issues with file format regarding sharing over iWork.com.

It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.

What do you do with source file after edit and export

i wounder what people do with the source file after edit, they are taking up a lot of space on my computer. I can hardly bring myself to delete them, but neither can i save them, beacuse of space on Hdd. have thought of, only export those clip you have used in your timeline, uncompressed?

If you don't need them at all, you can delete them. People usually store them in external drives if they need them.

Wide screen capture and export

Hi everyone.
I'm using Adobe Premiere CS5 and have problem with my wide screen videos.I havent HD cam,just regular dv cam,and i made video in wide screen mode.Can someone tell me what settings i should use to get the best qualitty? I tried DV pal wide but wasnt really great,picture was smaller than screen,and if i strech it,its lower qualitty...tried some more options,but still i dont like it....Maybe it cant be really great without HD camcorder? Why doesn't ExportPDF upload and export my document ?

I've bought a subscription for ExportPDF and I'm severly dissapointed. For the past 30 min I've been trying to upload a 500kb pdf, and I'm stuck in the same menu, with no notifications whatsoever.
There is literally no indication of if and why it is not working or what is happening. I'm in desperate need of converting a document, and just bought a subscription today, and the process seems far less straightforward then it should be. Please help

Unfortunately, I have had the same problem I need to convert a document but it will not let me convert or upload my PDF.I don't know why we have to go through hoops to get support... it does my head in, and not all online trouble shooting helps either...my membership is about to expire and they will be charging me another years subscription considering I only used it twice in the year not sure its worth it ....
They just want everything to run on auto pilot and not have anything to do with helping anyone anymore hopefully some person that has more knowledge of the programs can do the work for them keeping their margins down.
I think they have either changed something or they are not letting on what has happened to the software I tried a few days ago as well.
Sorry I cant help ...but I keep getting an error message....

DNG, XMP, and Exporting

The following pertains to Lightroom 1.1 (and possibly only to the Mac version on an Intel Mac with OS 10.4.10).
I have searched Lightroom 1.1 Help, the knowledge-base, this forum, and elsewhere for simple instruction on how to do either of the following:
Task #1: Create a separate XMP sidecar file from a DNG file for which the metadata relating to picture adjustments made in the Develop module has been embedded in the DNG file or stored in the Lightroom database.
Task#2: Export a DNG file (for which the development metadata has been embedded in the DNG file or stored in the Lightroom database) while at the same time creating a separate XMP file that contains the development metadata.
I did some experimenting relating to Task #2:
In Lightroom, I set the exposure of a DNG file to +4.00 in the Develop module, then switched to the Library module and clicked on the menu item "Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata", and then exported with "Original" selected as the file format. Immediately after this, I set the exposure to -4.00, without updating, and then exported with "Original" selected as the file format. Immediately after this, I exported with "DNG" selected as the file format.
Here's what I found:
1. Looking at the thumbnail preview for each in Mac OS 10.4.10's Finder window: Exports 1 & 2 look like the picture did the last time I clicked on "Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata" (i.e. with +4.00 exposure). Export 3 looks like the picture did at the time of the second and third exports (i.e. with -4.00 exposure). Opening any of these files within Mac OS X's Preview application shows the original state of the file without ANY of the development adjustments made before exporting.
2. Looking at the pictures in Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 (because I have only Photoshop CS2): Export 1 looks like the picture did the last time I clicked on "Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata" (i.e. with +4.00 exposure). Exports 2 & 3 look like the picture did at the time of the second and third exports (i.e. with -4.00 exposure). No subsequent changes occur by going on to open the files within Photoshop CS2 after they are displayed in ACR 3.7.
3. Looking at the pictures after re-importing into Lightroom: Export 1 looks like the picture did the last time I clicked on "Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata" (i.e. with +4.00 exposure). Export 3 looks like the picture did at the time of the second and third exports (i.e. with -4.00 exposure). For a few seconds, export 2 looks like the picture did the last time I clicked on "Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata" (i.e. with +4.00 exposure). Then it switches to look like the picture did at the time of the second and third exports (i.e. with -4.00 exposure). It seems this has something to do with thumbnail previews being already embedded in the files and with Lightroom displaying them temporarily before updating them.
4. All three exports, when re-imported into Lightroom, begin with two snapshots already in the Snapshots panel of the Develop module: "Import" & "Import 2". "Import" is the original file condition when the file was first imported into Lightroom (before any of my export experiments). "Import 2" is the state of the file at the time I exported it, not the state when I clicked on "Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata" (i.e. "Import 2" is with -4.00 exposure) EVEN IF THE CATALOG IS DELETED AND A NEW ONE CREATED BEFORE IMPORTING THESE, THE SAME THING OCCURS.
In none of these scenarios was an XMP file created. This had me wondering whether XMP files were possible at all in conjunction with DNG files. On to...
Task #1:
Now, as I was beginning to think that the only solution for creating XMP files from DNG files was to have Lightroom set up to maintain metadata in XMP files instead of in its own database (i.e. full-time XMP files as opposed to XMP files created only when exporting), I tried to alter settings in Lightroom's preferences, clicking menu

(to Lee Jay: Yes, as I found out.) Here's the rest of my post:
...items and buttons in this sequence: Preferences > General > Go to Catalog Settings > Metadata. Nothing I tried with the settings there would induce Lightroom to create XMP files alongside DNGs.
AFTER MORE WORK WITH JPGs AND CANON RAW FILES (.CR2), I FOUND THAT I COULD CREATE XMP FILES FOR THE CANON RAW FILES ONLY.
My conclusions are:
1. Lightroom writes separate XMP sidecar files for 3rd-party proprietary RAW formats only. This view is supported by the verbiage under these headings in Lightroom Help: "About metadata and XMP" and "Synchronize metadata with Adobe Camera Raw and Bridge".
2. This means that, for other formats, enabling the following catalog settings under Preferences does not result in separate XMP files: "Write develop settings to XMP for JPG, TIFF, and PSD", "Automatically write changes into XMP".
3. Also, for the other formats, enabling these catalog settings either does not alter the files at all or else alters them in a way that shows up only within Lightroom, Photoshop CS3, and any other applications that use Adobe Camera 4.0 or later. My additional export/re-import experimentation with JPGs in Lightroom suggests the latter is the case.
4. In Lightroom settings and documentation, "to XMP", "into XMP", etc. mean "to the XMP data embedded within the file", "into the XMP data embedded within the file", etc., except for those cases in which the associated file format is 3rd-party proprietary RAW, where these phrases mean "to a/the separate XMP sidecar file", "into a/the separate XMP sidecar file", etc.
5. The problem that seems to remain is that, apparently, not all non-Adobe software that can read DNG files is able to view changes made to these files by Lightroom (e.g. Mac OS X Preview).

Help choosing capture,sequence and export settings?

Hello, Im new to Final Cut. Im using final cut pro 6.0.2 and trying to teach my self the basics of this program. I Shoot with a Canon GL2 in the 16:9 setting and I'm not sure what the optimal settings are for the sequence, capture and export settings. Someone recommended the DV NTSC anamorphic for capture and sequence settings which seems to work fine except when I export to QT movie it appears to be displaying in 4:3 instead of how it previews which is 16:9. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's normal. Are you watching it in QT? QT displays square pixels while your movie has rectangular ones.
Go to QT main menu>Window>show movie properties>presentation check box and change *conform aperture*.
