Xcode documentation

Hi All, I'm using Xcode 4.3.1 now as I had to upgrade to work with Lion and have noticed that the documentation is not updated along with the software, or at least I can't find it. I'm tryingto follow tutorials from version 3.2 which are a nightmare to implement on 4.3. Any chance you could update some tutorials to work with the latest version of xcode. I'm particularly interested in the use of mediaplayer and the QTKit framework.
cheers

  • Failed to download xcode documentation

    Hi,
I have a developer subscription and have always been able to use the xcode documentation in the past. However, when I downloaded and installed the iphone 3.0 software and attempted to 'subscribe' to the iphone 3.0 Doc Set, it fails.
    It says:
Failed to download documentation package for iPhone OS 3.0 Library.
Access denied for download. Check that your account name and password (possibly stored in your keychain) are correct and still valid for the server.
Do I need to generate a new certificate or something?

Yes, thanks, one of those posts did the trick. For my particular case deleting the 'connect.apple.com' key prompted me for a new password and now it works.

  • Understanding Xcode Documentation Reference Library

I'm trying to understand the API documentation that comes with Xcode (Help->Documentation).
I'd like to look at OpenGL ES API documentation. So, I downloaded "Developer Tools Library" under the "Apple Xcode 3.1" Doc Set. When browsing, it's not clear where to locate the API doc information. Instead, I closed the browse mode and search for an OpenGL function: glMatrixMode. The function shows up in the top documentation window (with the following headings: Symbol Name, Class, Language, Type, Documentation Set). Click on the function name, however, does not give me additional information on that function. What's the point of having just the function name in the documentation if it's not documented?
Is there something else I need to download to get full OpenGl ES documentation?

I think the Developer Documentation just documents Apple's extensions and interfaces. You can get documentation for OpenGL itself from the source: http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/

  • Stop XCode documentation download.

Every time I launch XCode, XCode begins to download tons of documentation. How do I get XCode to stop downloading documentation, in order to prevent overuse of download bandwidth?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello navigantium
Open the preferences panel of Xcode and navigate at the extreme right. There is the documentation settings panel where you can uncheck the "Check for and install updates automatically"

  • XCode Documentation Error

In the Welcome to Xcode window there is a link called "Create a new Xcode project."
This opens a window that contains a link to "The Xcode Workflow Tutorial"
Opening that gives a line by line description of how to create a simple application in Xcode. But with at least 1 mistake
Ignoring the statement that you need to open Xcode. Xcode has to be open already if you are reading these instructions.
    Now the big error
Under the title "Creating a Custom View Class" the instructions tell you how to Choose a template for the file you are creating. The display is very different from what Xcode presents and the template the instructions say should be used, "Objective-C NSView subclass template", does mot exist in my copy of Xcode. The display in the tutorial has 6 templates you should be able to choose from and Xcode, on my computer at least, has only 4.
Which of these 4 should I choose, "Objective-C class", Objective-C protocol", Objective-C test case class" or "AppleScript class"?

  • No Tools in new project window for xcode

    Hi
Can anyone please help? I have recently started to learn C language and currently reading a book that advices using xcode, this has been downloaded with no problems from the original disk. In the back of the book it advices opening a new project where by the assistant window pops up with various languages and more and to select "tools", this should be located at the bottom of the menu list underneath "static library" but it's not there. I have inserted the disk and installed xcode tools.mpkg, I have also searched on Google and it mentioned about installing x11 SDK so that it shows in the default menu I have also done this yet it still does not appear? I cannot get tools within the new project menu and I'm getting quite frustrated as I do not know what I am now doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can start to understand and explore C. Many thanks for reading!

Xcode's interface has changed from release to release. It sounds like the book may be referring to an older version of Xcode where the location of that template project was different.
I assume that the following would probably be what you're looking for:
    Hope this helps....
P.S. Two really quick tips. If you're viewing a source code file and you see a function, method, or constant and you'd like to see where it's defined, hold down Command-Option and then double-click on the word as if you were going to select it. If possible, this will open the header or source file where that item is defined. (If there's more than one possibility, it'll show a popup menu of choices first).
The other tip is very similar. If you'd like to see Xcode documentation for a function, method, or constant (like in the first tip), hold down Option (rather than Command-Option) and double-click on the word as if you were going to select it. This will automatically open the Xcode help window and issue a search for that item.

  • Java templates gone from XCode for 10.6

I went back to rework some Java applets I have written and discovered they don't compile anymore in Xcode (at least as before)
Hmm. I had Java templates, downloaded the latest XCode and the templates are gone. My 'old' applets won't compile complaining 'Jam is deprecated and has been removed; targets that use Jam must be upgraded to native targets. For more information on doing this, consult the Xcode documentation.'
I found a separate Java SDK download? From
    http://developer.apple.com/java/download/
    has 10.5 version listed only
Clicking on the link goes to the (old) log-in page for the Developer program and the download/Java link goes to a page with 10.6 Java downloads - Developer previews.
Still no Java templates (in Xcode). Maybe I should read the documentation (if I can find where it was installed). I was able to 'compile' the Hello World applets in the organizer window but no 'Hello World' in Safari.
What's happened to the 'old' system for Java development?

After installing XCode 3.2.1 there were no Java docs or Java templates. I installed the Java files and docs for 10.6 from the developer site. Searching XCode for Java gives a lot of Javascript items but no easy answers for Java. Using the Organizer window instead of the Xcode project window is a big change. I must have missed it but searching this forum, Xcode and now the java-dev mailing list archive hasn't given me good answers. One answer seems to be to put Mac OS X10.5 on a separate volume, install the older XCode (or current??) and develop Java one OS version back.
The Hello World applet didn't run for me when I tried it. Blank browser window. Java Preferences seem to default for 10.6
"Create Java projects in Xcode 3.2 using Xcode's Organizer. Choose Window > Organizer to open the Organizer. Click the + button at the bottom of the Organizer. Choose New From Template > Java Templates." > Java Applets. Build
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL
    Total time: 1 second
The Debugger has exited with status 0.
gives a new window in Safari but it is empty.

  • XCode creating complex .app folder?

Please bear with me here. I'm new to OSX and my C++ skills are really rusty.
I've created a simple command-line application using XCode. It's a Carbon C++ application. When I build my project, it creates a lot of stuff in this complicated .app folder structure. Do I really need all that or can I just grab MyApp and remove it, ignoring the .nib files and .strings files and the .lproj file, etc.
For instance, when I list the folder contents:
    *My-Mac:MyApp.app sneakyimp$ ls -Rl*
    *total 0*
    *drwxr-xr-x 6 sneakyimp admin 204 Apr 12 13:29 Contents*

    *total 24*
    *-rw-r--r-- 1 sneakyimp admin 11033 Apr 12 13:29 objects.xib*
What is the reason for all the other stuff?

    sneakyimp wrote:
I'm not sure what you mean by "C++ skills are not what you need".
Some people just get hung up on the C++ language. That is a very specific language that is very rarely used on Macs any more. It isn't used anywhere much any more. If you want to build applications, you may need to know about the C language, compilers, linkers, environments, and OS runtimes.
To get things working I did a bit of googling because I wasn't really sure what 'missing symbol' errors meant. I now understand it means that you have referred to some object which has not been defined by a library or in your own code.
It sounds like you are getting the hang of it.
I found a post explaining the exact error I was having which described how to search for the right file to include using spotlight and also a step to add the CoreServices framework code to my project.
You probably don't need spotlight for this stuff.
What I still need to come to grips with is the mind-boggling array of different libraries available to XCode and how I should go about finding the right library to include for a given function. For instance, how did you know that MPProcessors lives in CoreServices? Is that just from experience or is there some kind of search technique I can learn? I googled MProcessors hoping that I might find some library documentation or something (which I did not).
I looked up MPProcessors in the Xcode documentation. Click API and All Document Sets. Then start typing in the search field. When you see the function you want, click on it. The main window will show details about the function. Scroll to the top of that window and you can see what library you need to link with next to "Framework". That is what I did.
I also am wrestling with the fact that the Project tree need not have any real relation to the include statements I write. I.e., my project has a suitcase-looking folder labeled CoreServices.framework which contains two folders, Headers and Frameworks. The file CoreServices.h is in the Headers folder. But instead of including <CoreServices/Headers/CoreServices.h>, I include <CoreServices/CoreServices.h>.
Yes. Just don't worry about it. That is how "Frameworks" work.

  • Xcode and older Java projects

    Help!
Recently I've tried to re-run some older Java Xcode projects and have received this error message:
"Jam is deprecated and has been removed; targets that use Jam must be upgraded to native targets. For more information on doing this, consult the Xcode documentation."
I can get around the problem by copying the old code into a newly created project; however, when I tried to follow the instruction in the error message and consult the Xcode documentation, I could find no information on how to do this. I have tried searching the user docs for all of the terms in the above message with no useful results. Selecting "Upgrade all targets to native" from the Project menu produces a warning that this is not supported in Java.
I must be missing something really obvious. Can anybody tell me what is going on?
    Thanks, dcl

Thanks for the quick reply, Karl.
I should have mentioned that I'm pretty much a beginner with Xcode and Java (actually, with software in general). I get the impression that you don't think that Xcode is a very good way to develop Java. Why is that?
For my level of programming it works just fine (usually). If I start with a new project there is no problem; however, I can't go back and work on older projects because of the problem I mentioned in the original email.
Any clues as to what is going on?

  • I get a "No Editor" when I open a file on Xcode?

Hi gang, I'm new to the forum so my apologies if the question has already been asked.
I keep getting a No Editor every time I reopen my files in xcode? I've trolled online forums for
solutions but none seem to help.
    Thanks in advance.
    OsX 10.8.2 xcode 4.5.2 (4g2008a)

I'll throw out some ideas I've gleaned from the net - you've probably already tried them - I'm guessing here.
    1) Try pressing <Command><1> - Show Project Navigator
from this link xcode4 - Trying to open project in xCode 4 - Stack Overflow
I'm guessing that these are individual files that cause your problem and not the entire project?
Tell me the file extension of the affected files. Or does it happen for all files?
(You can tell I've never had this problem myself.)
Here's some info from the Xcode documentation:
"Xcode provides viewers to display some files for which it has no editor (some audio, video, and graphics files, for example). If you select a file for which Xcode does not have an editor or viewer, Xcode attempts to display the file using the same Quick Look facility used by the Finder."
What happens when you try to open one of these source files in the Finder?
    2) Try double-clicking on the file to launch an editor in a separate window.
    ...yet another piece of info...
"Note: Sometimes an editor pane may display the message “No Editor.” This means that there is no file selected in the detail view or the Groups & Files list."

  • Using XCode for Cross Developing (Target would be Linux x86)

I'm developing RealTime Software - running as RT-Kernel modules - written in C for Linux x86 (RTlinux on Kernel Version >2.4.32 or RTAI on Kernel Version 2.6.x).
At the moment I develop using ssh and vi on the target machine. This is NOT very comfortable.
After searching your forum I found:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2322911&#2322911
Fine Links to the XCode Documentation. But reading it I just found how to cross develop to MacOS X targets (x86 and PPC).
Can you please tell me, if it is possible to use XCode for cross development with target machines using Linux on x86?
    Thank you
    Johann

In theory, yes. In practice, no. You would need a version of GCC that supports targeting that architecture and all the header and library files for that architecture. It is highly unlikely to be worth the time and effort to try it and it may not even work even if you do everything right. Plus, you would still have to run and test on the target platform.
You'll just have to make life the best that you can on Linux. I suggest downloading the NEdit editor for X Windows. It is as good as any Mac editor and very easy to script for automation.

  • Xcode 4.1 - build using makefile

    Hi,
we have a team project in my school and because other students in my team dont have mac, we use makefile to build the source code. Since its complex C project we have several modules that we have to link together and its impossible to do so using xcode options. I found that for previous versions there was a way to build project using makefile, unfortunatelly all guides and even the one in latest xcode documentation are for xcode version 3.x and those options arent in 4.x version. Is there still some way how to build project using makefile?
    Thank you for answers,
    Vojtech Simetka

I am not sure what you mean by allocation guard, but you should be able to use Instruments with an external build system project. External build system projects are initially configured to not use the debugger. You must use the scheme editor to configure the project for debugging.
Choose Edit Scheme from the Scheme menu in the project window toolbar.
Select the Run action from the left side of the scheme editor.
Click the Info button at the top of the editor.
Choose an executable from the Executable menu. You may need to build the project first to generate the executable.
Choose a debugger from the Debugger menu.
I have not tried debugging an external build system project in Xcode 4 so you might have more work to do to be able to use Xcode's debugger.

  • Xcode hiccups

    Hi there,
    Two questions here...
    1. I have a document-based AppleScript app here, and I can't save it, even though there is a scroll view within it. Why not?
    2. I want to update the scroll view with the contents of the clipboard, why will this code not do it:
    on clicked theObject
set preferred type of pasteboard "general" to "string"
set myString to contents of pasteboard "general"
    log myString
set content of theObject to myString
    end clicked
    Thanks, Ricky

    Hi Ricky!
I don't know if I can be much help here but with your on clicked handler I don't think that theObject is referring to a scroll view?
set content of theObject to myString
theObject can only be something that's linked in IB to a on clicked handler. I could be wrong but I don't think scroll views are compatible with on clicked handlers. The answer lies in the Container View Suite in your Xcode documentation...I know it's not fun reading!

  • Apple Developer Documentation

Hello all, I have download the new Xcode Documentation Update and it offers me and option to index every Java symbol, explaining that take about 30 minutes.
Incredible! Why don't they create this index and distribute this index to users? Last time I aborted my installation because I thought that my system was froze.
Is there some kind of strangle rivalry at the Xcode group due to this new "feature": someone trying to explain it ineptitude.

Actually, I have heard that they are getting rid of the Cocoa-Java bridge. Any new features of Cocoa will not have Java equivalents.
Perhaps there may not be a lot of Xcode Java developers. Java developers seem to be standardizing on Eclipse with the SWT these days.
And by the way, that 30 minutes must mean one of those 2Ghz MacBook Pros. My old iBook G3 took 4 hours! I won't be clicking that option again.

  • Broken Xcode symbol popup

This has happened to me before, and I've fixed it, but I can't remember how, or find a solution online (yet). The symbol popup in the Xcode editor has stopped showing up. Does anyone know where I should look to fix this?

Ok, looks like I needed syntax coloring enabled, as the Xcode documentation states. Annoying.
