WISM1 (WLC 6.0.182) to WISM2 (WLC 7.2.115.1) migration
Hi all,
I plan to replace 2 x WISM1 (WLC 6.0.182) by 2 x WISM2 (WLC 7.2.115.1). One WISM in each Catalyst 6500. I am sorry it is a little long but I have no lab and I need your advice.
Summarized migration plan is the following :
Upgrade of the 4 WLC (WISM1) from 6.0.182 to 7.0.240
AP pre-download from the 4 WLC (WISM1)
Transfert WLC 7.0.240 image to the 4 WLC (last compatible version)
Transfert WLC 7.0.240 image from the 4 WLC to AP and swap AP primary and secondary image
So, AP primary image is 7.0.240, AP secondary image is 6.0.182
Scheduled reboot of the 4 WLC
So, 4 WLC (WISM1) and AP are running WLC 7.0.240
Move AP from the 2 WLC of the1st WISM1 to the 2 WLC of 2sd WISM1 Swap AP primary and secondary controller with NCS
Backup the configuration file
of one WLC of the 1st WISM1
of one WLC of the 2st WISM1
Replace the 1st WISM1 by one WISM2
WISM2 upgrade from the current WLC version to 7.0.240
Import the saved configuration file (WISM1) to WISM2 (7.0.240)
Check the configuration via HTTPS
Move AP from the 2 WLC of the 2sd WISM1 to the 1st WISM2 Swap AP primary and secondary controller with NCS
Replace the 2sd WISM1 by one WISM2
WISM2 upgrade from the current WLC version to 7.0.240
Import the saved configuration file (WISM1) to WISM2 (7.0.240)
Check the configuration via HTTPS
Upgrade WISM2 from 7.0.240 to 7.2.115.1
AP pre-download etc.
etc.
Please, what do you think about this migration plan ?
Do you have a better/simplier solution ?
Thanks
Also you would enable Authorize MIC APs against auth-list to avoid AP's fallback to the WiSM1. So, if I understand you, it would be enable on WISM1. This way AP's trying to fallback to the WISM1 will be refused and reconnect to the WISM2 that's right ?
Yes... this will prevent access point from joining the WiSM1... AP's that are already on WiSM1 will stay, it just prevents any AP's that has already been migrated to WiSM2 to fail to WiSM1.
How can I get the configuration from WiSM1 to the WiSM2 ?
Well you would backup your config and open it up in a text editor... then you would edit the file, by changing the hostname and ip address, etc. Make sure you have a trailing space at the end of each command that you change. This is important or else the config will not take. Also you will have to edit the password for the management since it is encrypted in the backup config. replace it with:
config mgmtuser password
Save the config and do a restore on the WiSM2 and verify that the setting are okay prior to moving all the ap's over. I would move one to test your wlans and make sure its fine before moving more.
Thanks,
Scott

thank you in advance for your helpHi,
By CLI:
Before change the country code on wlc , You must disable
WLC > config 802.11a disable network
WLC >config 802.11b disable network
WLC >config country SA (...or wtever country u are in)
And then enable both network again.
WLC >config 802.11a enable network
WLC >config 802.11b enable network
By GUI:
First disable both network 802.11a and 802.11b
Follow these steps to disable the 802.11a and 802.11b/g networks as follows:
a. Choose Wireless> 802.11a/n > Network.
b. Unselect the 802.11a Network Status check box.
c. Click Apply to commit your changes.
d. Choose Wireless > 802.11b/g/n > Network.
e. Unselect the 802.11b/g Network Status check box.
f. Click Apply to commit your changes.
Change country code on WLC now:
Choose Wireless > Country
after changing the country code please enable both networks(802.11a and 802.11b)
Hope it helps.

Hello everyone,
Just loaded the 7.2.103.0 software onto the brand new WiSM2. Going throught the options and have found that under the global parameters for 802.11a/n, 802.11b/g/n radios is now the "Maximum Allowed Clients" option. The allowed setting is from 1 - 200 clients.
Does that mean only 200 clients will be allowed to associate to the WLC on that radio at a maximum?
Doesn't seems to make sense... I have the 500 AP license on this WiSM2... I know this option used to be an optional setting under a WLAN in previous releases.
Any ideas?
Regards,
Sasha.Does that mean only 200 clients will be allowed to associate to the WLC on that radio at a maximum?
As what Scott has responded, this means 200 clients per WAP.
If you do exceed 200 clients per WAP (or whatever value you put in there) the clients will just get a nag and the system will let you in eventually. -
AP SSO WISM2 WLC 7.4.121
HI everyone,
I'm currently doing a proof of concept on the AP SSO feature running on WLC 7.4.121.
The first thing I would like be sure is that client SSO is not avalaible in 7.4.X release, i need to upgarde to 7.5.X, Am I right ?
The second thing I would like to share and investigate with you is about AP SSO not currently working in my topology.
I have 2 seperate C6500 (SUP720-3B) switches with 1 WISM2 in each and both switches interconnected trough a 10G port.
I enable AP SSO on both WLC that synchronize themselves trough the 10G port on a special redundancy VLAN.
They both synchronize, and everything is working (both AP database on primary and standby WLC).
What I can't understand is when forcing switchover on the primary (redundancy force-switchover command), the fallback is doing great to the standby WLC but the AP still get into CAPWAP DISCOVER state because of a timeout with the following logging message
*Feb 14 15:36:37.727: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Sequence number (0) mismatch in request messageDeleting clients for centrally switched wlan 1Deleting clients for centrally switched wlan 1Sending hreap clients to wlc on HA eventAP1cdf.0f66.90b4#% Cannot enable CDP on this interface, since CDP is not running% Cannot enable CDP on this interface, since CDP is not running., 5)14 15:37:22.934: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Retransmission count for packet exceeded max(CAPWAP_WTP_EVENT_REQUEST*Feb 14 15:37:22.934: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: GOING BACK TO DISCOVER MODE
So the SSID is unavalaible for a certain period of time as it would be with N+1 redundancy.
I also saw that some documentation said that tle WLC needs to be run on a VSS (
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/5500-series-wireless-controllers/113681-high-availability-dg-00.html) and some other say the contrary (http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/aironet-1130-ag-series/qa_c67-714540.html)
Did you manage to get AP SSO working and did you ever have this issue ?
Thank for you help !HI Max,
The first thing I would like be sure is that client SSO is not avalaible in 7.4.X release, i need to upgarde to 7.5.X, Am I right ?The second thing I would like to share and investigate with you is about AP SSO not currently working in my topology.
Yes you need 7.5 version on WLC for Client SSO.
I never seen this tiype of error, You must contatc TAC and tell them about this issue.

Hi experts,
We are in middle of deploying WiSM2s on our network, from a design point of view i am confused on where to position the WiSM2s. We have 2 DCs and from best practice architecture view WLCs should not be placed on the Data Centre segment, but it seems that is the only option i have.
DCs host 6509s, i am planning to host 1 WiSM in each DC, all clients will be on seperate subnet. Do you foresee any issues with this deployment or any security issues?
authentications are followed as per cisco recommendation, clients authenticated against AD through ACS so it is fairly secure. Will appreciate any advice.
Cheers
APAmar,
Since you are going to install the WISM2 you will be limited to where your chassis is physically installed. If we are operating under the assumption that all, or at least most, of the traffic sent to the WISM2 will eventually hit the data center I do not se a reason to move them. On the other hand if you have a lot of peer to peer wireless traffic such as voice calls and pages you may want to consider some HREAP configuration. Placement of the WISM2 will not have any affect on the authentication/encryption that you will use. Ideally when planning a new WLC/WISM(2) deployment I like to use all local mode APs with a WLC/WISM(2) at each site as well as a WLC in the DMZ to use as a mobility anchor. If you provide more specific details such as client type, traffic path, and number of clients per location I can help you with something more specific to your design.
Thanks, -
WLC 5508 - AP's are conecting with WLC but unable to regester with WLC
Hi,
I have old 4400 series wlc and recently I have configured 5508 wlc and 6 new Access Point.
when you go to MONITER - AP Join their it shows connected AP detail with AP IP address but if u see it in under WIRELESS Option their is not showing any AP's detail.
I mean to say that AP's are connecting with WLC and also getting IP address but unable to regester with WLC.
Even I have checked with remove Radius configuration also from wlc as well as from acs.
please suggest......Im not able to post info it says below msg, plesse suggest how i can provide detail.
This message can not be displayed due to its content. Please use the contact us link with any questions.
Also I like to say that after factory rest 4 out of 6 is done now 2 remain. -
Access wlc froma network defined on the wlc
Hi Guys,
i have a wlc 2504 with 7.6.130
My management ip address is 192.168.1.1/24 and i have an interface on the wlc with ip address 192.168.2.1
From a PC(wired) with ip address 192.168.2.x (network are routed) i cannot access https://192.168.1.1 when i configure on the wlc an interface with ip address 192.168.2.1
It's look like i cannot access wlc from a network defined on the wlc.
Can you help me in resolving this issue? That is by design. The WLC does not allow access from a configures interface other than management by default.
If you need to access the WLC from a configures interface other than management you need to issue the command:
config network mgmt-via-dynamic-interface enable

AP wont change primary WLC w/o re-boot.
Hi all!
I have som problem with a WiSM2-wlc running 7.3.101.0. We have APs that should be moved to an other WLC and we want to to it as smooth as possible. But when changing the primary WLC for an AP, the AP will not move to newly configured WLC. As for moving a AP to the WiSM2, its not a problem, they move to within minutes.
I have tried some different scenarios, move from and to:
WiSM2(7.3.101.0) -> WiSM2 (7.3.101.0)
WiSM2(7.3.101.0) -> WiSM (7.0.240.0)
and also tested with differnt AP-models, AP1142, AP2602 and AP3602, but same "problem" with all AP-models. I thinik that there is something wrong with this WLC, we have re-booted it but there is no differnce.
Anyone have a clue where to continue the trouble shooting?
Thanks!You´re right! For the 2602 and 3602 I only have tested WiSM2->WiSM2
So what's the problem again?
WiSM2 are running different firmware than the WiSM1.
So when your 1140, 2600 and 3600 falls back from WiSM2 to WiSM1, only the 1140 and 3600 will go across. When the APs go across, they will download the firmware for WiSM1 and reboot.
Same holds true with the APs return back to the WiSM2.
Besides, what you are doing now is about to become obsolete due to High Availability, Stateful Switch Over (AP SSO) for WiSM2. -
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .
HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

WLC 5508 7.4.X - N+1
Hi,
I don't undestand this document
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/hi_avail/N1_High_Availability_Deployment_Guide/N1_HA_Overview.html
How can the third 5508 (suport max 500 AP) backup all other WLC ? n+1 how ?
With secondary wlc configured in HA-SKU (without AP SSO) the 500 licenze are permanent ?
who can explain me.. this is a document bug ??What they're describing is HA N+1, not HA 1:1 AP SSO. This option, which is "NON-AP-SSO", allows you to use an HA-SKU or > -50-k9 SKU coverted, to operate as a dedicated +1 WLC in HA. When using this configuration, this WLC allows the use of the "hardware maximum" of the device: Thus 500 APs for WLC 5508, or 1000APs for a WISM2 (as an example). Since this WLC can wait as a backup to multiple WLCs, that's why it's not capable of the AP SSO, which requires a 1:1 pairing of the HA WLC with an Active HA WLC.
When using the HA N+1 the WLC acts the same as the pre AP-SSO "HA" concept; where you had Primary, Secondary Tertiary configs on your APs (which you may still have). All it is saying is that the N+1 HA WLC can act as one of these Secondary/Tertiary WLCs, much like a WLC you had licenesed for 250 or 500 APs could do previously.
In the past you would use, lets say a 250 WLC AP as this backup WLC. Many people were frustrated that they had to have a $60,000 WLC just sitting there "waiting for something to fail". But that's what it did. If a WLC failed, lets say one with 100 APs, this backup WLC would take on the APs and use 100 of it's 250 AP license count. If additional WLCs failed, the process continued until this backup WLC was filled.
The idea of using the HA-SKU in an N+1 is that while yes, you don't get the 1:1 AP SSO configuration, you are getting more bang for your buck in that this WLC can sit as a backup (as it did in the past) but it can accept up to the maximum it's hardware can handle in terms of AP count, not only what it was permanently licensed for. Rather than spending $100,00 on a 500 AP count WLC to backup your 2x250 AP count WLCs, why not look at a $50,000 HA-SKU that can "handle" up to 500 APs.
So given this scenario, this WLC is "backuping up all other WLCs" for whom it is a Secondary/Tertiary WLC backup.
As far as the HA-SKU "licenese", it's not "permanent" per se. With an HA SKU in N+1 you have a 90 day timer which will then "nag you" (via console) that this HA WLC is not truly intended to permanently house these APs. The idea is that if the Primary WLC failed, you would get it back online and then move your APs back to where they belong and return the HA N+1 WLC back to 0 APs. -
Emergency Version for WLC 5508 with 6.0.188
The release notes for 6.0.188 talks abt 5.2.157.0 ER.aes. But 5508 does not like the file AIR-WLC4400-K9-5-2-157-0-ER.aes.
How can I get the boot loader on WLC 5508?
On WLC 5508...
Product Version.................................. 6.0.188.0

Field Recovery Image Version..................... 6.0.182.0
On WLC 4404

Bootloader Version............................... 4.2.205.0
Emergency Image Version.......................... N/A ----------> Even though I installed 5-2-157-0-ER.aes it does not show here... Bug???Ok. In the release notes of 6.0.188 they should have seperated for 5508.

Product Version.................................. 6.0.188.0
RTOS Version..................................... 6.0.188.0
Bootloader Version............................... 4.2.205.0

When u say "The n/a issue is a bug but its with the primary image, not the ER image"
Do you mean that because my primary image is 6.0.188 which has bug to not take or show the ER image? -
Need Information For Connecting Access point to WLC 4402
Hi Friends
I need Some information for Connecting my New Access point ( Cisco AIRLAP 1242AG) with WLC(4402) Controller
In our network set up we have two WLC(4402) we needs to Connect this New Accesspoint To one of our WLC
My Access point is brand New. I need to Know what all i have to do inorder to connect this AP to the controller (from Acesspoint perspective & WLC perspective)
I need to Know what I need to do in AP to connect to the Controller
Do i need to Assign Static IP Address forAP or after connecting to the switch it automatically gets ip from DHCP and regsiter with controller??
Do i Need to Configure my AP with default gateway(the switch to which is connected ?) & DO i need to configure the AP with Controller Ip address ??
Pls Assist
Regards
SafwanHi Scot...
We tried Connecting the Access Point yesterday, but it failed....
We are using Cisco 3500 Access point ...
when we connected , first it automatically got an ip address using DHCP but following error occurred

I also Need to Know Cisco Access point 3500 can be associated with WLC 4402 ( version 6.0.182.0) ??
Pls Advice How to proceed further -
Lost connection to 4402 WLC after upgrade
I setup a 4402 this evening an everything was going great. The unit had v4.2.130.0, I need to upgrade to v6.0.182.0.
The upgrade guide requires the following upgrade path v4.2.130.0 > v4.2.176.0 > v6.0.182.0.
I began with the upgrade to .176 and everything was fine. HTTPS / SSH2 was working fine. I could ping the WLC and see both ports from the neighboring switch (cdp neigh). Then I upgrade to ver 6.0.182.0 and I could no longer HTTPS / SSH2 to the WLC. CDP neigh on the connecting switch no longer recognized one of the uplinks.
I have the switch (a Cisco 4507R) configured with a port-channel to the two WLC ports (1 and 2), the WLC is configured with LAG enabled. The port channel was still up as were both ports and no errors in the switch log.
I checked (via Console) the WLC management vlan... that seemed fine. My IP info was fine... Im sure im just overlooking something very minor... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think after sitting here for so long and trying to find it, Im having tunnel vision.
Thanks in advance!
RichNo, I didn't touch the boot strap, as per the instructions of a co-worker. I was wondering if this could be my issue.
I am unfortunately in NYC and the WLC is located in Ottawa, Canada, and no one is available patch the management port. Our " Standards" don't include the use of the management port so I didn't even have it connected.
Yes, I did have HTTP and Telnet disabled as per out "Standards".
As of right now I am dead in the water. I had a PC with Net Meeting setup, but the screen saver was never disabled. I went ot get a bite to eat, and yeah... now im locked out, what a night. Fortunately for me, this wasn't a production device. and the site didn't have wireless in the past. -
Some questions about WLC 2504 architecture.
Good Morning,
I am in the process of implementing a 2504 with 14 LWAP's... The LWAP's are 1252 and 1262's but this should not matter in reference to my questions.
Right now i have a test WLAN and Interface set up.
XXXXWIRLESS2 and the same for the interface.
Both of these are set up on VLAN 8 for test purposes. My question revolves around the actually switching and routing of the information between the AP's and the controller.
I understand that cisco moved to FlexConnect in replacement of HREAP. Why is this not a default? it seems to me that the Gig port on the WLC would be a bottleneck for you if all traffic comes back over the CAPWAP tunnel. Maybe i am not understanding the architecture of the device, but what positive benefit does this serve by sending all traffic back to the WLC instead of out the switches/router to its intended destination?
I am under the impression that FlexConnect should do all local switching, instead of sending traffic back over the CAPWAP tunnel. To me this makes more sense and eliminates bottlenecks in the network.
Hopefully someone can enlighten me.
Thank you,"Local" mode is the default mode for all the WLC, as the 5508 and WiSM2 have the ability to have greater than 1G connectivity to the LAN. This is also partially a holdover from the Airespace days when all of the AP's actually directly connected to the WLC.
Now for the 2504, I agree that if you have more than ~5 AP you should run in FlexConnect mode, especially if you have a lot of clients that are capapble of 'N' rates. But it is not necessarily the way that all implementations will go.
but again, that is IMHO.
HTH,
Steve

Hello
I have WLC connect to MLS and 30 AP connect to Access SW, my question is the best practice is to put WLC in separate vlan [means this vlan have two IP only, one for WLC and another for SVI], and separate vlan to AP?
Also should to be AP Manager IP for WLC in same vlan for WLC or AP VLAN?
Thanks in advanced...AP manager interface required only in 44xx, WiSM1 (old hardware). In these platforms ap manager & management interface should be on the same vlan.
5508/2504/etc you only required the management interface.
AP vlan does not have any relation to those. So it can be completely different vlan. If it is a small deployment you can put AP on the same vlan as wlc management. Then AP will discover WLC using L3 broadcast. If you put AP on different vlan to wlc management, you have to use WLC discovery method (like DHCP option 43, DNS, etc) for AP to find the WLC.
