Xauth unknown command, WINE crashing X after recent upgrade

I realize this isn't much information to go on.  What I'm looking for is some advice on how to proceed debugging this.  Where should I look next?
When I run startx, I get
xauth: (stdin):2: unknown command "ef33d0225485e7060dffee1ecb847468"
It seems to load normally afterwards.  Everything seems to be fine, until I run a game in WINE.  At that point, the mouse cursor disappears entirely (both in and out of the WINE window) and X eventually freezes.  This does not happen every time, which makes this whole thing very frustrating.
I'm using a NVIDIA card with proprietary drivers (updated with pacman).  Everything is up to date, the nvidia module is loaded in the kernel, and nouveau isn't installed.
WINE does not output anything useful even with a 2>&1 |tee log.  The Xorg.0.log doesn't show any errors, save this:
(II) NVIDIA(0): ACPI: failed to connect to the ACPI event daemon; the daemon
(II) NVIDIA(0): may not be running or the "AcpidSocketPath" X
(II) NVIDIA(0): configuration option may not be set correctly. When the
(II) NVIDIA(0): ACPI event daemon is available, the NVIDIA X driver will

I take the second part back.  The issue with X crashing with WINE still occurs intermittently.
I'm noticing that .Xauthority is being given 2-3 entries shortly after login, often the same one twice.  Is this normal?
Also, I went through errors.log and found some seemingly relevant lines.  This one is throughout (along with a similar one with 16 instead of 56):
kernel: [ 626.673586] NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 56, CMDre 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000001 00000001
This is everywhere as well:
/usr/sbin/crond[875]: (CRON) INFO (Syslog will be used instead of sendmail.): No such file or directory
And then there is this:
udevd[282]: can not find '/lib/udev/rules.d/50-firmware.rules': No such file or directory
udevd[282]: can not find '/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules': No such file or directory

I know that the first error is related to nvidia, though I've been having trouble figuring out exactly what it means.  The second error seems irrelevant but I could be wrong.  The third concerns me, whether or not it's related to my problem with X.

  • OS X v.10.4.11 incredibly sluggish, crashing often after recent upgrades.

About two months ago I upgraded my +15" Powerbook G4+'s stock-RAM from the factory issue 500-something KB card by swapping it out for *2GB of Kingston DDR2 SD RAM*. It was a quick, by the book swap. And almost immediately the computer was faster, less bogged down for usable memory, and could handle multiple applications with greater ease.
BUT after a week or so I began getting this crash message (link is safe, just a screencap of error message): *http://i40.tinypic.com/sq175j.jpg*. +The computer would freeze and demand to be manually shut down and restarted+. Once it was turned back on, the computer would display a "Report Error Message" saying that OS X had unexpectedly crashed.
My computer went out of warranty back in December, so I'm trying to troubleshoot this on my own. I'm not sure if the crashing is increasing in frequency or not, it certainly doesn't follow any recognizable pattern as far as when it crashes (as far as how many programs I'm running or how many processes I'm operating with). Usually I'm only using 30% of RAM, but the computer sounds likes it's working at 85-95%, getting incredibly hot and beginning to slow - then crashing.
I've considered moving all of my files to my external HD and reinstalling OS X 4.11, I've also considered saving some $ and upgrading to 10.5.6 (Leopard). If anyone has any experience with this issue or something like it, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi Northwarda, and a warm welcome to the forums!
First question, how much free space do you have on your Hard Drive?
Second, Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Thirdly...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

What I suggest you do here is to use Adobe's uninstaller tool to uninstall Flash first of all: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Then reboot, go to http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ and reinstall it.
I notice too that you have an outdated version of Shockwave For Director. You can update that via http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

Since it is affecting all your devices also, try going to the e-mail web site and seeing if you can log in there. Who is the e-mail provider?
Try deleting the pass word from Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.
If that doesn't work, try deleting and adding back the e-mail account.

After recent upgrade to Yosemite on Macbook air bluetooth audio cuts out and associated video stops with audio. Likewise with airplay and Apple TV. I have deleted all my saved wifi connections and restarted numerous times. I do not expect a resolution from the community, but hope to get the attention of Apple engineers. If you are having same problems or have a miracle cure I am all ears.

May start my own thread, but I'm having similar issues.
I've been using an old iMac (running 10.7.5) and Apple TV for years with no issues. Last week I bought a new Macbook Pro running Yosemite and have had audio issues multiple times. The weird thing is that sometimes it works flawlessly, other times (like now) I spend half an hour just trying to get a song to play.
My issues are: When I got to "computers" in Apple TV to stream my music, my music is sometimes chopper or intermittent, and I seen to know when it's going to happen based on the status wheel just before it plays. When I choose a song, the status wheel will spin for an unusually long time, usually an indicator that the audio is either not going to work, or stutter.
When it does finally pull up a song, the playhead sits at the beginning of the song for a good 3-5 seconds before actually playing. Then, when it starts playing, it's all downhill. It will play a few seconds, drop out, play a few more seconds, drop out, and then ultimately the playhead will keep moving across the song as if it's playing, but there's no audio.
Again, this is a new phenomenon never experienced by me. I've tried everything I could think of, some of them all at once:
    • restart Apple TV
    • restart Macbook Pro
    • quite iTunes/open
    • turn off Home Sharing on iTunes then reconnect it
    • unplugging and cycling both my modem and router
None of these have alleviated the problem.
The odd thing is, like this morning, the audio started up perfectly and never gave me any issues. It wasn't until later in the day that it started. Perhaps after the macbook pro had been put to sleep? Not sure.
Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

    Hello there, Kishoresaraogi.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great steps to troubleshoot your issue:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Particularly:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

after recent upgrade i lost the contacts icon on the screen

Before doing a Reset (which will wipe out a whole lot of things that you have to reenter) check to make sure the Contacts app didn't simply get pushed to another page by the addition of the Newstand app to the first homescreen.

  • Lost all sounds except ringtone after recent upgrade

No sound except ringtone after recent upgrade followed by the upgrade fix. Since the ringtone was only affected I didn't notice immediately! If I plug in my headphones everything works. Unable to use volume buttons on side unless headphones are plugged in, the volume symbol with white dots doesn't even appear anymore. The volume control in  itunes music only works when plugged into headphones otherwise it can't be adjusted. Worked with apple support tried everything include a restore to new still no go! It appears that a few people are having the same problem and seems weird that it  happened after last upgrade!

If you are unable to adjust the volume without headphones even after restoring, then the iPhone thinks it's plugged into a dock or cable.  This is the behavor that will happen if you plug your iPhone in to the car or iHome dock to play you music and sounds, but a docked connection will never play ringtones through the dock connection and headphones override that dock connection which is why your headphones work.
How does the phone think its connected to a dock?  Well, this can happen if the charging port gets wet at some point or if some trauma happens in there like pushing the cable in when it doesnt fit, etc.
So it happens even after restoring what do I do?  Service your iPhone. https://selfsolve.apple.com

  • Playback crashes PP after hardware upgrade

I recently upgraded my editing system to the following:
I7 980 hexcore on an ASUS p6x58-e pro motherboard (from 920 quad core on ASUS P6T)
    24G memory (Corsair Vengence)
    EVGA GTX560 video card
Existing power supply is Corsair 750W
    I'm running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
I had Premire Pro 5.5.2 up and running on the old configuration without any problems, but when I run it with the new configuration and try to play or scrub through a timeline, the screens blank and the computer reboots. (No error message). It doesn't seem to matter whether the project is new or old (existing) or what the quality of the source video is. I have tried working in several other pieces of software on the machine and they all seem to work perfectly.
I have the latest BIOS for the motherboard, the most updated driver for the video card, and I deactivated/unistalled the entire Adobe suite, ran Creative Suit Cleaner, then reinstalled and udated. Still crashes.
    Any ideas?

My system was very stable with a few bugs then I updated from 5.5.1 to 5.5.2. My system started crasing.  Crashing hard!  Adobe's cleaner tool is pathetic, it only cleans the registry and barely cleans anything else. My very good friends at Adobe tech support did not have a clue.  I turned to other experts.  Here's a fix that I've used when my update from CS4 to CS5.5 blew up. I just used it again and now my system is still sick but has most of the funtionality. This was written for CS5 so adjust it to 5.5.  I also used the CCleaner tool a free download, just Google it.
Where to delete temp, cache files and Adobe CS5 preference folders:
    •           Go to C:\Users\%username%\App data\Roaming\Adobe and delete the folders: Adobe Media Encoder, PProHeadless (if exists) Premiere Pro and PremierePro.
    •           Go to C:\Users\%username%\App data\Roaming\Adobe\Common\ and delete the folders: Media Cache and Media Cache Files. You may have selected a specific location for these folders to be saved through Premiere's Edit > Preferences > Media. Please note down this location and delete the respective Media Cache folders.
    •           Open Premiere. Go to Premiere’s Edit > Preferences > Media,  and under Media Cache Database click the Clean button. Close Premiere after this.
    •           Go to C:\Users\%username%\My Documents\Adobe\ and delete the folders Adobe Media Encoder and Premiere Pro. Note: Make sure no project files or footage is located in these folders.
    •           Delete any of the mtxTemp folders for your projects, usually found in your ...Adobe Premiere Pro Preview Files\mtxTemp folder of your project scratch disk location.
    •           Go to C:\Windows\Temp and delete the contents of the Temp folder (not the Temp folder itself).
    •           Go into Registry Editor (Start > Run and type regedit) and delete each of the cache folders located in the 5.0 folder here (do NOT delete the 5.0 folder itself, only the folder contents in 5.0): HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Premiere Pro\5.0
I have the 560 card and Premiere funtions with the same problems without the update to the supported_cuda_card.txt file changed but has much better performance by adding the 560 to the list thus activating the Mercury engine.  I use the Matrox MX02 and they recommend not using 560 drivers newer than 280.26.
My system is having issues with the preview monitor not playing video from the bins.  I can use the perview if the clip is being played from the timeine. Doesn't matter if Mercury is on or off, same results.  Updated drivers, chipsets, software to W7 64bit level.  My Matrox is now as usefull as a brick crashing PP5.5 halfway through launching when the drivers are loaded.  Disconnect the MX02 it and PP5.5.2 works, well almost works. I've been waiting 2 days for Matrox advanced tech support to call back.  I'm guessing they might be overworked by many people with the same problem.
Another problem is when encoding to h.264 with Adobe Media Encoder, the AV synch is a few annoying frames off.
I've unloaded any software that's not nessacary.  Turned off automatic startups of programs that run in the background unloade and reloaded Production Premium. Still having the same problems.

  • SOLVED Breakage on Asus UX21A after recent upgrade

After a recent upgrade that brought the kernel to 3.9.2 a lot of things stopped working on my asus zenbook prime: most annoyingly all function keys. They seem like disabled. In xev they don't even produce any event.
This in turn breaks an easy interface to keyboard backlight, screen brightness and sound volume.
I downgraded the kernel to what I had before (3.8.8) and the function keys do work again.
Unfortunately I was unable to circumvent another bug introduced by the upgrade, namely that whenever the machine returns from a blanked out screen, screen backlight is set to max. That cannot possibly be the intended behavior. I get this with journalctl:
    archlinux pkexec[1939]:: Executing command [USER=root] [TTY=unknown] [CWD=/] [COMMAND=/usr/bin/xfpm-power-backlight-helper --set-brightness 10]
This is annoying because you have to readjust backlight every time manually.
Can anyone shed some light on this? What parts of the kernel do control this? Or what triggered the modified behavior?
    Thanks.

    ewaller, thanks for your reply!
I did a pacman -Qo on the xfpm-power-backlight-helper program an it turns out to be part of xfpm-power-backlight-helper!
So in turn I downgraded to its previous version, an indeed the problem with max'ing screen backlight disappeared. Of course this is no real solution. I was hoping that xfpm-power-backlight-helper ws a script, so I could see what it does, but it is a compiled program.
I'm going to upgrade to the recent version of the kernel in order to see, as you suggested, more journalctl output, but as far as I remember it was non-descript.
By the way: I'm new to arch, as this little ultrabook is the first machine where I did not install Gentoo; what is the easiest method to switch kernels in arch?
Wrt to the function key problem: It seems that a lot of people having issues with that as the new kernel would not display certain files in the sys filesystem used to manipulate these settings. Unfortunately, I have no solution for that.
    thanks

  • Time Machine Backups after recent upgrade to Mountain Lion

Basically to keep a long story short - i need to take my computer in for repair tomorrow. I recently did an upgrade to Mountain Lion a day or two ago. I haven't done a Time Machine backup until today (a couple days after i upgraded to Mountain Lion) because i wanted to make sure that my previous TM backup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) was the most up to date and best update that i could revert back to if i had any issues with Mountain Lion, or any application compatibility, etc etc.
I don't have any broken applications and it seems like Mountain Lion is running better than Snow Leopard. However, as i said - i'm taking my computer in for repair tomorrow, i would like to know that i have the most up to date Time Machine backup with the new Mountain Lion so that when i restore it back from my Time Machine backup after i get it back from repair, i won't have any issues with the migration, which could potentially lead me into more technicalities.
I have a 500GB Harddrive, with about 70GB left of free space....I did the initial backup prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, and it upgraded 400+GB of info, now, since Mountain Lion - the first backup with Mountain Lion initially said 46GB - then it went down to 14GB by the time it was all said and done....so what exactly did it back up?
Did it back up all the necessary files to keep Mountain Lion running smoothly when i restore it back to the way it was after i get it back? Did it not back everything up that it needs to? Is it safe to erase my internal drive and do a clean installation so i can take it in, and not worry about not being able to migrate things back over or applications not working correctly?
When i get it back, i presume it will come with Mountain Lion back on it and i can just boot up into the Recovery Disk and restore it from a Time Machine backup that way, correct?
    Thanks for the help.
    - Jason

I received the same error and experienced the same issue that you have described but after performing a Time Capsule soft reset and then toggling the TM Off and then back On I was able issue a backup now and see my previous backups.
Here is the link to where I posted my fix; https://discussions.apple.com/message/19069543#19069543. Someone else had success using a different method. The only comment / complaint that I have since the ML OS X upgrade is that TM now takes at least 20 to 30 seconds before I can click/select a backup.
    I hope this helps.

  • Wifi state not remembered across reboot after recent upgrade

After a recent upgrade, I noticed that the wireless network is always on after the computer boots (I use NetworkManager in gnome, which I always use to turn the wireless off). Before that, the wireless is on only if I left it on before I shutdown the computer last time.

Regardless, this is an annoying trait, one that's new to me and my system (as stated, worked flawlessly until my new purchase), and is 100% limited to either a) the macbook pro b) Yosemite or c) both of them.

We recently upgraded Crystal and now the texty file output from a generic text printer has losst its formatting.
    The text appears like this:
      S
      u
      m
      m
      a
      r
      y
There si an OD character after each letter.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

    Hi Mike,
That is odd.... What happens if you check on the No Default Printer, save the report and then check it off, or the other way depending on what your original setting is?
If you create a new report do you see the same results?
Also, XI is no longer patchable but you can upgrade to XI R2 for free. Go to this link: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc and download the trial version of CR XI R2 and use your XI keycode, then apply the patches which you can get to by clicking on the BusinessObjects tab above, then Downloads.
Direct link to the Trial version: http://www.sap.com/solutions/sapbusinessobjects/sme/freetrials/index.epx
To enable the full XI R2 features locate the Keycode link and get a new one for XI R2.
    Thank you
    Don

    Thanks

Before doing a Reset (which will wipe out a whole lot of things that you have to reenter) check to make sure the Contacts app didn't simply get pushed to another page by the addition of the Newstand app to the first homescreen.
