X11 quits after startup

Hi All,
I've been having problems starting up X11. It crashes upon startup. Here's what my console.log says:
Fatal server error:
Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock
OsVendorFatalError
AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...
This error happened after I deleted /tmp. I then created it again but I guess the permissions on it are messed up now.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks,
KL

Hi Kok Leong,
> This error happened after I deleted /tmp. I then

are messed up now.
What did you do? Root privileges are used as much (if not more) to protect the system from the users as from attackers. You shouldn't exercise root privileges unless you know what you are doing. Can you post a long listing of /tmp and /private/tmp? The command would be:
ls -old /tmp /private/tmp
Permissions on /tmp shouldn't actually be an issue because it should be a symlink. Thus, what should matter is the permissions on the target of the link.

  • X11 crashes after startup - reinstall failed...

    Hi there,
i got problems with x11. After starting there ist the icon in the dock and in the upper panel. But the terminal windows didn't start.
Without any error message x11 was terminated. After a few tries i tried to reinstall X11 but it didn't work.
I searched and red about that trouble here but couldn't find any hint that works
    What can be wrong?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Torsten,
Without any information on which to base a diagnosis there is certainly little that anyone can suggest beyond repairing permissions. However, we might be able to help you find some information.
    > Without any error message x11 was terminated.
As verbose as X11 usually is, that's a little hard to believe. Please check your console.log to see if there's any X11 output there. Also, please post your ~/.xinitrc file.

  • After buying Adobe Premiere from the cloud, installation by (Adobe service), my InDesign CS6 quits on startup. Need help, Adobe doesn't want to fix this.

If you buy a cloud application while you have a totally legal Creative Suite Premium 6 it might stop working. Adobe made the installation by taking control of my computer. The girl did not seemed totally well trained... my opinion and right after that my InDesign stopped working!!! Now my If I call to get help they send you here because they don't want to spend money fixing that problem. So, I wonder if it's a good idea  to buy a new application from the cloud if you already are a good customer. It's probably safer to buy other CS6 or CS5 versions if you already have some. Otherwise you might be stuck to buy the entire package through the cloud even if you don't need the last versions. To solved my problem, I erased the applications with all the preferences on the second time around, reinstalled everything and InDesign still quits on startup. I have the same setup at home but this one does work.

Hi Jeff, here is a transcript of a chat I had with Pradeep. This should get you up to date with the situation. Meanwhile, i actually download the entire software from this address to reinstall the InDesign: licensing.adobe.com
Pradeep: As I understand you are having trouble with using Indesign CS6.
    Pradeep: Is that correct?
André Guernon: Yes, it was working fine like the rest of my CS6 premium but after premiere was installed it failed completely.
    Pradeep: Thank you for confirming.
Pradeep: May I know if you are getting any error message when you try to launch the software?
André Guernon: Yes, InDesign quit unexpectedly.
    Pradeep: Okay.
Pradeep: Before you get the error message, may I know if you are able to see the workspace, the menubar and the tool bars of indesign software?
André Guernon: I see nothing of the interface, the process takes about a quarter of a second.
Pradeep: I am sorry for the Inconvenience Andre.
André Guernon: Thats OK, just happy that you are here.
Pradeep: I wish I could help you with the issue but we (chat support) handle issues with  Download and Installation, Adobe CC products.
Pradeep: As the issue is regarding an old version, I request you to visit Adobe forums where our experts will be able to assist you.

  • Mail quits on startup, not on a guest account. This only happened after downloading Mountain Lion. What do I do to fix this?

A couple of days after downloading Mountain Lion (10.8.3) Mail quits on startup. This doesn't happen on a quest account. I understand I'm not the only one with this problem (understatement). Has anybody found a solution yet??

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Lightroom CC6 on Mac quits on startup after install

Lightroom CC6 quits just after startup when first installed. And Lightroom 5 has disappeared. What should I do?
    Thanks.
I found the answer on the LightRoom Queen forum. Just sigh out of Creative Cloud, then sign back in again. The details are here:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/sign-in-out-creative-cloud-desktop-app.html?PID= 7221644

I downloaded Lightroom 5 from Adobe, and tried to use the Upgrade serial number - but to no avail.
Can you elaborate? What exactly happens when you enter the LR5 upgrade serial number?
LR5 should simply ask for your LR4 serial number and the install should complete OK.

  • BSOD after startup with Win7

    Hello,
After some difficulty I got Windows 7 installed on my Mac Pro. It worked until I installed Boot Camp off the Mac OS X Snow Leopard install DVD. Boot Camp installed, but once I rebooted, about 20-30 seconds after reboot I get a Blue Screen error which says something about a cache management error. It doesn't stay up long so I haven't had a lot of time to study it. On reboot the error report doesn't give a whole lot of info, calls the error "Bluescreen", but it did reference a couple files, I can try to copy them down if it's important (they were long and I only get a few seconds to look at them).
I even tried not logging in and just leaving it after startup, same result.
It's a totally fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate on a dedicated 500GB hard drive. The only thing I've installed is Boot Camp. I've tried wiping it out and re-installing everything, same results. The first time I installed no Windows updates prior to Boot Camp, the second time I installed all available Windows updates first. Same results.
I'm not sure what could be causing this- it seems like a driver issue of some kind maybe, but it seems like if Boot Camp were inherently problematic with this hardware more people would be having this problem. I can't really think of any other factors that could be interfering... it sure seems like a conflict between boot camp and Windows 7, but I don't see how that should be the case. Despite all the trouble I've been having with this I'm normally a pretty advanced user, so I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything wrong in the install process (I've done it at my work lots of times), but I know a lot more about macs than Windows.
    My system:
Mac Pro 2.8 Ghz 8-core, early 2008 model
    Memory: 10GB- 2x1GB stock from Apple, 4x2GB from Otherworldcomputing.com
Hard Drive: 2x1TB Western Digital in a striping raid, 500GB Seagate (the Windows drive), 1TB Western Digital.
    Mac OS: 10.6.2 fully updated
I had the release candidate running for several days off this same drive with no issues back around when it came out (I erased it a while ago), and I don't think I've changed my hardware since then... although boot camp has been updated since. Perhaps somewhat ironically, Windows 7 was officially unsupported when I had the RC running, and now it's officially supported.
I'd appreciate any input, although the_hatter has already helped me out quite a bit... it seems like Windows really doesn't want to install for me! Just let me know if any more information is required.

I have exactly the same problem, down to the last detail, except that I got there by a different route.
My history is that I initially installed Windows 7 x64 Home Premium on my 2006 Mac Pro using an EFI install disk I created using the methods detailed elsewhere in this forum. Installed Boot Camp 3.0 from the SL disk then updated to 3.1. Then did Upgrade Anytime to Ultimate. Everything worked wonderfully for three months.
Then I created some striped raid volumes involving three of the five HDs in my machine using SoftRaid. My boot drive (unlike you?) is not raid. Windows 7 Ultimate continued to work perfectly.
Then I wanted to move the Windows 7 partition to a different physical HD, by restoring a Paragon Image (which I have successfully done on my MacBook Pro previously). First oddness was that Boot Camp Assistant would not create a Boot Camp partition of the whole disk, as I wanted, it would only create a second partition, even with the all the raided HDs removed from the machine and uninstalling the Softraid driver. Odd? I put the HDs and driver back in and restored the Windows 7 image to the Boot Camp partition.
This had the same behaviour you described crashed to the Cache Manager blue screen after 20 seconds. It would boot stably in safe mode so I was able to run chkdsk but it didn't fix it.
Then I repeated the whole exercise but started with a restored Vista 32 bit, and reinstalled Windows 7 X64 as a fresh install, (had to start with Vista as my Windows 7 license is an upgrade), then did the Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate, then applied Boot Camp 3.0 from the SL disk. At this point it was completely stable. Then I did Boot Camp 3.1 via ASU and got the Cache_Manager blue screen exactly as before.
Can't find anything helpful with Google about Cache_Manager crashes except the suggestion that there is some kind of massive memory leak going on during the 20 seconds before it crashes.
I have now repeated the process back to Vista 32 bit which is completely stable, and plan to try again, but this time will install BC 3.0 and 3.1 at the Home Premium stage, which is when they were applied in the very original sequence. Also I can use my Home Premium install disk to try a repair install if problems occur again.
I am only trying to get back to a state which previously worked fine, ie with Raid present, Windows 7 x64 and BC 3.1. It should be possible. I know you can't have a Boot Camp partition on a raid array, but my experience is that it was previously OK on a partition on a non raid volume, even with raid elsewhere in the machine.
Don't think I have helped you at all, but it has sure helped me to write it down! Since you posted nearly four weeks ago you may have solved it anyway. In which case I would like to hear from you!

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.

  • Safari 6.0.5 Crashing 5-10 Secs After Startup?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
Bought my roommate's MacBook Pro yesterday and did a clean install of Mountain Lion from flash drive. Updated to 10.8.4. Safari worked fine until I installed Flash Player (from Adobe's website). I have also installed Adobe CS6 Master Collection and updated Flash Player from there as well. Ever since installing Flash Player, Safari crashes about 5-10 seconds after startup and says "Safari Web Content quit unexpectedly."
I have tried deleting caches, plist files, and even wiping the system again and starting the whole process over. I have repaired permissions and still get the same problem. Chrome works fine but I prefer Safari. My desktop does not have this problem. Thank you again for your help!
    See crash log:
    http://pastebin.com/ANZLMCdV

This crash is caused by a bug in iCloud. The only workaround that I know of at the moment is to disable Safari synchronization in the iCloud preference pane. Sync bookmarks with iOS devices in iTunes instead. You may also need to do as follows.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the text on the line below to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
    Quit Safari.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
    File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmarks as you wish.
If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post again.

  • QuarK 7.3.1 quits at startup

    Greetings:
I posted this on the Quark forum earlier this week, but have not received any responses. Hoping someone here might help.
I just upgraded to QXP 7.31 for the Quark 8 promo. After fully installing Quark 7.31 , it quits at startup. I spent a better part of 2 days on the phone with tech support, going thru every conflict check they could come up with:
    1. Tossing all Quark prefs
    2. Creating a prefs folder in the Quark folder
    3. Tossing various framework files and running Quark component installer
    4. Moving all QXP extensions to disabled folder
    5. Running Disk Warrior, rebuilding the directory (which only found a couple of broken icon flags)
    6. Moved PPDs out of Library folder
    7. Ran QXP Installer logged in as Root User
    8. Creating a new user and running QXP installer
    9. Moving fonts in/out of various folders
    10. Downloading a fresh copy of the installer.
    Nothing has worked.
I am using Mac OS X 10.4.11, with over 400 GB available & 4 GB RAM. The last tech I spoke with had me send them a crash log for further investigation. I'm waiting for a response. Meanwhile, any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm feeling like I just threw $300.00 down the sewer.
Just a thought....this installer was from a download link Quark sent me. I'm thinking--maybe it's buggy? The installer never asks for my previous serial number from QXP 6, it only asks for the activation number & then goes to the user info screen. I kept mentioning this to tech support and and they were like: "really, it doesn't?" but by the second day they were like: oh, that doesn't matter because you have 6 installed, implying that it's picking up the previous serial number. Is that correct?
I'm hoping the installer disk being shipped to me will work. Until then, any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

    HI James,
Did you by chance remove the "promo" version before you upgraded? If not, you most likely have two sets of preferences lurking and according to the Quark forums, preferences can cause the upgraded version to quit at startup. And yes, an installer package can be buggy. UNinstall the promo and the upgraded version. Don't just drag the application folder to the Trash, that misses components. Use AppZapper available here: http://www.appzapper.com/ Just download and follow the instructions.
    Also, here's Quark's contact Support info: http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/support/english_support.cfm
Tell them you need a new installer.
*If the original upgraded Quark installer package is still on the drive, it's probably here:
/User/Library/Receipts. Drag ANY Quark installers to the Trash and empty the Trash*

  • Pages quits on startup with iCloud turned on

After upgrading my iPad Air 16GB to 7.0.4, iPages would no longer run. The app would start to load then quit. Reloaded the system and restored the software to the iPad and then started Pages. Without iCloud the app would start and run. Turning on iCloud would terminate the app.
I reloaded the system again and this time set it up as new and loaded only Pages. Same behavior. Pages quits on startup if iCloud is turned on. I found references to similar problems with iCloud and Numbers, Keynote and Pages going back to September. I tried logging in with a different account on iCloud and Pages ran okay. So some problem with the iCloud account. I logged into the account using safari and tried to open some of the files using the Pages web version. Some of the files would not open. I tried to download the files using select all and got non-sensical messages about different devices modifying the files and asking me to resolve the conflict. I did this for hundreds of files one at a time. I ws finally able to download some files and I then decided to clean out all the files on iCloud. I slected all and hit downoad and waited, after a while Safari reported a communication error and I was back where I was with no files downloaded. So I startd downloading them in small batches. Out of each group of 7 or 8 one or two would be bad. They could not be opened on the web or from another instance of Pages running on an iMac. the double step of downloading the file then deleting it in the web browser was taking too much time - I had over 700 files in iCloud. I started to use the Pages app on the iMac to move the files to a local folder - one at a time. Moving them also removed the file from iCloud.
Threre was no way to deal with folders so files that I had grouped into folders had to be moved out and then moved to the machine one at a time. Eventually I moved all the files over and was left with a strange structure that looked like a folder but was more like a bundle containing a plist and other system files. I was able to delete that using the web interace and my iCloud was empty!
I got pages running on the iPad and was finally able to get it to burp one time and continue to run with iCloud enabled. It moved a file I had created on the iPad into iCloud and I was able to access it on the iMac. I then moved twenty or so files from the iMac into iCloud and they eventually sunk with the iPad and I was able to open and edit the file.
My conclusion. iCloud is broken and not fit for professional use. The files you have in iCloud are not backed up and you are in danger of random corruption of your data. The tools you have to deal with the iCloud store are non-existent. Having to open each file in Pages and move it to a local folder one at a time is unacceptable. The lack of any folder level support is ridiculous. Of course maybe I just couldn't find the tutorial on doing file management in iCloud, Is any body else having this problem?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iWork.Pages
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Illustrator CS2 quits at startup

    I'm using Illustrator CS2 for Mac, v10.4.
I believe the problem may be with the fonts that need to be activated for Illustrator to open, b/c it quits as the program is starting up as it's cycling thru the fonts in the activation window. It stalls for a few seconds and quits after Apple Gothic comes up, but I don't think that font is a problem. It may be another font that I may have inadvertently deactivated in my font utility recently (but can't remember which would cause this).
I've reinstalled Illustrator, repaired permissions, and removed the .plist preference, but it still won't start.
    Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thansk, johndziner

Fixed it myself after noticing a similar message thread on the forum.
I deleted the Adobe Illustrator CS2 Settings folder and the com.illustrator.plist from the User/Library/Preferences folder. Put them on the desktop first then restarted Illustrator. Worked fine. Then trashed the old settings and .plist file---Illustrator will generate new ones at startup.

  • ITunes Freezes Seconds after Startup

    Hi,
It seems like after I installed the newest version of iTunes, it freezes seconds after startup, I literally can't do anything with it, I've even tried restarting it, and it still does nothing.
Anyone have any ideas as to how to fix it, would love to be able to add and remove podcasts/music.
    Thanks

Hello & Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I can post an error log if anyone will find it helpful.
Please go ahead & post it, most recent you can find more info the better. Your Home folder/~Library/ Logs-> Crash Logs most recent one.

  • Photoshop does not respond, once after startup!

    Hi there,
Recently, i have bought a design standard CS 5.5, after installing and using for quite some time. The Photoshop CS 5.5 does not respond whenever i want to open any Photoshop file, once after startup?
This issues has only occur in Photoshop but not my other adobe products.
    Hope to get some help!

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance etc.)?

  • [SOLVED] System randomly hangs shortly after startup

First of all: hi everyone, as of last weekend I am a brand new Arch user
My problem: I installed Arch on Friday and had no problems with it all weekend, but on Tuesday the whole system suddenly started freezing within a few minutes of being switched on. My cursor stopped blinking, mpd output stopped, and nothing would respond. It didn't matter what I was doing at the time (mostly I wasn't doing anything, or was typing a command). It didn't matter if X was running, or what daemons were running (I disabled all of them eventually). Sometimes I hadn't even logged in yet (although the fault never occurred before agetty popped up). The timing was unpredictable but it always happened within a few minutes of system startup. I could see nothing in the output of dmesg, or in any system logs, that would indicate any problems. The fact that nothing had changed over the weekend, coupled with the unpredictable timing of the fault occurrence, led me to assume it was a hardware fault. However, I had three other operating systems on the same hardware and hard drive (Gentoo, Debian and Windows XP) which all were unaffected. I did an fsck on the Arch partition but there were no problems found, and the smartmontools didn't show any cause for concern either.
Eager to get past the problem, I reinstalled Arch on the same partition, erasing everything I did over the weekend. Freshly installed, with nothing installed besides the base and base-devel packages, Arch still hung just after startup even before I'd finished creating my user account. (Interestingly, the installer never suffered from the same fault.) Still thinking it could be a bad sector or something, I installed Arch on first the Debian, then the Windows partition (who needs either of those, right? ) but neither gave me a problem-free system.
Essentially my problem is this: Arch will no longer work when it is installed or run on the exact hardware that I installed and ran it on over the weekend, even though other distros can run quite happily on the same hardware! Does anybody have any ideas? I've been bitten by the bug now and don't feel right going back to Gentoo!

by installing using the old packages on the cd rather than downloading the new ones, i was able to get a working system again. however when i did a pacman -Syu the problem returned. through trial and error i found that the problem package is kernel26 (or the modules). for whatever reason, i'm having to stay with 2.6.30 for now. is this a bug with the kernel26 package?
