Windows Shared Printer - Problem adding: Error 256

Getting error 256 (username and password) when trying to add a windows printer connected to the LAN which is shared.
Any clues to the proper method of doing this?
Beavis2084

Unfortunately, I think several things can cause that
error. Please try the Advanced Windows Printer via
Samba technique:
In Printer Setup, click Add, then hold the option key
and click More Printers, select Advanced from the
bottom of the first menu, select Windows printer via
Samba. Enter the URI like this:
smb://usernameonPC:password@[IP address of
PC]/printersharename
I have tried your suggestion but no success. To be clear, I used my Windows XP login name for "usernameonPC" and my server name for "IP address of PC" and my printer pool name for "printersharename". Was this right?
I read elsewhere that I should turn on "Sharing" functions on my PC, which I tried. I also read that I need to make sure I have a "network account" which I tried. Nothing is working. Pretty frustrated now. Thanks for your help. Is there anything else I should be trying?

  • Accessing Windows shared printer, no GIMP driver for Canon iP3000. Options?

I checked a few pages worth of threads but couldn't find a solution to my problem.
Finally accessing my Windows shared printer. I have a Canon iP3000 and it doesn't print when I use the generic driver. I tried selecting the GIMP "Canon BJC 3000" driver but the prints end up shrunken to about a quarter of the paper size (8.5"x11"), my paper was set up and configured correctly. Any options for correcting this?
I had planned on connecting the printer to my MacBook Pro but all the support I could find was for sharing from Windows, so if anyone knows a good resource for such a setup, that'd help too.

There are new versions of Gimp-Print, now called Gutenprint, coming out on a regular basis. Check if the latest has your model:

I was doing everything that Article: HT3049 was saying but i still couldn't print with my windows shared printer from my mac , finally I found out another way, so for those of you who that having problem you can do the steps below:
    On the Windows 7 PC
    1. Go to Control Panel
    2. Select "Programs and Features" panel
    3. Click "Turn Windows Features on or off"
    4. Click on the "LPD Print Service". Under "Print and Document Services"
    5. Ensure printer(s) are shared
    On the Mac
    1. Open "System Preferences" - "Print & Fax"
    2. Click "+" to add a printer
    3. Right hand button tool bar to customize and add "Advanced" button
    4. Select "Advanced"
    5. In the "Type:" field select "LPD/LPR Host or Printer"
    6. In the "URL:" field enter lpd://IPserver/PrinterShareName; (e.g., lpd://192.168.1.102/samsung)
Using lpd://ServeName/PrinterShareName does not work, the IP address must replace ServerName
The IP address is the address of your PC, the one assigned by your router
    7. Click the "Add" button
    enjoy!:)

I had to download the driver for my printer. Depending on the printer you will have to go to that site. In the search engine type 'mac os driver (model printer). I have a dell wireless. After that I went to printers/faxes and hit the + sign and my dell printer was there to add. Hope this helps a bit. I actually just did it today.

  • How to print on Windows Shared Printer

As I search in Google I found that there are many question about hot to print on windows shared printers. This is the way....
Before you add your windows shared printers in you Mac, sometimes you can not find your printer driver. The only way is directly connect your windows shared printers to you Mac, and connect your Mac to internet. After that your mac will automatically download printer driver. Now you have to add windows shared printers to your mac (this is part is easy..I'm not going to explain this...), and after you select the right driver you still can NOT print to windows shared printers ? You already have user & password for PC that connected to the windows shared printers...but nothing happened in your printer...
    Soooo.....
All you have to do is :
    1. Go to system pref on mac
    2. Click on sharing - thick on "file sharing"
    3. Go to "option" and then thick on "share files & folders using AFP" & thick on "share files & folders using SMB (windows)"
    4. Dont forget to thick on you account name below...
    5. You're good to go...
    6. Please note that you have to know the PC Windows user & password that connected to the shared printer.

    Hello Greg & Hello PAHU...
Yesterday everything is fine for printing to windows shared printer. But after I update my XP, problems came up again....
And thanks to your link Greg, you are absolutly right about the driver...the problem is the driver...
And your link is solving  my problem (until know....) and you are right too PAHU, without thicking File Sharing feature in my Mac, I still can printing with windows shared printer...
And with this reply I admitted that my information above maybe wrong, and the real solver to my problem is to install gutten-print driver :http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

  • Printing to a windows shared printer (Epson  Photo 1400) on a AD Network

Looking for help with printing to a windows shared printer but I believe I need instructions for a domain rather than a workgroups??? • Printing to a Windows Shared Printer in Windows Domain Stopped Working

If anybody can shed some light on the problem below I would be highly appreciative. I have tried every suggestion I've found on ways to fix this problem, including postings found on this forum, without success.
I use able to Print to a Shared HP Laser Jet printer one a Windows 2003 Server machine, which is part of a Windows 2003 Domain. It has been working faultlessly until about a 2 weeks ago. I have had a number of errors including unable to Connect but the Error I get constantly now is:
+Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...ERROR: Connection failed with error NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY"+
I have reset the password of the windows user that originally made the connection when the computer was set up and this password had special characters. After reading various posts I have tried:
    1. Reseting that users password without special characters, deleting the printer and adding it back in using the same user and the new password. The same user can map and connect to windows Shared Directories on the same Server and open and edit files
    2. I have reset the Keychain to make sure it was using the new password. Again deleted and re-added the printer.
    3. Created a new user both on the domain and one the print server deleted and re-added the printer using each user while also reseting the key chain
    4. Tried the Advance option on the Printer Setup Utility using the following SMB URL format,
smb://user:pass@Domain/Machine/Printer where, the domain is called "home", the machine name is "Devserver01" and the printer share name is "HPLaser" resulting in a smb URL of smb://shanep:xxxxx@Home/Devserver01/hplaser.
    None of the above work!
So as a new MAC user I have absolutely no other ideas of where to look for additional information on what is happening i.e. where do you look for log files that may contain additional detail.
Can anybody assist on suggesting any other things to look for or check?
    Thanks
    Shane

    Hi Greg,
Thanks of the tips. I have just managed to get it working and I didn't use the LPD method but tried a few different smb URI's.
    Here's what I found worked.
    1. I created a standard user account on the Windows 2003 server on which the printer is connected and shared, i.e. a non Domain user name that is local to the server only and not the domain
    2. I then used this user name and password, along with the IP address of the server in the URL i.e.
    smb://user:password@IPofserver/hplaser.
    3. Printed a test page successfully
I then tried variations of a theme using username and passwords on the domain, changing the @workgroup/server/printer with no success.
I could however replace the IP address with simply the @Server/Printer combinations using he local user name and password successfully.
I also installed apple and Unix printing and file services so whether this made the difference I'm not sure.
Interestingly I tried to add the mac to the LDAP/Active Directory and couldn't successfully bind to the directory. Not that I'm an AD expert, but I have configured a few Java applications to use LDAP/AD authentications and groups of late so this problem is a little unusual, but that aside, thanks for the pointers, Printing problem solved. now to solve the AD one

  • Printing to a Windows shared printer, keep getting "Hold for Authentication" when I'm on the Windows shared network and can browse the computers.

I have had two MacBook Pros now, and this has been an issue in Mountain Lion and Mavericks. I've got a shared printer on the local Windows network (it's a USB printer shared via the network and the computer), and the other Windows computers in the house can print to it no problem. The Mac sees it no problem, yet whenever I try to print to it, I just get "Hold for Authentication."
Like I said, persists over Mountain Lion and Mavericks. No other computer in the house has any issues printing to it. I've installed the drivers for the printer as well (Brother HL-2240).
I've tried to follow the instructions here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23268762#23268762 but the printer isn't listed in Keychain Access.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Well, that isn't too useful. Try this instead: Adding a printer shared by a Windows computer via SMB/CIFS.

    Hi Kmanxx,
The update failure might be caused by a variety of reasons such as connection issues, incomplete Components and firewall. For troubleshooting, specific error code of the failure update will be helpful.
You also could find installation failure events and error code in log files, such as WindowsUpdate.log (C:\Windows\ WindowsUpdate.log) and CBS.log(C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log). Here you first want to search for “error” in your logs. This will search for
Error entries. Focus on the day the installation attempt occurred. Refer to your time line of update log, find what error happened. Of course you could post your log content and we’d like to give it a look.
How to collect the specific error code of failure update:
We can do this by viewing your update history.
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), and tap or click Settings.
    2. Tap or click Change PC settings, and then Update and recovery.
    3. Tap or click View your update history.
    View failed update error code.

  • Windows Shared Printer works on two of three Macs

I have a Windows Home Premium PC with an HP C5280 shared.
I have a MacBook Pro, a iMac purchased within the last year, both running SN and an older iMac 1.25 G4 running Leopard.
I'm trying to get the IMac 1.25 G4 to use the shared printer but I have not been successful.
My first question is - Do I have to install the HP C5280 software on the iMac. I don't recall if I had to do this on the other machines (getting old and memory is questionable these days!!)
FYI - I have followed the instructions found to "manually install" and have tried other ways, but still no success.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Regards, - JP

I neglected to supply the error message.
"There is a problem communicating with the printer. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the computer. Delete or stop the job and try again."
All of these conditions I have checked.
Also, when I select the Printer from the Print & Fax displayand then click on the "Utility" icon, I receive an error for a Lexmark printer. Never had one connected to this machine. Is this expected?

  • Windows 8 printing problem with 2575 printer

My Photosmart 2575 printer worked ok with windows XP on my old Dell computer. On my new Lenovo Windows 8 computer using the usb printer connector there is a problem.
When I try to print a word document it prints the first 6 to 8 lines of the document and then displays "printing"  and hangs, so I have to cancel the print. When I re-try the printing, it again prints 8 or so lines of the documentand, ejects the paper and says "out of paper". When I reload the paper it prints the document successfully.

    @dave_sk, Welcome to the forums!
I read about the troubles you are now having when trying to print from your Photosmart 2575 to your Windows 8 system. I sure hope I can help you through this obstacle and have you printing again!
I would first like to mention the error message you see when trying to print. Here is the troubleshooting guide to work through the "Out of Paper" error, please try all the steps:

Hopefully you can print without the error message however, if you see it again, run the Print and Scan Doctor. This diagnostic tool will check for any conflicts that could be causing the issue. The tool will show you a report at the end. If there was a problem that the tool could not fix, you will notice it in the results.
Please write back with the outcome and also the results from running the PSDr.

  • Can't see windows shared printer

    Hi,
Just joined a small company that is all windows based. So if I want to keep using my Mac, I need to resolve a couple important issues. One of them is printing to the office printers. The office is set up to use a PC running windows 2000 connected to the printers in question. The printers are all shared by this PC and everyone accesses them through.
The problem I am having is that when I go through the printer utility and select more printers, I can find and connect to the designated PC for printing. However, after connecting to it, there are no printers visible to select for setting up.
The printers that are highest on my list are an HP1300 and HP5000. I believe the HP1300 is connected via USB.
I saw the post mentioning potential problems with the drivers and to get hpijs.
But is that the reason I can't even see the shared printers?

    drmoque wrote:
...But is that the reason I can't even see the shared printers?
No. While you will need the hpijs, Foomatic RIP and Ghostscript software to print to the USB shared printer, they are not needed to see the shared printer.
When you opened (double-clicked) the Windows 2000 print server, were you prompted to authenticate? If you didn't authenticate, then this could explain why the shared printers are not being displayed, as you are probably connecting as a guest and this account has no access to the printers. You will need to ask for an account to use, or have one created for you so that you can see the printers.
The other thing you may need to check is if the 2000 PC is part of a domain rather than a workgroup. If it is a domain, then the account name that you use to authenticate to it has to include the domain name, such as domain\accountname.

Rather than use SMB to connect from Lion to the Windows XP printer share, a better method is to enable Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP and then use LPD on the Mac to print via the Windows share.
To install Print Services for UNIX on Windows XP:
Log on to the Windows server with an administrative-level account.
Start the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
    Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
Click Other Network File and Print Services, and then click Details.
Click to select the Print Services for UNIX check box, and then click OK.
Follow the instructions on the screen to finish the installation
If you haven't done so already, share the printer on Windows XP and make the name one word - no spaces or special characters
With the print services enabled you can then create the printer queue on Lion.
Open Print & Scan and click + to add a printer
Select the IP icon and set the protocol to Line Printer Daemon - LPD
For the Address, enter the IP address of the Windows XP computer
For the Queue name, enter the share name set for the printer in Windows XP
Name and Location are free text so you can set this to something meaningful
For the Print Using menu, select the supporting printer driver. Note that like connections via SMB, the vendors driver for Lion in some cases cannot be used and an alternate like those offered by the Gutenprint suite must be used.
Click the OK button to complete the queue creation.
Now you are ready to test the new print queue.

  • Windows 7 Printing Problem

I have a very peculiar printing problem using Acrobat 9.5.2.  The pages always prints like this:
    <http://www.mytechnet.talktalk.net/Out-of-the-loop.pdf>
When I print the same page in Bullzip (a free pdf creator) it prints/creates the correct English file that can be read in Reader.
I am using Windows 7 Professional with 8 Gb ram and 2 TB Disk Drive (1.8 TB free).  Is my installation corrupted or is there a simple fix for it.
    Thanks.

This is a classic error when the fonts used in the document and your systems fonts aren't compatible or aren't the same.  What you could do is to NOT TO RELY on systems fonts as defaults and everything should work normally.  To do this try this:
    1) Go to Start/Windows Orb
    2) Click on Devices and Printers
    3) Right-click on Adobe PDF
    4) Click on Printing Preferences
    5) Uncheck "Rely on systems fonts only; Do not use document fonts"
    6) Click OK
You are now done and your documents should look normal on the screen.
See this picture (Click on it to magnify it if necessary):
    Good luck.

has also provided a solution to the printing difficulties encountered under Leopard, especially to shared printers connected to another machine (Windows) on a network.
Here is his advice/step by step - worked for me, finally!
    +"Hey guys,+
+I have the solution for you.+
+Prerequisites: 1. your windows PC with the printer on it needs to have an admin account on it with a single word no spaces. (preferred unix) 2. your printer sharename is a single word (ie. Canon iP4300 should be just ip4300).+
    +Now follow the below steps:+
+1. Open your system preferences > Open Print & Fax+
    +2. Click + to add a printer.+
+3. Right-click on the Toolbar at the top and select "Customise Toolbar..."+
+4. Drag the "Advanced" icon to the toolbar & select "Done"+
    +5. Click the "Advanced" icon+
+6. Select "Windows" from the "Type:" drop down menu+
+7. In the "URL:" textbox type the location of your windows printer in the format below (use the format depending on whether your Windows PC sharing the Printer has a password or not):+
    +smb://username:password@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does have a password+
    +smb://username@ipaddress/printersharename <- Print Server does NOT have a password+
    +(eg. smb://[email protected]/ip4300)+
+8. Enter a Name and Location. (Human Friendly Names with Spaces are allowed)+
+9. Now select the appropriate driver and then click "Add"+
+10. Try printing somthing and then it will ask for a username and password of your windows server. Type and username and then the password and then add this to your keychain and click OK.+
+And there you go. Printing in OSX 10.5+

  • Print from iBook to Windows shared printer

    Hi
I would like to be able to print from my iBook through my airport extreme base station to my desktop which is running Windows (XP SP2).
The printer is connected to the desktop not via the USB port on the AEBS.
Is there a way for this to work? I have bonjour installed on my windows desktop but it only sees the printers i have installed on my ibook.
    Please help...
    Many thanks in advance

Hello -- Thanks for the post. I would like to know if you have tried this procedure to connect to a windows printer that is shared via a server on a subnet different from the macintosh's subnet?
    Thanks.
    Yes.
This is how I did it. There may be an easier way.
But Bonjour sure did not help.
Listen very closely - it is much harder than it
    should be.
    1) Make sure the Windows printer is shared. Use a
    sensible name with no spaces.
    2) Go to System Preferences and click on "Print and
    Fax"
    3) Press on the + button to add a printer. The
    printer browser panel will appear
    4) Hold down the OPTION button. (no really - this is
how you do it) and click on the MORE PRINTERS button
at the botton of the browser pane
    5) A sheet appears - in the top-most pull down select
    ADVANCED
    6) In the next pull-down (called Device) select
    Windows Printer via Samba.
    7) Type something into Device name.- whatever you
    want to call it.
    8) In the devide URL type this.....
    smb://username:password@workgroup/computername/printer
    name
The user and password have to apply to the windows
    machine.
The workgroup is the name of the Windows workgroup
The computer name is the name of the windows machine
and the printer name is..er.. the name of the shared
    printer.
If your username has spaces - it could all go
    horribly wrong.
    9) Then use the Printer Model - to select the printer
manufacturer and model. If your printer is not
    there... you may be skrood.
    10) Finally press ADD!!!!!
At this point you can select your default paper size.
Remember to select A4 if you are in Europe.
    Then try printing something.
Not exactly typically Apple "just works" - but it
    does work!
