Wireless scan shows stale SSIDs

Windows 7, SP 1, 64-bit. Described issue seen with both internal Centrino Advanced-N 6235, and external USB wifi, so I'm calling this an OS issue, not a driver issue.
If I am connected to an access point, and that access point is turned off, both the Wireless Network Connection pullup and
netsh wlan show networks (run as administrator) continue to show that I am connected to the access point.  This persists for 20-30 seconds or more, including multiple refreshes of the scan. If I was
not connected to that access point, it continues to show in the scan as if it were available for connection.
Basically, the scan list contains stale SSID information, and I would like to find a way to flush the stale SSIDs from the list so that it shows only current SSIDs.
Prior to SP 1 there was a hotfix for what looks like the identical problem, observed in a slightly different way:
    "This issue occurs because the
WLAN API provides an old BSSID to the application after you move the computer to a new access point."
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2385405
In that case the user was connected to an access point prior to hibernation, moved the laptop to a location out of range of that access point, came out of hibernation, and the WLAN API continued to report connection to the out-of-range access point.

Hi linuxilike,
As you stated it has something to do with the WlanScan function and WlanGetAvailableNetworkList function.
Here are links for reference of the WlanScan function and WlanGetAvailableNetworkList function :
WlanScan function
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms706783(v=vs.85).aspx
WlanGetAvailableNetworkList function
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms706749(v=vs.85).aspx
As the descriptions stated :
"When the WlanScan function is called, the native 802.11 Wireless LAN driver may flush the current list of available wireless networks before the scan is initiated. "
"The WlanGetAvailableNetworkList function allocates memory for the list of available networks returned in the buffer pointed to by the ppAvailableNetworkList parameter when the function succeeds. The memory used for the buffer pointed to by ppAvailableNetworkList
parameter should be released by calling the WlanFreeMemory function after the buffer is no longer needed. "
The Wlanscan function is related to the Wireless LAN driver,it seems that Wireless LAN driver didn`t flush the current list of available wireless networks before the scan is initiated ,or the WlanFreeMemory function didn`t work .
Have you tried to update or reinstall the Wireless LAN driver to have a check ?
" Is there, for example, a timeout that can be set to 0 so that SSIDs expire from the list the first time they are absent from a network scan?"
Do you mean the expired SSID will disappear after several refresh scan or the issue will persist?
Best regards

  • Hp6700 Printer: can't connect to D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router when Broadcast SSID is set to NO.

HP6700 Printer:  can't connect to D-Link DI-514 Wireless Router when Router Broadcast SSID is set to NO. My MAC LapTop and HP LapTop both work with the SSID set to NO. If I change the Wireless Router to Broadcast SSID is YES, then the HP6700 Printer can connect to the Wireless Router. I setup the Printer telling it what the SSID and Password were, the same as both of my LapTops, but it never connects, unless I change the Router to broadcast the SSID. Help!
    This question was solved.

Did you try updating the firmware on the DI-514?
You can also try setting a static IP on the printer, then assign the printer to the static DHCP list in the router interface.
To give your printer a static IP address:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
    - Click 'Apply'.
Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
After this you will have delete and re-add the printer on your Mac.

  • Wifi devices showing my SSID 3 times.

Hello.  First off, let me say I am new here and have only some experience setting up wifi, etc.  I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before or is something simple I've overlooked.  Wireless devices are showing 3 SSIDs.  I am using 2 airport extremes.  I purchased this newer model in March or so (MD031LL/A 802.11 A/B/G/N Model No. A1408 with simultaneous dual band 802.11n "and twice the range of 802.11g."  I previously had the MB053LL/A (Model NO. A1143) 802.11n also.
I had been running the new model fine, not completely certain all of my settings were optimal, but no major issues, except the 2nd floor of my house had problems dropping out at times, and I have, like many people now, a wireless printer, ipad, iphone, appleTV, wifi bluray, TV, and one MacBook Air  (1.7 ghz mid 2011) and a Macbook Pro.  After some slowing which may or may not have been related to upgrading to Lion, I bought the new AE and things seemed to improve, or maybe the settings were just new, I don't know.  Lion also had several updates.  I ramble, I apologize.
So I decided rather than selling the old airport extreme, I was told I could use it to extend my network.  So I placed it on the 2nd floor and set it up to extend my network.  Things seemed okay, and the new AE had 2 SSIDs, 'orange 02 and orange 02 5ghz'.  I don't understand how this works, or which I should be connecting to, but again I digress.  I need to read up on this.  So I had to setup my bluray for wifi and it listed 3 networks (2 'orange 02' and 1 'orange 02 5ghz)
If I go to the 2nd floor there is still a corner that is a dead spot where nobody can get wifi, but luckily we don't go in that area often.  But computers on the 2nd floor seem to lose the internet connection randomly (wifi bar shows it is connected) and so I reconnect to a different SSID, 5ghz usually.  Or sometimes it's the otherway around.  Right now, since our central air decided to stop working in 95F heat, we are downstairs, closest to the new AE and all using the orange o2 5ghz. (see screenshots below)
What am I doing wrong?  Why is it showing this extra SSID, how do I know what to connect to and is it possible my settings are not right?  My apologies for rambling and perhaps not using the right questions or researching this more on my own, but I did google this and it linked me to a question (unrelated) on apple support dicussions.  If anyone has any answers or insight, please reply.  I want to learn.  I can provide screen shots or whatever info you need.  Or perhaps I'm not able to use the older Airport Extreme as a way to extend the network.  I also am very confused about the whole 5ghz, etc.  When looking at other wifi networks around me, I do not see any others listing as duplicates.
    Thank you,
Izaq (Davin)  (please be kind, this is my first post)
    p.s. screen shots below
also, current speedtest.net (connecting at a nearby server) showed 11ms ping, 35.97 Mbps download and 6.48 Mbps upload. (not sure how that ranks for the amount of devices I have)
and this screen shot from Wifi Explorer:

Wireless devices are showing 3 SSIDs
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting two bands... one 2.4 GHz and the other at 5 GHz using the same wireless network name, or SSID, so that is where 2 SSIDs are visible.
Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality from either band depending on their capabilties.  An iPhone, for example can only connect at 2.4 GHz. A newer laptop can connect at either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, so it will pick the best signal...automatically.
The third SSID is from the other AirPort Extreme that is extending the signal from the first. This is an older single band device, so it can only extend one band. If this device were dual band, you would see 4 SSIDs.
The AirPort Extreme upstairs is automatically extending the strongest signal that it receives, which is likely the 2.4 GHz band since these lower frequencies are stronger than the higher frequency 5 GHz signals.
Everything appears to be normal according to the information in your post.

  • Weird wireless networking showing up in my range

I have two off wireless networks showing up in my range. They are: 1. Jet blue hot spot 2. Triple a network Does anyone have any idea what these are? They definitely look suspicious.

It could be your neighbor's wifi. Use a more unique SSID for your wifi. And make sure that when you configure your router, connect it manually (wired) to your PC - do all the necessary settings then save.
You'll never know, you could be changing someone else's wifi settings when you're doing it wirelessly.
A unique SSID is a good way to start. Then change the default password of your router.

  • Airport Extreme - wireless scanning with hp officejet pro 7780

I have got wireless printing established between my macbook and an hp officejet pro l7780 printer. However, HP indicates that there is a bug with the airport extreme product where the wireless scanning will not work. They said there is a fix but would not say more. Does anyone know a fix for this issue?

If the OfficeJet is connected to your Airport by the USB port then there is no fix.
Scanning is not possble when an all-in-one is connected to the USB port of an Airport base station.
Can I scan using my all-in-one when it is connected to the USB port of an Airport Express or Airport Extreme Base Station?

  • Wireless scanning of Canon Pixma MX 725 doesn't work in 10.9.1

    Hello,
the built-in wireless scanning feature of Canon Pixma MX 725 doesn't work in 10.9.1.
    With USB-Connection everything is fine.
Latest Apple Drivers are installed (Canon IJScanner5 version 2.3.1). I've also tried the new verison IJScanner5 3.1.
With the Canon Software "Canon IJ Scan Utility" wireless scanning is possible.
In OS X 10.7 the built-in wireless scanning is possible.
    Any Ideas?

I haven't been able to re-create your fault on my test Mac's, but then both are clean installs of 10.9.1.
Do you get this communication error as soon as you select the MX in the Shared section of Image Capture? Or do you get the Image Capture pane appearing and an overview of the document will start, but then during the scan you get a communication error?
One thing I have noticed in testing this symptom is that neither of my 10.9.1 Mac's have the CIJ Scanner Register process running. I know this process was present at some point after Mavericks was released because I can remember users complaining about it, especially when they did not have a Canon All-In-On. When you mentioned about trashing the process I checked my Mac's and could not find the process. So on the clean install in Parallels, can you check if this process is running.

  • Wireless Scanning in Laserjet Pro MFP M128

    Wireless Scanning feature not working

    Hello @sanjay_rnc,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I would like to assist you today with resolving the wireless scan issue that you're experiencing when trying to scan from your Windows 8.1 computer to your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M128 Printer. Now, you indicate that you're using the Laserjet m128 printer. Just to clarify, are you using the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M128fw or the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M128fn (What's my Model Number)?  The reason I ask is because the LaserJet Pro MFP M128fw is wireless. However, the LaserJet Pro MFP M128fn is not.
Once you confirm that your LaserJet Pro MFP M128 is the wireless version, can I please have you start by running the HP Print and Scan Doctor on your computer. This Tool will run on your computer and 'fix scanning' issues for you. Should any driver, connection, or software conflict be found, then the HP Print and Scan Doctor Tool will attempt to resolve those conflicts for you.
    HP Print and Scan Doctor
Please respond to this post with the result of the HP Print and Scan Doctor. Should your wireless scanning issue still occur, please elaborate on exactly what occurs when you attempt to scan and if you get any errors. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • No wireless scan w/HP 1312 MFP

Wireless printing worked fine, but I need to wireless scan because I'm using an internet fax service now. This printer is so huge . . . I WANT IT OFF MY DESK. I am thinking I need to uninstall the drivers, shut everything off, and resintall drivers after I move . . . any other suggestions are appreciated.

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you have the HP device plugged into the USB port of the Time Capsule, the scan function is not supported at this port. You will need to hook the device up directly to a USB port on your computer for the scan, fax, maintenance type functions to work correctly.

  • Does the MX712 support wireless scanning using the MX Navigator EX v. 3.1.4 software?

Does the MX712 support wireless scanning using the MX Navigator EX v. 3.1.4 software?
When I attempt to scan wirelessly, it presents and error message asking if the scanner is turned off, or I need to have a USB connection to the laptop.
    Thanks - Joel

    Hi JoelAK,
Wireless scanning is supported, however, it appears you are using the wrong version of MP Navigator EX.  The version that is appropriate for your device is MP Navigator EX VER. 5.1.0.  This application can be downloaded from our website.
On this site, be sure you have the most up to date drivers as well.  Once setup, try the scan again using the correct version of MP Navigator.

  • Officejet 6830 wireless scan does not work

Wireless scan to computer file does not work ever. Scan starts and then computer losses connection to scanner before scan can send file to computer. Happens both when scan is started from computer and when scan is started from scanner. After that, browser interface reports scanning is disabled. This sometimes causes entire device to fail to respond to anything, including power switch, must be disconnected to power and reconnected to wake up. HP Print and Scan Doctor gets the same failure and cannot fix the problem. Document printing works. I have had this failure on two different scanners. I thought there was a manufacturing defect so I returned first and received another. Same exact problem.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your reply.
For that you will have to contact your network administrator, ask them to grant you access to use the resources on the local network when you are connected to  the VPN. So that you can use the printer, when you are connected to the VPN.
As I Said earlier, when you are connected to the VPN you completely on a different network (Office Network) and you are disconnected from your local network. Your local network will just be acting as a bridge.
