X220 and z230 ThinkPad boot up issues

We have ran into the same recurring issue with the x220 and x230's. We are running windows 7 pro 64bit, and on a consistent  basis we have boot up issues, were windows gets stuck after the bios. The computer needs to be rebooted several times for it to fully boot up. Our users do have docking stations as well, anyone else having this issue?

Hi
If you're hearing noises coming from the hard drive area chances are it is failing hard drive. In which case it may be possible to target disk mode to another mac and try and recover what you can using either drag/drop methods or something like DataRescue:
http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
This ultimately could be a painfully slow experience. It really does depend on how 'screwed' the hard drive is? Only you can decide how important your data is and how much time you want to spend on it. There is a good possibility (if your data is absolutely vital) that a Data Recovery Specialist can recover the data for you? It can be very expensive. It all depends on what value you place on your data?
If your mac is still in Warranty you have an added dilemma. To qualify for a warranty replacement drive you have to send the drive back to Apple. Neither can you send it to the Data Recovery Specialist first and then send it to Apple. The reason being in all probability the Data Recovery Specialist will have to tamper with the drive in some way to stand a chance of recovering your valuable data. Tampering voids the warranty. Of course if you value your data higher than the cost of a new 3rd-party (cheap) or an Apple branded drive (ridiculously more expensive) then don't bother and replace the drive at your own expense.

  • T420S Stuck at Thinkpad boot screen - Cont. loop

I was trying to fresh install Win 8.1. It has Win8 previously and was working fine.
After I plugged in the Win 8.1 boot usb, it stuck at thinkpad boot screen and cont. rebooting.
Only thing changed in BIOS is moving USB boot up higher and disabled Computrace. Earlier it was enabled.
I can still get to BIOS by F1.
Looked all the USB port. None of USB ports are damaged or pins shorting each other. I also tested the HD by putting in my other working T500. HD is fine. Restored BIOS to default as well but no luck.
    Any idea?
Tried all the method including CMOS reset, but no help.
    Thanks for the help!

No, it does stuck in the same loop. Continuously booting and showing Thinkpad boot screen again and again.
I took the HDD out and no USB connected. same behaviour with or without HDD.
In BIOS startup is set to both - Legacy and UFEI.
Only change I had made prior to installing Win 8.1 is turn off Intel Anti theft module under security in BIOS.

  • X220 and ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock - any success?

I've just bought a ThinkPad USB 3.0 Dock for my i7 X220 having been at a site last year which had Fujitsu PR08 USB 3.0 replicators - those, once I had installed the driver, worked perfectly with two 1920x1200 displays.
Anyway I can't get my displays (LG IPS235 1920x1080), either via DVI-D or DVI-I with VGA adapter, to work plugged into the dock. They work fine when connected directly to the X220.
I suspect this might be a USB 3.0 issue as it seems the support for USB 3.0 on X220 is not quite what I'd expected (e.g. see https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X220-and-Mini-Dock-Series-3-with-USB-3-0/td-p...).
USB devices connect via the dock, but at USB 2.0 speed (which apparently is to be expected).
I can't see a network device at all (shouldn't it show up as another network adapter in adition to the built-in Intel 82579LM NIC?).
I have removed displaylink software and ThinkPad Dock software (originally I went to the latest 1.7.15 but tried cleaning everything off and using the older version 1.07.04 (no luck) then upgrading to 1.7.15 again).
I'm sure I read that this dock was compatible on a Lenovo spec somewhere. I have been through http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT073584
So far it's wasted a lot of time and been very disappointing - I'm kind of wishing I hadn't bothered  (I'm not sure if the supplier will take it back as I've opened the packaging etc). Has anyone had any more success with this dock and the i7 X220?
    X220 (4287CTO): i7, 16GB, m500 960GB, F5521gw, Win8.1 ~ I use ThinkPad on the road quite a lot. I need an ultrabook (X2*0, X1 Carbon) with 16GB & clickable trackpoint buttons!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    A quick update:
Under Windows 7 I couldn't get the dock to work at all well - basically it worked as USB2 hub and that it. This included a long call to Lenovo and reinstalling the ThinkPad dock softare several times, from both the original CD and the latest ones. Note I even installed the latest version of DisplayLink drivers (7.5M1) directly from their site which did work (core went from 7.5.5172.0 to 7.5.54051.0) but gave a useful warning that the USB3 host controller software (Renesas emulation stuff) might need updating (and I found a 2.1.39.0 version, compared to the 2.1.36 Lenovo version, which I tried too - installed but didn't help). DisplayLink also mentioned (here) that Windows 8 had a different way to deal with older USB3 controllers like Renesas.
Anyway, I was all set to try send the dock back and thought I'd try Windows 8.1 (which I'd bought and was thinking of trying out on a new SSD).
On Windows 8.1 the USB 3.0 Dock seems to work fine: display, network and USB ports. Currently I've even got 4 displays running off the X220: 2 x DVI-D in the dock, 1 VGA plugged into the X220 and the built-in screen. I don't suppose this would be any use for games, but for business work it seems to be working fine so far
Note: I installed the latest DisplayLink driver again (mainly because I thought that I was missing transparent borders - turns out that's because Aero Glass has currently gone from Win8!).
For anyone who's interested here's the USB section of device manager - let me know if you need driver versions.

  • AMD Crossfire, Boot Camp, and the new Mac Pro Issue

    Hello, all.
I have a new Mac Pro (Late 2013) with 6 cores, 32 GB RAM, and dual D700 AMD graphics cards.  I'm using an older 30 inch Apple Cinema Display (with the dual link DVI adapter).  I've successfully installed Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp.  Here's my problem...
I understand that for the new Mac Pro under Boot Camp enables AMD CrossfireX by default from multiple sources online.  However, it's disabled on mine, and every time I try to enable it (and hit "Apply" in the AMD Control Center), it disables again.
Is Crossfire only available for use with a Thunderbolt Display attached?  Could that be the problem?  Or is the AMD Control Panel lying to me?
Now, games in Windows are still running well... But I'd like to take full advantage of the dual graphics cards in the new Mac Pro with Crossfire.  Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Fixed it!
So, not only would Crossfire not enable under Windows 8.1 on my Mac Pro in Boot Camp... But Windows started crashing massively.  I was about to wipe Boot Camp entirely and try a clean install (even though the only three things I'd installed were Windows itself using Apple's exact instructions, Steam, and Skyrim), but decided in a last ditch effort to try disconnecting and reconnecting peripherals.
Turns out the culprit was my Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock.
Disconnecting the Belkin Thunderbolt dock not only stopped Windows from crashing, but now I can enable Crossfire, as well!
Now, this is especially strange since I have read elsewhere that people have no problems using the Belkin dock under Boot Camp with other Macs... This issue is probably isolated to using it in Boot Camp with the new Mac Pro.  But disconnecting the dock from my Mac Pro has solved not just one but all of my Boot Camp issues.  (Of course, using the Belkin dock under OSX on my Mac Pro is no problem.)
Long story short, if you have a new Mac Pro and plan on using Windows 8.1 under Boot Camp, don't have the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock attached.
I'm going to contact Belkin and tell them what I've discovered.
    Hope that helps y'all.

  • All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen.
I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default".
Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed?
I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault.
Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

  • P965 platnium and windows boot up issues

    Hello,
I put my computer together yesterday and everything seemed to work alright.  I was successfully able to install windows.  The issue i have is that windows will only load up once, then it will always freeze on start up.
For example last night, I reinstalled windows, got to it to load up, installed my network driver, browsed the web for a few minutes, and then restarted the computer.  Then windows froze up during start up, so i reboot, and try to boot into safe-mode, which also ends up freezing after loading a few files.
This has been very repeatable, I can always reinstall and get back into windows, but i can not restart without it freezing.  I ended up downloading liveupdate and updating the bios to 1.2, but that didn't seem to help.

  • ThinkPad SL510 Hotkey issue on Windows 10 and brigtness issue

Hi these are my issues.I have upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.But now i found that the hotkeys shortcuts for brigtness with the key Fn  don't work good. ( the sound hotkeys work perfect.) The brightness can't be controlled with the Fn+brigthness up key   or Fn+brightness down key  ( the bar that indicates the brightness blinks like something is wrong). I fast grab the bar before dissapear with the mouse and i can control it, with mouse. Most of all i find something very weird on the brightness of the screen as I am sure as i set the brightness on the lowest level  the brightness was lower with Windows 7. I mean sometimes I want the brightness on the most lower level. But with Windows 10 even in the lowest level the screen is more bright from Windows 7.  My laptop is SL 510  with Windows 10 upgraded from 7 in Greek language. Thanks a lot.

I have similar problems with my Thinkpad SL510 (type: 2847-6JG, S/N: LR ALE01):After I updated from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 10, the multimedia key that should mute the speakers was not working anymore.I have no problems with the brightness control hotkeys. Also the Lock hotkey (fn+f2), the Sleep hotkey (fn+f4), the Projector hotkey (fn+f7), the Num Lock hotkey (fn+f10), the Hibernate hotkey (fn+f12) and the Print Screen hotkey are working fine.So the hotkeys that didn't work were: the battery hotkey (fn+ f3), the wireless hotkey (fn+f5), the conference (webcam+mic) hotkey (fn+f6) and the trackpad+trackpoint hotkey (fn+f8).Here is what I managed to fix:1. After I installed the Lenovo Settings app ( https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/lenovo-settings/9wzdncrfj12p ) my camera and mic hotkey (fn+f6) begin to work.2. After I installed Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 10 ( http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds029026 ) - which was NOT designed for SL510 but is the only one I could find that was made specifically for Win 10 and Thinkpads -, my multimedia keys (including mute for speakers) were working fine BUT none of the hotkeys were working anymore, except for the brightness ones that were stil working fine. Therefore I uninstalled this and reinstalled the old one: Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8 ( http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-sl-series-laptops/thinkpad-sl510/downloads/DS014985 ) which fixed the hotkeys problem but also made the mute key unresponsive again. Here is what else I've tried without any success:1. installing the new power management for win 10 ( http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-4gxpeg )2. reinstalling old power management for win 7 ( http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-sl-series-laptops/thinkpad-sl510/downloads/DS101347 )3. instaling some of the Wi-fi Drivers TL;DRDedicated mute key for speakers, Battery hotkey (fn+f3), Wireless hotkey (fn+f5), Trackpad hotkey (fn+f8), not working on Thinkpad SL510 after updating from win7 to win10! Any helpful ideas? Thanks LATER EDIT:after trying @tasn sollution and uninstalling the hotkey driver using  http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-74261, the mute button for the speakers started to work, but now the mute button for the Mic is not working anymore...

  • MSI x58 ProE and Corsair 12GB (3x4GB) RAM Issues

    Greetings!
New poster here with a question that I cannot seem to find an answer to anywhere. I've looked over the forums but have had no luck figuring it out. My goal is to identify the culprit and replace the appropriate parts.
I built this computer in 2009 with the intention of doing OpenCL/CUDA computing and handle all my multimedia. At the time, 6GB DDR3 RAM (3x2GB) was about all I could afford. The machine works great, but lately, attempting to do some video and image processing has been hitting limits on my available RAM. I also want to run a linux VM or two. I thought I would order the Corsair 3x4GB DDR3 kit from NewEgg and not have any problems upgrading. I didn't have any plans of running the 6 and 12 GB sets simultaneously because I thought there would be some sort of memory density/timing issues.
New RAM desired: Corsair Dominator with DHX Pro Connector and Airflow II Fan - DDR3 Memory Kit (CMP12GX3M3A1600C9)
Old RAM in system: Corsair Dominator with DHX Pro Connector - 6GB Triple Channel (CMP6GX3M3A1600C8)
Request 1: Can I mix the 6 and 12 GB sets (for a total of 18GB) if I keep the density the same across each set of slots? There are 3 black (primary) and 3 blue (secondary). I was thinking of putting the 12GB in black, and 6GB in Blue.
I placed the order, received it, and went to install it yesterday. Took the existing 6GB out and dropped the 12GB in, saw that BIOS recogized it with the right timings, and proceeded to boot Windows up. Blue-screen at the very first Windows logo. I thought "well that stinks, let's check to see if the RAM is defective through MemTest." Downloaded an ISO of 4.2, fired it up, and it hung right away. Hung in the "Address Test, Own Address" test. Big fat A note: BIOS and MemTest both recognized the full capacity of the sticks.
My next thought was "Well, one of them might be bad, let's try to find out which one." I individually put each one in the first slot on the board, ran MemTest, and showed 0 problems on any tests with each of them.
Summary thus far: Individually, each 4GB stick works perfectly. In combination, they fail. The full 3x2GB set works perfectly.
My next theory was that my board might be bad (even though the 3x2GB set in the same slots has no issues). Knowing that the first slot was good with every bit of memory I put in there, I left a 4GB stick in slot 1, and dropped a 4GB stick in slot 2. MemTest hung again. Thinking it might have been that one stick, I put the other one in there, and it hung also. So, slot 2 looks suspect. Move the sticks to 1&3, and they look fine, but that still leaves me missing 4GB of RAM.
I've followed advice and re-seated the CPU, looked for bent pins (none found), and tried manually setting the timings to the 9-9-9-24 that is printed on the sticks. No luck with any of that.
Request 2: So, my question to you is what am I missing? I feel like the board is the problem, due to the slot 2 problem with the 4GB sticks. However, my 2GB sticks don't have any problems at all in the same slots. Could the 4GB sticks require a little more power that my board might not be pushing out (the board is labeled at 1.5V, the sticks are labeled 9-9-9-24, 1.65V)? Would a bent pin be causing this that my eyes just cannot see? I read somewhere that a guy had a pin that was 0.25mm off that was causing his problems.
Or should I be looking at the memory? The 3x2GB set works fine, but the 3x4GB does not.
I'm not sure what my next step should be other than replace the RAM first, motherboard second. The RAM I just got, so I could RMA it if I knew exactly what the problem was. The motherboard is approaching 3 years old and presumably is out of warranty. I wouldn't mind replacing it, but I don't want to spend money right now if I don't have to.
I don't have a second machine to test on, although I'm trying to locate one (most of my friends don't build custom PCs). I have also tried putting the 6GB in the black slots and 12GB in the blue, but the machine doesn't work with that configuration either.
Request 3: Could someone explain how I could aim for 1066MHz on my RAM? I read that on the X58 Pro-E that this resolves most problems with random bluescreens. When I try to do this, I get lost in the numbers/options within the BIOS.
Anything else I might be missing? I'm out of ideas
Thank you all so much for the help!

    Hi and welcome,
You have 2 "bottlenecks": the processor and the mainboard.
    http://ark.intel.com/products/37147/Intel-Core-i7-920-Processor-8M-Cache-2_66-GHz-4_80-GTs-Intel-QPI
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type) : 24 GB
    Memory Types : DDR3-800/1066
    Memory Channels : 3
    Max Memory Bandwidth : 25.6 GB/s

    • Supports six unbuffered DIMM of 1.5 Volt DDR3 800/1066/1333*/1600* (OC) DRAM, 24GB Max
As you can see, above 1066MHz you need to overclock both the processor and the mainboard.
    I think for your config the best shot is 3 x 4GB DDR3-1333 (9-9-9-24 at 1.55-1.60V)

  • If I partitioned my drive from within a bootcamped windows volume will it destroy my GPT scheme and disable my booting ability into Mac OSx?

Alright I consider myself a fairly computer literate person but do excuse me if this issue is not actually all that interesting. Know that I would call apple care but what I am trying to do isn't exactly supported by them so they wouldn't help me. I am setting up my system to triple boot. I did the normal method as far as I can tell. I used bootcamp assistant to shrink my drive and installed windows through that. All went well. So then I had a apprx 400gb mac os volume and a 100gb windows volume. Following the advice from the mactel team over at the ubuntu help site I logged into windows via startup+option. When I did this all volumes popped up. recovery mac and windows. selected windows and then used the windows disk utility equivalent to shrink that partition in half. When I did this I check the disk manager and all was well. all volumes were there and healthy. When I restarted my computer in the boot manager window though only the recovery boot and the windows boot showed up. After doing a little research I figured that the error was negligible and that I could fix it easily enough later so I proceeded to then format the free space volume into an ntfs for the ubuntu setup. When I did that and restarted only the windows boot shows up in the boot menu. When I look through disk manager all of the partitions are where they should be and healthy. The only real clue I've found is that when inside of bootcamp control panel instead of the different volumes showing up as they are normally supposed to it gives me the option of startup from the windows volume the ntfs volume and a pseudo volume that doesnt physically exist that serves the purpose of windows recovery. This makes me think something went wrong with bootcamp. I would rEFIt it and try to see if theres some magic I could work in there but I can't install that program on windows. Additionally I found out that theres some talk that ssd can only handle two bootable partitions and that perhaps when I added a partition it shifted priority to volumes 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. I've tried all of the bootup tricks i know and some I looked up. the only one that still works is the boot manager window. The rest just do nothing and then go straight to windows which makes me thing if something happened with bootcamp that all the very low level osx to setup and then run windows on top of that- that now the operation isn't running as planned and windows is actually touching the hardware thus subverting any attempts to use low level osx tricks to get around it. Anyway those are the facts and my thoughts.
Having done more research than when I originally wrote ^^ I now realize that the entire reason for bootcamp (sans driver issues) is to deal with the difference between  the use of GPT and MBR. I am now pretty sure that rewriting any part of the drive from software that uses MBR will mess up the partition scheme of the entire drive. Additionally I've seen a few things about ssd's being weird when they have too many partitions on them. And lastly I have an iso image of my computer right before I started tinkering so if anything I can factory reset and voila(I don't feel like pulling up a french keyboard).
picture from disk manager in windows

I actually managed to get the setup running and relatively stable. There were alot of random issues and quite honestly I was fixing my computer more often that I was using it so I backed out. If anyone wants to do this like I did I would say: It's not easy and definitely not for someone who doesn't know anything about the differences between operating systems and partitioning schemes. That being said I didn't know nearly enough and if you're careful its possible. The steps however aer pretty simple.
Before doing anything get a third party boot handle up and stable on your machine.
    1. Create a partition for Windows
    2. Create a partition for Linux
    3. Bootcamp Windows. This step can be tricky with the extra partition because bootcamp tries to handle all of it for you so it may benefit some people to bootcamp first and then create a linux partition. But that comes with its own set of issues.
    4. Run Linux setup from inside of osX NOT windows.
There are a hundred steps that could come between each of those and I neither have the expertise nor the balls to empower someone who needs to read a forum post how to do it. But it really wasn't more conceptually complicated than that.
Now on to the new issue. I was getting .NET framework incompatibilities and the whole reason I wanted the windows setup was to game so I deleted that partition. When I did that everything went back to normal EXCEPT somewhere somehow the windows boot manager is still buried and when I boot up it tries to boot into windows which obviously doesnt exist anymore. Any advise on how to get rid of this?
to make things clear I'm now running "single" partition.
    @Allen Eckert

  • Imac crashed and will not boot up

So my iMac crashed and will not boot. The power will come on and when it switches to the boot sequence it powers off.  I bought Black Tie protection at Best Buy but when I took it to them they shipped it to Apple. The problem was never fixed. Apple said it was a software issue to reload the OS. Well i did that and not even a day went by and it is doing the same thing. Any suggestions would be helpful...

I agree with BGreg that you should run Apple Hardware Test , however run it in Extended Mode. If no errors turn up run it several times. It's a lengthy test so be patient. Also here is what Apple says about your symptoms in Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup.
I hope you have been backing up your system, if not then if you can boot into Safe Mode as suggested you should immediately backup using either a clone or Time Machine. That should be the #1 priority to preserve your data.

  • OS X and Arch dual-boot on MBP - bootloader error

I have a Macbook Pro 9,2, and I dual-boot OS X and Arch. My main Arch partition is encrypted with an LVM on LUKS setup, and my main OS X partition is encrypted with Firevault 2. I run the vanilla Arch kernel, and I use xfce as my DE. I use refind as my boot manager, and grub as the bootloader for the Arch partition. This setup has worked flawlessly for several months. I update my Arch system once per week, and last Sunday was a large update since xfce got a large overhaul (in terms of program and config files). However, since the update I cannot boot into OS X (I am posting this here instead of an OS X forum since no change occurred to the OS X system so the problem must be with a change to my Arch system).
When I attempt to boot into OS X, I am asked for my password to decrypt the partition, but then I get the following error message:

When I hit a key, I get taken back to the refind menu. If I choose OS X again, I get the same error. This cycle can be repeated ad nauseam. Booting into my Arch partition, on the other hand, works just fine, with one hiccup. While usability does not seem to be reduced, after I input my password to decrypt the Arch partition, and before I see the tty1 login, I (since Sunday) occasionally get the following error message that I have never had before:

The "READ FPDMA QUEUED" line and those below it repeat a few time with different numbers following "cmd" and "res," but then after a few moments the messages clear off the screen and I arrive at my tty1 login screen and from there everything in Arch (including my now-upgraded DE) works normally. This error does not occur during all boots, but I cannot discern any pattern behind when I see it and when I do not. The OS X error and failure to boot occurs every time I try to boot into OS X.
I have learned a lot as an Arch user, but this problem is beyond me. Google has not been particularly friendly, understandably so given the peculiarity of the problem and my setup. I have not yet tried undoing the update I did on Sunday because (a) it would be a pain since there were >30 packages that were upgraded, and (b) I have no evidence that the upgrade was actually causative of this issue, though I may eventually attempt the downgrade out of desperation if I cannot find a solution. Note that the update I keep referencing did not including a kernel update.
I appreciate any advice or insight that you can offer.

I don't have much in the way of a solution for your problem, but to start with, what were the  > 30 packages? In particular, was grub/refind updated (or anything else that would likely touch your efi partition? I know from my own messing with refind, that you can potentially 'damage' your partition layout with certain commands which maybe causing osx not to boot...
Then again, the errors may have nothing to do with your arch installation and maybe indicative of a different problem all together. Normal procedure is at this point is to backup your complete disk (clone/mirror it, read up on how to do that especially with regards to the encryption systems used), and try to diagnose for any problems the mbp maybe having.
You could use an apple rescue cd (that may no longer be available with newer mbp , I have no idea..) or maybe use a different harddisk and install osx there and see if you can get everything running 'normally' thus ruling out any funky errors with the hw.  check apple's recovery options if need be.
I guess you'll just have to fiddle about a bit and try to more closely determine what the actual problem is. and again, backup your stuff!

  • ATI display driver lost with Linux and XP dual boot os

I brought ThinkPad W500 with windows vista. I want to get rid of the hidden boot system reserved partition and downgrade to windows xp and install OpenSuse os. Following some sourses found on the web, I first set the bios sata ahci mode to compatable mode. Then install windows xp and update the sata driver. Restart and reset the bios sata back to ahci mode. It works fine with windows xp and I install back all driver. Finally I install OpenSuse and create dual boot with Grub.
But a serious problem come up with me. Everytime after restart from the linux os and back to windows xp, xp doesn't regonize the ATI display divice and tell me no driver installed with low screen resolution. And I have to restart the machine and boot direct into xp for the second time and the problem gone. But it is so annoying of doing this everytime. Anyone can help? Many thanks.
    Solved!

    Hi stanleyimko,
I don't have an answer, just a couple of questions:
Does your W500 have switchable graphics?  If so, you may have to turn off "let the OS detect" or permanently select one or the other in BIOS.  XP isn't switchable aware, so I don't know why that would make a difference.
Do you see the problem on cold (re) boot to XP, or only on warm reboot from Linux to XP?
Seems like something is leaving your BIOS in an odd state (I guess that's obvious) and maybe a cold reboot would sort it.

  • Installed new screen on macbook pro 15" and now it boots fine but doesn't show the grey boot screen???

I recently installed a used but in good condition glossy display on my 15" macbook pro as mine the backlight was starting to have issues and there were some surface scratches on the screen. Anyway the screen works perfect except I don't get the grey boot screen when i start the machine up. You can tell the screen is on as you can see the backlight come on. But the screen doesn't actually show anything until it starts to go into OS X. not sure what the problem could be. I relize this is not a big issue but I am stumped on why it is doing this. Also maybe I am just crazy b/c I have dealt with the other screen for such a long time now but it doesn't seem like I am getting exactly the right colors and brighness on the new screen. I have calibrated it and all and like i said it might just be me. More concerned with the whole no boot screen issue. Anyone experience this before, and if so any solutions for me. Thanks.

It's hard to diagnose but you do have a problem. Take it to an Apple store or AASP and have them diagnose your damage. And, no AppleCare does not cover user accidents. Check with your homeowners insurance.

  • System is very fragile and has trouble booting. Hard Drive Problem?

Im having a problem with my Intel iMac which I can't solve and it really annoying me. As of lately my mac has been crashing, a lot. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on my 2008 24" iMac.
In the order that I remember them happening, here are the symptoms:
    1. Applications would not start, from the dock to from spotlight.
    2. Pressing OptionCommandEscape showed no applications in the Force Quit dialogue.
    3. Rebooting solved the problems for a while.
    4. Starting the Disk Utility in OS X will trigger 1.
    5. My fiancees account will not log in, it either freezes on the wallpaper or kicks me back to the login screen. Making the keyboard not work to type in my password on my account.
    6. Rebooting the machine now often results in booting to a folder with a ? (question mark) on it.
    7. Most recently I lost the drive completely and could not boot into anything.
Here is what i have done to try fix it.
    A. I have ran the repair disk in disk utility by booting from the install CD. However now (see 7.) I cannot even see the drive in the utility to try again.
    B. I booted with Command + s to enable the console and typed /sbin/fsck -sy a few times
    C. Holding Option while booting will NOT show my HDD only the CD
    D. I reset the PRAM by holding CommandOption+PR during boot. This doesnt seem to have done anything.
    E. to resolve 7. I pulled the power cord out for 30 mins. Then it booted.... weird
The machine overall feels very fragile and I cannot do anything with it really and its amazing if it even boots up. What are my options? The only thing I have not tried is a full reinstall of OS X. However it feels like more of a hardware issue, will this fix it? I'm not sure.
Thank you for looking and any suggestions are welcome.
    Cheers.

First, make sure your user data is backed up.
Instead of just unplugging it, use the reset SMC procedure
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac and reconnecting using a precise procedure. You should disconnect ALL cables when you do this. If you have been connecting the power cord to a power strip, connect it directly to a wall outlet for this test. Power up with nothing connected, except the power cord. If it does start up from the hard drive, connect only your keyboard/mouse and use it that way, doing the things that caused problems. Any improvement?
If not, the next thing you should try, since you have already done good troubleshooting, is probably to erase the hard drive and reinstall the software. There is a way to do this and give the hard drive a good test, so you can post back if you want more info.

  • Oracle 9i and windows 2003 R2 installation issues

    Hi All,
I have a windows 2003 R2 server with oracle 9.2.0.8 installed both OS and DB are 32bit. The server has 12gb ram and I therefore use AWE and /PAE, however when ever the number of connections exceeds >60 memory errors start to appear and sessions crash. Has anyone out there carried out a successful install of 9i and windows 2003 R2. Can anyone help with the resolution of these issues.
    regards
    Alan

    some more information
I’ve just restarted the server with its full quota of 16GB of RAM and selected both boot.ini switches (/PAE and /3GB) at server startup. I then amended the dbblock_lru_latches parameter from 128 to 64. Before I even started the database I tried running ‘ipconfig /all’ at the command prompt with the following result:
    D:\Oracle>ipconfig /all
    Windows IP Configuration
An internal error occurred: Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
is it windows causing these issues?
