X61 with Kingston SSD

Hi all,
I just installed a Kingston 64 GB SSD into my laptop, replacing the old 80 GB 5400 RPM one. The drive starts up and works fine every other time. For example, if I'm running normally, and press "Restart", I get:
2100 - Hard drive initialization error
I turn off the computer manually, restart, and...it boots into Ubuntu again. This happens every other time without fail...anyone know what the problem could be?
I updated the bios, and the firmware for SSD, can someone help me resolve this?

try with various reboot param, it's a kernel parameter that has to be inserted  @boot time, manually (to test it) or editing the grub.conf /menu.lst file.
try reboot=cold  v.s reboot=warm and/or reboot=hard v.s reboot=bios.
I'm confident you will find the right option needed to fix your problem.

  • T520 with Kingston SSD and OS Win XP Sp3 - Unmountable boot device

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with the combination of our Lenovo T520 and a Kingston SSD. The last laptop we have ordered no SSD seems to be working with the laptop. I install normally WIn Xp with SP3 the installation work very well but when I begin to install new drivers and make a restart Blue Screen with unmountable boot device. Ive tried also an Corsair SSD it results with the same effect. Do have any idea what else I can do? I've also made an bios update but that also doesn't worked very well. Do you have any other Ideas that i can try to have a better result.

Same problem here, spent half the day figuring out what was causing this, now I find another victim. Here's what fixed it for me: Restart WinXP with your ext. monitor connected, login to admin acct, go to "Start" menu>Control Panels>Printers and Other Hardware>NVIDIA Control Panel. Expand the Display folder on the left side and select "Set up multiple displays", then select the "Use only one display" radio button and make sure your laptop display is entered in the "Select the display you would like to use." box. Approve the changes and now it should restart without the ext. monitor connected.

  • T60 and Kingston SSD not working

Hi guys, I have small project at wok. We are upgrading our T60 hard drives with Kingston SSDs and I have to find a way of cloning and make them work together. Just so you know the T60 HDs are encrypted if that's goanna make any difference.
So far I have tried couple of cloning programs ( Clonzilla and the Kingston cloning software that came with the SSD) and couple of ways to clone. I followed all the steps from http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/Intel-X25-M-Solid-State-Drive-SSD-won-t-... and still no success. When I plugged in the SSD in to the lap top and start it I`m getting a message "Hit any key to continue..." and from there I can not do anything. This message comes up on the screen where you can see in the left top corner " [F2] to cancel autologon".
Does anyone have an idea what I have to do to make it work?
    Thanks is advance

Firstly, I have to question the logic in what your doing. You say these are "work" computers, and since you have the harddrives encrypted, I assume they contain valuable data.
Did you know that SSD drives fail about 2-3 times as often as mechnical drives, and these failures usually leave no way to slavage data. I can't imagine a reason to use them on a business computer. Currently the only advantage to an SSD is speed, so if speed is of foremost importance, and data security isn't important (such as in a gaming PC), then I'd say go with SSD, but if you want something reliable, then SSD technology just isn't there yet. Also note that most mechnical harddrive fialure with be possible to slavage data from, where an SSD failure would usually be impossible (think of trying to repair a lightbulb compared to repairing a candle).
    Getting back to your question...
I'd definitely disable the encryption and try it again, also make sure you have the new ssd drive in the main drive pay when you clone the drive. Put the old drive in an ultrabay adapter or usb enclosure.
    Good luck

  • Negotiated Link Speed on MacBook Pro mid-2009 with Kingston SSDNow v300

    Hi,
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (13") with Kingston SSDNow v300 SSD drive with Mavericks OS X installed.
I've noticed from different forums that many users have the same problem that I have: SSD drive's Negotiated Link Speed is only 1,5 Gbps, although MacBook Pro mid-2009 should support 3 Gbps speed.
My system has EFI 1.7 firmware update (MBP55.00AC.B03) installed in and System Info says that 3 Gbps Link Speed should be possible:
    NVidia MCP79 AHCI:
      Vendor:    NVidia
      Product:    MCP79 AHCI
      Link Speed:    3 Gigabit
      Negotiated Link Speed:    1.5 Gigabit
      Physical Interconnect:    SATA
      Description:    AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
Many users have tried to reset NVRAM and SMC and I have also done these steps, but with not any improvement.
Some users have mentioned that MacBook Pro mid-2009 has a poor SATA ACHI chipset (NVidia MCP79) and SATA III SSD drives won't work on SATA II speed unless SSD drive is forced to work on SATA II speed by firmware update or by some tweaking tool. Is there this kind of tool available for Kingston SSDNow v300?
One user says that he got 3 Gbps Negotiated Link Speed on Mountain Lion, but after installing Mavericks, speed dropped to 1,5 Gbps (https://discussions.apple.com/message/23549859#23549859).
So, is there any way to get Negotiated Link Speed to work on 3 Gbps on Kingston SSDNow v300 with MacBook Pro mid-2009 (for example by installing an older version of Mac OS X) or do I have to buy a new SSD drive from another manufacturer to get 3 Gbps Negotiated Link Speed to work on my machine?
If the last option (to buy a new SSD drive) is the only option, would it be wise to look for an older model, a SATA II drive, (maybe OCZ Vertex 2) to get 3 Gbps speed?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I was just as frustated as you after installing the Kingston v300.  I mean it's a solidly built drive with the reliability of kingston (I've been using their RAM for years and years in my desktop PC without problems).  Unfortunately, for a the last 3 months I had it in my 2009 unibody white macbook, it was stuck at link speed 1.5.
I've been searching in forums since then without any solution.  Even the update for bios is not available for my model.
I just tried the SMC reset after reading the blog.
    http://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2010/12/04/how-when-why-to-reset-the-pram-smc-on -your-mac/#!w3XEY
On reboot, everything seemed faster, so I checked the negotiated link speed and it was at 3 instead of 1.5!  Yay!  Then I checked the disk transfer speed on Blackmagic Disk speed test and it roughly doubled from 138 to 260MB/s.  Now, I'm not going to shutdown or restart...
I hope this post is useful for people like me stuck at 1.5 Gbps speed.  Good luck

  • MacBook Pro mid 2009 HDD to a Kingston SSD SATA drive - Problems

    Hi
I own a MacBook Pro Mid 2009 and I'm running OSX Mavericks with Windows 8.1 Pro Bootcamp.  I wanted to upgrade to an SSD drive and after reading the great reviews on Amazon, I purchased a Kingston 240GB SSD 2.5" V300 SATA 3.
Many of the buyers had installed the SSD drive on Macbook Pro, including "mid 2009' models without any real problems but I've just spent the best part of 3 hours trying to install the drive but so far, it has not worked and the problem seems to be that, although the Acronis True Image software that comes with the drive to 'clone' the source drive and install it onto the destination drive (new SSD drive), I get a message which states, "WARNING:  After migration, the O/S will not be able to boot from the destination disk in the BIOS - If you want to boot from the destination disk after migration, you need to enable UEFI booting in your system and then restart".
During one of my first attempts to install the SSD drive, I removed the original HDD from the MBP and installed it in the supplied 2.5" caddy and and connected it to the MBP via the USB cable supplied then installed the new Kingston SSD SATA3 drive in the MBP, powered up and then rebooted.  The Acronis bootable software launched and after choosing 'clone disk', cose source and destination drives, I got a message saying:  "The selected disk will be migrated as is (disks layout will remain GPT)".  "After operation completion, operating systems will not boot from the destination disk in the BIOS".
My system has the latest available Boot ROM Version (MBP.00AC.B03 and the SMC Version is 1.47f2 and as far as I am aware, Apple computers have no BIOS that you can access like on Windows computers and instead use EFI instead.
Both drives had Extended Journaled GUID Partitions on them and what baffles me is that other buyers of these Kingston SSD SATA3 drives appear to have managed to install the SSD drive, but I've had to give up.
I would really like to get the SSD drive working but so far I've failed.  Any advice would be appreciated and I'll try it out before reluctantly returning the drive for refund.

    Hi
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes the Acronis software is Windows but I read through a lot of reviews on the Kingston SSD SATA 3 drives Amazon and from what I can gather, after removing the original drives and installing that in the 2.5" caddy and then installing the new SD drive in the Macbook, those buyers then used the software to boot from and clone the source drive to the new drive.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it in my first post, but I did use the Disk Utility in Mac OSX and erased, formatted and partitioned the drive and then pushed CMD + R at start up but I was not able to install a copy of the OS because the drive was not recognised.
I think I also used the disk utility in Windows and then tried again in OSX but no luck.  I'm no expert but as stated above, the issue seems to be that the SSD drive is not booable in the BIOS (or Mac equivalent).
The SSD drive is SATA 3 and I'm sure that the SATA ports are SATA 1 on my MBP and maybe that the problem Perhaps someone can confirm this.

  • T410 will not boot with new SSD

I've cloned my HDD to a new SSD, but it will not boot.  It goes into a Lenovo Think Bios splash screen / Black screen loop.  I booted off a repair disk and performed a repair, but it is still doing the bios loop thing.  This has happened with both an OCZ and a Kingston SSD.  Any ideas? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm going to venture a guess that the drive was not cloned properly.
The "new" drive must be in the machine's HDD bay, and the "old" one in the USB enclosure.
I always use Clonezilla for the rare occasions that I actually clone something, but Acronis should do just fine as well.
    Good luck.
    Cheers,

  • Two Kingston SSD dead on Satellite L850-1PD

I replaced my mechanic hard drive with a Kingston SSD and after two months the drive just stopped working. I got my money back and bought another Kingston SSD on another supplier. After another couple of months the new drive stopped working again. I'm on the process of replacing it with a new one however, at this point, I believe that there is something wrong with the laptop causing the hard drives to fail.
If more details are needed, I can provide them.
    Thank you.

I dont think that the issue could be related to the notebook.
Why should notebook break the SSD drives and how?
I mean the SSD drive is connected to the SATA controller and thats it!
What you should do is check and modify some system settings
You could disable the scheduled disk defragmentation
Disk defragmentation is only useful for common spinning HDD that have moving parts but not for SSD drive!
You should also disable indexing. Indexing is a Windows service that is designed to speed up Windows search. The indexing service automatically keeps track of the files which makes files searching faster.
But the point is that Windows indexing performs numerous small write operations and this might decrease the SSD working life.
Last but not least make sure TRIM support is enabled and you could disable, move or reduce the page file

  • Kingston SSD is destroyed by T60p (2100 initialization error)

It is a very well known error when you try to upgrade the thinkpad harddisk to SSD.
The SSD I bought is Kingston SSDNow V100 Series SV100S2N/64GZ 2.5" 64GB which is this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139421
My thinkpad is T60p 2007CTO. After using this SSD for 1 month without any problem, I got the error message when I reboot the system "2100: hdd0 initialization error (1)".
My system is Windows 7 professional.
This error for me, triggered by plugging the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay with a Seagate Momentus 500G internal hard drive.
Before that, I have used the Thinkpad IDE Hard Drive Bay for a long time.
I am not sure who actually trigered the problem. Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay or Seagate Momentus 500G hard drive ?
I tried to upgrade BIOS without success. I also tried to put this SSD into external USB driver and plug it under Windows 7, Windows XP and Linux. Linux can see the partitions but cannot format or mount them. I cannot see this SSD disk using Windows disk manager. Sometimes Ican see the disk in Windows Explorer, but still cannot read the data in it.
I have read a lot of posts before I ask for help. Now, what I ONLY want to do is saving my SSD hard driver.
Any suggestion or solution would be very appreciate.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
I have been using the previous model (64GB Kingston V+) in an X100e with no apparently ill effects for a little over half a year now.  Obiviously, different models, but I wonder if the problem is due to some failure of the SSD.  I had another brand of SSD which completely failed after having more and more timeouts after about ten hours of use, so it does seem there are some new failure modes to SSDs that we may not see with conventional rotating media type hard disk drives.
Have you checked with Kingston?  They may have some specific tools or recommendations for accessing data on the disk.

  • Macbook Pro 96gb kingston SSD + 1TB WD Scorpion Blue: Harddrive Issues

    Hi,
I would like to ask to following thing:
I installed the 96gb kingston SSD & the 1tb WD Scorpion Blue in my macbook pro (Mid-2008 model).
I use the 1tb as storage drive so my data gets moved to this drive. Now the following thing is happening:
When I try to play a file in itunes (.m4a audio file for example) the file gets loaded but suddenly stops playing. Same when I move large amounts of data to the hard drive it suddenly stops, the beachball pops up wait 10/15seconds and then continues.
Is there a way this can be fixed or is this a drive error? Should I check it with drive genius?
I don't have them installed in any raid or something like that. I just plugged them in and installed Leopard 10.6.7.
    Greetings,
    Maxime

I have to add that both drives are formatted with Journaled HFS+

  • Kingston SSD Drive Carrier / Bracket - Agility 4

hi everyone! this is my first post ever (excuse me in advance for its lengthiness)
this morning i went to a store to pick up my ocz agility 4 and a kingston SSD driver carrier (see below).
15 mins later: my computer would't see the new ssd
after a detour to another shop i knew that neither the kingston bracket nor my ssd were malfunctioning. the problem was (i quote freely): "the kingston bracket runs perfectly with a number of ssds and a vertex 3 (which the they tested on the spot), but not with the agility 4. controller wha wha incompatible wha.  sorry."
back home i was frustrated and started fiddling around with the bracket. in the end i had the idea that the same tray that should connect the ssd with the interface in the bracket while you close that hatch could be the problem. so i bent some metal parts (the vertical one whose narrow top side you can see closest to the interface and one more you can't see) and then it worked.  while this tray where you can put the ssd into is the right size it apparently is not putting all types of ssds into place, i.e. making a connection to the interface. (looots of general questions here...)
im pretty happy that it works now (very good in fact!!!).
but still - not being overly paranoid nor too much into this stuff - this does not seem to be a good (good as in: foot + shoe = (aaah) fits or car + gasoline = driving) solution.
    here's my questions:
    1) is there an alternative to this kingston bracket for a mac pro?
    2) is there an altogether different way to get my ssd into place?
    3) could there be a problem because of not perfectly  locked into place connection? (system runs... i don't see sparks   interface damage etc?)
    looking forward to some posts!

ordered the piece you suggested - works very well. installation is easy thanks to the simple and very smart design.
some extra info: the bracket as seen above does not support the ocz agility 4 without tinkering with it. as i was told this holds true for all samsung ssds as well. the ocz vertex 3 however - for whatever reason - does work perfectly.
the problem is apparently that some ssds (agility 4, samsung models) do not lock properly into the internal interface of the kingston bracket. at first i was led to believe it is some firmware problem (so i was told twice).
thanks a lot for your tip, so far i ordered several other parts on owc.
im trying to figure out how to give you your ten points now

  • Have 17 in MB Pro 8GB, I7 processor. My 500 GB HDD is running out of space, want to replace it with a SSD 1 TB, Can I do it, and what drive should I use?

Computer is prob. 5 yrs old, still runs great, works well with Yosemite, just HDD if full, tried cleaning it up, but only get about 8 GB left. Want to change out for a SSD 1 TB or 960 , leaning toward Crucial drive, can I do this and replace my old drive. Do not really want to give up my DVD slot to a HDD, would rather just replace the current Hard drive with a SSD? Any thoughts, can I do this myself. I have computer connected to time capsule and could use that to reinstall onto new SSD??

Yes. Any 2.5" notebook sized SSD can be used. If your Time Capsule has a full system backup, then you can restore from it. You could put your old HDD into an external enclosure and boot from it. Then clone the HDD to the newly install SSD after formatting it.

  • I got a mid 2011 macbook air 13 with 128gb ssd is it possible to upgrade my storage?

i got a mid 2011 macbook air 13 with 128gb ssd is it possible to upgrade my storage?

It is entirely possible, as many have known from day one (as ifixit's first teardown revealed). Unlike the unupgradeable memory, the SSD is a discrete expansion card that is removeable with just one screw, after removing the case cover. It is however debateable as to whether such an expansion is worth the possible risk of making demonstrable changes to the MBA whilst still under warranty. So you may want to stave off consideration for a while.
I made the upgrade recently on my older 2010 MBA, and it was easier than upgrading the HDD on my old MacBook Pro.
Here OWC/Mac Sales has kits and instruction videos.

  • Is getting a MacBook Pro with an SSD the same as getting a MacBook Air with Flash?

Im gonna be getting my first macbook soon, and i'm trying to decide which to get. First off, I'm waiting for the new MBA's to come out to see what they come with, and the new processors. But I was wondering if i were to get the base 13" MBP with the SSD, would that be practically the same machine as the Base 13" MBA (the new ones with SB processors when they come out) with 4gb ram (if they don't come with it already) ?? I really like the idea of having that type of storage. And what will be the difference in the processors?  Also, does anybody have any thoughts on if the new MBA's will have a standard 4gb ram instead of 2??

If they also have the same storage drive, operating system, graphics and everything else, both freshly installed with OS X, the non-Retina would be faster because it's rendering less pixels to the monitor, which increases the graphics speed overall.
However your likely to not notice the difference too much, unless you used both extensively using a 3D testing program or your frame rates on your 3D game.
Determine your Mac's ability for 3D games
I honestly can't tell too much between my non-Retina and my friends Retina display.
He wished he had the ability to upgrade his storage drive and memory like I can with my non-Retina, also to have a cd drive.
