Windows 7 deployment with unwanted updates

Hello! I have been deploying with MDT for some time now. My method is to fully update my golden image then run a TS to capture it. When I deploy that WIM in a new TS everything works and comes out fully activated with all post installed applications/configurations.
One issue I do have is that we administer the updates for our clients. They are not able to change any settings for Windows Updates. I have set "protectmypc" parameter in the answer file to 3 to disable the updates but am still getting updates in
queue. Since Group Policy disables settings for the updates they cannot be removed. Where in the process does these updates get checked for and how do I stop this from happening? My TS does not allow this due to the post task being disabled. Someone has to
know what is going on. Regards,
Joseph N. Sunderman | IT Professional

Hi,
How did you write the tab? It shoulbe be the like this below instead of "protectmypc".
<OOBE>
   <HideEULAPage>true</HideEULAPage>
   <NetworkLocation>Other</NetworkLocation>
   <ProtectYourPC>3</ProtectYourPC>
   <SkipMachineOOBE>true</SkipMachineOOBE>
   <SkipUserOOBE>true</SkipUserOOBE>
</OOBE>
In addition, If you use group policy to achieve this, follow this:

    Question
I used to be able to copy or drag and drop links from the address window. Now with the update, only the address is copied or dragged not the link. (Says something about not giving site information). I want to be able to drag and drop or copy links.

To be more precise, you can setup a JComponent or JPanel on top of your JavaFX nodes that has a TransferHandler that can convert the (AWT/Swing) images dragged to the app to JavaFX image and then insert it into the underlying node.
As for the file chooser itselft: ListView and the JavaFX composer can allow you to create one quite easily. TreeView can aslso be used to a lesser extend (still a big buggy). For both of these, there are small bugs in the Cell API that may (or may not) prevent from displaying a proper thumbnail in the cells.
You can also use a regular JFileChooser if you do not mind the dialog box having a different LnF from the rest of your application.

  • Best practice for managing a Windows 7 deployment with both 32-bit and 64-bit?

What is the best practice for creating and organizing deployment shares in MDT for a Windows 7 deployment that has mostly 32-bit computers, but a few 64-bit computers as well? Is it better to create a single deployment share for Windows 7 and include both
versions, or is it better to create two separate deployment shares? And what about 32-bit and 64-bit versions of applications?
I'm currently leaning towards creating two separate deployment shares, just so that I don't have to keep typing (x86) and (x64) for every application I import, as well as making it easier when choosing applications in the Lite Touch installation. But I know
each deployment share has the option to create both an x86 and x64 boot image, so that's why I am confused.

Supporting two task sequences is way easier than supporting two shares. Two shares means two boot media, or maintaining a method of directing the user to one or the other. Everything needs to be imported or configured twice. Not to mention doubling storage
space. MDT is designed to have multiple task sequences, why wouldn't you use them?
Supporting multiple task sequences can be a pain, but not bad once you get a system. Supporting app installs intelligently is a large part of that. We have one folder per app install, with a wrapper vbscript that handles OS detection. If there are separate
binaries, they are placed in x86 and x64 subfolders. Everything runs from one folder via the same command, "cscript install.vbs". So, import once, assign once, and forget it. Its the same install package we use for Altiris, and we'll be using a Powershell
version of it when we fully migrate to SCCM.
Others handle x86 and x64 apps separately, and use the MDT app details to select what platform the app is meant for. I've done that, but we have a template for the vbscript wrapper and its a standard process, I believe its easier. YMMV.
Once you get your apps into MDT, create bundles. Core build bundle, core deploy bundle, Laptop deploy bundle, etcetera. Now you don't have to assign twenty apps to both task sequences, just one bundle. When you replace one app in the bundle, all TS'es are
updated automatically. Its kind of the same mentality as active directory. Users, groups and resources = apps, bundles and task sequences.
If you have separate build and deploy shares in your lab, great. If not, separate your apps into build and deploy folders in your lab MDT share. Use a selection profile to upload only your deploy side to production. In fact I separate everything (except
drivers) into Build and deploy folders on my lab server. Don't mix build and deploy, and don't mix Lab/QA and production. I also keep a "Retired" folder. When I replace an app, TS, OS, etcetera, I move it to the retired folder and append "RETIRED - " to the
front of it  so I can instantly spot it if it happens to show up somewhere it shouldn't.
To me, the biggest "weakness" of MDT is its flexibility. There's literally a dozen different ways to do everything, and there's no fences to keep you on the path. If you don't create some sort of organization for yourself, its very easy to get lost as things
get complicated. Tossing everything into one giant bucket will have you pulling your hair out.

  • Windows Azure deployment with Eclipse plugin

    Hi everybody!
I want to deploy a windows azure deployment project.
    Here is my problem:
When i create the project there is no samples folder, so i can't edit my startup.cmd to make it run. I don't know how to edit the startup.cmd by my own. I am using tomcat 7.0.34. I would need a sample how to write the startup.cmd to make my project run.
It would be great if you could show me an example of a startup.cmd for tomcat and explain what's going on there.
Another thing i want to ask is if i have to join the zipped jdk folder to the approot folder or the jre folder. I have seen both ways in different tutorials and this confuses me.
I hope you can help me!

  • ICloud for Windows stopped working with recent update

I had been using iCloud for Windows (Windows 7 64 bit) version 4.0.3.56.  I received a notification that there was an update and so I accepted the update (by mistake). It updated to version 4.0.5.20.  As soon as the update ran, and I tried to use the icloud Control Panel to set up the syncing of my mail and contacts I ran into trouble. I received the dreaded "Your setup couldn't be started because of an unexpected error."
I tried to restore my pc to a previous restore point, but, that didn't work.  So, I completely deleted the icloud software, rebooted, and downloaded the new version and reinstalled it.  That didn't work either.  Now, I am completely unable to sync my outlook 2007 calendar with my icloud.
I called Apple support and was told "Tech is working in it."  I would like to know when there will be a fix... I'm sort of hosed trying to keep track of multiple calendars without being about to use my outlook that I also use for business.

i wanted to add that I had been using 4.0.3.56 for 1 1/2 years flawlessly.

  • Unexpected restarts when deploying Windows 7 and Office 2010 updates

    Hi
I am deploying Windows 7 and Office 2010 updates via SCCM 2012 sp1 and have a couple of questions
    Question 1)
The updates are made available to clients at 9am on a Tuesday morning.  The users get notification that updates are available to install.  If the user doesn't install the updates, the client will wait 24hrs and then install the updates automatically.
We have set the restart behaviour to 24hrs, so again, the user will get a pop up saying that their machine will restart in 24hours.  In my testing I have seen no more pop ups appear until 15 minutes before a restart is due and then a window appears
with a count down of 15 minutes but I think this might be standard behaviour.  I am not sure why there are options in the client settings to remind users frequently about the impending installation of update but not of impending restarts.  The
reason we delay the restart by 24hrs is to give the users the chance to restart their machines over night.  Is there a way of providing more notifications of computer restarts ?  The User Experience in the deployment of the updates is set to
Display in software center and show all notifications.  We have Group Policy set to Not Configured for Windows Updates apart from the user policy
Remove Access To All Windows Update Features which is set to 0 - Do not show any notifications.
    Question 2)
Another issue we have is that we have client machines restarting without any warning at all.  I have tested setting the user experience to suppress restarts but have the issue regardless.  It appears that this happens if the client
is off when the deployment schedule reaches its deadline and the restart time is missed.  I had one user who did restart her machine because she was prompted to restart.  When the machine came back up it looked like it installed another update and
then just resarted without any warning.  This hasn't happened often but a one user was on a Lync call when the restart occured and she was not happy.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Daniel
I have done an RSOP on a VM I am testing and only have the user policy :
Remove Access To All Windows Update Features which is set to
0 - Do not show any notifications.
    And the machine policy :
Specify intranet Microsoft update service location which is set to
Enabled The GPO Name is Local Group Policy
    The policies look OK.
As a test I have deployed some updates and set the user experience to
Display all notifications and set the Suppress restarts
for both Servers and Workstations.  When I deploy the updates, I get notifications that the updates are installing (when the deadline is met) and then I get a prompt telling me that a restart is required.  I also get a windo letting me restart now
or I can ask to be reminded in x number of hours.  This seems like expected behaviour.  It does not force a restart.  However if I leave the VM on over night I come in the following day and can see it has restarted.  looking at the WindowsUpdate.log I
can see that at 3:15am the line AUInvoking reboot system.  It looks like Windows Updates and not SCCM is forcing the restart.
    Thanks

  • Sweet - MDT Update 1 UDI Success - However, "Windows 7 Deployment Complete" dialog hatred

    Hi,
I am using MDT Toolkit Update 1 integrated into SCCM 2007 (R3 SP2) to create Windows 2008 R2 OS deployments.  Recently, I was asked to have the ability of the engineer deploying the OS to be able to choose what applications get installed as part of
the build.  Thaaa... I thought, this may be a problem. ...  Then I discovered UDI and became very happy.
Anyway, it seems UDI was really geared toward deploying Windows 7...but its working for Windows 2008 R2 too (at least, in my environment).  I was able to use UDI to present the diaglog box for the engineer to pick what applications that want installed
as part of the build without any problems.  However, at the very end of the OS deployment, a deployment complete dialog box is displayed...
"Windows 7 Deployment Complete"  - with three tabs...
Actual screen shot of this dialog box:
    http://andysal.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/12.png
    1) Is there a way to disable this diaglog?
    2) Is there a way to change this dialog to say "windows 2008" instead of "Windows 7?
    Thank you...

    1)  Yes, just disable the "Run OSD Results" step in the task sequence.
    2)  Yes, you can edit the OSDResults.exe.config file to change the text and images displayed.

  • Deploy Internet explorer 11 with latest updates using SCCM 2012

    Hello,
I'd like deploy IE11 with the latest updates included. The reason is that I want the IE 11 enterprise mode to be available as soon as IE11 gets installed.
I don't want to wait an update scan cycle to trigger the installation of the updates.
What is the best way to achieve that using SCCM 2012 ?
    Regards,
    Michel

    Hi,
You have to capture the installation package with latest update by using IEAK 11 on the computer which has the IE11 with this feature.
    GP to enable this feature:
Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Let users turn on and use Enterprise Mode from the Tools menu
This is only for Windows 7 computer.
As I mentioned above, for Windows 8.1, we can only deploy Windows 8.1 update 1 to add this feature to IE11, since there is no separated update can be installed for IE11 on Windows 8.1 to implement this.

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • BootCamp Update 3.2.  .exe file, Windows 7 uninstallable with cordless mouse until drivers in.   What next then?

Trying to get windows 7 to run under iMac. I am learning to fly and the best flight simulator (I'm told) is still FSX which does not run on the iMac which I made my main computer infrastructure last year.  And besides it's got the best screen in the house.  Before buying both a virgin copy of Windows 7 (expensive) and of FSX (ditto) I checked the forums and there are definitely people saying it works.
My iMac has a cordless mouse and a cordless keyboard.  I have read that the latest software which makes these work is in BootCamp3.2.
I quote from the apple pdf on installing windows:
Step 1 : Check for updates.  In Mac OS X go to http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp and check whether you need to update your software before you can install windows.
Yes I do.  Can't call that URL very helpful on file selection, but OK, I worked it out.  (Though could someone tell me if ALL intervening updates need to be applied.  I had no way of telling where the full set of updates was, so I had to assume installing the latest would work.)
OK - so I need to install BootCamp_3.2_64-bit.exe
But having downloaded it, if I run it it opens in a text editor.  Why is that?  Explanation will help.  But why is there nothing at Apple on this?  It's apple software.
Searching I found people sounding equally confused, and someone says you'll need to burn it to a disc.  That took a fair while too - but I did it.  I found the help on burning very poor.  It's hard to find how to put a file on a disk.  The defaults are all for music and films. (Tip - use Finder, not other options, when you put a blank disk in)
So I now have the bootcamp upgrade file on a DVD.  I learn (slowly) that because it is a .exe it must be run from Windows.  But I have not got windows, that is what I am trying to load.  And when I load the Windows Disc I can't get very far, because it can't cope with a cordless mouse, until the drivers are upgraded.
I am now worried that things will get worse, because the rest of the forums say you can't make Boot Camp Assistant work when there's already a partition made.  And, there is.  I made one before being trapped by a driverless cordless mouse.
I have an iMac 2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7.  8Gb 1333 MHz DDR3.  ATI Radeon HD 5750.  A cordless mouse and keyboard.  I Bought Windows 7 Home edition 64 bit.
I'm a bit disillusioned.  I bought this hyper computer to run some number crunching simulations via an Oracle database.  The setting up was 10 - 20 times more difficult than setting up Oracle on my Dell laptop.  The simulations ran half as fast as on the laptop and appeared to be frying the iMac's own hard drive.  So I stopped.  I flirted with Times Ten - but it was unsuited to my codebase (not Apple's fault) and then gave up.  So this lovely computer is now used by my daughter to watch movies.
This is the second attempt at doing something moderately serious, and both have been very disappointing.  If you think it's worth saving someone who is about to give up on Apple completely and leave this powerhouse to an idle life of Facebook, then your assistance will be sincerely appreciated.  It's been 6 hours, a very irritating six hours, so far.

You really really do need to read the Windows 7 FAQ the Boot Camp 3.0 Installation and Setup guide for 10.6  and the Boot Camp 3.0 MacOS 10.6 FAQ  a couple of times to really get to know the whole picture.
"Boot Camp" is just a basic set of WINDOWS drivers to run Apple hardware. You install Window first, via BCAssistant to start it, then after it finish's the install and restarts into Windows then you insert the "whatever you made disk" with the Boot Camp drivers on it, it should then give you an installer window, just like on the Mac side, if you want to "Run" it or "Open as a file". (Run it)
The Apple Software Updater updates ALL the Apple files including BootCamp Assistant on the Mac, it updates the Boot Camp Assistant to look for the latest drivers to use when it gives you the option to download the files onto whatever you want to use to download onto.
BTAssistant to partition the drive, then it will boot off the Windows installer, there is no more Mac control, it's ALL Windows now, have Windows format it the way you want, then it will finish by restarting into Windows, then you install the drivers while booted in Windows.
You need a wired mouse AND keyboard just like the instructions said. If you have the earlier Magic Mouse then they suggest you plug it into the keyboard instead of the computer.
If you partitioned like the instructions said, via Boot Camp Assistant, you can install Windows anytime you want, it won't forget it's there. YOU just have to remember where it is.
If you do have problems with the partition then at the bottom of the instructions it tells you how to restore the partition back to normal then you can start over.

  • For those who run Windows 8 with bootcamp: Do you update windows 8, with windows update? I have the latest bootcamp drivers, and never checked for updates on windows. Do you normally update windows 8?

Windows 8 has been running very well after installing it with bootcamp and its latest drivers.
I just have never updated Windows 8 itself, (windows has never checked for updates), and just has been
using it bare. Do you update windows 8 to the latest updates with windows 8, and have any problems
with the updates? Just curious before I start updating it for once.

You have to update Windows to the latest version with Windows Update and keep it updated, because this is a matter of security. Microsoft provides a lot of security updates and you have to install them even if you have got an antivirus. Then you can find other updates, and if you want to install Windows 8.1, just install all updates with Windows Update, and then go to the Windows Store and download Windows 8.1.
Apple says that Windows 8.1 is not supported by Boot Camp, but people say it works without any problem with the most recent drivers, so I do not find any risk after upgrading to Windows 8.1.
