Xorg.conf disappears, then X doesn't load
So I come back from vacation, the computer apparently has been working fine this whole time, and my brother goes to the computer and gets some error message. Turns out the xorg.conf somehow disappeared totally. I remade the thing, and it looks right, but X doesn't work. I run startx as a user or as root and the screen flashes dark and then goes into low power mode or whatever it is where the monitor on light changes and it stays black, and then I can't get it to go back, so I have to CTRL-ALT-DELETE and restart, and the logs don't say anything about an error.
However, if I put in my Arch CD and boot into the system, X loads just fine, except for that the mouse doesn't work. I don't know what's wrong.

My browser will not load a page or update unless I am actively moving my cursor or typing. If I select a page and don't do anything then it doesn't load at all. I have no idea how this happened or how to fix it. Thanks.

I've tried to upload a screenshot of firefox but it's not happening.
Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).

If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top of the screen to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.<br>Click the Maximize button (top right corner of the Navigation Toolbar) to leave full screen mode or right-click empty space on a toolbar and choose "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press the F11 key.
It is also possible that you are in a pop-up window with some toolbars disable.

Xorg.conf.d not loading when thinkpad docked
When installing arch on my workstation, a lenovo thinkpad t530, it all worked basically fine, just some issues with setting boot partitions and such. The problem I have that I haven't been able to solve is that if I start X while the laptop is docked, to a series 3 dock with an extra monitor and some peripherals connected, none of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d files seems to be loaded. This mostly shows by both the screens showing a cloned desktop with 1024x768 (or similar low resolution) and my keyboard configuration isn't loaded. All this works perfectly fine when starting X when the laptop isn't docked and I can't find anything strange about it in the log.
I currently, partly, solve this by calling xrandr and setxkbmap with the correct arguments in ~/.xinit but I really don't like that solution.
So my question is: Is there any known issues that could cause this or where should I start looking for the cause?
I'm not using any desktop environment, display manager or similar, just starting dwm from ~/.xinit when running xinit
For stackexchange reputation it's possible to answer the question at unix.stackexchange too:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … ile-dockedjbritton wrote:Ok, so I reinstalled everything, and followed the new instruction in the Beginners Guide to install # pacman -S xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm
Did you start at that part of the guide, or all the way back to the part that says:
Wiki wrote:
Install the base packages:
# pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils
The instructions for xorg-twm xorg-xclock and xterm were to give a really basic gui for testing X, but wouldn't pull in xorg-server which is what should give you xorg.conf.d and also pulls in the evdev driver as a dependency.
I noticed that hal was installed as apart of this. Anyone have another suggestion? I checked in /etc/X11 and the xorg.conf.d folder is still missing.
That part seems odd, could you be using an out of date mirror? The current version of the xorg-server package is 1.9.4.901-1 -
Xorg.conf nVidia ION resolution
Sorry for my English.
I have this board: ASUS AT5IONT-I, Atom D525, ION2, PCI-E 4X, 2xDDR3 SODIMM, Gbit LAN,E-sata, USB3.0, DVI, HDMI, Fanless, Heatpipe, Mini-ITX.
And, trying to make HTPC.
I install Arch with openbox, but the problem is with video resolution.
I use my 32PFL9606H Philips TV 32''.
I set proper 1920x1080 resolution is xorg.conf but "xdpyinfo | grep dimensions" reports: "dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters)"
here is my xorg.conf:

PS: I deleted /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, but after reboot it is not recreated. Why? And remember that it said something like:

[ 185.106] (==) NVIDIA(0): will be used as the requested mode.

Please don't use xorg.conf, edit the files inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ instead.
I also have an ION board and have working HDMI connection with audio at 1920x1080 using the below configuration. Remove your xorg.conf and then edit these files:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "True"
HorizSync 14-70
VertRefresh 48-62
Modeline "1920x1080-TV" 148.35 1920 2008 2152 2300 1080 1084 1089 1125
Option "DPMS"

Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidModes"
Option "UseEdidDpi" "False"
Option "DPI" "100 x 100"
EndSection
Please note that the above Modeline works on my TV (a 22'' low cost brand one) but I cannot guarantee it will work on yours.
Try that first, then if it doesn't work, try to generate one using the cvt command, and replace the Modeline:
cvt 1920 1080
it should output something like this:
# 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
If this method doesn't work either, try the method explained here (which is the one I've first used to find the right Modeline). Its tricky method, and requires a bit of work and lot of patience ... just don't give up
Finally, a little bonus . To have working HDMI sound, I have to put these lines in /etc/asound.conf:
/etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
device 3
Again, you may need to change the device index in your case. You can list alsa devices using aplay -l command:

Monitor configuration not set with xorg.conf
Hey,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad x230 with Intel HD4000 Graphics in a Mini Dock Series 3 usb 3.0.
Connected to the Dock are both a 23' Workstation Monitor and a 32' TV. So with the internal Laptop Monitor there are 3 Screens available. The HD4000 is unfortunately able to drive only 2 of them at the same time.
My prefered setup would be to boot up with the 23' Monitor as primary Screen and the internal Display as second.
I can run this setup without problems if configuring it with xrandr but trying to boot with similar configuration in xorg, the internal Monitor ends up being the primary Display (and virtually left to the 23' instead of, on the right..).
My xorg.conf:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "HDMI3"
Option "Primary" "true"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "LVDS1"
Option "RightOf" "HDMI3"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "HDMI2"
Option "Ignore" "true"
EndSection
In Xorg.0.log i can see the configuration is perfectly loaded but at the very end, a (wrong) configuration overrides it
**Correct**
[ 210.621] (II) intel(0): switch to mode [email protected] on pipe 0 using HDMI3, position (0, 0), rotation normal
[ 210.822] (II) intel(0): switch to mode [email protected] on pipe 1 using LVDS1, position (1920, 0), rotation
**Incorrect**
[ 211.486] (II) intel(0): switch to mode [email protected] on pipe 1 using LVDS1, position (0, 0), rotation normal
[ 211.486] (II) intel(0): switch to mode [email protected] on pipe 0 using HDMI3, position (1366, 0), rotation
As far as i could see the xorg should have the highest priority or am I wrong?
DM is Cinnamon.
Any help is welcome!
Thxnobodynhio wrote:As far as i could see the xorg should have the highest priority or am I wrong?
I think you are. I suspect cinnamon is overriding your setup - X starts with the settings you specified in xorg.conf, then cinnamon reads it's own settings and applies those. Try a simple window manager like openbox, if you'll get your xorg.conf setup, then you'll know it's indeed cinnamon messing things up. -
Is it possible to have per-user xorg.confs? I scanned the internet and read the man pages, but I could not find much. The man pages, confusingly enough, define $HOME in the section about where startx looks for xorg.conf and then does not use it. Neat.
I have a "freevo" users that boots into freevo, and I want it to make the resolution 800x600 and enable tv-out at the same resolution, so I need a custom xorg.conf.
-- Michael-config does not seem to work that way. The man pages for xorg.conf agree with what I have noticed:
/etc/X11/<cmdline>
/usr/etc/X11/<cmdline>
/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
/usr/etc/X11/$XORGCONFIG
/etc/X11/xorg.conf-4
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/xorg.conf
/usr/etc/X11/xorg.conf.<hostname>
/usr/etc/X11/xorg.conf-4
/usr/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.<hostname>
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf-4
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf
where <cmdline> is a relative path (with no ".." components) specified
with the -config command line option, $XORGCONFIG is the relative path
(with no ".." components) specified by that environment variable, and
<hostname> is the machine's hostname as reported by gethostname(3).
Thinking about this more, I'm not sure what the solution is. Since I log into users using GDM, X is already started. How would one set up custom video configurations for each user? Is there a way to apply a new xorg.conf while X is running? -

iTunes will not open at all. It looks like it will and then it doesn't (the windows loading symbol appears and then it disappears). I even tried uninstalling iTunes and downloading it again and installing it, nothing works! Please Help!
1. First check if this file APSDaemon.exe is the problem here.
Close your iTunes.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del key and choose Task Manager. In the "Processes" Tab, select the file APSDaemon.exe and click End Prosses button, then close the task manager window.
Now open itunes and see if it is working?
If that works, to prevent having to do the same process everytime you restart Windows, go to. START button, type in
MSCONFIG
Hit ENTER
Click STARTUP Tab, Uncheck "Apple Push", click OK.
Restart Windows.
2. If that fails, refer to following article to remove SC Info.lib file:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2363
3. If that fails, repair or reinstall your Quicktime. START / CONTROL PANEL / PROGRAMS N FEATURES / hightlight QUICKTIME and click REAPIR. -
Firewall doesn't load ipfw.conf
This is a repost in the 10.5 forum; it was posted in the 10.4 forum by mistake as http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6834128
PROBLEMS:
1. Unable to forward port 80 to port 8080 using Apple's Firewall in Server Admin (Firewall => Settings => Advanced). I want to forward port 80 (and 443) so that I can run Tomcat 6 standalone as a non-privileged user).
2. Apple's firewall documentation states that rules in /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf will be loaded after /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf.apple is loaded, but upon reboot this does not happen. It does work if Server Admin is used to modify the Firewall rules after booting.
This is /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf.apple -- all standard rules as shipped by Apple except for rule 1010 which should forward port 80 to port 8080. It does not work. However, adding rule 1010 as any rule number < 1000 and it does work (but this can't be done using ServerAdmin; it must be done manually).

The above rule 1010 does NOT work; no forwarding occurs. However, applying the exact same rule on the command line works perfectly:
sudo ipfw add 100 fwd 127.0.0.1,8080 tcp from any to any dst-port 80 in
After the above line is executed, port forwarding works great:

Of course, rule #100 added via "sudo ipfw..." disappears upon reboot. So I tried adding it to /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf because Apple's comments in /etc/ipfilter/ipfw.conf.default state:

But this is not true--upon reboot the rules are not loaded as seen by 'ipfw show'. However, making a change in the Server Admin GUI does add the rules in ipfw.conf! Go figure.
Workaround
I created a 'launchd' plist/script just to add the rule I need, and that works OK. But why can't this just work like it's supposed to?
*The file setup-ipfw.plist in /Library/LaunchDaemons:*
<?xml version=“1.0” encoding=“UTF-8”?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC “-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN” “<a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd”>">http://www.apple.com/DT Ds/PropertyList-1.0.dtd”>
<plist version=“1.0”>
<dict>
<key>Disabled</key> <false/>
<key>LaunchOnlyOnce</key><true/>
<key>EnvironmentVariables</key>
<dict>
<key>DIGLLOYD_WEB</key><string>/web</string>
</dict>
<key>Label</key><string>DIGLLOYD Firewall Setup</string>
<key>OnDemand</key><false/>
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
<string>/web/scripts/setup-ipfw.sh</string>
</array>
<key>RunAtLoad</key><true/>
<key>ServiceDescription</key><string>DIGLLOYD map ports</string>
<key>UserName</key><string>root</string>
</dict>
</plist>
*The script (mangled in part by this forum):*
DIGLLOYD-INC-Server:~ lloyd$ cat /web/scripts/setup-ipfw.sh
export RULE_NUM=101
function shutdown()
ipfw delete $RULE_NUM
ipfw add $RULE_NUM fwd 127.0.0.1,8080 tcp from any to any 80 in

[SOLVED]xorg.conf, my screen doesn't fit on my screen
Hi, I've got everything set up & working well except for my screen. The desktop is too big for the monitor, about a third of it is hidden off the monitor to the bottom right. I've looked at the wiki and tried xrandr, but no dice. I'm using the VESA driver which has always worked ok in other distros. Actually the crunchbang splashscreen was like this, but otherwise it was normal. I tried the openchrome driver, got a blank screen. Searched other BBS too. I don't know the term for this problem to search for. The drivers off the VIA site are for older kernels, I'd rather just get it working with VESA, with a 1Ghz CPU I don't see myself doing much in 3D anyway.

Just about everything else is working like a dream, I was hoping to get it all going without posting, but here we are. Thanks a lot for any help.

It was enough to remove the display mode 1280x1024 in all screen sections.

We have iPhotos in a shared folder so both my pertner and I can access the pictures.
Recently, when my partner tries to open some of the more recent pictures, they open briefly, then disappear. This doesn't happen with all of them, and there doesn't seem to be any link between those that do, and those that don't.
When I try to open them, they open with no problem, and remain open until I close them.
Has anyone any solutions, please?
Thanks.A shared folder is not sufficient to share an iPhoto library. When you open the library from your account, the ownership and permissions of library items changes.
The safest way to share a library is to put it onto a separate disk or disk partition with the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag set. See this document on how to achieve this:

facebook is my homepage in ff.so I login and then my homepage doesn't load.. ...sometimes I can go to fb help and click on games or other pages and it comes on by way of games usually.....but after a while it goes back off....same way in IE ....have done all updates got all latest versions so what is wrong ....I have read everything on this computer ...it has been this way for nearly 2 weeks now....so please help....even if I get the home page to come up then some game issues face me....loading halfway ...no friends names are showing etc.Please help........
When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive. It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas? I'm wondering if restarting the computer might help but have been afraid to do so in case it would make it harder to recover anything...I was looking at this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4211589?start=0&tstart=0 in the hopes that it might have a helpful suggestion but it's definitely a different scenario.
