  • Macbook won't boot past main apple screen

I was using my computer this morning (13" black Macbook that I've had since December) and it was working fine until I closed it to go get something to eat.
When I got back and opened the lid again, the screen was black, as if it was off, but I could make out the outline of the Apple logo in the centre. So I turned it off, gave it some time and turned it back on. Now it won't boot past the main Apple screen, where the little timer thing spins and spins and spins while apparently nothing else happens.
I left it alone for a couple of hours, thinking maybe it was overheated, but that didn't make a difference. I tried taking the battery out and restarting it, but that didn't work either. I called Apple, but my parents opted for Future Shop's warranty instead of Applecare, so they told me to search the website as "the issue is well-documented," since I have no tech support with them.
I've searched around to see where this is posted or if it's been answered a billion times before, but it's 35C in here, and my rage/frustration are ruining my ability to be rational, haha.
Anyone experienced this before / is there a resolution that doesn't involve me being without my computer (which is like sweet, sweet crack to me) for an undisclosed amount of time?
    Thanks in advance,
    Emy
Oh, and I'm not sure about the operating system version beyond that it's OSX and I regularly install whatever updates they tell me to.

Maybe Disk Utility can repair the disk this way:
    -Search your installation DVD's.
-Insert the disc 1 and sthut down your Mac
-Start your Mac again while holding down the C key
-Now your Mac should boot from the CD, this can take some time.
-After a while you will see a installation screen where you can chose a language.
    -Chose English and continue.
-Then click some time's next and agree with the "Software Agreement".
-Open Disk Utility. Top menu bar --> Utilities --> Open Disk Utility.
-Select your hard disk in the list of disks and volumes on the left side
-Go to the First Aid (tab somewhere on the right).
-Click the button to verify the permissions.
-Then Click the button to repair the permissions.
-Click the button to verify the disk.
-Then Click the button to repair the disk.
    -Exit the Disk Utility

  • Apple logo appears but won't proceed to main menu screen

My video ipod recently went unresponsive. I have completed the 5R's numerous times. I am still able to put my ipod in disk mode and it is appears in itunes when I do so. However when it appears in itunes a message pops up saying that the ipod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored to original settings. I have restored the ipod to its original settings several times. However when it is finished restoring, I have to change the ipod from disk mode by pressing the select and menu button at the same time. When I do this after a restore the apple logo will appear and then a small bar at the bottom of the ipod screen will show up as if it were downloading something. Once the "download" on the ipod is complete my ipod will restart the apple logo will show and then nothing. I have tried formatting my ipod through windows. Only the quick formatting works. PLEASE HELP!!!!! What am I doing wrong? Would it have anything to do with my firewall settings or a virus on my computer? Or is the hard drive shot on my ipod?

  • Idvd main menu won't open

I've been working on a dvd project and completed it (the chapters don't work, I've read other posts and now understand that there is a bug when going back into a project, chapters won't save) anyway now when I open IDVD 08 it goes directly to the existing project I have completed. It won't open the main menu which gives me the option to open an existing project, new project, magic idvd etc.
    can someone please help?
    thanks,

Do you mean the initial Dialog Box when iDvd'08 is first launched? (options which thereafter are accessed from iDvd's File Menu).
    if not, please explain.

Apple TV locked on screen with settings and home sharing icons in bottom half and won't let me move back to main menu. Anyone know how to fix it?

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

  • My iPad mini displays i0S 6 and won't bring up the main menu. How do I get it to show the menu?

My iPad mini displays iOS 6 and won't bring up the main menu. How do you get it to access the main menu?

Reboot your iPad and see if that lets it start up properly.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If this doesn't work, you may have to restore your iPad using iTunes on your computer.

  • Select button won't select...stuck on main menu

I can scroll the main menu so it's not frozen but when i want to select music, photos, or settings it won't do anything. (I cannot see my playlist to select any songs). I can still download songs and turn it on and off I just can't get to my songs to play them. It is stuck on the main menu page.

I have the same problem with mine 4gb second generation nano.. all I can do is skip through the songs on shuffle and I can't leave the menu screen; center/select button doesn't work at all. I can't reset it or anything. Did you figure this out, or anyone have any advice on a solution?

  • Main Menu in DVDSP3 Won't show background in simulation or burning disc

I recently upgraded from a PowerBook G4 1.0Ghz and migrated to a Mac mini Intel. I am making a DVD for someone, and when i simulated it or burned a test DVD the main menu's background (video) would show up on the Powerbook, but now when i do the same on my mac mini, it will not show the main menu's background (just the plain gray background as before you would add a asset), but will play the music i added to it. All of my other menus are exactly the same as i left them (as i did with the main one) and they still have their backrounds & music when simulated. Does anyone know why this is happening?

DVD SP 3 is not Universal Binary and should not even work at all on Intel Macs, which may the problem (though Universal Binary has its own issues also with menus it seems)
You may want to stick with the older rig for this

  • Chapters won't stop and return to main menu

I am creating a DVD with seven chapters created in Final Cut Pro. I created Chapter markers and durations in FCP. DVD Studio recognizes and links successfully with the chapters I set, but the chapters don't end, they just keep playing through the subsequent chapters until the piece is over. At the end of each chapter I need the DVD to go back to the main menu.
Any suggestions of what I can do in either FCP or DVD Studio Pro?

they just keep playing through the subsequent chapters until the piece is over.
This is normal for DVD. If you watch a film you would want this to happen.
As you have been told you can set Chapter End jumps but the user will still be able to skip to the next chapter unless you control things by settying UOPs.
You may want to make a Track for each of your Vids in future. Look into Stories if you want other options like play all etc.

  • My iMac won't boot past grey screen and it didn't come with a os x disk

My iMac won't boot past grey screen with apple. I've tried booting in safemode but that didn't help and my iMac didn't come with a os x disk.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use either of the techniques in Steps 1b and 1c to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 10
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 11
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 12
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
