Win XP vs AFP

So all the Macs can connect to server 10.4 using SMB via the Connect to Server, but none of the WinXP desktops can.
Additionally, this series of messages in the log are repeated over and over:
[2009/04/25 05:10:44, 0] /SourceCache/samba/samba-100.9/samba/source/lib/utilsock.c:write_socketdata(446)

Any idea of what may be causing this, and any ideas of how to fix so the XP folks can connect as usual?
Thanks in Advance.

You need to use the Terminal, as a general but very important rule, don't edit anything in hidden folders via the Finder/GUI apps. If nothing else you seriously risk b0rking file-permissions of key files &/or binaries that must have their correct permissions preserved.
The file is in /etc
which is actually a link (sort of "alias") to /private/etc
and there you will find smb.conf
Back it up FIRST before editing it, via:
cd /etc
sudo cp smb.conf smb.conf.bak
and this is a good opportunity to learn shell/command-line editors.
Start with nano but be sure to use
nano -w
to preserve line wraps.

  • Data corruption using a Windows client

Hi, i have installed the MAC MINI with OS X Server Snow Leopard V10.6.8.
My clients machines are all IMACS (all Leopards) with Parallels 6.0 installed to be able to work with my accounting software which is a Win application.
both AFP and SMB are Services installed...
2 problems...  first of all i noticed, the access is much slower compared to a Windows Server and i have no idea how to speed up the access to the data.
The second problem is that quite often while using my Accounting Software the databases become corrupted and everytime we reopen the database, the software has to recuperate the data. Sometimes it takes more time up to 1 hour and sometimes a couple of seconds...
Can we do something cause or else, no matter how much i have paid for the Mac Mini, i will put it aside and go back to my Windows server that i had before.
    I appreciate your help guys
    Thanks
    William!

OK Great. I'll give it a try. Do you know if Putty supports Bonjour over SSH?
I am not sure however you could install bonjour for windows and try it out.

  • Mac/Win users can't logon with AFP, can logon with SMB

We have a couple of users that use and logon with Windows to our macserver 10.4.10. (Active Directory based). These people can't logon with their mac with AFP, authentication keeps spinning. When using SMB they can logon to the macserver.

  • Leo cannot connect to WIN 2000 SP4 Server via AFP!

    Dear folks,
I set up an PowerMac G4 MDD as a first Leopard-Test Machine for our production environment. Mac OS X 10.5 was installed on a clean HD without any old stuff on it.
My serious problem ist that this Mac cannot establish a connection to a WIN2000 Server (SP 4) via AFP.
I am able to enter cmd-K, server IP, and in the following dialogue login and password.
Instead of showing the available shares I get an error -41 (unknown error) an should contact the server admin.
Interestingly, I have absolutely no probs to connect via AFP to another Win2000 machine with SP 2 installed.
Also I tried several manipulations on the appleshare plist file I found here and in other forums. With no luck.
I have no idea anymore what else to try.
With Tiger and Panther everything is fine.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Regards,
    Stefan

I have not been able to reproduce error -41, but I have been able to reproduce a failure to connect on Windows 2000 SP4.
On the windows server, make sure you are using either 'Microsoft Only', 'Apple Encrypted', or 'Apple Encrypted or Microsoft'.
You can check this by right clicking on 'My Computer', selecting 'Manage', right clicking on 'Shared Folders' under 'System Tools' and selecting 'Configure File Server for Macintosh'. It will be on that first screen that comes up.
If you just MUST use unencrypted passwords, or can't access the NT server, you can set the following and it seems to work fine.
Err:~ eb$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afpcleartextwarn" -bool YES
Err:~ eb$ defaults write com.apple.AppleShareClient "afpcleartextallow" -bool YES

  • Word files are locked after being edited on Win machines

I have just setup a brand new mac mini server with Mac OS 10.6.7 Server.
Several Mac (via AFP) and Win clients (via SMB) access files on the server.
    In general, everything's OK.
However, when a Win machine (with Word2007) edits (or creates) a word file, the same file results an error message in Word 2011 when a mac tries to open it. It says, the file is being used by another user - which is not the case, and the same error happens even if the machine that edited the files is switched off. Even if the file is copied, the copy still retains that "locked"-information.
However, when I hit "cancel" and then immediately try to open the file again, it opens without a hitch. And once, it was opened on a mac, I can edit, save, open, etc. as I like. Until, a Win machine edits the file. If a Win machine only opens it, no damage is done.
This is extremely annoying. Anyone any ideas?
One last tidbit: I employed a Win2003 server before instead of the mini and I had the exact same problem. So it doesn't seem to be related to the server. It's really driving me nuts.
    -c.

I have the same problem. I solved it by saving with another name, then removing the old file, and renaming the new back to the original name. Still, after Windows client edits it again, it wont let you save again with a Mac to the same filename. Gladly we have only few files that are edited between Macs and Windows users. But it's still very annoying.

  • Fileserver problems (Win/Mac): file path broken

I'm working in a mixed pc/mac environment. Most clients run Windows, some run Mac OS X, but we're all connected to the same Windows file server.
When I sit at a Mac client and place a picture from the Win server into a ID CS3 document, the path to the photo will look like this (in ID's Link panel):
    PARTITION:Clientfolder:project_folder:photo.tif
    BUT...
When sitting at a Win client, placing the exact same picture from the same source, the path now look like this:
    \\SERVER\partition\Clientfolder\project_folder\photo.tif
Note that the "\\SERVER\" part is not in the Mac path.
This is a problem because whenever we open a document on "the other platform", all links are broken and we must manually re-link them.
I've tried mounting the partition using both "smb" and "afp" protocols on the Mac, but still get the same result.
Any clue as to what is going on is greatly appreciated! :)

    >...the Links panel uses platform specific filepaths.
I think there must be more to it than that. I do not normally work this way, but I just tried it, and I had no problem with the links using this setup:
    Mac - ID CS3 5.0.2 on MacBookPro 10.5.2
Windows - ID CS3 5.0.2 in Parallels on the same MBP running Vista
    "Server" - Windows 2000 sp4 (client)
I created a file on the Mac using images residing on the "server" volume which was mounted as SMB. The link information was a Dennis suggests - "\\Server\Share\Directory\file"
I saved the file, and then opened it under Vista, and there was no complain about the links. Looking at the Link Info, they were also as Dennis described - "Share:Directory:file"
I'm not sure what accounts for our different results, but I'm happy to do any testing with my set up...

  • Data transfer between OSX 10.9 and WIN 7 stops

    Hello,
Unfortunately, I have a problem with the data sharing through SMB.
I can connect easily to my Mac and see shared folders or data. But in attempting to copy files from Mac to Win 7 PC there is an error. The data transfer is terminated after a while. The file used in the test is an MKV with the size of 1.34 GB.
The Mac is accessed from a Win 7 PC with administrator privileges. The systems are connected via Wi-Fi 802.11 n.
The exchange of data between OSX in use of SMB or AFP works without any problems.
Maybe someone has a solution or a tip for me.
    regards

Someone have a solution to installa this file? Thanks so much. P.S. I'm running Kde.

karol wrote:What software is it and where can I download it from? http://www.enigma-tv.com/modules/download/ ?
I see there is an XBMC / Kodi plugin available too.
I've tried the Kodi plugin but Kodi plugin works only if the server is open, the XBMC plugin cannot directly connect to the Dreambox. I need to connect the XBMC plugin to the Enigma-TV Server that is running on another windows computer and  I have to run the Enigma-TV Server in 'Internet control Mode'. I can't use now windows pc and i'm trying to install enigma server on linux with wine. The url of download you have put is the right one, is the first link, you have to click on first image to get the download exe file.

  • "AFP 10.3 download did not pass integrity check 162103.304.450"

We have attempted to download AFP enumerable times on a Dell Inspiron with Win Vista 32 bit.
We have followed so many suggested methods to download and trouble shoot that I cannot remember... 15, 20 or more....
And yes, security/antivirus were always disabled, and adobe uninstaller was used to uninstall any older version(s).
We also attempted to download an older version of AFP with no luck.
WTF mate... we used to use flashplayer on this unit but after adobe and other updates were installed recently, AFP does not work and we cannot download it...
BTW...  no, restoring to an older SRP time does not work either.
    Need help here badly...

I had the same problem. Heres my solution:
    1. Visit the following web page.
    http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14266
    2. Download version 10.3.181.14
    3. Extract and open the folder navigating to fp_10.3.181.14_archive\10_3r181_14
    4. Run the installer flashplayer10_3r181_14_win.exe
    5. After the installation is complete, navigate to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and try again

  • Gigabith connections tiger vs win 2003 server

In my gigabith (certifyd category 6) network I have numerous problems to transfer files from Mac with Tiger 10.4.4 to win 2003 server. After to me it are connected the copy of files leaves correctly, with good speed (40-50MB/sec), but when little lack MB (1/10MB) the connection is slowed down (10-300Kb/sec), and often it is closed with ERROR -36. I have the same problem with 8 G5 and whith SMB or AFP.
Any assistance you could lend would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

we are having the same exact problems. Our Macs are bound to Active Directory and connected via Gigabit. This is happening on machines with 10.3.x - 10.4.5. We authenticate fine, connect to servers fine and transfer speeds are great up until the last bit of the file. It hangs for a few minutes and either makes it or we get disconnected with a -36 error. In Console I keep seeing this:
    Feb 20 12:02:47 username kernel[0]: smbiodrecvall: drop resp: mid 14758, cmd 5
    Feb 20 12:02:47 username kernel[0]: smbiodrecvall: drop resp: mid 14766, cmd 5
    Feb 20 12:02:47 username kernel[0]: smbiodrecvall: drop resp: mid 14774, cmd 5
This one is hard for us to pin down because we just moved facilities so we have new HP gigabit switches, cabling and our domain controllers were updated to Windows 2003.

  • AFP 10.1 freezes in IE8

    Hello there,
I usually do not post anything (like to solve my own problems)but i am out of my options:
My problem is that I am running IE 8 32 bit on Win 7 64 bit OS. Well till few weeks ago It worked just fine till I installed AFP 10,1,82,76.
Well on most pages It plays Adobe content but often it seems to frees my Browser.
Well now the only way to repair it is to kill IE8 en restart my PC. This because ones I killed IE8 nor my Win. media player nor my Skype won't work?
I simply can reproduce the problem going to www.chatroulette.com or even doing Facebook game.
    So What did I try:
Looking at lot of forum’s and try a many hints like deleting MS KB976749 update.
Reinstalling AFP en installing it again. Even whit uninstall_flash_player.exe!
Deleting Skype from my system en following all hints given on support site van adobe.
Well my last chance to solve this irritant (in my opinion) AFP bug is calling you guys for help.
For example Does any of you know how to enable logging on AFP 10,1,82,76? It would be a start :-)
    Thanks in advance...

Hi, ok. I read that link, but the mms.cfg is for developers and not for use on your system. Go to it and right click on it, and delete any files that are in there and then delete for folder. Reboot(restart) your computer.
I think it would be a good idea to Uninstall Flash Player completely, then Install for IE and also Safari.
On this Troubleshooting Guide it gives directions for Uninstalling Flash Player and then look for the section on Manual Installers. There is a link for IE and one for other non-IE Installers, which includes Safari.
Before you run the Uninstaller, disable any appplications that user Flash in the system tray(area near the clock) like yahoo messenger or any of those. Then close all browsers except the one you are using.
After you run the Uninstaller, then Reboot your computer. Then Reboot again, to make sure all old files are removed. Then Run the Installer for IE, then the other Installer. When that is finished, then Reboot Once.
Then go and check your Flash folder and post back the files listed. The NPSWF files, you will need to right click on and then click on Properties to obtain the version numbers.
Let me know if you have any questions.
    Link for Troubleshooting Guide: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html
The 9/27/10 update you are speaking of is a hotfix for a Security Issue.
    Thanks,

  • I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

I want to transfer files from a Win XP PC to a Mac using Time Capsule via Ethernet connection.  Is this possible?

Sure.. the PC connects by SMB.. the Mac connects by AFP or SMB..
But you can simply share SMB directly from the Mac.. there is no need to copy files through the TC. Go to system preference, sharing, and turn on SMB for the folder you want to share files to / from on the Mac.
Make sure you have a common username and password also helps.
If you have a TC already can you copy files to it via the windows machine??

  • Using Mac Office connecting to win 2000 share problems with links in Excel.

I open up an excel document from a win 2000 server using AFP and click on a link and it does not work.
It works using a windows xp pro client and excel.
However, the Mac excel software seems to enterpret the link differently.
    Any thoughts out there?

I think originally Excel uses a date epoch based on January 0 1900 whereas Apple OS uses January 1 1904. There is an option in excel to use the 1904 epoch format but once saved as such you can't return to the Microsoft favoured 1900 format...
When importing into Numbers the date epoch is automatically changed to suit Appe's preferred format (1904). This does not present any particular problem for complete imports, it only fouls up when you try copy/pasting individual dates from one type of worksheet into the other type as you are trying to do.
I suggest you try importing complete sheets and then do the merging within Numbers.

  • Connection with Win 2008 R2 SMB connections

We have a customer that has had several issues with various versions of OSX connecting to shares on a Win 2008 R2 server.  At the moment there is one user testing Snow Leopard and SMB.
Historically they had problems with SMB and started using ExtremeZ and AFP connections.  They are now getting various permission issues and I'd like to get them back on SMB.  However this one test user is getting random beach balling when searching shares.
I know in the past there have been various tips posted but just wondering what the latest best known practises are so I can get him to test some things before we look at migrating the rest of the users.

Not sure if you got an answer by now, but I deployed an S160 running 7.10 in a Win2k8R2 environment without a hitch...
