Windows 8.1 hangs in Windows Update trying to get driver

We have added a Surface Pro 3 running 64 bit Win 8.1 to our home network.  Our desktop running XP has an HP LaserJet 1200 printer attached via USB and it is shared. Our notebook running XP has no problem printing to the LaseJet 1200. On the Surface when trying to add the printer Win 8.1 finds the LaserJet 1200 and invokes Windows Update, presumably to download a 64 bit driver for the printer. Windows Update hangs, that is runs and does not stop. We've let it run for nearly an hour before ending it. I've looked at the HP site for drivers and it seems to imply that Windows Update is the correct way to get th driver we need. Is there another way to do this?

  • Windows update process deletes a driver

    Hello,
    Windows 7 SP1
Our antivirus (TrendMicro OfficeScan 11)has some specific driver in "\system32\drivers" folder. For some reason this driver will get removed after "patch tuesday". Not every "patch tuesday" but sometimes. Does anyone have a
glue what might happend? Does anyone have an idea what triggers this removal? After patching Windows,  this file is just deleted and AV complains that it can not load this driver. TrendMicro support says that this must be a OS problem, not AV problem.

    Hi,
Personally, I recommend you enable restore point in a machine to test this issue, we need to find out whether it it the "Windows patch" that causes this issue. As I know, Windows updates have been passed many tests before they're released
to the end users, they should not cause any issues.
Meanwhile, have you tried to reinstall the TrendMicro OfficeScan 11 as a test? or contact the TrendMicro support and see if they have any ideas about this issue

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up. Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?
From your log snip-it, it looks like the firewall is causing your problem. Temporary turn off the firewall and see if that solves your problem.

  • Windows update on windows 7 laptop will not work

Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.
I am receiving the above message every time I click the ' check for updates' icon. Restarting does not resolve the problem.
I have trawled the internet and found a solution that worked for several people- going to services.msc, closing windows update,
deleting files in c:\windows\software distribution, reopening windows update through services.msc- however this has not resolved the issue for me.
Under systems.msc it is listed as started, automatic (delayed)
The Background Intelligence Transfer service is the same. I have checked the profiles of both programs and there are no discrepancies.
I have used the microsoft fix it program. No effect
    Please help!

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver was THE fix for me as well.  I had spent many hours on this today trying to resolve the following errors:
Windows Update could not get updates because "the
service was not running" (even though Windows Update and the BITS services and others
    were in fact running).
Also Windows Defender Service could not start.  I opened the Windows Defender Control Panel applet, it told me it was stopped, I clicked on the Turn On button, while at the same time I monitored the services app (command prompt - services.msc).
I watched the status of Windows Defender service.  It kept changing from Stopped to Started just for a second or so, then the service would immediately stop again.  In Control Panel, Windows Defender finally timed out
with the same error listed by amerianz:  Error 0x8e5e0247: 0x8e5e0247
I tried many things from different search results for these 2 issues.  Among other things, after I disabled Antivirus, I stopped WUAUSERV and BITS, renamed Windows\SoftwareDistribution then restarted.  I tried a Windows Update
FixIt on the Microsoft FixIt center.  It said it found and fixed Windows Update issues, but no change.  I tried running SFC /SCANNOW from command prompt. The log said it found corrupted files but this made no difference.
Finally after installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, my PC immediately found new hardware and installed a driver.  Note: before installing this driver, all hardware listed in
Device Manager already had drivers installed.  I was then prompted to reboot.  After rebooting, Windows Update still had a red X and could
not check for updates.  So I opened the Windows Defender Control Panel applet, which showed that updates were available.  This meant of course that the Windows Defender service had started successfully.  I then clicked on the
Check for Updates button on Windows Defender, and after several seconds while Windows Defender was looking for updates, I noticed that the
Windows Update icon had appeared in the system tray and Windows was downloading new updates.  Both issues fixed.  Many thanks.

  • Windows Update Service Disabled - Error 80070422

    Hi,
On Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, when I go to Windows Update I see a "Check For Updates" button. When I click it I get an 80070422 error and "Try Again" button which does not work.
I have tried all that is explained in Help on this error, but it's still not working. Let me write in more detail: I opened "Administrative Tools", went to "Services", "Windows Update" service is disabled. I set the "Startup Type" to "Automatic", click on Apply and then I click the "Start" button to start the service. I get an error: 1058: "Windows could not start the Windows Update service on Local Computer", "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it".
I downloaded "WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and installed it, hoping that the problem will be fixed, but no luck.
I read somewhere on this forum that a user faced a similar problem and searched in "Windows\System32" for "wu*.*" files and changed the security settings for all of them to allow SYSTEM and Administrators full control and re-registered through "regsvr32" all of the .dll files, but, after doing all of these I still had no luck.
My Windows Update still displays the error 80070422 and when I try to start the Windows Update service I get the error that the service cannot be started and it always sets itself on "Disabled", no matter what I do.
Could someone please help me with this problem? I really don't know what else to do.

Seems this was the problem. Thanks again, mate, your post was a life saver.

  • Windows update - Not seeing all types of updates when checking

My problem is at one time, our 2008 R2 servers were all in a separate OU as all other machines and we had a GP for all of our Windows 7 machines to get updates from our WSUS.  Well, someone applied that policy to the whole domain which made the server
OU inherit the WSUS policy.  Before I was in the position to manage our servers, previous admins would disable the policy, perform a gpupdate /force on each server and then download and install updates.
I fixed this in group policy so that the servers can go out to the Windows update site and get updates but I am not sure they are getting everything they need.  For example, I have an Exchange 2010 server which needs some security patches based on a
scan with MBSA.  One id UR 8 for Exchange 2010 SP2 and one for  SP2 for MS Office 2010 filter pack.  They are both security which I would think should show up when checking for updates. I also have some servers that are missing SQL 2008 security
updates along with Visual C++ 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 security updates.  They aren't showing either.
Is there a way to check on each server where it is going to check for updates?  I have looked in some places in the registry but I can't find anything.  Below is a couple of screen shots to show what it looks like on the Exchange server.
    David Hood

Have you enabled "get extra updates from Microsoft" ? (this enables product other than Windows, to get updates)
If you are seeing updates for Windows, but not updates for Exchange nor SQL - then it's likely that those updates are not being published to WU/MU.
DUH!!!, I did a face palm when I saw that first line.  Didn't even cross my mind to look at the log.  I did find where it is going to the Microsoft site to search for updates.
Nevermind!!! Had a brain fart.  I just saw the link at the bottom of the Windows update page on the server where is says "Get updates for other Microsoft products.  Find out more".  I clicked the "Find our more" link and
it took me to the Microsoft site to install Microsoft update.  I did that, it ran another check, and BOOM, all my updates are there.  I spent a while on this issue this morning and couldn't find anything.  I feel a little stupid now, haha.
Thanks for the ultra fast responce though.  It helped me alot.

  • WIndows Update error 0x80070490

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my desktop and laptop.  Both the desktop and laptop are part of my home network.  I have the HP Officejet 4635e installed as part of the home network and I installed the HP software on both systems.  The printer is functioning properly.  I am able to print, scan and the HP 4635 passed the fax test.  However when I run Windows Update I keep getting the following error message:     There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search  the web or contact support for information, this may help:    • HP - Enterprise WSD Multi-Function Printer, Other hardware - Null Fax - HP Officejet 4630 series - Error 0x80070490 All other available updates install successfully.  This issue occurs when I run Windows Update on both the desktop and laptop.  Can you provide any help on how to fix this issue?

This a what is called a "ghost update."  I am getting same error when I run Update in Windows 10.  Unfortunately there no way in Windows 10 to hide an update like in previous versions.  So we just have to ignore these failed updates and continue on our merry way.  Ghost Updates occur via Microsoft when our software is up to date and they are not aware of it.  Maybe Microsoft will fix Windows 10 to hide updates later.

    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.

  • Windows 2003 R2 Gray Screen Hang on HP DL380 G5 when restarting or shutdown after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update

I’ve 4 identical HP DL 380 G5 Servers with Windows 2003 R2 Std.  The 4 machines have the same Windows driver version and motherboard BIOS version.  2 have no problem.  2 have problems after Nov/Dec 2011 Windows Update!
After running for a few days from power-up, the 2 problem servers will hang at gray screen during restart.  After clicking for restart,
    - The Event Log service will stop normally so there is no more error log can be seen!
    - The IP ping to the server can still work.  The mouse pointer in Windows can still be moved.
    - The Windows shutdown gray screen can be shown.
    - [Ctrl-Alt-Del] has stopped to function.
Then the system just freezes at that status.  I can only cold-boot the system!
After power-up again, I can do the Windows restart / shutdown normally!  But after a few day of running, the above symptom repeats!  The symptom happened since I installed the Windows Update in Dec 2011.  It didn’t happen before that!
Anyone can give a hint on how to diagnose it?

    Hi,
In order to troubleshoot the server hang issue, you can first preform a clean boot on the problematic system.
    Steps:
    ====================
     1. Click Start->Run…->type
    msconfig and press Enter
    2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services
and Disable All third party Services
    3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items
    4. Click OK and choose Restart
    5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs
If the server hang on issue still continues in clean boot mode, for the further troubleshooting, you may check in the Task Manager to see which process takes the memory resources.
Meanwhile, you can also use reliability and performance Monitor to track down what cause the performance issue.

  • Satellite L500 - System hanging on startup screen after Windows update

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help. My Satellite L500 is hanging on the blue startup screen after it restarted after a windows update, the mouse arrow is moving, and there seems to be some hard drive activity with some flickering in the system indicator lights. Other than that, nothing? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Denise

It was stuck on the Windows 7 welcome screen, all I had to do was hold the power button down for longer and restart it properly. I was just concerned as they always say not to turn the computer off during an update.
*All good now* thanks anyway :)

  • Outlook 2010 and 2013 hang on when starting up after recent Windows Updates (April 2014)

    Hello all,
I have roughly 140 or so installs of Outlook in my organization and I have been getting reports of Outlook hanging on startup.  It seems to be associated with a windows update but I don't know which one.  I have had success resolving the issue
by rolling back the recent updates (using system restore), but in this one case, there were 30 or so updates that were rolled back.  Unfortunately, I had move quick on that computer.  I had another computer yesterday with the same issue and have
a report of yet another today.  I need to figure this out before it becomes and epidemic!  Anyone else seeing this?  It does not appear to effect everyone.

    Hi,
If you are sure that recent Windows Updates caused this issue, We recommend you to remove the newly installed updates.
You don't have to roll back using system restore, just go to Control panel>Program and features>View installed updates and uninstall newly installed updates.
I currently haven't observed any user report the same issue. If this is confirmed by Microsoft that some recently released updates cause Outlook hangs problem, there will be a fixed version published later on; either a newer version or a new KB article.

  • 2012 R2 server hangs on reboot from Windows Updates

I have multiple Windows 2012 R2 servers which hang on restart after applying Wundows Updates. There are no enries in the logs to explain this.
The server console session shows only the 2012 windows icon; the server will not accept a Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and must be Reset, or powered off and powered on, at which point it goes into the configuring Windows screen.
Some servers are disconnected from the network, but not all (responds to ping, no alerts in SCOM 2012R2).

    Hi,
Before going further, can you elaborate with us which Windows updates you have installed? Besides, can we boot the servers into Safe Mode? If the servers can boot into Safe Mode, we can try to uninstall the updates to see
    if it helps.

  • Referred to start menu whe trying to access windows updates

When I try to access windows update from Firefox browser I am sent to start menu and windows update for windows 7. I am trying to avoid this for security sake. Windows is having the most problems and also google on security issues which is why I am using Firefox forinternet security. Not even the Norton my supposed security I am paying for can provide security for yahoo mail or windows. Yet I am forced to access under windows update. Am I secure if I leave the firefox browser up when I access windows update from my start menu? Or is there a way around this?

    Hi @khamm56 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Notebook and issues with screen flickering and freezing.  If the Notebook works in safe mode with no issues it is either driver or software related.
Can get to safe mode with command prompt?
F11 upon startup choose safe mode with Networking.
Then you can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. I recommend doing this for at least 2 weeks prior to this happening.
When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks.
