Window effects besides Compiz?

This is more of a general question, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the wiki.  Say I don't want to install Compiz; is there any way I can still have some (minimal) window effects?  Mostly I would want it to make a nice minimize effect cause the default one now is just kind of old school (which I guess isn't always bad).
Thanks.

Yeah, you can read about thiS:

  • A third effect besides aladin and scale?

Hi there. I was just told that there is a hiden third "diminish" (I dont know what the correct word is) window effect. In the dock preferences there are only shown the aladdin and sclae effect.
¿Does anyone know if this true? ¿How can i activate this third effect? Thanks.

    I found this discussion:
"That effect has been in OSX for a while now, they just didn't put it in the menu for minimise effects... I guess they just didn't like it.
Anyhow, to enable it get hold of Cocktail (a good system maintenance app) and you can choose from all three minimise effects there - Genie, Scale and [apple don't allow this word, but it begins with an 's' and rhymes with tuck] In.

  • [SOLVED] desktop effects and compiz

    Hello all,
Recently rebuilt my system with Arch 32, had 64 on it and mucked it up.  Everything appears to be running smoothly, at least as can be.  I do have a few questions regarding compiz and other desktop effects.
Whenever I run compiz, it will eventually crash, stripping all borders off windows and I cannot do anything, cannot click anywhere, though I can navigate any open apps on my desktop, just cant bring down menus or such.  the only way to fix is a reboot, and a good thing I have been keeping terminal up.
Which brings me to my second question, I have my terminal set to a transparent background, however, the background in terminal is only semi/quasi transparent, meaning my desktop shows through the window, which is great, but when I move the terminal windows over another window, Firefox or Chromium for that matter, the browser doesn't show through terminal but instead my desktop still shows through the terminal.  My ubuntu system at work works as expected, meaning when I drag my terminal over other windows, the windows show through the terminal not my desktop.  Is there a setting in Arch that I'm missing, or do you know if Ubuntu does some other smoke and mirrors trick?
I have an nVidia 9800GT video card and I installed the drivers, X, and Compiz per the wiki's instructions.
any help would be appreciated, would like to get compiz running smoothly without crashes, which is possible since my ubuntu system has never had compiz crash *knock on wood*.

It sounds like your terminal is using fake transparency i.e. reproducing the desktop background while true transparency is using ARGB visuals (and needs a compositor WM).
If you want your terminal to be truly transparent and it doesn't provide an ARGB visuals option, you need to set a custom matching rule in compiz.

  • Kde-window-decorator in compiz

    Hi,
Where is the package for kde-window-decorator?
The wiki just says to type it into ccsm: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … Decoration
Ive tried installing compiz, the kde deps, rebuilding compiz after deps were installed, tried to locate kde-window-decorator using pkgfile, and looked at the pkgbuild/build options for compiz. It's almost as if this is not an option, as there is a total lack of documentation on kde-window-decorator.
Am I totally missing something obvious or does this binary not exist?

From the wiki: "The GTK Window Decorator and the KDE Window Decorator are included in the Compiz source and can be optionally compiled whilst building Compiz. Emerald, on the other hand, is a separate, standalone decorator."
You didn't say which package you were using. But for compiz or compiz-bzr change:
    -DBUILD_KDE4=Off \
    to
    -DBUILD_KDE4=On \
Then rebuild. Then you can specify the command in the decoration plugin as per the wiki. It's not documentated because it goes pretty much unused these days. After all, it relys on Kwin (provided by kdebase-workspace, not the Kwin for Plasma 5) and as Kwin has all of the effects Compiz has, why bother with Compiz?

  • Window moving with compiz lags with geforce 9500gt

    hi,
i bought my new computer: amd athlon II x2 250 3ghz, 2gb ram and club 3d geforce 9500 gt 1gb. its working really well and fast, but i have a problem in compiz when i try to move window i see that movement kinda lags. in kde with kwin effects window movement is totally smooth. anyone know what might be the problem? im using up to date system with nvidia proprietary driver.
    thanks.

    Hi
Enable loose binding by either right-click on the fusion-icon > compiz options > check loose binding or
    compiz --replace --loose-binding
Next open ccsm, general options > display settings, disable detect refresh rate and manually set it to twice the amount of your screens refresh rate (that also helps with tearing), enable sync to vblank in compiz only but not in nvidia-settings.
Now go to utility and enable workarounds, make sure that force synchronization between x and glx is enabled as well.

  • [SOLVED] Highlight Window effect doesn't work

    Hello
I have KDE 4.4 installed and it's working really fine, with one exeption: The desktop effect "highlight window" is not working, no mater what I try (disabling all other effects, enabling just a few, disabling and reenabling compositing). Nothing helped!
The other "related" desktop effect, where you can maximize windows by dragging them to the borders of your screen, is working like a charm, also the preview of a window in the taskbar (if you hover over it with your mouse), all fine.
    But not "highlight window"
Does somebody know what to do, where to look, what to try?
    Thanks
    n8schicht
EDIT: Never mind, I just realized I had to go to the task bar settings and enable "Highlight windows" there, too
    Last edited by n8schicht (2010-02-11 09:06:09)

Go to 'System Settings' -> 'Application Appearance' -> 'Style' -> 'Fine Tuning' and change 'Menubar style' to 'Only export'. Just checked, works fine with qt applications.
I'm not sure about gtk apps, though. I recall reading somewhere that, in addition to installing appmenu-gtk and its dependencies, one needed to specify something in the .gtkrc and/or .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file(s). Well that or my memory might just be playing tricks on me.
    EDIT:
If for some reason gtk apps refuse to export their menus, you might want to look at this webupd8 article. Good luck!

  • XFCE, window effects and other questions.

I really like XFCE mostly because it has what I need and it is really fast.
Anyway, first I have activated a few effects and that is to have my inactive windows transparent and all windows titlebar it all working good. But is there any way to exclude any window from the transparency stuff?
Another thing is that I have pidgin installed to use ICQ and MSN works nice, But is it posible to hide the "taskbutton" for pidgin on the task/window list that is normally at the top of the screen? And maybe also from alt+tab/middle-click menu.

McZ wrote:Anyway, first I have activated a few effects and that is to have my inactive windows transparent and all windows titlebar it all working good. But is there any way to exclude any window from the transparency stuff?
I don't think there's any way to do it within Xfwm, but you could try devilspie. It's in [extra].

  • [CS3] Dual monitor : disable Flash interface windows effects (shadows   & transparency)

Sorry to "up" this question this way, but I've been on
    holidays and this
problem is still a real pain for me !
I'm trying to work both with Flash and Director on a dual
    monitor.
Director is quite tricky because you have to extend the
    "background"
window so you can put your menus on the second screen, but it
    works very
    well afterwards.
While Flash should be a dream to use because you can freely
    put windows
anywhere, every window on the second screen is awfully slow
    (takes
    seconds to move them).
I'm sure it would be a lot better if I could, at least,
    disable those
    effects.
Before you ask, I use an old S3Virge PCI card for my second
    monitor...
Sorry, can't find any better PCI card...yet.
    Thanks in advance.
    PJ

Well, I bought a nice Matrox Mystique 220 in a car boot sale
    and it's
much better, as long as I don't move windows (takes 3 seconds
    to refresh !)
The card's got nice and stable resolutions, by the way !
I still would like to disable transparency, though...

  • [SOLVED] xfce4-panel: Window buttons w/ Compiz

Hi, I've successfully done the seemingly daunting task of getting Compiz to work with XFCE. Everything appears to be set up, got my keyboard shortcuts in order, etc., however I don't like how the xfce4-panel's Window Buttons behave when running with Compiz. I have specifically set it to show only windows visible on the current desktop (or as Compiz calls it, viewports), but it looks like it still shows all windows from all viewports, as if like it treats all of them as one big desktop. I know this is a problem with xfce4-panel still thinking that it's communicating with xfwm, but I do like to resolve this annoying pet peeve. Are there any workarounds/fixes/patches for this that could help? Thanks in advance.
    Last edited by qtcaroline22 (2012-05-17 01:53:05)

I made Compiz autostart with XFCE using the first method with the Fusion icon as described in Compiz's Arch Wiki article. Perhaps it is related to Xfwm and Compiz running together? I'll try the other methods and see if the problem persists.
EDIT: I fixed it, I just followed the solution on this thread and everything works perfectly now. Seems like Googling with the right keywords will almost always point me to the solution.

  • HOW do I create a NICE enlarged image in a window EFFECT? CS5

Maybe a long unnecessary title but I'm not sure how to describe it, and I can't find an example at the moment.
Basically, I would like to create little image thumbnails which when clicked on bring up an enlarged version of the thumbnail. Basic I know, but rather than just having it load up in a pop-up window like you can do with behaviors in Dreamweaver, I would like the enlarged image to appear in a window which expands out from a small rectangle/square to a large rectangle/square (kind of like an animation) and THEN the image appears in this lovely display window.
    How is that done?
Maybe I haven't explained this very well. In the meantime I will have a look and see if I can find an example to better explain what I mean.
    Thank you.
    Ian.

You're looking for a AJAX "Lightbox" style script. These are quite common these days, and started with the original Lightbox JS script. They've since evolved into related projects like Thickbox, FancyBox, Lightbox 2, etc.
Here's a round-up of the different available scripts (plenty more are out there if you Google "lightbox script"):
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/05/18/30-best-solutions-for-image-galleries-slideshow s-lightboxes/
    The way these work are:
You place a script or two (sometimes your lightbox script and the jQuery JS package) in a folder on your server
You then link these scripts in the head of your document
You add your thumbnails to your page, and link them to the larger images
You then add some type of attribute to each thumbnail, such as a class like "lightbox".
When you click the thumbnail, instead of getting the larger image it triggers the lightbox script. Most all of the scripts have either instructions on setting them up, or a demo where you can view the source code. What I used to do is download the script, which almost always has a demo file in the download package, and open that up in Dreamwevaer to reverse engineer. It's not as complicated as it first looks.

  • Dynamic frosted window effect

Hi, I need to have a sprite that acts as a blur filter for whatever is below it... i.e. if its a square on top of a photo, then the photo is blurred underneath the square, but nowhere else. I've seen a few examples where displayFilters were used to create ripple or colour effects, but none that just blurred the image below.
    Any ideas?

Thanks, that's exactly what I need (I think) but I'm having trouble

throws an error saying it expected two arguments and got none... Any

I would recommend this be put on the Wiki, honestly. Even if it's only needed as a temporary fix till upstream resolves it, instructionals (in my understanding) are often better placed on the Wiki than on the BBS.
