Wireless printing - general question

Hello, 
I am considering buying a OJ Pro 8000 Wireless. How does the wireless work? Is it only ad-hoc with one PC or does the printer associate with an access point and then is available to entire wired and wireless subnet?

The latter is the primary purpose and most common installation.  
Ad-hoc is also supported, although it is not very reliable and interrupts any infrastructure wireless with which the computer is associated.

  • Wired/wireless traffic general question

    I originally set up my Airport Extreme without much expertise on WiFi or routers, but I want to raise my knowledge base now.
    My current question: In general operation with both ethernet and wireless clients, obviously all the traffic with wireless clients is broadcast over RF to anything out there that can receive them, but is any of the traffic between the base station and the ethernet clients also broadcast over the RF signal? To put it another way, can eaves dropping on the RF traffic also allow eaves dropping on the ethernet traffic?
    Are there any good educational books like a Missing Manual or such on WiFi or Airport?

    A lot of very interesting aspect of "others experience w/airport". I'm also in a suburb w/a lot of WiFi, other variation's of the same, and Airport traffic. One early concern I had was the  Rf-AP system starting up, as it does right out of the box. Not knowing this, (at least at first) was for me an embarrassing  wake-up call. As for near-by WiFi/and other "dish, etc" systems, A few thing's I noticed, and thanks to associate's who know WiFi/Rf tech very well, a few observations, for what it's worth. Regarding "Ghosting" of certain signals, it is almost inevitable for many reasons. It's a bit like (usually and harmlessly) being at a crowded party, where you "hear" many people jabbering away, but don't really know "what they're saying, other then 'something."
    Oddly enough, I have an associate who calls that (a bit like a cheap hearing aid) "Rf, or harmonic din". As for it being problematic from a security point-of-view one needs to isolate "sections" from one "broadcast" which I'm told is rather low tech, as a first step to having one "borrow your specific signal,' for say either sub-Walmart (cheap bas******) access to the net thanks to your WiFi AP. As you mentioned, w/so much depending on the chronic pain that's all based on passwords, well, we know the issue w/that.
    Several aspects of trying to maintain some dignity in not getting hacked for whatever intent present repeated problems. I was hacked, and it was (unfortunately not benign). Believe me. Since , I have done everything short of active EW suppression (FTC, and anyone in range would be understandably ******-off.) Your comment about "flat signal strength" I'm told is screaming, "I'm blending in, move on." Varying sig strength is one way to blend in yourself, but only a bit. 
    But WiFi signal structure has certain quiescent properties reported in the literature (I read it on physorg.com, or technology review I think) that makes that soft engulfing-Rf nature of WiFi useful, Ex: for those who want to know, or really just be aware "someone, a pet", etc; who is moving around a room, compared w/the stuff in a room, building, etc. That attribute provide's a technical/mathematical  yardstick that is at least one reproducible and exploitable aspect of the technology. As with that noisy background "party din," it's why noise in general can be cut through as long as you get even a small piece of a conversation.
    I've looked at passive material "blankets" that smother Rf. Certain conductive polymer's woven in the density of a gym mat are somewhat useful if its something serious enough. Naturally, (pricey) and by no means perfect. Beyond that one can use old power company techniques developed to know where a line goes down, for example if using a hard line. Since ac can be modulated, it can also be run through what looks like a small old desk-top pc cpu tower. ****, anyone can buy a plugin, looks a small 120vt-12v transformer you plug in the wall ac, and that turns ones household wiring  into a local, house/office Rf wireless network.
    In the end it can get surreal, silly, paranoid. or just sad. Been there too. Anyway, best of luck. Bob.      

  • EAP-TLS Wireless Authentication - General questions

    Hi,
    I want to use EAP-TLS as a method of authentication for users/computers to join the Wireless. Devices that will connect to the Wireless are part of the domain.
    What certificate is preferred to use for this purpose? Computer o User certificates? I guess that it probably depends on what you want to identify or authenticate, a user or a device, but what option is “generally” recommended?
    Is there any difference from the point of view of security? Is a computer certificate more secure than a user certificate o vice versa? I have been told that user certificates are easier to compromise (or steal from a windows machine) than computer certificates
    even if a user doesn’t have Admin privileges in their machine?
    I have also been told that using user certificates could result in some issues to pass some Compliance audits.
    I would like to be sure that the design complies with the most recommended and secure alternative.
    I would appreciate some help.

    There are pros and cons to using workstation or user based certificates, as well as benefits to using "both". But first thing, both user and computer certificates are secured in the same way in the operating system - in an encrypted state. There are reasonable
    controls in place, but anyone bent on hacking a system and has physical control of it, has many options available to them. Things like Bitlocker with TPM can help mitigate many of these attacks. The purpose of certificates is to increase the security and integrity
    above passwords. It's not foolproof.
    The benefit to using computer/workstation authentication is that when the computer boots up, it joins the WiFi and enables domain users to log on. This is even the case if the user has never logged onto the computer before. The workstation has a secure channel
    to a domain controller and is fully managed and applies GPO updates. In this model, the WiFi connected machine is no different from a wired machine.
    The disadvantage is that you need to carefully manage your computer devices in AD. Imagine the scenario of a laptop that is stolen. Do you have the means to know which computer object it is and to disable/delete it from AD? If not, then whoever uses the
    computer will be able to get onto your WiFi. Many organizations have trouble with this aspect.
    User Authentication is a little easier as its easy to manage users who should be allowed to get onto a network. If they leave, their account is disabled. However, they must have cached credentials on the laptop
    they want to use as there is no means to contact a DC to authenticate a user the first time.
    Another option to consider is to use BOTH. In this scenario, you issue certificates to both the computer and user. When the computer boots, it joins the WiFi. When a user logs on, the computer stays connected
    to the WiFi for 60 seconds to allow the user to authenticate and to receive their credentials which are then used to authenticate to the WiFi. If the user is not authorized or is unable to authenticate, then the WiFi is disconnected. This provides the best
    security option, but it means managing both user and computer objects properly.

  • Mac OS Lion - General Topic - Wireless Printer, Scanner, External Harddrive, Disk Management

    Dear All,
    I just fall in the mac world since I got an ipad and then an iphone and was very happy about these product I did purchased a mac mini server (Mac OS Lion 10.7.2 I think, basically the last version available).
    But now I need to learn about the Mac OS world and this is not straight forward, particularly regarding my existing hardware devices installation (printer, scanner etc...).
    I have some queries below, anyone who could help me is welcome.

    1. I have a wireless printer Samsung CLP315W for which I could download the driver and print through the USB cable but I did see yet how to make it work through the WI-FI network. I mean in windows, the printer was detected as shared printer on the network. How does it work here ?
    2. I have a scanner canoscan Lide 30 which looks unfortunately not supported by Lion OS: indeed I could download the scanner toolbox labelled for "Mac OS" but I got the message: "PowerPC application not supported".
    Do I have any chance to make this scanner working or must I throw it in the paper bin ? (I must say I am not satisfied by my Mac in this respect, I would expect a better compatibility with hardware devices.
    3. I do have an external harddisk with various informations in as pictures, pdf files, offices files (word, excel) etc... This is a LaCie which was NTFS formatted with my previous computer based on windows OS.
    At a first instance, it was recognized by my mac OS but all folders appears in read-only.
    Do I have a way to apply the change to "full access" for all folders at once ?
    Why is it in "read only" in mac OS when it is not under windows ?
    Assuming I expect to continue using this disk as external backup but also expect to be able to access to it by windows OS computer, what is the best format ?
    4. I bought a mac mini server with 2*500Go disk, but I just wonder: how to use this disk ? I mean I would see one disk as backup, somehow safe and the second use on daily basis when applications stands.

    Hi jean-jack,
    The first thing you should look at, is if your are Mac enabled. If they are not, then there is a great chance that they will work badly or not at all.
    About your questions:
    1. Normally a Mac is supposed to detect it automatically and make it ready to use (try printing a document to see if this works). If your Mac doesn't recognize it, you can always add it manually in "printing and scanning" in your system preferences. This is accesible by just entering it in Spotlight (magnifying glass in the upper right corner) and adding it via the "+" icon (you may have to enter your password first using the lock in the lower left corner). After that he should recognize it as a WiFi printer and you should be able to use it.
    2. Since it concerns an older scanner, it is simply not supported by Lion (Lion doesn't support PowerPC applications anymore). Therefore it is sadly ready for the trash can.
    3. To change the accesibility of your hard disc to "full acces" you have to ctrl+click on the hard disc in Finder. In the drop down menu, you'll see the option "info". This option will open a small screen that allows you to adjust the settings for "sharing and responsibility" (found at the very bottom). Nevertheless I highly recommend you to format your hard disc to "exFAT" or "FAT32", because they give a much better compatibility to your Mac and are also readable on a Windows computer. You can do this by entering "disc aid program", once again in Spotlight. In this little program you are able to adjust the format of every single hard disc connected to your computer. Also not that this progress will completely erase all the files on your hard disc.
    4. To split the hard disc into partitions, you can use the same program explained above. Simply choose your hard disc and press "adjust size". Here you can divide your hard disc into different partitions, which will be seen as different hard discs.

  • Wireless Network/printing Newbie Questions....

    Okay, first of all I love Airport and OSX Tiger on my new MacBook. I recieve a strong wireless internet connection in my Los Angeles apartment, and I have NO idea where it's coming from! (my neighbors? The police station across the street,? Just in the air?!?)
    I want a wireless printer. My apple store highly recommended either an Airport Extreme or Express with a printer attached to the USB port...
    My question is this: If I just buy a laser printer with built in wireless (802.11b/g) network capability (say the HP LaserJet 1022NW), can I just set up my MacBook to communicate directly to the printer with Airport via the 802.11b/g standard? I notice the Airport menu gives me a "Create Network" option...?
    Is it this easy?

    This option is for creating computer-to-computer (ad-hoc) networks utilizing either the AirPort menu or Internet Connect for creating and connecting to this type of network.
    It may be possible for a wireless printer, which supports the "ad-hoc" network type, to connect to the "computer-to-computer" network. (With "ad-hoc," as opposed to an "infrastructure" network type, the wireless network would not require a router or access point.)

  • Airport Express questions on wireless print serving

    I have a wireless network setup using a linksys router and thinking about using an Airport Express as a wireless print server in another room. I currently have a Canon MP500, 2 wired PCs connected to the router and 2 wireless laptops one Windows and an iBook. Would the Airport Express connect to my existing wireless network to act as a wireless print server for my network?

    Hi, does anyone know how to change the port setting on Windows XP Pro. I recently purchased an Airport extreme and the network is working great, however when I tried to set up the printer the documentation left some key peices of information out.
    I had followed the step for installing a printer, but when I got to the point about specifing the adapter type, the documentation in the manual that came with the Airport skipped over that part. I guessed at the adapter and unfortunatly (and obviously after reading the instructions here http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1008.html) I chose the wrong adapter. Now I want to go back and fix it but I can't figure out how. When I tried to run the add printer wizard again and the port setting wizard it said the port (IP_10.0.1.1) was alread in use and kicked me out of the wizard.
    How do I change the settings on the port to the correct settings?

  • Don't see my post - how long does it take? question on non-wireless printer and new fios network

    have a canon ip5000 - not wireless printer.  We just installed our fios network with 2 mac laptops and an imac desktop.  We also had been using an airport extreme and airport express (as an extender) with our cox cable modem.
    we cannot seem to hook up the canon to the network.  We ended up plugging the printer into the airport extreme and the airport extreme into the router.  However, the airport extreme now appears as a separate network on the - you can see it in the list of  networks  at the top of the screen.  so you have to toggle between our network for fios -- and then the the network for the airport extreme in order to print.  
    There's got to be a way to connect up the printer to the fios router?
    logging into fios router - you can see the print server is on the list -- however it says inactive -- and never changes status.
    sorry if this is a duplicate to my previous post - I'm new here and not sure how long it takes tfor these messages to appear

    Actually ... go into the Airport and turn on "bridge mode".   Then go into the FiOS router and turn off the wireless.   Connect the WAN port on  Airport to one of the open ports on the FiOS router.   This will allow you to continue to use your Airport as the wireless access point, and continue to have your printer attached like you have had. 
    It may be necessary to change the IP address of the Airport in this configuration (think bridge mode will suggest one for you -- but essentially and address somewhere on the 192.168.1.x that's not used -- I suggest 192.168.1.254).

  • Problem consistently printing via new (summer 2011) AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION and Brother wireless printer (model HL5370DW). What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer. I'm a newb here and will try to offer as much detail as I can about the dilemma at hand.
    Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
    Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
    Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
    My theories:
    - true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
    - The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
    QUESTIONS:
    - Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
    - I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
    Rule out:
    - wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
    provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
    One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
    standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
    WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
    In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
    algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
    (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
    of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
    lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
    vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
    key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
    hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
    versa.

    Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
    I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?

  • Can I connect a wireless printer to two wireless networks

    I searched and couldn't find an answer to this exact situation. The answers to similar questions didn't seem to work.
    Can we share a wireless printer over two wireless networks without adding hardware or changing the wiring or doing complicated software modifications?
    Here is my set-up:
    Cable Modem> Linksys Wireless Router “N” on the first floor > older AirPort Extreme “G” via ethernet cable on second floor > Laser Printer via USB Cable on the second floor, plus an AirPort Express to extend the area on the second floor. We have 2 MacBooks and 1 MacBookPro that connect to the internet via either of 2 wireless networks. Generally, for better connection, you choose “N” if you are on the first floor and “G” for the second floor.
    Currently, if you want to print to the USB Printer, you just select it in the print dialog box. It does not matter if you are on Network “N” or Network “G.”
    We just added a new wireless Printer that’s on the first floor. (No, I didn't read the directions, the printer screen said if there is a W?? button on your router, press it. I did and it automatically connected to the “N” network. It also has its own email address for printing without a computer, but that still doesn't solve this question.)
    If you want to print to this printer, you must first change the computer’s AirPort setting to join the “N” network. If you don't, you still get the print dialog box, but eventually you will notice that nothing happens. The document just sits in the Printer’s queue.
    Is there a way to get a computer on the “G” network to find the wireless printer on the “N” network without first changing networks?
    Remember, it automatically finds the USB printer that is plugged into the “G” network router.

    It used to be that if you wanted to wirelessly extend the range of a network, you'd have to set up a WDS. (WDS = Wireless Distribution System.) There was no "Extend a wireless network" option and no "Allow this network to be extended" checkbox—you'd have to fill out lots of WDS information yourself. It was sort of a pain.
    Then, with the 802.11n AirPorts, Apple introduced the "Extend a wireless network" option, greatly simplifying the setup process. It accomplishes the same thing as a WDS, but it's easier to set up and has less overhead. However, it can only be used if every AirPort in the wireless network supports 802.11n.
    Your Express may support 802.11n, but your Extreme is older and does not. So "Extend a wireless network" won't work for your network. That's why you got errors when you set the Express's "Wireless Mode" option to "Extend a wireless network." Instead, you'll have to do things the old-fashioned way* and configure the Extreme and the Express to be part of a WDS. Your network will still work as desired: the Express will rebroadcast the signal from the Extreme, and clients will connect to whichever station has the stronger signal. It's just that you'll be using the older WDS technology instead of the newer "Extend a wireless network" feature.
    "Join a wireless network" is something different entirely. You'd use it if you wanted to connect to a network but not rebroadcast it. This could be useful when, for instance, your main router isn't an AirPort but you want to use AirTunes. In your case, however, this option wouldn't be very useful.

    *Actually, the old-fashioned way would be to use modems. Or to forget about the internet and send snail mail instead.

  • Resolution - Printing HP LaserJet & Linksys Wireless Print Server WPS54GU2

    Hello Guys:
    After trying to figure out for 10 days and calling HP, Applet and Linksys support, i finally am able to print to my printer.
    I have iMac running Tiger 10.4.8. I have a HP LaserJet 1012 Printer connected in a USB Port to the Wireless Print Server WPS54GU2. This is what I did to get it working.
    First install the following drivers:
    1) Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/ and download hpijs-foomatic-2.0.2.ppc.dmg and espgs-7.07.1.ppc.dmg file. Install hpijs first and espgs second.
    2) After that Go to Server Preferences, Double click on Print/Fax.
    3) Click on the "+" sign, select Line Printer Daemon - LPD
    4) In the Address field, enter the IP address of your print server.
    5) In the Queue name (This is very important). I used L2 for USB. You can try P1, L1 as well. Not sure how you have connected to the print server. For me L2 worked. I had tried using L1 and P1 and it didn't work for me.
    6) The Name field should automatically be populated.
    7) In the Print Using, select HP and then select "HP LaserJet 1012 Foomatic/hpijs" as the printer or whatever driver you have for your printer.
    8) Click on Add
    And now open up text edit or something and you should be able to print.

    Try Repairing permissions (Disk Utility). Then restart, then add again.
    What do you mean by the printer doesn't show up - the driver (print using:)?
    You can try the generic HP Photosmart P1100 Gimp-Print driver that comes in OS X.

  • Hp - photosmart e-all-in-one wireless printer cn731a- nothing prints??

    Went through setup on Windows 7 64-bit, printed the test photo, came out great.  Thought everything was good to go.  Later, when trying to print a document, it wouldn't print.  Computer popped up a message saying "Successfully printed" but when I went to the printer, there was nothing there.  I tried running a wireless network test on the printer's screen, and once that page printed with the results, immediately after that, the document I was trying to get finally printed.  This was an early Christmas gift for my parents, & my mom just informed me that she tried to print again today, but nothing happened on the printer.  I am out of town now and am not able to troubleshoot on my own on the printer like I did a couple days ago so came here for advice.. Any idea what the issue might be? Did I maybe miss a step after doing the test print of the photo?  Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Try the below steps ..
    While the printer is ON, Unplug the power cord from back of the printer.
    Disconnect all the cables that are connected to the printer.
    Wait for 30 seconds.
    Plug in only the Power Cord. ( Printer would Power on ).
    Try making a standalone Color copy of a document . If it fails to print a copy, then it could either be an issue with the Ink cartridges  or the Printer .

  • Wireless printer offline when it isn't offline

    I set up an HP all in one printer and when I try to print from my macbook pro the printer is "offline." I also have an ipad and it prints just fine to the same printer. Why?

    That's a really good question, one that I have yet to figure out. I have, however, used a workaround that seems to work in our small network.
    We employ a number of different computing devices in our network ranging from an old eMate 300 to a new iMac running Lion. Amongst them is a Snow Leopard-based Mac mini that cannot see the WiFi based HP Photosmart C6180.
    (I should note that the other Mac OS X capable computers cannot access the Mac mini via WiFi Bonjour... the Mac mini shows up in the list of Bonjour devices yet when attempting to Screen Share or File Share to the Mac mini from any of them, the attempts ultimately fail with a "not online" type of message.)
    Our workaround was to keep the WiFi radio on inside the HP printer to allow all of the other devices access to it via WiFi and to physically connect the printer to the Mac mini via USB. Now the Mac mini can print quickly and without error while the rest of the computers still see the printer via WiFi.
    I'm not sure how well this workaround will work for a laptop that cannot see the wireless printer. Physically connecting a laptop to a printer is fine if both are in close enough proximity but one would need a really long USB cable if roaming around the office or home is desired.
    JJbogs, if your printer has Bluetooth, maybe turning it on and pairing it to your MacBook Pro might give you better results? For that matter, iPads also have Bluetooth so using that network instead of WiFi might be an acceptable alternative?

    I have a brand new HP 6500 A plus wireless printer.
    I tried to print using hp eprint center by sending a pdf as attachement to printers email address.
    But the printer doesn't like the pdf and prints a error page instead with below message.

    The issue was not with the printer, but that the PDF document itself was a secured PDF document.
    I tried copying the document from my pc to mac and tried to open the document and what i saw was exactly what got printed earlier in my first post.  Tried attaching to my email and when downloaded, the document had just those text that got printed (also pasted below).
    Finally got it working when directly printed from the pc over wireless(or wired). Looks good now .

  • HP Photosmart series 7510 wireless printer issue

    I have a  HP Photosmart series 7510 wireless printer.   
    My laptop is an HP Pavillion Entertainment PC dv9700.
    I am running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2.
    The printer stopped responding when I attempt to print something from the laptop, such as a web page or document.  When I print a diagnostic page it goes and responds right away. 
    Any ideas of what I may try.  When I set up a regular print job it just stays in the que and does not print.

  • HP 7510 AIO printer won't stay connected - Wired workstatio​n, wireless printer

    Hi!  I spoke (and checked solution button) too soon. The printer still "disappears" from the Wired XP network workstation. The only difference since applying the solution given is that the disconnects are now happening about every 12 hours, vs every couple of hours.
    Ink notification is set to "only when I print"
    Static IP is set for all machines
    HNDU works -- when the printer is visible but will hang the workstation if printer is not visible.

    Printer: HP 7510
    Network:  multi-station wireless, thru DLink DI-632 (one PC hardwired to router)
    Address Config:   Printer is using static IP -- outside of DCHP range (192.168.15.240)
    Printer Config: Each computer has static IP set into the control panel app, using IP addressing.
    Operating System:  XP (Service Pack 3)
    Other devices:  Ipad, Xoom and Kindle Fire (all working using ePrint)
    Network Security Protocol: WEP (we're out in the country)
    Network Setup:  Main router, along with 2 access ports (hardwired); currently using channels 1, 5 and 11 (again, we're in the country and have little competition for channels)
    File Sharing: All machines in network have one open "share" drive, accessable with passwork.
    Scenario:  Wireless computers appear to stay connected for several days to a week at a time. (We reboot weekly, just as a SOP)
    Computer that is wired to the network loses communication with the printer a couple of times a day and needs to be rebooted in order to restore connection.
    When this happens, other machines continue to print and scan, with no problems, and the wired machine continues to have its name displayed in the SCANNING panel on the printer -- but the printer won't talk to it.   All network functions, including internet and intranet access to the printer's EWS is still available.  I have noticed that if I go into check ink levels, though, that the ink check software behaves differently. 
    Normally in the ink status app, there is a small "working" icon with 6 dots. When this computer is connected properly, it will start jumping around the circle, showing activitiy, get to 41%, and then display the ink status info.  When the printer/computer connection is not working, the "working" icon will go to just a couple of percent then jump to the printer information page, showing make, model, serial number, firmware level etc.
    In every instance so far, rebooting (with no other action) brings the printer/computer connection back to life -- until next time.  I am trying to find any other pattern for this behavior, just can't identify it yet.
    I started out with the plain vanilla installation, but then every computer in the network would consistently drop connections, about every 45 minutes. Using the info on this forum, I've eliminated the drop-outs for those printers, and got to the Static IP solutions (we've done that anyway for years with net-ready machines).  This is the last machine that "drops off"  It appears that some piece of HP-required software is "dropping out" or getting clobbered, but I cannot see a pattern, even checking and noting the various software used locally on the machine, and the various websites visited. So far, no pattern.
    I am hoping that an HP guru with access to the source for the "ink supply" status software can take a look at what is happening and why it will always go to 41% and then display ink status (when connected) and then only go a couple of percent and display the ink status (when it isn't connected).

    In last paragraph, above, the request for "ink status" is returned with a static display of the printer firmware version, driver version, step level, MAC# etc of the printer, not "ink status" when the printer is disconnected.
    Also, when printer is disconnected the HP home networking utility will hang the system -- a hard reboot is required, which restores the printer, until the next time it goes "into the woods".  Signal stregth, measured on the printer, is 4 bars (very good).

    Thanks!  That appears to solve the problem.  After your suggestion, I remembered that I set the "ink level warning" on this machine ONLY to "Always warn me", as opposed to "tell me only when I am printing".  That seemed to be the problem. Only the computer that was set to "always warn on low ink-levels" was disconnecting -- the others worked fine! Now, all are working fine.
    Just to be safe, though, I've also turned off the "scan from printer to computer" function on each computer. That was set for each machine, and seemed to work fine. The other machines in the network did not disconnect, and the printer was tracked whether each computer was on or off.   May try to turn it on later; I'll see if the family uses that feature very often!

    I spoke too soon!  After about 26 hours, the printer connection on the one "hard-wired" CPU dropped, which is better than before, but still not solid.  Same exact symptoms as before. Only piece of the puzzle that was different this time is about 50 pages were scanned, some to this computer.  Used the "Scan requested from CPU" process, rather than enabling the "Scan TO Cpu" function in the software app.  It did not drop the connection immediately after -- about 1 hour to 1.5 hours afterwards.  Suspect this is a coincidence, not a cause of the problem with this machine.
    I also scanned (same approach) from one other CPU on the network -- that wifi connection is still rock-solid.

    I think it is fixed now.....the problem seems to reside in the module that will notify you immediately if ink is low (vs notify me only when printing).  If, when initially installed, the user selects "immediately", then the printer will randomly disappear. (More on "re-finding it" later.)
    Also, it is difficult to change the ink notification setting, because it appears not to be "sticky", but will sometimes, flip. (I've not figured this out yet).  As long as the setting for "low ink notification" is on "only when printing", life is good.
    If the printer does disappear, go over to the Advanced tab when the printer software/firmware page comes up, instead of the current ink levels.  Reset the selection about "tell me about ink notification" to "only when printing", and then toggle the "autoshut off" from "NEVER" to "2 hours" and then, finally, back to "NEVER".  Then, lastly, press closed on the panel.  Printer should be connected again. To test, go to the Photosmart 7510 app again, and select "Show estimated ink levels".  The counter will start at 1%, jump to 41% and then bounce around until it displays the ink level.
    FOR HP TECH:  Please consider making the "ink level notification" persistent in the registry OR provide a de-install tool that will completely clean all traces of the prior installation of the 7510 driver / app in the registry, so that a new install may have this setting saved correctly.
    Hope this helps some of you -- it's an excellent printer once its running!
