Windows 8 installation failure

Question

i'm trying to create a windows partition on my macbook air using bootcamp. the bootcamp assistant made it through the process of creating a usb install disk on a usb drive from a new downloaded windows8 iso, i selected the partition size where you (slide the divider) and after reboot the process stopped/failed. a bootcamp partition does not show up on the disk utility, the new partition is just missing and it just shows one drive that's now smaller (minus the size of the new slider partition i tried to create).
if i reboot now and hold the option key i see a windows and an efi drive i can boot from in addition to the mac drive. if i boot from the mac side all seems to be fine. in either of the other cases i can select the drive and try to install windows from my usb stick. i get as far as inputting my product key and then when it asks me where i want to install it there is no bootcamp partition there, just an EFI partition and everything else. i then just have to back out and reboot on the mac side. i don't know what to try next. I'm not even sure how to get back to where i started and remove the new partition? please help.
