Xfce4-notifyd themes [solved]

I was wondering if anyone knew how to change the theme/look of notifyd, or at least a place to start looking. The most I could find was a faq saying it inheirits it's appearance from the current GTK theme, but that doesn't seem to be correct...
The default in xfce4.4 looked good, but the new one not so much.
They introduced an option to change the theme, but can't find a way to add more (or more to add...), and the defaults are no good (ZOMG-PONIES! is close, but not quite what I'd like ;] )
edit:
Finally, I was able to figure it out, turns out it's simply a gtkrc file under /usr/share/themes/(theme name)/xfce-notify-4.0
now to fool around with these settings to get something less ugly
edit edit: I feel stupid, the readme in the source states this... plus they suggest putting it under $HOME/.themes/THEMENAME/xfce4-notify-4.0 which makes a lot of sense.

No themes up to this time.
A side note regarding this detail.
I have a usb connected HDD with the latest arch kernel also having xfce4 installed.  It also has kde installed (all) but not in use.
This xfce4 install has oxygen icons installed in the mouse theme window and enables a large cursor with various icon shapes.  The cursor thusly enabled changes orientation as the cursor is placed in a forum listing, say, changes to horizontal vs. vertical as well as changes its shape.
These cursor types are oxygen cursors.
Attempted to generate the oxygen cursors with pacman installs of related oxygen packages to no avail.  Gnome-icon-theme is installed and oxygen-gtk2.  This applied to the booting Compact Flash devices which fail to provide themes for the cursor.
Still no oxygen cursor themes.
Xfce4 was installed with (all).

I noticed that I also had notify-osd installed. It was processing notify-send commands.I uninstalled it using pacman and killed its process. Now, xfce4-notifyd responds to notify-send commands, and the problem is fixed.

I have murrine themes in .themes. You can change the default directory when it is run root if I remember correctly. (And the root directory is not the .themes if I remember too.)
Try copying the theme from /oPT/blah to .themes that you want to use.
Stock themes (non murrine) work, right?

  • Setting cursor theme [solved]

How do I manually set the cursor theme (either system wide or in fvwm config) ?
All of fvwm and gtk apps use the standard Xorg cursor, whereas kde applications use the default kde cursor, so it is a bit annoying that the cursor changes shape all the time.
Last edited by pressh (2007-11-14 20:56:33)

What Ramses de Norre describes will change the cursor for your user only, you might, however, want to change it system-wide (that way whatever login manager you use will have the same cursor theme as your desktop, for example).
    1. Make sure that the cursor theme you want to use is in /usr/share/icons
    2. mkdir /usr/share/icons/default (if it doesn't exist)
    3. inside that directory create a file called "index.theme" which has the following contents:
    [icon theme]
    Inherits=neutral
(change "neutral" to whatever the cursor theme you want to use is called)

  • Gnome hangs when changing theme [SOLVED]

    Hey guys,
Don't know if anyone had this problem of if its been posted before so anyways .....
I recently installed Voodoo with kde, gnome & xfce.
My main desktop is KDE but I do use GNOME & XFCE occasionally.
When on KDE I like to be able to change my gtk theme so I installed gtk-qt-engine.
After choosing a theme in the GTK-QT-Engine settings box my gtk apps would adjust accordingly and everything would be fine.
However, when I logged into GNOME and tried to change the GNOME theme .... my desktop would freeze
If I did a ctrl+atl+del I would be taken to gdm but would now get .Xsession errors when trying to re-login.
I would have to login back to KDE, delete the gconf directories and only then was I able to log back into GNOME.
Now the reason I could not change the theme in GNOME was coz the gtk-qt-engine program modified my .gtkrc-2.0 .... and this was causing all the hang ups .... pun intended.
So I edited the gtk-qt-engine modified .gtkrc-2.0 file & commented out everything.
After this GNOME works perfectly and changing themes is now a snap
    Hope this helps someone.
    Cheers,
    hack

Thank you!  This saved my life!  Well, it did not save my life but it was important.   I thought my GNOME was borked and ended up deleting every config and re-installing it before I came across this.  DOH!

  • Xfce4 compositor missing [solved]

I must be doing something wrong but I can't see it.
I am running xfce4-svn and so far I love it. However I have no compositor in the settings manager under window-manager-tweaks.
    xfwm4 -V gives me:
This is xfwm4 version 4.3.99.2 (revision 24006) for Xfce 4.3.99.2
Released under the terms of the GNU General Public License.
            Compiled against GTK+-2.10.6, using GTK+-2.10.6.
            Build configuration and supported features:
            - Startup notification support:                 Yes
            - XSync support:                                Yes
            - Render support:                               Yes
            - Xrandr support:                               Yes
            - Embedded compositor:                          Yes
            - KDE systray proxy (deprecated):               No
As outlined here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Usi … _extension  my xorg.conf file contains:
    Section "Device"
        Identifier  "gforce2mx"
        Driver      "nvidia"
        Option "TripleBuffer" "True"
        Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"
        Option "RenderAccel" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Extensions"
         Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
It looks like everything is ok in Xorg.0.log

  • [SOLVED]Problems XFCE4: AWM weather notifications, and no logout menu.

    Hi.
Im having some little problems with xfce, the problems doesn's affect the functionality at all but are starting to be really anoying, since i cannot solve them. Since they are small things, i didn't want to open separate topics for them. If this is bad, please tell me.
Ok the most anoying problem is that i keep getting a notification  in the desktop saying that my weather plugin cannot find the data. This notification occurs every hour or so. I tended to ignore it, but it keeps appearing.  Im not using the weather app and i have uninstalled completely from my system. Also i have uninstalled and reinstalled both libnotify and xfce4-notifyd. I have cleared the XFCE sessions cache inmy home folder. I have no idea what else to do. Also i have done " pacman -S xfce4 xfce4-goodies" to reinstall the whole desktop just in the hope that the notification will dissapear. I have no idea what file to remove. ¿Can anyone point me in the right direction?
The second issue comes regarding the xfce options to logout. In the xfce panel there is an option that says logout. This option is supossed to display a menu that gives you options to shutdown, reboot or suspend the computer. I dont get this menu at all, and the logout button just lets me in lxdm sesssion manager. Thus im not able to poweroff the computer directly, and I always use a terminal with the "sudo poweroff" command to poweroff
However i really want the suspend option from this menu. ¿Am i missing some package ?
I have Arch linux installed in another computer, an old netbook, also with xfce4 .Iḿ sure that the logout menu appears in this arch installation.
I just can't think what's wrong. Any help??

eyemonen: Thank you, in fact when i said logout menu i was refering to the applications menu. Just in the bottom there is a logout entry. this entry normally (i think) displays an action menu when you click on it.
But i just discovered the plugin that you said and it works fine, to logout and change user, etc.  I will investigate about the applications menu. to see if it works
Another question, where is the "save session for the future logins" option???
Ah, I have forgot that there is a log out entry in the application menu since I don't use menu myself. To display the logout dialog command xfce4-session-logout is executed without any options. Check if you the logout dialog is displayed when executing this command in terminal. Then take a look at your xfce4-session-logout.desktop file to see if it contains "Exec=xfce4-session-logout" and not something like "Exec=xfce4-session-logout --logout"? Also make sure that your application menu file refers to that desktop file.
The logout dialog contains that "save session for future logins" option.

  • [SOLVED] icon-theme.cache and post install

    Hi all,
after a problem with an app (in this case RawTherapee) that requires uptodate icon-theme.cache files under /usr/share/icons/THEME - I just want to ask for your opinion: Is this a feature that should be provided by the icon-theme package post install?
    For example, xfce4-icon-theme has
    post_install() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/Rodent
    in it's xfce4-icon-theme.install,
    while gnome-icon-theme and hicolor-icon-theme don't and require issueing gtk-update-icon-cache manually after installation/update.
So what do you think, does this call for a feature request?
Edit: Seems like I got the concept wrong and that a solution is not that simple / on the segfaulting programs side... see http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/14237. Thx Jan for explaining.
Last edited by gnidam (2009-04-15 11:31:30)

Apparently gtk-update-icon-cache didn't accept that i had a .icon-theme.cache in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/. After removing it gtk-update-icon-cache apparently created a new file "icon-theme.cache" and doesn't complain anymore. The thing that is wierd about this is that on my other comp i have the .icon-theme.cache and it doesn't complain when upgrading.. Marking this solved anyway

  • [xfce4]howto keep the personalized theme ?

I've got Arch Linux installed on 6 PCs for an association.
We customized xfce4 the best we could, then everything is gone as soon as it gets upgraded (yesterday to 4.2.3-1).
The way we changed the splash screen is dirty, as for now we simply edited /opt/xfce4/share/themes/ArchLinux/balou/themerr and created an image to replace original
I've had no time enough to go deep into xfce4 documentation, but basically, what are the best way to keep our xfce4's customization when updating :
    - Create a custom theme (splash, xfwm4), then manually configuring the PCs one by one ?
    - Create a xfce4 package with special theme files ?
    - Some other way ?
    Thank you for your advice

that's what god (tm) invenetd the ~/.themes folder for
    copy your theme to:
    ~/.themes/<themename>/balou/
under this folder should be the png and the themerc file

I'm not new to Linux or any of the *BSD's, been at it for quite a few years. I am new to Arch, though.
I really like what I've learned about it so far, and really want to embrace it as a main system, but I'm having a hard time getting off the ground. I want to install xfce4, but I keep getting this error:

You could be a little more specific.
    Conflicting packages are:
    libxfce4mcs
    xfce-mcs-manager
    xfce-mcs-plugins
