Windows PC User Making The Big Switch To Mac OS X & MacBook 2.0GHz

I'm from the Philippines. I've been a Windows PC user for around 10 years. I figured it's time to replace my old Pentium III 500MHz/Win98SE with a newer system to keep up with highter system requirements set forth by newer applications.
The features I looked for include portability, performance, connectivity (built-in WiFi & Bluetooth) and value (not too expensive). I'm initially leaning towards getting another Windows XP-based platform because Windows-based apps are readily available here and getting tech support for the Mac would be a little prob. Also, I just can't afford to leave behind some applications that are somehoew inexistent in the Mac world, but the mere thought that the PC world would soon be shifting to Vista kinda turned me off. Nobody wants to buy a new notebook that would suddenly become obsolete in just a few months or so.
However, everything changed when online research led me to Apple's homepage (www.apple.com), where I discovered Mac's latest wonder: the Macbook. I heared about the Mac OS X's reputation for stability and performance. They say Macs are less prone to worms & viruses too since most of these things were designed specificically to infect Windows-based platforms. Looks like this is it for me. I'll be getting a MacBook 2.0GHz soon.
I must admit that what primarily attracted me to the Intel-powered Macbook is the fact that it could now run two operating systems thru "Boot Camp" or Parallels For Mac. Two applications that would give me the capability to run Mac OS X and Windows XP on a single platform. It's like having the best of both worlds.
For me, this is really great news but I still have questions though. The Macbook is a new release, so I'm still iffy about purchasing it as new technology is notorious for having many annoying quirks and kinks that need to be smoothed out.
My question is... What are the PROS and CONS of using BootCamp and Parallels respectively? Is Parallels better than the other? Which one would you recommend? Should I decide to install both, will there be any hitches?
I won't be upgrading for the next 5 years or so. The notebook will likely see some heavy use for Medical Transcription work and maybe occasional gaming (mostly flight sims). This would be my first Mac purchase so I better do it right the first time. So if you have any comments, feedbacks, suggestions... kindly post it here.
I'll be making the big switch soon.
Rich

I'm running Parallels on an iMac 2.0 GHz, and I absolutely love it! I expected all sorts of glitches and found virtually none. The only drawback I know if is that it treats your USB 2.0 ports like USB 1.1. Otherwise, my Windows XP virtual machine inside of Parallels doesn't seem to know it's not on a PC; it runs smoothly and much faster than on my previous 1.5GHz PC with 1.0 GB RAM. I've loaded Quicken for Windows, MS Office, Norton Anti-Virus, Adobe Acrobat, and several other Windows Apps with no troubles at all. I'm telling you, this software (Parallels) is amazing. I feel like I literally have two computers now.
I would recommend that you have 2.0 GB of RAM, because while you're running Parallels, you have 2 OS's operating at the same time. But the ability to switch back and forth between the two OS's, share files, cut and paste - well, it's simply awesome, and well worth any extra cost.

  • I'm making the big switch from PC today!

I am going to purchase a Macbook today! The Black configuration. I've always been a PC user and hated it for the most part but I'm also a gamer and that has alwasys been the only thing that put me off Macs since they don't put out as much juice as PC's can hardware wise (mostly video cards). I recently purchased a PS3 so now I have nothing to stop me from buying a brand new Macbook! And I also happen to have a $3600 Dell XPS M1710 laptop for my PC gaming needs, but it's far too big (17") and heavy to lug around.
But I have some concerns. Do any of you know when the next line of Macbooks will be released? Because I don't want to buy a Macbook, only to see it be replaced by a new generation and then regret not getting that. Anyone know when the next line might appear?
Also how do you guys like your Macbooks? Good? Quiet? Reliable? Thx!

No one can accurately predict when Apple will release new hardware. Any timetables that anyone gives you here are simply guesses.
That being said, here's my gut feeling: We won't see new Macbooks until the late summer or mid-fall. They were just updated three weeks ago and they're now on the Intel Penryn processors. Intel is releasing a brand new platform called Montevina this June. I believe Apple will update their MacBook Pros to use this new platform at WWDC '08, which is in late June. The new MBPs will probably ship in July. The MacBooks usually get updated a few months after the MBPs. (In 2007, the Santa Rosa platform was released in May, Apple came out with Santa Rosa MBPs in June, and the MacBooks went to Santa Rosa in November.) The bottom line is this: It's a good time to buy a MacBook.
The MacBooks are good machines. They are very quiet and reliable. Take good care of yours, make sure you shut the lid GENTLY and never carry the laptop in a backpack where textbooks or other weight presses the screen into the body. This can cause the edges of the plastic next to the trackpad to crack.
Enjoy your Macintosh! Welcome to the light!

  • Making the Big "Switch"

I recently ordered an iMac 17-inch Core 2 Duo. I have had a Mac Mini G4 for a while now, but I always synched my iPod with my PC. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on getting my entire iTunes library OR iPod contents (since they have all the same exact stuff) to my new Mac. I have figured a few ways to do it, but they all require a lot of time and frustration. If anyone knows any ways to do this, please post.

Apple doesn't support the transferring of music from your iPod to your iTunes. Only iTunes to iPod. So to do this you will need to download a third party program that will help copy your music from your iPod back to your computer, or there are a couple manual methods you can check out.
    THIRD PARTY PROGRAMS

How to get songs off of your Windows iPod - cnet

With that said, to me personally all the manual methods seem like a huge headache. I had a windows formatted ipod, and used Senuti to switch over to my macbook. Downloaded it from the site, the instructions are step by step and easy, it took all the music off my ipod and into senuti, from there i could import it into my mac library. It was easy, took about an hour, i have 1000+ songs. so depending on how much you have the time would vary. Worked great for me, hope you find something that works for you as well, Good Luck

  • Why are your Data Plans SO SCREWED UP? You are Unfairly making the average data user Subsidize the Big Data Users. This kind of thing is why I left AT

Why are your Data Plans SO SCREWED UP? You are Unfairly making the average data user Subsidize the Big Data Users. This kind of thing is why I left AT&T and came to Verizon a Decade ago. Their plans sound better now, maybe I should go back.

I currently have 5 phones/lines. 2 Droid MAXX phones, a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone and 2 basic phones (4+ year old Motorola & Samsung). The cost for each line rose considerably and usage fees more than doubled on the 2 basic phones when I upgraded the 3 smartphones at the beginning of this year and Had to Convert from my old Unlimited Family Plan to the Newer Share Everything Plan. My Data Usage varies a lot due to occasional travel which I have little control over. At least you recently began including a $10 deduction on each of the 2 older phones (which I have not updated in order to save money though they need updating). My Sweet Spot on Data would be around 6GB Monthly Data. But that level is not offered. Only 2, 3, 4, 10, or 15 GB plans are offered.
    Verizon's Data Plans Offered Are:  2GB-$50/MO = $25/GB  *   3GB-$60/MO = $20/GB   *   4GB-$70/MO = $17.50/GB   *  10GB-$80/MO = $8/GB   *  15GB-$100/MO =  $6.66/GB   *   And Overages are Charged at $15 per 1k-1GB.
Offers JUMP From 4GB TO 10GB (There's a 6GB GAP/JUMP - ***) - Why is there NO 6 or 8 GB offering?  Because Verizon is Overcharging the Lower Data Users!  Seems like All of the Other Cellular companies are Offering Better Deals.
If you can offer something better please let me know, otherwise I may have to consider going back to AT&T or moving to one of the other cellular companies.

  • Saving to SharePoint works only half the time for Windows 7 Users--all the time for Windows XP users

We have a SharePoint 2010 Environment with hardware load balancing, 2 WFEs, 2 Apps Servers and 1 SQL Server. This was built in October 2013. Office Integration and Saving back to SharePoint works all of the time for users on XP. It works sporadically for
users on Windows 7. When Windows 7 users do the following:
Opening an Office Document from computer and saving it to SharePoint
Within a Document Library, using Save As from an opened document
When selecting in a Document Library from the Document Tab> “New” and then the desired content type
Send> Save to SharePoint from within Office Document
They may either be brought to the SharePoint library (correct) or to My Documents (incorrect).
In the case of number 1 (Opening an Office Document from computer and saving it to SharePoint)--using Save and Send will sometimes open the SharePoint library and sometimes open My Documents.
    Our URL is https://CompanyName.domainname.com/Sites/SiteCollectionName
The intermediary "Sites" is actually a blank path.
When My Documents is opened I've noted with Fiddler (a web debugger) that we get a 404 on sites:
    Could this be the issue?

    Some things to double check:
Ensure that you have sticky sessions enabled on your load balancer
Check that your WebDav calls are making it to the server
Ensure that you have a root site collection in all your web apps
Just out of curiosity, what is the http request look like for the 404 error?

  • The App Switcher of Mac OS X Lion doesn't display properly after waking up from sleep

    Hey guys,
    I have a MacBook Pro15 inch Core2Duo 2.66GHz running Mac OS X 10.7.2.
When my Mac woke up from sleep, sometime the Application Switcher doesn't show the iconc properly like this.
Other time, it shows the dark icon.
The color profile setting seems to be messed up. But it only affects certain apps.
Some of my affected apps are
    Application Switcher
    like attached image
    Icons got darker
    TweetDeckThe app becomes darker overall
Gaicho Software's XRGThe supposed-to-be orange indicater became red
Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks in advanced!

Yes, change your display / colour profile to a different (or the default) profile. Has worked for myself, and many others on other forums.
    Hope that helps...

  • Making the right icon for Mac OS X application...

I have a few questions about making the right icon and whether the icon is perfect for OS X. For starters, what should I consider making. I know that's beating around the bush, but what make's a Mac OS icon good? Another would be, what would the sizes be. I know how to use "Icon composer", but my icons always seem very small in the dock compared to others.

I think in 20 years I've only been able to make one halfway decent icon.
I think the problem is that it's actually art... it takes an artist like Susan Kare to make truly magnificent icons. And there's something to be said for simplicity, or at least economy of pixels.

  • Switching from Mac Mini to Macbook Air

Hello, this is my first post in this forum and I hope that I chose the right category.
Right now I'm running a Mac Mini 2011 Base model, that is the one with an 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and I have also upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.
I know want to take a step further into the Mac laptops and I have my eye on the Macbook Air but I have some questions.
The work I do is mostly writing code and light photo editing with Photoshop, no heavy photo editing or video rendering. I want to know which Macbook Air I should pick to get about the same performance as the 2011 Mac Mini that I'm running right now because I'm very happy with my Mac Mini.
    Here are some questions:
    1. How do the processors stand up to the Mac Mini? The latest Macbook Air of course runs the new Haswell processors but I'm uncertain if I should pick the upgraded i7 processor that's available. The Macbook Air has a lower clock frequency than the Mac Mini and I was wondering if the Macbook Air can stack up.
    2. Should I get the 11 inch or the 13 inch screen? I will be doing most of my work hooked up to an external monitor but sometimes I feel the need to sit down at an more comfortable place. Is there anyone who has any experience with web design/coding on an Macbook Air monitor?
I'm already planning on getting the 8GB of RAM upgrade and probably the 256GB SSD too.
I'm very thankful for any answer whatsoever!
    Sincerely,
    Fabian Lindfors

Mac Mini is great isnt it? Got a couple of them and typing on one now.
My new base model 2013 macbook Air I5 with 8gig of ram
vs. what im currently using now,... this Mac Mini QUAD CORE with 16 gig of ram.
Honestly on simplex Photoshop editing I notice NO difference between my quad core 16gig RAM Mac Mini and my Macbook Air 13" I5.
Ive had both 11" and 13" macbook Air, I really wouldn't go back to the 11".
Also the battery life in the 13" is a lot more than the 11".  Much larger Lithium Polymer battery packs on the 13"
Yes, get the 8gig of ram regardless
Here is an excellent video comparison between the 11” I5 vs. I7 2013 Macbook Air.

  • The Big Switch!

Switching over to leopard today, bit nervous to be honest. Just Thinking about my 1000's of bookmarks. Anyway simple way of saving these? Cheers.

    Hi-
    Use Migration Assistant.
That is, you will need to maintain a current system on an internal, or external firewire, drive, that the Migration Assistant can pull the info from.
So, if you plan on installing Leopard over your current system, you'll be out of luck, unless you use the "Upgrade" install path, which isn't really recommended.

  • How to go about making the big leap from Photoshop 7.0 (pre-CS version) to CS4 or CS5?

I had bought an iMac way back in 2002 and had pre-installed Photoshop 7.0 on the machine.  At the time, I wasn't much into photography, but am becoming now.  I'm not a pro mind you ... I just like to retouch holiday and family pictures, as well as the local occasional exhibits or events as a hobby.
I'm working fine with version 7.0, but feel that I'm lacking a lot of advantages which are currently present on CS4 & 5, let alone 3, 2, and 1 already.  So, I'm now exploring the move to CS5 or 4 but am lacking knowledge on how best to do this.  Besides, I've learned that there is now Basic & Elements versions too.  I'm all so confused.  Can anyone please guide me on the right move?

First of all, Photoshop 7.x is out of the upgrade loop altogether, so you'll be paying full price for whatever you buy.  Incidentally, make sure you have applied the 7.0.1 update.  Nobody should be running 7.0 at all.
Secondly, you need to specify on what machine you'll be running the new version.
Then tell us whether you shoot RAW images or JPEGs, which in my judgment defines whether you absolutely need CS5.
It may also be that Photoshop Elements may be enough for your needs (note that there is a dedicated Photoshop Elements forum, Elements is not Photoshop).  More info is needed from you.

I am unable to consistently see the comments on some shared PDFs. Occasionally I can, but the vast most of the time, the PDFs show up with zero comments. Mac users and other Win7 users are able to view all the comments on the same shared PDF.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat, deleting preferences, disabling the firewall, and attempted connecting from various wifi hotspots, but I still can't see the comments.
    What else can I try?

    Hi Amy ,
Please kill the process (Adobe Collab Sync.exe) from the task manager and then try to open the file and check for comments to see if the comments are visible.

I have recently purchased Photoshop Elements - but accidentally chose the PC version rather than Mac (I had changed to Mac the week before).  I spent over 3 hours using the online support to get the activation code changed from a PC to a Mac version but the conversation kept disconnecting, meaning that I had to go over everything 3 times.  I just want to speak to someone!!!! Can anyone guide me on how I can rectify this?
