WIFI on the Touch

Hi...
Is connecting to a wifi router the only way to get the internet connection up and running on my Touch??? Is it possible for me to access it using an adhoc network between my laptop(connected to broadband) and the touch, while using a proxy server on the laptop?? The touch detects the network and tries connecting, but returns a message saying it is unable to do so.. But somehow when I open Safari, it asks me to connect and after failing twice i am able to browse sites. However I cannot use other apps like maps, weather, youtube etc.
Ideas,anybody???

Some networks monitor where web requests go, yes. So they can tell where a person went and what they saw.
They wouldn't have much to id the person with (unless the person submitted their name insecurely to some website). If they saved the request headers, they'd know it was an Apple touch that did it.

  • Having a problem with the WiFI and the touch

    Hi guys
First of all, I´d like to say that Im kinda an Apple rookie - this is my first ever Apple product ever, so I my knowledge is somewhere really low...
well, here goes... Happily i bought my new iPod in january stoked about all the cool features such as wifi, videos and so on. So there I was in a really good mood when I first got it up and running and found my 1st hotspot. (I had also bought the january software upgrade for mail and stuff) So then I tried loading a page in Safari and it gives me the message "Server cannot be found" - or something like that, you know - oh well I think, and try to open one of the other programs, but neither of those works... And yeah, Ive tried several networks but same results no matter where.
So, folks, do you have any idea of what could help me? Any help is appreciated!
by the way, in these months im housed in Ecuador - if that changes anything.
    Thanks

Sometimes shutting the ipod down and restarting within the Wi-Fi hotspot works. (holding the on/off button for 5 seconds...)
Other times, i have found I had to go into the network settings on the ipod and toggle the DHCP settings a few times, or telling it to "Forget This Network" which will allow it to try to re-address itself on the network.
There are also some Wi-Fi hotspots that have wireless routers that are not so Mac-friendly... these will sometimes not provide an automatic IP address and must be manually changed to a static IP. If you can look at somebody else's laptop IP settings, usually you can manually configure the iPod touch to work with a fixed IP address that is a similar range to the laptops....
    hope this helps.

  • I can't log onto my WiFi with my Touch

I'm using my Touch, AirPort Express and the remote app to control iTunes and play music through my stereo.
I like it but I'm having some problems. For some reason I can't log onto my own wifi with the touch when I have the wireless network secured, even when I type in the networks password. When I have the wireless security disabled it works fine but when I make the wireless connection secure I can't log on.
Does anybody know how I can solve this problem? I love the set up but it does me no good if I'm vulnerable to hackers. What am I doing wrong?
I don't know if it matters but I have a Linksys router.

I have a PC if this helps.

  • I have an ipod touch it is either a second or third edition and i have just had to restore it to factory setting as it was not working and now the wifi on the device is no longer working. Is there anything i can do about this?

i have an ipod touch it is either a second or third edition and i have just had to restore it to factory setting as it was not working and now the wifi on the device is no longer working. Is there anything i can do about this?

    Is it this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Otherwise:
Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • For some reason, iOS 7 has decided to download on my iPod Touch through WiFi. I didn't request it, nothing is set to automatically update in the Touch settings, or iTunes. It seemed to start downloading when I  synced the Touch. I've disconnected the Touc

For some reason, iOS 6 has decided to download on my iPod Touch through WiFi. I didn't request it, nothing is set to automatically update in the Touch settings, or iTunes. It seemed to start downloading when I  synced the Touch. I've disconnected the Touch from WiFi temporarily. How can I cancel the download, or will there be an option when it's done downloading to cancel the install?
    Thanks for any help...

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Can u use the ipod touch without wifi like the phones do

can u use the ipod touch without wifi like the phones do

That depends on what you mean by "use".
Sure you can use it without wifi. Many apps do not require a connection to the Internet. The iPod app (or Music and Videos apps, I can never remember which the iPod Touch uses nowadays), for example.
However, iPod Touch devices do not include the "cell phone parts" - i.e. they cannot connect to cellular voice or data networks. Therefore, when an iPod Touch cannot connect to a wifi network, it has no way to transceive data with the Internet (short of Bluetooth, but that's a special case and I'm sure not what you're asking about).

  • Songs in the cloud via Match are unavailable on a Touch when not on wifi.....is that correct? Those songs have to be physical files transferred from iTunes to the Touch. Is that correct?

I just wanted to be sure that I understand this correctly. I just subscribed to iTunes Match. I did it before manually transferring over a third of my collection. My device is an iPod Touch. If I am not on WIFI, my device will not have access to the songs that I did not manually transfer to the Touch....am I understanding that correctly?

    Hi,
You are correct. You should download some music whilst you have a wifi connection.

But now I can't find the actual movie...I go to iTunes to purchases and view movies , to downloads and searched the title of the movie...I can see an icon of it and it is in a separate place from other purchases but it says downloaded in faded lettering. Where is it?
If you can't find the movie you downloaded on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, check inside your Videos App

What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • HT1386 I just downloaded the latest and greatest Itunes software for my windows computer and my itouch. My wife did the same. now neither of the itouches will sync and transfer the apps or the music. what gives?

I just down loaded the latest and greatest itunes and Ipod touch software. went thru all the steps, my wife did the same for her itouch on her computer. Hers is frozen, can't complete the restore, mine won't sync all the apps and music to the ipod. Where do I go from here?

    For her iPod see:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
For you, do you get any error messages?
Is there anything different about the apps and music that do sync and those that do not?

  • Can't get my facetime to work with my mac and my wifes i phone touch

my face time does not work with my macbook connecting to my wifes i phone touch and we are in the same room she calls me my mac rings then cuts straight off. My mac will not connect to hers at all

Out of curiosity, are you trying to connect each device using the same account? If so, the devices may be getting confused on which one it's calling from and which one it should be trying to contact. You'd need two separate accounts/numbers in order for this to work.
For example my Macbook Pro's factime connection is using [email protected] as a host, and my iPhone is using it's cell number xxx-xxx-xxxx. If I click on my number from my Macbook Pro, it rings my iPhone for a Facetime. Or if I tap on my email address (associated with Facetime for the Macbook Pro) from my iPhone, it starts the Facetime and my Macbook Pro will ring.
If this is not the right answer, please respond with more detail on how you have your connection set up.
    Cheers!

  • The necessity of WiFi on the iTouch.

I am looking ot buy my first Touch... upgrading from a nano. I live in a rural area, where the Wifi connections aren't plentiful. I want a touch for 'option' of email and web, but also for some the apps that would be very useful to my business/work. My concern is: is it impossible to use the touch if you don't have wifi all the time? I feel if I can't use ANY apps offline, i may as well put the money into a classic.
    any advice?

Many apps work offline. But if a wifi connection is required (and there are many apps that do, such as flights, e-mail, Safari, Youtube, Weather Channel, Google Earth, Pandora, etc.) then you won't be too happy.
I have issues with needing to be connected to wifi...but not enough to make me want to get an iPhone. If a real lack of wifi is a concern, then you're better off with the Classic because you won't be able to use all the functions of a touch all the time.

  • Simple way to get a photo onto the Touch?

Is there any way--including 3rd party app--to get a single photo, or a few pics, onto the Touch? Sometimes I just want to get something on the Touch without the bother of adding it to iPhoto or creating a dedicated folder, copying the pic to it, manually designating that folder in iTunes, etc.
In this case, I have a picture of a menu I found online, and I want to be able to reference it to call in an order when I'm out. Since I can't count on available wifi to retrieve it, I'd like to easily get it onto the Touch for when I need it.

or call it up when you do have wifi, hold your finger on it, and save the photo to your ipod.

  • What's The Best Way to Charge The Touch?

I've been just playing with the touch and its features all day until the battery drops down to below 10% and pretty much shut itself off, and then I plug it in for about 3 hours for a full charge. Is this a good method?
Oh and btw, Ive been cranking about 3 hours of wifi life on mines, which isnt all to bad considering that even with a laptop Im lucky to get 1 full hour!

With any device with a Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Polymer battery, it's best to keep it "topped off" rather than letting it frequently run all the way down. Such batteries only have a limited number of charge cycles, so the more you allow it to run completely down, the shorter the battery life will probably be. So while you should just use it as you need to and don't worry too much about it, don't deliberately run the battery down regularly. For more information, see Apple's iPod Battery FAQ.
