2012 R2 server hangs on reboot from Windows Updates

I have multiple Windows 2012 R2 servers which hang on restart after applying Wundows Updates. There are no enries in the logs to explain this.
The server console session shows only the 2012 windows icon; the server will not accept a Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and must be Reset, or powered off and powered on, at which point it goes into the configuring Windows screen.
Some servers are disconnected from the network, but not all (responds to ping, no alerts in SCOM 2012R2).

Hi,
Before going further, can you elaborate with us which Windows updates you have installed? Besides, can we boot the servers into Safe Mode? If the servers can boot into Safe Mode, we can try to uninstall the updates to see
if it helps.
Best regards,
Frank Shen

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows (again!)

This problem originally occurred about a year ago and no solution was found then but after a time, it simply went away. Well, now it's back: after a reboot into OS X (10.6.7) from Windows (7 Ultimate 64 Bit), my MacBook Pro refuses to sleep until rebooted a second time, after which it behaves correctly again. The Console log reports the following message: "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". I've disabled Growl and DropBox (possible suspects last time) to no effect, reset the SMC and PRAM, all the usual things. I've tried when connected to mains power or battery, on wired, wireless or no network at all and still the same problem. Sleep behaviour under Windows is correct. Hopefully the problem will eventually cure itself as it did last time but I would like to discover the reason and find out what this "remote login session" could possibly be. To reiterate, this ONLY occurs immediately after rebooting from Windows.

Tried repairing BootCamp in 7, no change, don't think there was anything wrong with it in the first place.
Here is a section of the log after reboot from BootCamp and it says "System Sleep prevented by active remote login session (600 second threshold)". This ONLY happens after a reboot from Bootcamp, after another reboot all goes back to normal. What could the "active remote login session" be?

  • Install optional driver updates from Windows Update for IdeaPad Yoga 13?

Windows Update on IdeaPad Yoga 13 - Windows 8.1 (64-bit) suggests two optional updates:
Conexant - Audio Device - Conexant SmartAudio HD
    10.01.2014
    Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
Intel Corporation Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 software update released in May, 2014
    04.06.2014
Should I install those updates or should I keep the original drivers?
The original drivers from Lenovo "Drivers and software" section (http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032590) seem to be older/outdated:
Conexant Audio Driver for 64-bit Windows
    8.65.3.53 10/22/2013
Integrated Graphics Driver for 64-bit Windows
    Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
    9.17.10.2843 10/23/2012
Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows
    10.18.10.3282 10/22/2013

Windows Update has now another update for "Intel Corporation Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1" and still no updates on the Lenovo site.
So I tried the the drivers from Windows Update and it seems that every thing is still working fine.

    Hello,
I have this issue regarding certificate chains while performing Outlook Anywhere connectivity test

Strange I have a feeling the exrca tool can't validate the godaddy class2 root authority due some older compability and wants to use the older original root authority valicert owned godaddy. Or when the exrca tool is validating the root CA it only has the
goaddy class2 root ca that was issued by valicert and not the standalone cert when doing the comparision. I sent the question to MS and will let you know when I hear back.
You can get rid of it
    https://certs.godaddy.com/anonymous/repository.seam
    Download the cert
    ◦gd_cross_intermediate.crt
Then import it into the trusted root cert authority on your CAS boxes. Then you need to delete the other godaddy class2 root authority. Make sure you see the one you imported both will be named goaddy class2 root authority but one will be issued by valicert.
Re-run the test and it will go away, I also saw the error with my domain as well using godaddy and got rid of it by using the new cert authority.

  • Downloading Service Pack 1 from Windows Update

I have a laptop I just restored Windows 7 Professional from a recovery disk and have run 1indows Update till there are no more updates to be applied.  However Service Pack 1 is unavailable to download.  I don't want to apply SP1 from a download
site but I will if that is the only way.  Is there a way to get SP1 from Windows Update or where is the best download location to get a convenient simple download of SP1?  Thanks.

    Hi Michael,
How did you get that SP1 update?
As Arnav provided, these address are all available.
In addition, please follow these steps to check if your computer have already installed SP1.
    1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type
Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
2.In the left pane, click View update history.

  • Windows Server 2012R2 - Cannot RDP, server hangs at logon from console after pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL

We have several machines that have exhibited this behavior so far. Once they get into this state, the only option is to reboot. They are HP ProLiant BL460c G7 blades.
    The behavior exhibited is:
You can no longer RDP to the machine.  It just eventually times out.
Console access via iLO shows what you'd expect, asking for CTRL+ALT+DEL, but when you press that, it just goes to the dark blue screen with "Windows Server 2012 R2" written at the bottom and doesn't go further.
There doesn't seem to be any unusual notes in the System Log that I can see.

I've also read the support article that you linked, but that seems to suggest that there is always a problem with RDP and in this case the server gets to a point where it is stuck and requires a reboot to clear.
    Hi Mitch,
For the above line of yours seems there is some misunderstanding, as nowhere in the link provided it suggest to restart\reboot the server. But instead need to check the certificate related scenario.
Can you ping the destination server when you can’t perform RDP?
Now for more troubleshooting you can choose performance monitor and can see what is effecting, for that you can go through beneath article.

  • Server 2012 (not R2) RODC fails to install Windows Updates

    Good morning all
Since around October, our 80-odd 2012 (non-R2) RODCs have been failing to install windows updates, rolling them back on reboot. Patches that don't require a reboot are fine. The short version is, please log a call with MS and reference this thread, if you're
having this issue as currently they're saying they won't fix this!!
Our product support group opened an official case and reported this with Microsoft and they've found the cause. PLEASE NOTE however, that this relates to RODC and ALL patches failing, not just 3000061 on non-RODC.
There was some chat relevant to this as originally it was thought KB3000061 was to blame, and a few other people had had the same issue there (see links at the bottom). I think however, that this issue now stands alone as any patch we try to install will
    fail.

    Cause:
The installer uses SAM API calls to manage the group. It always connects to the local SAM instance. The component also handles an uninstall task in the same function. On uninstall the group is being deleted.
So the SAM handle is requested with "Create Group" and "Delete" access.
The error happens because a RODC does not allow any changes and thus returns STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED.
More information about the prevent from accidental deletion feature please refer :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773347(v=WS.10).aspx
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739350(v=WS.10).aspx
    Recommendation:
This is a Bug in the RODC running on server 2012, However you may do an in place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 and then proceed with the installation of the patch.
The bad news is this is fixed in 2012 R2 with a hotfix - but it isn't fixed in 2012 and it won't be because.. they've only had one official report logged. And that was by us. So, if you want this fixed, you need to start logging this with MS now.
What I can say just now is that this isn't related to the registry fixes with WinEVT we've all been trying, it's NOT limited to 2008 that has been upgraded in place to 2012 (our product support group replicated it in the lab with a brand new 2012 promoted
to RODC) and it IS only happening with RODC. Possible fix might be to make your RODC RW for a bit and install your patches then.

The error indicates that IIS is returning a "404 not found" error back to the Windows Update Agent.  That might mean that you need to specify the correct port that WSUS is listening on, e.g.:
    WSUSServer=http://yourserver:8530

  • X Server and remote access from Windows

I am contemplating installing a MacMini Server running X Server but different people may need admin access, not all of them on Macs.
Is there a way where some of the server maintenance is done from a Windows machine using some sort of RDC program or is the only option to do the RDC from a Mac?

Out of the box OS X will provide access to nearly any VNC client. Many version exist for Windows. You just need to explicitly permit standard VNC access and provide a password. This can be done in System Preferences > Sharing > Remote Management > Computer Settings.
In that dialog, check "VNC viewers may control screen with password" and set a password. In leopard the text box had a character limit. I have not tested in Snow yet. If you run into a problem, you can use the kickstart command line tool as it appears to have no character limit.
Oh, one other tip. Many Window's VNC clients will fail to establish a connection. This is because the screen depth is set to low. Make sure you set the number of colors on the VNC client to the highest it will go.
    Hope this helps

  • Non-system disk Error when rebooting from Windows Disk

    Hello,
I'm trying to run Windows 7 Pro on a partition on my Macbook pro retina display. I have reached the step where through bootcamp you reboot from the wondows disk. I have the windows disk in an external optical drive and have tried both 32 and 64 bit installation disks and still getting the same error"
    "Non-system disk
    Press and key to reboot"
When I hit any key nothing happends, have to turn off computer by holding power button.
I have also tried turning the computer on and holding cammad R, and selecting the boot disk manually, same error occurs.
    Any suggestions?

Reboot your Mac while holding down the Alt/Option-key until the Boot Selection screen comes up.
    Choose to boot into oSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences then Startup Volume and reset OSX to be the default.
Btw.: there are no OSX Lion discs unless you made one yourself.

  • Black screen on reboot from windows to mac?

    Hello,
A black screen is stalking me... I'd be much obliged if anyone can help.
    The problem:
I have Windows 7 installed with Bootcamp. Every time I shut down / restart from  Windows  to get to the Mac side, the chime rings, but the screen stays black. I can tell the Mac is running though, because of the sound I hear when I press the volume up/down keys on the keyboard. Then, at some point (5 - 30 - 60 mins later) the computer decides out of nowhere it's time to unveil the desktop... This never happens when I reboot from the Mac side (unless I force shutdown while the black screen is still there).
Things I tried that didn't work:
    - Command-Option-P-R to reset NVRAM (worked once but didn't fix it, and now when I try the screen stays black)
    - Resetting SMC
    - Apple Diagnostics came back with no issues found (when I restarted after the diagnostics, I got hit with the black screen again...)
    - Erasing the Windows partition and reinstalling it.
    Things I should probably mention:
The mac is a late 2013 iMac, Intel Core i5 with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M, running OSX 10.9.1
I apologize if this has an obvious solution I somehow missed, or if it was answered in another post.
    Thanks for your time.

One way is to wipe the iPod clean and use it as a hard drive to carry the files over to the new comptuer. You must format the iPod in what's called Fat32, the older formatting for DOS. If you do this on a Mac, you use the Disk Utility to Erase the disk, and you choose MS-DOS for the format.
Then you plug in the iPod to the Mac, drag the iTunes Music folder to the iPod disk. Then you plug it into the Windows machine and drag the files to your iTunes folder there. See some instructions here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173
On the other hand, you might try using a 3rd party program that takes songs off the iPod. But Windows doesn't read the Mac files, I bet they won't help you move the music cross-platform.
    Hope this helps...

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep in OS X after reboot from Windows

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit running on a BootCamp partition on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3. When I first installed 7 last year, I initially had a strange problem in that the Mac wouldn't sleep (default settings) when rebooted back into OS X from BootCamp. If I did another restart in OS X, everything returned to normal. I never found a solution to the problem but after a while it went away and things worked properly. Now, after several months and for no good reason I can think of, the problem has returned. Everything works correctly in both OSs except for this. Any help would be appreciated.

Tried repairing BootCamp in 7, no change, don't think there was anything wrong with it in the first place.

  • ProBook 4520s hangs during upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 due to Ralink RT3090 driver

While upgrading my ProBook 4520s from Windows 7 pro 64 to Windows 10 pro 64 the laptop froze. It appears that it was caused by the Ralink RT3090 wifi chip driver that comes with Windows 10. I have replaced it with another driver and the upgrade worked fine. The procedure I followed was as follows: - Disable the wifi/bluetooth combo in the BIOS settings. - Goto control panel - Windows upgrade and start the listed Windows 10 upgrade- After Windows 10 has been installed, download the Ralink RT3090 driver from: http://mediatek.com/en/downloads1/downloads/pcimpcicbrt2860rt2760rt2890/ fill in a name, email address and the captcha to start the download of the driver package. Note that Mediatek bought Ralink a few years ago so this site is from the manufacturer or the Ralink RT3090 wifi chip used in the laptop. - Unpack the driver package in a folder.- Select Windows key + R, enter msconfig and run it- Select to start Windows 10 in safe mode after the next boot - Select to reboot the PC- When the PC restarts but before Windows 10 starts up, enter the BIOS settings by pressing escape- Enable the wifi/bluetooth combo in the BIOS settings- Save the BIOS settings and exit- Windows will start in safe mode- Install the new driver by running setup.exe in the folder where the driver package was unpacked- Select Windows key + R and enter msconfig and configure to start Windows normally after the next boot- Reboot It appears that the ProBook 4520s can also come with other wifi chips than the Ralink 3090, so this fix might not be suitable for all versions of the ProBook 4520s.

    Thanks for the advice!

After reboot and installing windows updates etc. FF crashes all the sudden. No idea why. I have deleted all profiles completely, unintsalled ran ccleaner and reinstalled. nothing. Any ideas? I don't think windows updates effect FF. FF will not even open in safe mode and rests d not do anything all I can do is restart and close.
Thanks I appreciate anybody who can help. I have current anti malware and my pc is clean. Windows 7 64 bit. I use Webroot and that is temporarily disabled as I try to solve this.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
[[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
[[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

On my end user computers Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Updates > Specify intranet Microsoft update service location
Does it specify your Primary Site server? YES
Endpoint Protection leverages the software update component of ConfigMgr for delivery of definitions. This local Windows Updates policy was created when you configured this component.
    1. How do I disable this local Windows Updates policy in SCCM ?  Thanks

The client will set these local policy settings if your Client Settings are set to manage software updates and you don't have a group policy in place.
If you do NOT want ConfigMgr to control updates, then you can go to Client Settings > Software Updates and change "Enable software updates on clients" to No.
