Windows Updates GPO and restarts
Our environment consists of 15-20 Windows 2008 virtual servers, and ideally I would like for updates to download and install at a specified time. Getting that right seems easy enough via GPO, but what I am trying to avoid is the server auto-restarting afterwards.
My goal is to just be able to go in manually after scheduled updates should have occurred and reboot the server on my own.
I can see where you can enable "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations", but my concern is the "logged on users" part.
Meaning, I log on and off to my servers via RDP to do anything. So with that in mind, if my scheduled updates are taking place late at night when nobody is "logged on", it would seem this setting would have it auto-restart because nobody appears
logged on. Am I thinking correctly on this?
this topic gets discussed a lot in the WSUS forum, since it's all about the WUAgent behaviour and the settings WUAgent is influenced by (and some settings are offered by GP but are not honoured on all versions of Windows).
Although the templates and settings are part of GP, it's not actually a GP function, it's actually a WUAgent thing.
WUAgent settings are a little "misleading", in that you can nominate the day/time to perform a scan + install, but you can't control the day/time of any subsequent restart, using basic GP settings (which is why there are other products like ConfigMgr and
3rd party products, both of which use the WU APIs and SDK)
Lawrence has written a number of blog posts on his solarwinds blog, detailing the various settings and how they behave, on different versions of Windows.

Some computers download and install the two approved updates, others only download Windows Update Agent and not the approved updates.

Windows Update KB2973112 and KB2977629
We have a software package developed in .NET.
On Sept 9, 2014 Windows update KB2973112 and KB2977629 updated the ieframe.dll file for Win7, 64-bit machines. This causes our software to crash after each save
or sometimes just moving from page to page.
Doing a search on Google reveals that we're not the only company with this problem.
How do we contact the engineers at Microsoft to fix this update on their next 'Patch Tuesday'?
I've tried soooooo many different channels, and nobody seems to take responsibility for it.
Can anyone help to point me in the right direction? For now, I'm having to ask our customers (using W7) to uninstall these updates so that they can continue to use our software.
Many thanks

While running windows updates KB2971850 and KB3000850, error 80070002 appears.
Original post
here. Was told to post in this forum.
Both KB2971850 and KB3000850 fail.
Running Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64 bit.
Steps tried:
- Log on as Administrator
- Stop Windows Update Service and clear SoftwareDistribution\Download and DataStore.
- Perform clean boot by disabling all startup and all non-MS services
- Download and run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab
- Download standalone installers for each KB update
Absolutely nothing works. Looks like other people have had the same error however one of the above steps always seemed to fix it.
Can anyone help?Hi Gardnerp2,
You can follow these steps to troubleshoot this kind of issue:
You can't install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Update GPO - Important versus Recommended/Optional - Getting Microsoft Optional
I'm looking at the
Computer > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
elements. There's an item for "Turn on Recommended Updates via Automatic Updates".
What I'm hoping to do is to enable the Recommended / Optional updates for Microsoft updates ONLY.
I am NOT referring to the "other Microsoft products" updates.
I do NOT want to get the third party updates and drivers (i.e., nVidia drivers) via Windows Updates that show up as recommended/optional updates.
I do want to get the Microsoft roll-up's and other Microsoft recommended Windows patches, security fixes, etc.
Is there a way to get the Microsoft recommended/optional items but not the third party items?
I'm running Server 2012 native with Windows 8.1 clients.
It seems odd that there is no GPO element to control this.Hi,
Windows Updates are classified as Important, Recommended, Optional, and Featured. Here's what they mean:
•Important updates offer significant benefits, such as improved security, privacy, and reliability.
•Recommended updates address non-critical problems or help enhance your computing experience.
•Optional updates can include updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft to enhance your computing experience. You can only install these manually.
>>I do want to get the Microsoft roll-up's and other Microsoft recommended Windows patches, security fixes, etc.
You can set Windows to automatically install important and recommended updates, or to install important updates only. The following policy setting is used to configure clients
to automatically install important updates:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Configure Automatic Updates
If you also want to automatically install recommended updates, you should enable the setting
Turn on Recommended Updates via Automatic Updates as you mentioned.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Windows Update isn't restarting properly.
This problem started a few days ago when windows started to nag me about updates like it does normally. So, as usual, I hit postpone for 4 hours a few times and then restarted.
When I restarted the computer it restarted as usual but didn't display the traditional "Configuring Windows Updates..."and when it started back up again lo and behold... it was still naging me and after restarting about 5 times it still won't work
and is really growing on me because I want to install stuff like VB and Windows Live Essentials and I can't do that.
Does anyone know what on earth is happening?Hi,
As I know, if the Windows update installation itself is frozen, you might not see a "Preparing to configure Windows", "Configuring Windows updates", or see the similar message for a very long time.
I think the updates are not fully installed. Most often, this type of problems are due to a software conflict or a preexisting issue that simply wasn't brought to light until the Windows updates started installing. Much more rarely they're caused by a mistake
on Microsoft's part regarding the update itself.
Since you can't access Windows normally, try doing a system restore in system recovery environment. During the System Restore, be sure to choose the restore point created by Windows just prior to the update installation.
For your reference: Startup Repair
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows7/products/features/startup-repair
While a System Restore is a more direct way of undoing changes, in this case a Windows update, a Startup Repair could be helpful if a System Restore isn't successful for some reason.
Also, test your computer's memory. It's possible that failing RAM could be causing the patch installations to freeze. Luckily memory is really easy to test.
Update BIOS. An outdated BIOS isn't a common cause for this problem but it's possible.
If one or more of the updates Windows is trying to install is involved with how Windows works with your motherboard or other built-in hardware, a BIOS update could solve the issue.
Hope it helps.

The other day I opened firefox after the latest update in September. Firefox then closes and then i get logged off and vista(32 bit) restarts. I get back to login and when I try to login it gives me the blue screen and restarts again with the selection screen (start in safe mode....)I was able to login on safe mode and then on admin afterwards. Thinking the problem was just an error I went back and opened firefox on my account and the loop started again. I was forced to remove firefox but I want ti back and I want to know how this can be fixed so I can put it back on my computer.
See below -- the way I asked the question the first time may not be clear. This post was a goof but I can't figure out how to delete it

Script to query OU for last Windows update date and time
Hi All, I need help in writing a script which can query an OU in active directory and then return most recent date of windows updates installation. It will also be helpful if the script can sort the names and then send output to a file (any format will
do). I know basic of querying a local computer but not remote query, I am terrible at scripting side of powershell. Thanks people.I am referring to the script below, how can I get the result to output in an XLS or CSV format, I tried couple of combinations but couldn't get it to work.# This script shows the last time that a successfull Windows Update was installed.clsadd-PSSnapin quest.activeroles.admanagement

Windows Updates Loops (Please restart your computer to finish installing updates
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the response! I am a little confused though. Which update do you mean? I am seeing quite a few pending.Hi All,A ton of our clients have recently been getting caught in a loop of "please restart your computer to finish installing updates", configuring the updates, and then restarting to come back to the exact same thing. The updates never seem to apply. I know this is not a new problem, but the old methods do not seem to be working to fix it. Here is what I've done/ what I know so far.1. We use CentraStage RMM for patching. I've looked into it and it does not appear to be a problem on the CentraStage end.2. So far I am only seeing this on Windows 7 machines.3. I believe this started sometime in the last 3 weeks, and has definitely been going on longer than 2 weeks.4. No updatesare "failing" that I can see (see screenshot 2). The same updates appear to be pending after every reboot though (even though it is definitely configuring...

CALL TRANSACTION ... UPDATE 'S' and Restartable Update Request
Dear experts,
I have a program that calls a transaction by using the CALL TRANSACTION ... UPDATE 'S' statement. This transaction then performs a database update by using CALL FUNCTION ... IN UPDATE TASK statement. The database update may cause an error due to the primary key conflict.
One behavior that I notice of my program is when the database update raises an error, the corresponding update request in the update table log (SM13) will be flagged as error and non-restartable, eventhough the update module in question is restartable. Why is it like this?
To make my question clearer, I attach my transaction, program and update module below. They are very simple.
Update module:
FUNCTION z_121_15_update_module.
*"*"Update Function Module:
*"*"Local Interface:
*" IMPORTING
*" VALUE(IMP_ZSCARR_CUSTOM) TYPE ZSCARR_CUSTOM
INSERT into zscarr_custom values imp_zscarr_custom.
IF sy-subrc NE 0.
WRITE sy-subrc TO subrc.
MESSAGE subrc TYPE 'A'.
ENDIF.
ENDFUNCTION.
Subroutine in the transaction that calls the update module above:
FORM save.
zscarr_custom-carrname = sy-uzeit.
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_121_15_UPDATE_MODULE' IN UPDATE TASK
EXPORTING
imp_zscarr_custom = zscarr_custom.
COMMIT WORK.
LEAVE TO SCREEN 0.
ENDFORM.
The program that calls the transaction whose the subroutine above:
*& Report Z_121_15_COMPLEX_LUW_19
*& Program that calls a transaction.
*& Called transaction(s): Z_121_15_CLUW_20
REPORT z_121_15_complex_luw_19.
DATA:
it_bdcdata TYPE TABLE OF bdcdata,
wa_bdcdata TYPE bdcdata,
subrc TYPE char10.
wa_bdcdata-program = 'Z_121_15_COMPLEX_LUW_20'.
wa_bdcdata-dynpro = '100'.
wa_bdcdata-dynbegin = 'X'.
APPEND wa_bdcdata TO it_bdcdata.
CLEAR wa_bdcdata.
wa_bdcdata-fnam = 'ZSCARR_CUSTOM-CARRID'.
wa_bdcdata-fval = '01'.
APPEND wa_bdcdata TO it_bdcdata.
CLEAR wa_bdcdata.
wa_bdcdata-fnam = 'BDC_OKCODE'.
wa_bdcdata-fval = 'SAVE'.
APPEND wa_bdcdata TO it_bdcdata.
CALL TRANSACTION 'Z_121_15_CLUW_20' USING it_bdcdata MODE 'E' UPDATE 'A'.
*IF sy-subrc > 0.
WRITE sy-subrc TO subrc.
MESSAGE subrc TYPE 'S'.
*ENDIF.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
HarisWhat I mean is, for example, when the called update module in the code below issues a type A message,
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_121_15_UPDATE_MODULE' IN UPDATE TASK
EXPORTING
imp_zscarr_custom = zscarr_custom.
COMMIT WORK AND WAIT.
then, in SM13, the corresponding update task will be flagged as non restart-able, eventhough the update module itself is defined as restart-able.
This also happens in the case follows: let the code below is a part of a transaction program that calls an update module
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_121_15_UPDATE_MODULE' IN UPDATE TASK
EXPORTING
imp_zscarr_custom = zscarr_custom.
COMMIT WORK.
and the transaction above is called by a program by using
CALL TRANSACTION 'THE_TRANSACTION_ABOVE' ....... UPDATE 'S'.
Am I correct? This is my conclusion so far. -
