XMLSocket that did work fails under Flash 9

I have an application that uses Actionscript 1 that was written under Flash mx. It connects to the server via XMLSocket, and worked great until Flash 9. I can see the application request the policy document from the policy server. It connects through the socket but does not transmit data or throw an error. It just sits there.
If I execute a reload after a few seconds with loadMovieNum(_url, 0), it works fine. I suspect I may be dealing with a timing problem. I would appreciate any insight that would help avoid rewriting in Actionscript 3.

flash players have been implementing more and more security features with each version since 8. you almost certainly have encountered a cross-domain security issue that's been implement in flash 9 and was not present in previous player versions.

but fp 10 is even more restictive so you may want to read about the general flash roadmap for fp security.

Thanks to some hints in several strings, I went back to the Control Panel in XP, clicked on Sounds and Devices, clicked on Audio, then changed the default device to the Realtek HD Audio output I have on my computer. Now I can hear You Tube video sound and other Internet audio fine, at least for now. I will come back if it stops again. Thanks to all who posted.

DuplicateMovieClip fails under Flash 8

Has anyone else found problems with Flash 8 Player on
duplicateMovieClip. I have used the attached script to make
multiple versons of a falling rain drop in the past. This script is
still functioning fully when published as Flash 6, from Flash 8
Pro.
In order to take advantage of alpha channel masks which are
now available with Flash 8, I would have thought simply reusing
this trusty script would have worked as it does under Flash 6. But
instead the animation fails to duplicate.
Any suggestions greatly received.

You probably should have started a new thread with your
specific questions, but since you are here…
Under Flash 6 you could do something like this:
myNumber=5+n;
trace(myNumber);
And you would get a trace of 5. Flash just assumed that n was
a variable with a value of zero. But in Flash 7 (and after) this
behaviour changed. If you try this you will get a trace of "NaN"
meaning Not a number.
That is because since you haven't given n a value it makes no
sense to add 5 to something that doesn't have a value. (Not having
a value and having a value of zero are not the same thing!)
So someplace you need to have:
var n:Number=0;
Or whatever value you want n to start at. Flash will no
longer just assume you wanted it to start at zero.
But if you are doing the above code in some kind of loop, you
don't want to have the initilization inside the loop. Otherwise, n
will just keep resetting to zero and you won't ever get
anywhere.

Dynamics not working in 2008 that did work in 4.5

Hi. I have a dashboard originally built in 4.5 that doesn't work properly in 2008. The dashboard has a list box with the regions we have our sales force broken down into with the first region being a conglomeration of all regions called national. In the 4.5 version I can highlight the South East region for example and it gives me a list of salesmen for that region. There are 4 pie charts that show different activities and in 4.5 once you click on South East, the first sales person is automatically highlighted the pie charts all change to reflect his sales figures. I can go to another salesman or region and the sales figures update approriately. If I go back to national all teh charts update appropriately as well. In 2008 when I click on the South East region it shows me a list of salesmen with the first one highlighted but the charts still show the national data. To get the charts to update I need to click on another salesman and then go back to the first one. If I try to go to national the charts never update so once someone clicks off national they can never get the charts back for it unless they close and reopen the file. The old dashboard would not open in 2008 so I had to rebuild it manually. Evrything appears identical but I could easily have missed something. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the functionality working normally again?

yes, i think apple really needs to address this issue. i dont know if they havent made the iphone 4 fully backwards compatible with older bluetooth hardware, but my infiniti FX45 is only a 2008.
bluetooth cuts out all the time, goes back and forth between the radio and the phone, and is completely unreliable. i have the latest iOS installed.
basically cant use bluetooth hands free at all in my car anymore. my iphone 3g and 3gs did okay, didnt have this problem. what gives?
first the antenna problem, and now this. common apple... dont make me go buy a droid.

Flat-panel display that did work... please help!

Hi everyone. Your help on a little problem I've got would be muchly appreciated. Please allow me to explain.
I bought my Dad a Mac mini as his first computer, about eight months ago. We couldn't afford to get him a new monitor with it - so I picked up one from eBay. We had a few problems with it initially when we got to his house and plugged it all up (I had already tested it myself at my home, and it was fine). Basically, the display would 'go to sleep' whenever we plugged it into the computer.
We finally managed to get it working by plugging a different monitor into it - although I'm not entirely sure what changed and why it now worked!
Recently, he had to take it all apart as he was decorating his living room and, when he put it all back together again, he is now having the same problem. Except now I'm 300 miles away and am trying to help him over the phone...
The problem where the monitor 'goes to sleep' is back again. Plugging in another monitor he's been able to borrow temporarily works fine. Interestingly, I can remote desktop to his machine from my house and see that system preferences > display thinks that, when his monitor is plugged in and it says its asleep, the Mac mini thinks that the borrowed Dell monitor is still plugged in (the title bar for sys prefs says 'Dell' with the model number).
I think it has something to do with the resolution that the Mac mini is trying to push out to his monitor, and it not being able to handle it. Is the Mac Mini thinking the wrong monitor is plugged in, and putting the wrong resolution and refresh rate out to it? How does the Mac mini know what the monitor can handle?
I have tried resetting the PRAM, and I've also tried removing the preferences files described in this hint (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3981395&#3981395).
It does work on some of the resolutions (I can change the resolution over remote desktop and my Dad tells me if he can see anything his end), but the ideal one he was using before doesn't work. It briefly worked on a good resolution, but I clicked 'Detect displays', and then it 'went to sleep' again, and we can't get it back.
Can anyone help please! My Dad loves his new Mac - this is the first thing to go wrong with it in all the time he's had it. And I'm a little stumped!

I'm not 100% what make the monitor is - certainly nothing I had ever heard of before.
The resolution we were trying to get was 1024 x 768, I believe. The monitor could handle the resolution above, and it could handle the resolution below (in the sys prefs > displays list).
Tellingly, when I change the external monitor connected to my Macbook, System Prefereces > Displays will indicate in the title bar what model monitor is plugged in. However, on my Dad's Mini, when we plugged his monitor in (after having the Dell monitor he borrowed plugged in), System Preferences still thought he had the Dell monitor plugged in.
Could the problem be that OS X thinks its is displaying through the Dell monitor still (which has different capabilities to Dad's monitor), and therefore putting a resolution out to the monitor that it can't handle? If this is the case, then I would guess that either the DDC signal in the monitor is broken, or whatever mechanism in the Mac Mini to detect this isn't working properly.
Any thoughts anyone?

Since updating I can't click on horizontally placed links, buttons etc have uninstalled and reinstalled still doing it. Cant even see how to get an older version that did work and have run a virus check. explorer works

Firefox was automatically updated to 7 and now all the websites I go on the horizontal active things you would click on will not do anything. eg in ebay I can't access "My ebay" and in facebook can't click on my profile or messages, in Flickr I can't click on "Your Photostream" which means I can't use it. I tried explorer and all these work so it has to be firefox. I uninstalled and reinstalled and ran a complete system virus check on top of the active ongoing one and nothing no change. I am at a loss what to do now. A relative suggested downloading an older version that worked but I can't even see how to do that. I would appreciate help so I could use firefox as in the meantime I am stuck with exporer which I hate. Thanks

- To rule out a software problem try the follow oneat a time:
- Reset the iPod, nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore the iPod from backup
- Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem you likely have a hardware problem withthe iPod. It cold be the headphone/mic jack.
In that case, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

That's true that Flex4.5 SDK under Flash builder Burito doesn't listen Enter key in Text Area for KeyUp or KeyDown event.
Here I found a work around you can use.
Add an eventlistener to the component in actionscript and set the useCapture=true next to eventlistener function. Now you can listen enter key for KeyUp or KeyDown Event

Java applets that worked fine under 10.6 don't work under 10.7. What can I do to correct this?

Java applets that worked just fine are no longer working after upgrading to MacOS X 10.7 (Lion). Here is one example:

I did download and install the Java VM for Lion and I did "activate" the applet when prompted to do so. However, the example cited above fails to load.
A second example is JFileUpload which enables a drag & drop UI with which to upload files. Worked great under 10.6 but under 10.7 dropping a file on the UI only causes the web browser to display the file, not upload it.

I did that right off but this is not the issue and that tactic didn't work. Apple has acknowledged the issue and the workaround (extract the applet from the web page) seems to suggest that Safari is at fault. Safari 5.2 was just released today but, unfortunately, doesn't correct this issue.
In the case of the applet that I use most often (JFileUpload), it also has a File menu so I use that instead. Nonetheless, I sure do miss drag & drop. As more and more of our Mac users upgrade to Lion and bump into this issue, we expect our support effort to be challenged with an increasing number of irate users. It doesn't help to be able to say "It's Apple's Fault" but that's all we can say.

Firefox keeps asking to install Flash. When I attempt this, I get an error message stating it failed. Flash works in Google Chrome, but not FF.

There is no other information given and I'm just left hanging. I've tried this over twenty times with the same results. I've even uninstalled and re-installed Firefox, but this continues. I'm unable to watch any YouTube videos. I then installed Google Chrome and all is working fine. I can't stand the Google company though and really with I could continue using Firefox. Why is GC working for me any FF not? How can I fix this?

Google Chrome comes with its own Flash plugin, so doesn't require to install Flash separately.

Using a Windows 2012 RDS Environment, we have users connecting to a CPD website, and as part of the CPD they need to run a systems checker. When they run the systems checker they get the following error message: "Adobe Flash FAIL: Adobe Flash Player local storage settings incorrect. Module 'Resume' feature may not work on this computer". All users are connecting to this environment with Windows CE Clients,I have checked the setting on Adobe Flash and they seem correct but as each user has its own profile on the RDS session, is there something that I should be setting for each user. I have added the website to the trusted sites and it has made no difference. Any ideas

It sounds like what's happening is that Flash Player can't write or read from the local shared objects in the user's redirected home directory because we disallow traversing junctions in the broker process. This behavior was disabled to address a vulnerability identified in some of John Forshaw's research into the IE broker last year.
You can enable this behavior by adding the following setting to mms.cfg:
EnableInsecureJunctionBehavior=1
That said, you can probably gather from the name of the flag that we don't really recommend this approach, and disable this attack surface by default. There's some risk that a network attacker could craft content that abuses fundamental issues with how Windows handles Junctions to write to arbitrary locations.
Unfortunately, there's not a simple or easy workaround that I'm aware of (but it's been ages since I've administered a Windows domain) for this kind of NAS/SAN-backed terminal server environment where Flash is not able to access \Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\ without traversing a junction.

I finally just resolved this after not being able to enable location services since upagrading to iOS 7. Posting the solution here 'cause I couldn't find it anywhere else.
I enabled Restrictions under Settings > General > Restrictions and created a passcode (I'm not sure if this was part of the solution, but it wasn't enabled for me by default.)
In Restrictions, under Privacy, Location Services was set to "Allow Changes" (This still didn't solve the issue of the greyed-out Location Services switch though - I still couldn't turn it on.)
Also in Restrictions, I also switched "Find My Friends" to "Allow Changes"
Once I did step 3, the switch under Settings > Privacy > Location Services was no longer greyed out and could be switched on.

Are you saying that you contacted Apple support and they instructed you to backup and restore your iPad? Or do you mean that you picked up this information from an online support article? If you spoke to an Apple rep or received these instructions via email, contact them again for further help.
I fail to see how restoring your iPad would enable yoyr Apple ID.
