(wifi) broadcom-wl or network-manager trouble not sure

I configurated my broadcom bcm4313 (4727) with broadcom-wl (driver recommanded for my needs by broadcom devellopers), up and running in network-manager (seen there to connect with ...) ... (Checked it with CalimeroTeknik today)
When I connect to my wifi relay (an adhoc by wifi), it try to connect and fail ... (I couldn't use wicd for my needs, as I use multiples connections and AP to make an adhoc that is not possible with wicd and need a gui tools as my gf uses it sometimes or may lend it to make peoples try Archlinux for example ...
Any ideas of what could be the trouble ?

Edit : seem to have made another wifi adhoc of the same name and key, how I change this line : # iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc ???
Yes, your manual configuration worked just fine.
The IP address Gusar refers to, you still have to acquire from the router  - which is at the end of step 4 of the wiki. If it does not work like described in the wiki (#dhcpcd eth0), you have to start the dhcpcd daemon first by
sudo /etc/rc.d/dhcpcd restart
Question 2: You only have to change the interface in the iwconfig line, since your wireless seems to be on eth0:
iwconfig eth0 mode ad-hoc
However, you really dont need to do that since you already connected to the wireless "sharenet" according to your output.
So, just redo the steps and go the steps4 to the end to get an IP. If you see that working, you can ping any internet site to see if it works (or start any browser), as /dev/zero says. (if that works , your wicd should actually also work after network restart).
If it does not work, come back to us with the error you see plus the output of
ip addr
ip route

  • [xfce4] network-manager-applet not asking for Wifi password

I am running XFCE with  the gnome network-manager-applet and kwallet as password storage and I do not want to use the gnome keyring because it is making many problems with my current setup.
There are multiple ways to store passwords in NetworkManager. To save them plain in the config files is not an option for me. So I can put them in a password store or hack them in every time I want to connect.
While the gnome network-manager-applet does not work with kwallet I accepted to do all the hackery every time.
Problem: I even can not hack in the passwords.
If I try to connect the connection is disconnected immediately. The logs say, that "The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files".
    Long story short:
    - NetworkManager needs the dbus service "org.freedesktop.secrets" to read passwords (via password store or via prompt)
    - kwallet does not announce "org.freedesktop.secrets" - this is done by the nm-plasma applet (which I can not run without hacking XFCE)
    - gnome-keyring announces itself as a secret agent but does not work with my setup
Do I need to write my own secret agent which only shows a password prompt and parses the input to NM or is there any option/tool/patch/hack/miracle that I have missed to use kwallet with gnome network-manager-applet or to get a password prompt without installing gnome-keyring?
    Thanks in advance

    add this to your start-up: gnome-keyring-daemon --components=gpg
    Edit: and install gnome-keyring ofc

Update your system - "pacman -Syu".  The clue is that the file you manually downloaded is different to the one pacman is trying to get.

I had to create the networkmanager group because it was not existent but https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Groups#Groups says this group should exist.

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager daemon not loading from rc.conf

    Hi all,
I'm having a bit of trouble getting NetworkManager to load up on system start. Basically I put it in rc.conf like so...
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network netfs crond hal alsa dhcdbd NetworkManager @fam @openntpd)
During the startup it says it starts up successfully, but...
When I load up Gnome the nm-applet doesn't appear. If I try 'nm-tools' as root it tells me NetworkManager isn't loaded. So if I then load 'NetworkManager' as root on the command like then go back to Gnome with my user account, nm-applet appears.
Short of putting NetworkManager into every users' .xinitrc how can I get it to load on bootup?

    Thanks for the reply...
I checked out the command name:
    [andrew@myhost ~]$ which NetworkManager
    /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
    [andrew@myhost ~]$ which networkmanager
    which: no networkmanager in (/bin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/opt/java/jre/bin:/usr/bin/perlbin/site:/usr/bin/perlbin/vendor:/usr/bin/perlbin/core)
    [andrew@myhost ~]$
    So that's not the problem...
and I definitely added myself to the network group because before that nm-applet wouldn't work at all. Anyway, I just double checked and yes I am in the network group.

  • Network-manager-applet not showing up in gnome-panel

I've installed it, but it doesn't show up in the list of things to add to the panel. Adding the "notification area" item doesn't do it either. What am I stupidly forgetting?

    1678 ? 00:00:00 nm-applet
    1730 ? 00:00:00 nm-system-setti
Is there something other than those two that should be running? How would I check?

Ok, I just installed Arch, and I'm really liking it, except for the fact that I can't get NM(NetworkManager) to work. I need NM to connect to my Wi-Fi network. I connects to the wired one when I plug it in. When I run nm-applet, it says "Network Manager is not running"

You should disable the "network" daemon altogether if you plan on using network manager. In the daemons array just put a "!" in front of network

  • Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter not working on Windows 7 64bit

As the title suggests, my laptop (Alienware m17x) is installed with the Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter and Windows 7 64bit Home Premium.  I have had several other driver incompatibility issues with Windows 7, but those I have slowly been able to resolve.  This however just cropped up after two months of successful use.  Yesterday it started failing to connect to the internet, telling me that no wireless connections are available.  I live in a dorm, and everyone else on my floor has successful wireless, including my Ipod Touch, PS3 and XBox 360.  I called Alienware/Dell Support and we spent hours trying to fix the problem and all look well until I rebooted my laptop this morning and the same issue reappeared.  When I reboot my laptop, all I get is a notification that no networks appear in range.  If I uninstall the broadcom chip and let windows install it after a boot up it works until the machine is rebooted a second time.  I have tried over a dozen windows 7 drivers for the chip, and about half a dozen vista drivers and they all have the same results, works on the first boot, fails every time after that

Just registered to say, on an Alienware M17x system as well running Windows 7 Ultimate, here is a link to a solution that worked exactly for me:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/436486-guide-properly-solve-wireless-connection-problems-m17x.html
All I did was section I.a. If the link is down, I copied the only section that I needed to follow out of this guide, in order to get my wireless to work repeatedly without having to uninstall the wireless driver every single reboot. Now it works perfectly,
already connected to a wireless network on startup.
I.a. Disable Device sleep on disconnect
Some newer Nvidia Ethernet drivers have a feature called Device sleep on disconnect. This is the culprit. Normally, it should only put the Ethernet adapter to sleep when the cable is disconnected, but it's buggy and thus kills the wireless connection as
    well.
Follow these steps to disable this feature on your Nvidia Ethernet Adapter:
    1. Open the Windows Device Manager by hitting Win+Pause, then click on Device Manager on the left side.
    2. Double-click on Network adapters.
    3. Double-click on NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller (yes, that's the wired Ethernet adapter indeed).
    4. Click on the Advanced tab.
    5. Select Device sleep on disconnect.
    6. Set the Value to Disabled.
    7. Click OK and wireless should work again (might require a reboot afterwards, but probably not).

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager cannot connect to wifi after suspend

    Hi,
There appears to be similar threads recently, but they relate to no wifi at all. I did some updates today, and now if I suspend or hibernate, network manager cannot reconnect to my wifi. For those using the arch repo kernel the next release will solve this issue. So I suggest waiting for this (no more than a few days) and use the LTS kernel in the meantime (or using a fixed ath9k module if already built).
Thanks for that heiko. I thought that would be the case, hence I just waited.
    Will mark this as solved.

I am have trouble with 2 new 21.5" iMacs losing wifi connection from my network. I have 4 other vintage iMacs that never lose connection. Please help.

This subject has been talked/written about a lot, after Lion was introduced. A solution from Apple has not yet been published, everybody is waiting.
Try for instance https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3734081?start=15&tstart=0, but there are more discussion groups with the same subject: frequently lost WiFi-connections in newer Macs running Lion or up.

  • My new iphone4 connected to the internet fine at the store today, but will not connect to my wifi at home - it sees the guest network, but does not give me a place to enter the password

I just got a new iphone 4 (my first one) and the internet worked great at the store, as well as in the parking lot at the grocery store on the way home - yes I was playing with it!  Anyway, now that I'm home and the store is closed, it won't connect to my home wifi.  It sees the guest network, but it doesn't give me place to put in the password, so I'm not sure if that's why it won't work.  Also, I don't know what settings to put in for the screen that comes after the network choice screen - it has IP Addresses with DHCP, BootP, and Statis (I don't know what any of these are or mean!)  It also has a 'renew lease' button that I have no idea what to do with, and it has a section with HTTP proxy that is highlighted "off" but also has 'manual' and 'auto' options - maybe these are not set correctly?
Very frustrating that there is no manual, and the website doesn't really help with this at all.  Thanks so much!

If you look at the top left of your screen you will either see a 3G (or 4G if you have AT&T) or you will see the wi-fi symbol.  If you don't see the wi-fi symbol you are connecting to Gmail through your cellular data plan, not via wi-fi.
To answer your question, it doesn't happen often but when it does the steps I mentioned above will normally resolve it.  Hopefully you won't have any further problem with this.
