Working with pages

if i type a document using pages and send it to a friend who does not have a mac, will he be able to open it using ms word?

What I did and it works great is this: Edit your document in Pages. Save it. Copy the entire text of that document and paste into an email to your friend and let him do the work of moving the text from eMail into his MS Word or whatever silly Windows program he may have.

  • Working with Pages and Word-questions!

NOTE: Sorry for the similarity of this to my post a few minutes ago titled "Which do I use, Pages or Word)? I learned some things through experimentation and have created subtler and more challenging questions for you.
Help me out here (please). I am now working with Pages, sharing documents with dozens of behind the times colleagues who are using some old program called "Word." It's my job to work with these people and I'm trying to make it as easy for everyone as possible.
Do I have this right? When I create a document (or open an old Word document into pages), in order to be able to share it with people, I save it, and check the box to save a copy in Word format. Then when I send my documents, it works like a charm. Yes?
If I start by opening a Word document, and every time I save I check "save copy to Word," I end up with only one document, no version in Pages. If I start with a Pages document, or save without checking the box, I end up with two separate versions of the document (like when I create a pdf)? It appears that if I I want to keep working in the Word format, every time I save it will give me a dialog box and make me check the box (and possibly select my location). This is cumbersome since I am now in the habit of saving often (you learn that when you work with Word for the Mac for any period of time--bomb, bomb, bomb). So, an I correct in assuming that if I want to save regularly, I really have to work in Pages, and then be scrupulous about saving into Word when I'm done for the day, or just before I send? It's sort of a pain in the butt, although I can learn to do it--I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here. Also, is there an autosave function so I don't have to rely on my discipline? Or does it never ever bomb?
What happens if I open the Word version and make changes to it? Do I have to do something differently to make sure I have both versions identical? Am I better off always to open the Pages document to work on, then save and send?
Do I always then have two versions of the same document (like I would if I did this same thing with pdf)?
How do I make sure that the Word version is always up to date since that is the one I am sending to colleagues? Do I always have to save and check the box, and then select the correct document to send?
I do see that when sending a single document I can easily send it while I am in the document itself. When I do this, selecting to send it as a Word document (or a pdf for that matter), will it send the version I most recently saved, or the version that is on my screen (if I forgot to save changes)?
FInally, I'd be open to any tips from people working regularly with others who must use Word. I want it to work as simply as possible, but want to set up some good habits from the beginning.
Finally, finally, have you had problems with compatibility. I have to say that there have been very few Word document yet that I've opened that I haven't gotten a message that says that Pages doesn't support some aspect of the document and formatting is removed, or spacing is different, etc. The most common is that "paragraph borders operate differently so all borders except outside borders have been removed." I'm a bit nervous about this--will I be getting documents from others that I can't trust? Will I have to ask them to send a pdf as well so I can confirm that I got it right? Can anyone ease my mind? Or am I living in reality?
    Thanks a million!

Well yes they are not the same program so there will be differences.
For example Pages only allows a border all the way around a paragraph with few options on the style of line, which is why you got the warning.
A workflow would consist of you doing your work in Pages however you like it and when you have finished and saved, making a Word copy which you despatch to your colleagues and then throw away.
Of course this is more cumbersome than sticking with MsWord which is another option. You choose. It comes down to whether or not you have to tightly conform and interact with Word users. Maybe Pages is not for you, or even NeoOfffice which is a clone of MsOffice.
Test it. If it works and you like it stick with whatever solution works for you.

  • Is there a way to get the Mendeley references manager to work with pages?

Is there a way to get the Mendeley references manager to work with pages?  If not, what is the best reference manager to use with Pages?  I hate "Endnote" and, while I like "Papers", it does not have much support for shared libraries (with collaborators--their Livfe option only permits 50 shared papers and does not work well) or synching a single library across multiple Macs (i.e. home+work).  I need a good reference manager that supports 1) synching across multiple Macs, 2)working with collaborators and 3) has no problem importing different reference styles.  I don't want to use Word or Endnote unless I absolutely must--Pages is much better for everything else I do.  This is for use in preparing scientific manuscripts and grant applications.  Thanks.

If you have not done so already, make sure you also ask the people who make it:

Recently upgraded to Mavericks... was working with Pages documents created with previous OS ... Pages is now frozen and I don't dare force quit and loose my old documents.  How can I "thaw".... unfreeze Pages?  Have several pages windows open that I was working on.

I also had this problem after I installed Mavericks: Pages files freezing at close, need to force quit.
Workaround: when saving any document created with an earlier version of Pages, be sure to untick the "include preview in document".
For some reason, this resolves the problem.
BTW "loose" is not a verb. You probably mean "lose".

  • Does Siri work with Pages App?

I'm wonderinf if Siri works along with the Pages word processing App on iphone5? Does anybody out there have an answer for me?

no it doesn't work with pages. but you can use the inbuilt voice input to add words and sentences just by speaking to your iphone/ipad.
to do this you just need to tap the 'microphone' icon next to the space bar and the '123' button on your iphone's/ipad's keyboard then talk away.

  • How can I remove  pages 5.0 to work with Pages 09 again?

How can I remove  pages 5.0 to work with Pages 09 again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you upgraded to Pages 5.0, the Mac App Store kept Pages '09 in case you want to use it again.
To access to Pages '09, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and open the old Pages version. To access to it quickly, you can drag the icon to the Dock.
I do not recommend you to remove Pages 5.0 or the Mac App Store will be always asking you to upgrade Pages. Also, Apple will add more features to Pages 5.0 in the future. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6049?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I cannor get OSX downloaded on my computer.  My child needs to work with pages and we cannot update.

Check to see if your Mac supports Mavericks (assuming that's what you're trying to install since you're in the Mavericks forum).
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available space

    Hi,
Pretty much. However, you got the event part wrong, which is mostly my fault here. First, let put down some general JSF facts about event handling.
    1. http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/api/javax/faces/component/UIComponent.html#queueEvent(javax.faces.event.FacesEvent)
    2. So, basically, queuing an event on a component means queuing it on its parent until you reach the UIViewRoot that will really actually queue it. That strategy allows iterating components to intercept event queued on their children to record the row index as well so that the data model can be synchronized correctly during the broadcast phase (see http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/api/javax/faces/component/UIData.html#queueEvent(javax.faces.event.FacesEvent) and http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/api/javax/faces/component/UIData.html#broadcast(javax.faces.event.FacesEvent))
    3. Exceptions that aren't handled by the exception handler are thrown during broadcast or various process* methods.
So, the catch component must leverage these facts to intercept events queued on its children (by overriding queueEvent method) wrapping the original event in a custom on that flag the catch component itself as the source of the event. The result will be that the broadcast method of the catch component will be called to handle the event. The broadcast method must then unwrap the event (to get the original event), gets the original source, then call originalSource.broadcast(originalEvent) within a try-catch block.
Does it make any more sense put that way? Note that it's an obscure part of JSF so I cannot make it incredibly simple either.

    ~ Simon

  • Appleworks 5 files won't work with Pages, appearing as UNIX files

I realize Pages will not open Appleworks 5 files. However, for some reason, when I copied my Appleworks 5 files onto a hard drive and put them on my PPC G4 iBook running OS 10.4, the icons for the files are appearing as unix executable files. I had no problem opening 5 files with 6 and did so every time I opened one. I would save them as version 6 (to upgrade the file) as suggested. But, the files that were copied from my old G3 to the G4 using the hard drive to move them, are now unable to open on the G4 using even Appleworks 6.
I had planned to open them in 6, convert them to 6, then open them in Pages.
This is why people hate Microsoft and Apple is doing the same nonsense. It's bad enough to buy a brand new imac that doesn't have a Superdrive. Why put an SD card reader on the ports while leaving off useful things like the drive, or minimally a Firewire 400 or 800 port. That aside, I had no idea their own proprietary software (Pages) would be designed to not work with Appleworks 5. This is why someone can get away with refusing to use Microsoft Office, or should be the reason.
Why are these files showing up as Unix files and cannot be opened even with Appleworks 6???
    Any advice?

Unix assumes any file without an extension is an executable file. the Classic (pre OS X) Mac OS did not use extensions/suffixes, but depended on internal Creator and Type codes to identify the application associated with a particular file. Unix (including OS X) does not recognize these codes, and requires an extension.
For AppleWorks, the extension is .cwk.
Add that extension to your AW5 filenames and they should open in AW6.
As for the dropping of the Superdrive, this seems to be just the most recent step in pushing the Mac into the present. The first second was dropping the 3 1/2" floppy drive from the original iMac. Prior to that, the first Mac had a 3 1/2 inch floppy, but not the 5 1/4 inch version used earlier on the Apple ][ series. Have you had need to use a floppy recently?
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Is there anyway I can continue to work with Pages 09 on Yosemite??

I do not want to use the new pages. I depend on linked text boxes, and without this feature, most of my documents are useless.
I've read that (and experienced) that Pages 09 will not open in Yosemite.
What can I do?? I format books and CD labels on pages. If it is no good anymore, what program is comparable? Will I be able to edit my old pages documents on other optional programs?
I have 4 years of work, all in Pages.
    Help!!

You do need to make sure that any files created in or last saved in Pages 5 are exported as a file compatible with Pages 4. Pages 5 will pretty much destroy files from Pages 4, so it would be best to revert to a version last saved in Pages 5. It would probably be better to export any Pages 5 files as Word for best compatibility.
It is possible to keep both Pages 4 & 5 & have Pages 4 be the default, but removing Pages 5 is easiest. You just have to contend with the constant urging to "upgrade" to Pages 5.

  • Versions (OSX Lion) - Only works with Pages?

This may seem like a "duh?" question but here goes:  Does the "versions" feature in Lion only work w/Pages or will it also/can it be configured to work with OpenOffice or MS Word?  Also, do you have to have Time Machine enabled for Versions to work?

Versions is independent of Time machine.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/
Versions only works with native Mac applications like Pages, Numbers, TextEdit and maybe a few others. Do not expectit  to work with 3rd party editors like TextMate, Dreamweaver, Coda, etc, at least not now. My Word 2008 is not supported.
<blockquote>"Versions records the evolution of a document as you create it. Mac OS X Lion automatically creates a version of the document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working on it. If you need to revert to an older version or retrieve part of a document, Versions shows you the current document next to a cascade of previous versions — in an interface similar to that of Time Machine — so you can see how your work looked at any given time. You can revert with a click, or quickly copy and paste work from a previous version into the current version."</blockquote>

  • Business Catalyst Help | Work with pages

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/business-catalyst/using/pages.html

Ok, I can't seem to find a straight answer for this question anywhere online without something else I find contradicting it.
PLEASE can someone tell me if my clients can edit text and images on Muse sites within Business catalyst, admin?
Ido not care if it does not revert the changes to the muse application on my mac. I just want my clients to be able to maintain there text and images without contacting me.
If and when the design needs to be changed on the original muse file, I will simply update the Muse file to correspond with the site online then make the further changes after that.
I REALLY want to use Muse to create websites for my clients but if they can't update image/text content remotely then It's not going to work for me and 90% of freelance designers.
Please can someone clear this up for me.

Also, it works fine when you reference the PK column.

Just like with the paginate, the problem may also happens when you change the sort column or direction by clicking on the header.
If the item in the WHERE clause was being set fromt he URL this wouldn't be an issue because it would be saved on the Persisten Session state.
Regarding session state, there are two kinds Temporary or in memory and Persistent. When the page is rendering the item values are only on the Temporary session state. This is why the report renders correctly on page load.
The item value won't go to Persistent session state until the page is submitted. Item values also go to Persistent session when they are passed in the URL, or explicitly set with a computation, etc..
The Session state Dialog can only show the Persisten session state which is saved in DB tables. It's unable to show you the values during page render. For that you need other mechanisms like debug messages.
I think that when you set page item as SQL query and Only when current value session state is null the value must be saved to Persistent session state. If you can examine the value with the Session Dialog then that would confirm that.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • Creating a letterhead that works with Pages, MS OFFICE and Open Office

I have to create a letter head template that can be used by people on PC who have either MS Office (word doc) or OPEN OFFICE (odt) as well as people using Mac iWork PAGES. In my old PC days I could easily make a template with the letter head (some graphics and text boxes) and anyone in the office could use it. Now I am perplexed in how I can get a document with graphics (the logos and some background boxes) so that it appears as a letter head when it is opened in other computers. If I save it to a MS word document, all my graphic boxes (backgrounds) pop up to the top, the text of the company name is moved to the back (behind the graphics) and the logo is resized which means for anyone to use it on a PC they have to readjust all the stuff. Some of these people are not the brightest monitors in the unit so I can't expect them to have to redo all the graphics. And the same problem for the people who have the freebie Open Office, even a worse box of scrambled eggs with our letterhead and logo then.
Any suggestions on what I can do? We have too many people in too many locations to simply print up a box of letterheads for everyone for as few letters they do write, but we need to make sure all our letters are, shall I say, on the same page. Anyway I can create that letterhead on a blank template that won't change no matter who opens it up in what ever?

    Hi There
A possible workaround is that you could use one of the applications to create the letterhead, save that document somewhere. You can then take a screenshot of that letterhead by pressing the command + Shift + 4 keys at the same time and dragging the crosshair around the letterhead. This will save a graphic of the selection on the desktop. You can then just drag this graphic into each application as needed. If you ever need to change the details of the letterhead you will have to take the screenshot again with the edited details and drag the new graphic into your documents.
Not the most elegant solution but a workable one atleast
    Hope this helps
