Wireless Mac to Mac using SSH

While connecting my iMac and iBook, or iMac and MacBook via a wireless LAN, I have selected Personal File Sharing and Remote Login in System Preferances/Sharing/Services. I can always connect, but not under SSH. I always get a warning, and can connect with less security.
The MacBook reads specifically. "To log in to this computer remotely, type "ssh AJPulley@macbook" at a shell command prompt."
Perhaps, I don't understand what it is, nor what I need to do, or do correctly.
iBook G3 700MHz dual USB 640 MB, G5 iMac 1.8GHz 1.25GB, MacBook 1.83MHz 512MB   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I don't the ins and outs of all of the services that the Mac offers. However, to get a shell command prompt, you need to start the Terminal app (from the Utilities folder). Then, you would enter the command
ssh AJPulley@macbook
in the terminal window and follow with a return.
Here is some info in Mac Help about Personal File Sharing and Remote Login:
Allowing remote terminal access to your computer
If you allow remote login, you can use SSH (Secure Shell) to log in to your computer from another location.
You can't use Telnet to log in to the computer.
Open System Preferences and click Sharing.
Click Services and select the Remote Login checkbox. Selecting Remote Login also also enables the secure FTP (sftp) service.
Now you can use an SSH client to log in from another computer.
For example, if your user name is steve and your computer's IP address is 10.1.2.33, you can open Terminal on another Mac OS X computer and type:
ssh -l steve 10.1.2.33
Type "man ssh" at a Terminal shell prompt for more information.

  • Can't configure wireless settings on P1102w using a mac

Hi there. I can't configure wireless settings on P1102w using a mac. I have it installed with USB just fine but I want to use eprint (with ios airplay). I run the setup utility looking for some wireless setup option, but it never appears. When I finish the install it tells me to go to the eprint website to download eprint. At that site it has me download the firmware update, which I do, and then at the end of that it tells me to go to the eprint website again, which then downloads the firmware update again. It's an endless loop.
I know I need to get to the built in web server but the config page tells me I don't have an IP address. Which makes sense to me because it hasn't been set up.  I can't for the life of me find how to set up the wireless using the driver software on the Mac OS. I try to follow the manuals instructions, but it looks like it is designed for windows users, and the buttons it tells me to look for just don't exist on the mac HP driver software.
    Can you help?

    Hi,
The Wireless configuration should be made by using the EWS page, which also accessible from Mac OS over a USB connection through the printer setup.
You may find the steps listed below:
Click the Apple icon, then clickSystem Preferences.
    Click Print & Fax.
Select your printer and click Open Print Queue.
    Click on Printer Setup
    Then select Utility
    Click Open Printer Utility
    Click HTMLConfig. The EWS opens.
    Click the Networking tab
Then click Wireless from the list on the left
Under Communication Mode, click Infrastructure, select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click the << button.
From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication, click WEP or WPA/WPA2. Your selection  depends on which Wireless Security Protocol your network uses.
Type your WEP/WPA/WPA2 key in the appropriate field, and then click Apply.
In the confirmation box, click OK and then close the HTML Config and Print Queue windows.
Once done, allow 3 minutes to fully establish the connection, then unplug the USB.
Enter Print & Fax and remove the existing USB Print Queue.
Click the Plus button and add the printer over the network.
Please let me know of any issue,

  • Using ssh to access my mac

Can anyone tell me how safe it is to enable remote login to use an ssh to access my mac from outside computers?  I am taking programming classes and use my mac mini, macbook pro, and also (very, very rarely) Windows computers on campus.  I want to be able to access programs I'm writing from all locations.
    Thanks

In order to use SSH from a computer that isn't yours, you would have to enable password authentication and enter the password. That wouldn't be safe at all. The only safe way to use SSH is to restrict it to public-key authentication, which means that you must have a copy of the keypair on the client device.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this - do you mena connect to the Mac to access streaming media or perhaps you were wondering if the AppleTV can behave as a wireless extender to give network access to the PS3 - it can't.
If you are looking for media server solutions there are several available that run on Mac, some free some commercial.

  • Wireless MAC filter can not be active to connect to WIFI?

I use a Linksys router with WEP security and a Wireless MAC filter. When I turned off WEP I was unable to connect to the router with my iphone 3g but when I enabled WEP and turned off the MAC filter I connected right away.
Has anybody else seen this or has anyone successfully connected to a router with a MAC filter?
    Thanks

I have no problems connecting to a router with MAC filtering enabled... I would just double check that you entered the correct MAC address into your router (Settings>General>About>Wi-Fi Address) and make sure the permissions are set correctly for that MAC address (if applicable)...

  • Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme..

Can this be done? Airport extreme connected wireless in extend mode to connect a wireless Mac Pro with an ethernet cable from the extended airport extreme.

This will work.....IF....you also have an Apple AirPort router configured to provide your wireless network.
In other words, you need to have two Apple AirPort routers to extend a wireless network.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "extend" the wireless of the "main" AirPort, it will provide more wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are enabled, so you could connect your Mac Pro to any of the Ethernet ports and use that as a network and Internet connection.

  • Can I import photos from iPad to Mac using WiFi?

I know I can import photos from the iPad to the Mac using the USB cable, and importing them into iPhoto.  But is it possible to do this without plugging in the iPad - i.e. with WiFi?  I couldn't find a way to make it work.
Better still, would it be possible to automatically 'sync' photos taken on the iPad to the Mac using iCloud, without also having photos from the Mac going back to the iPad?  My iPhoto archive is now quite large, and I don't want it on the iPad.
Or are there any other approaches?
I really want to be able to use the iPad to regularly "empty" my camera while travelling, and have the iPad transfer the pictures to my main photo archive (iPhoto on the Mac) whenever it gets a chance.  If this can happen automatically, that is best.  Manually initiating it via WiFi is next best.  Mnually initiating it via a USB cable is third best - still not difficult, but more steps.

    Paul Fryer wrote:
Can anybody confirm this one way or the other?
If you have 800 photos on the iPad in the Photo Stream, those 800 photos will appear in the Photo Stream in iPhoto. However, if you have 7000 photos in albums in iPhoto, they will not appear in the Photo Stream on the iPad unless you place the photos into the Photo Stream. Photo Stream is its own album in iPhoto and your already imported photos in iPhoto will not appear in there unless you add them to the photo stream.
Look at one of the WiFi photo transfer apps such as WiFi Transfer App. You can send the iPad photos to your Mac using Safari on the Mac and then Imprt them to iPhoto as you see fit. You cannot send the photos directly into iPhoto with these apps.

  • Bridging network to non-wireless Mac

I have 2 Wireless Linksys routers, 2 Airport Express Base Stations, and 1 Airport Extreme BS 11n. I had been using one of the Linksys routers and one of the Airport Express Base Stations to connect to my DSL modem and host my wireless, connect a couple of wired Macs (2 minis), and a network printer (via the Base Station since the Linksys doesn't have a USB port).
I bought the 11n Base Station and the 2nd Express Base Station in the hopes that I could bridge the airgap between the 11n Base Station and the Express Base Station over wireless and then hook a non-wireless OSX Mac to the Express. It now appears to me though that the ethernet port on the Express is really only for set up of the Express itself and cannot be used to provide network access to a non-wireless-enabled machine. Am I wrong about this? Does anyone have any ideas on how to hook a non-wireless Mac into a network when stringing an Ethernet cable to it from the router isn't a viable option?
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    Regards.

I bought the 11n Base Station and the 2nd Express Base Station in the hopes that I could bridge the airgap between the 11n Base Station and the Express Base Station over wireless and then hook a non-wireless OSX Mac to the Express.
Yes, this is possible and is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
    Here's how ...
    AEBSn - WDS Setup
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the MAC addresses for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS.)
    Main Base Station Setup
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as the main base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the main base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window.
o Enter the base station password if necessary. If the base station is using the
default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the MAC address of the base stations you want to connect to this base station.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
    Remote Base Station Setup
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as a remote base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the remote base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Enter the base station password, if necessary. If the base station is using the default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Enter the same network password as the main base station, if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the MAC address of the main base station in the WDS Main field. The MAC address is also referred to as the AirPort ID and is printed on the label on the bottom of the base station.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

  • WRT54GX Wireless Failure, Empty Wireless MAC, No Wireless Light???

I have a WRT54GX v2 wireless router which has worked fine for a long time. I had it disconnected for a while and when I reconnected it, the wireless part of it no longer works. I've reset it. Hardware reset it. Restored factory defaults. Upgraded firmware to 2.00.20. Nothing seems to matter. Wireless is definitely enabled and configured properly via the web interface but no matter what, wireless no longer works. In the status page, the MAC address for the wireless router is blank: Wireless MAC Address: Mode: MIXED SSID: linksys Channel: Encryption Mode: Disabled Channel will also be blank if I leave it configured as auto, it will show up as the right channel if I manually select a channel. So has anyone seen this? Is the wireless functionality of this box hosed and I need to junk it or is there any remedy?

You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Does Tiger require ownership (and sharing) of wired printers on a wireless LAN? My G4 (Tiger) is also wired to the LAN, and can access all wired printers through the router. Wireless Macs cannot even find the printers.

Does Tiger require ownership (and sharing) of wired printers on a wireless LAN? My G4 (Tiger) and all printers are wired to the LAN, and the G4 can access all printers through the router. Additional wireless Macs (Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion) cannot even find the printers. Yet, if the G4 shares the printers, then ALL computers on the LAN can access them. However, this requires the G4 to remain powered. Is there a workaround that would allow me to shut down the G4 and still use the printers?

    Hello BDAqua!
Well, I am halfway there. Following your steps on the Snow Leopard MBP, the newer printer (a Canon MX860 inkjet) appeared automatically under the "default" icon on the ADD printer window. I used the IP icon with the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol to find and add the older printer, (an HP 4000N). That required running a configuration page from the printer to locate its IP address. I printed to both printers through this laptop with success!
I then followed exactly the same procedure with the Mountain Lion MBP. For both installation attempts, I got an error message window: Unable to verify the printer on your network. "192.168.111" may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Would you still like to create the printer? If I click Continue, it creates the icon and name in the printer list. However when I attempt to print from an app. the next message says, 'Printer is unavailable.'
Why one laptop finds and uses both printers, and the newer laptop does not, just floors me!
Thank you for your ongoing assistance.

  • Access to my home MAC using mobile.me

I need to access my machine at home from remote places. I have read and applied various comments and tips from this forum. But there is still no access.
I have a mobile.me account. When both machines are logged in in the same network with the same router, my MacPro tells me that the function "Back to my Mac" is activated while my Powerbook gives a warning that my router might not give access because of a mysterious issue with a NAT protocol.
MacPro is connected both via Ethernet and Airport, the portable machine only via Airport, both with the same router.
I am asked to enter this "ssh <user>@<computer>. Sounds easy. But I do not know where to enter this.
    Thanks for helping.

MobileMe and Back To My Mac should not need ssh. Sounds like you are mixing multiple solutions.
MobileMe does require some specific NAT features in your home router. Maybe it is time to get a new router (or maybe just upgrading to the router's latest firmware), as Back to My Mac would be a better overall solution.
Using ssh requires manually configuring "Port Forwarding" of port 22 to your home Mac. You need to enable System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Login on the home Mac. If you want screen sharing, you need to enable Sharing -> Screen Sharing, and for file sharing you need to enable Sharing -> File Sharing. And because finding your home router's IP address is a pain, you get a Free Dynamic DNS name from No-IP.com or DynDNS.org and run the dynamic DNS update utility on the home Mac.
Now on your remote Mac, you open a Terminal session (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal), or you go over to <http://MacUpdate.com> and find a GUI based ssh setup utility. Now you create ssh tunnels for screen sharing and file sharing
    ssh -L 22548:localhost:548 -L 22590:localhost:5900 [email protected]
    open vnc://localhost:22590
    open afp://localhost:22548
If you use one of the GUI ssh setup utilities, the command line operations should be handled by the GUI.
However, unless you are comfortable with using MobileMe and Back To My Mac assuming you can get your router (or a new router) that will work with Back to My Mac.
Another option would be using TeamViewer.com or LogMeIn.com (both have free options).

  • EA6300 Wireless MAC Filtering

I have two EA6300s. Ive set up one as the main router and it is configured with MAC filtering.
I intend to wire the second to the first and use as a wireless access point. The issue however is when the second one is put into bridge mode, under the wireless tab there is no longer the option to configure wireless mac filtering.
The result is the devices can connect to the second router (the access point one) and use internet OK, however devices which are not listed as "allowed" on the first router are able to connect and access the network. (the devices fail to get a connection if connecting to the main router - as it should be)
Is there any way to configure the EA6300 to act as an access point however still retain wireless mac filtering?
    Thanks in advance

The 2ndary router itself wont be able to ping since it uses the WAN port to ping to the internet. While in wired AP mode, the WAN port isn't used.
If connected devices get internet thru the 2ndary AP, then you good to go. Just think of it as a Internet Pass Thru..
