Xpostfacto & installing Panther on upgraded PPC 7300 w/G3 Sonnet card

I have a 7300 upgraded w/Sonnet G3 card and an extra SCSI disk - IBM. This 2nd disk is 8/9 GB and appears not to have ability to set SCSI address so I am stuck w/0. Fine. It also might be slow on the spinup steering the Mac hardware to prefer the Quantum.
I am trying to install Panther (I bought a set of eMac installation cd's) via Xpostfacto 4.0. When I try to select the IBM disk for OSX installation (Primary is a Quantum 4 GB w/OS 9.1 where Xpostfacto is located), it remains 'grayed-out'. Only the Quantum is available for installation by Xpostfacto. The IBM disk is initialized to HPF+ - however, I have not caused any OS9 drivers to be deposited upon it during initialization (something I ran across in the recent postings - last 90 days - on the subject. Is it important to put drivers on the 2nd disk?).
Why is the IBM disk unsuitable for installation by Xpostfacto? Should I try an older version (3.1)? Must I install any drivers on the IBM drive, now partitioned into two 4GB partitions?
Also, if I went ahead with the installation on the Quantum (OS 9.1 is not important to me) would it replace OS 9.1 or merely add it to the Quantum, making other problems?
Alternately, if I could successfully install 9.1 on the IBM disk, would that clear up the problem to Xpostfacto allowing me to install 10.3.3 on the Quantum?

What model SCSI drive is the IBM? Is it an Apple labeled IBM Model DNES-309170? If so, that's an LVD/SE SCSI drive, which requires better termination than the drive-based termination found on the Quantum drive. When you run it in SE mode, you must terminate the SCSI ribbon cable with an active SCSI terminator on the last connector. To do this, you'll need to rearrange the two hard drives in your 7300's drive bay assembly. Move the Quantum drive down to the lower bay (requires a different plastic sled), and install the IBM drive in the upper bay. Additionally, every SCSI drive should have the capability to assign a distinct address, or you'd have configuration headaches with the SCSI chain. If you turn over the drive, you should see a sticker(s) detailing the jumper settings. For the LVD/SE IBM drive I've mentioned, you need to enable SE mode, by placement of a jumper across pins 6. Since you need to disable drive termination on the Quantum (when set up as I've described), take that jumper and place it across the pins labeled 0 (if you haven't done so already). As you may know, this sets its SCSI address to 1. The IBM drive can remained unchanged with its default address setting of 0, assuming that it hasn't been changed.
If you have the 9 GB SCSI-2 IBM drive, then follow my suggestions about address settings - leave the IBM at 0 and change the Quantum's address to 1. Disregard the mention of a jumper for SE mode. You will need to place a jumper across the pins designated for TE (termination enable). There may be a separate jumper block on the IBM drive with a jumper positioned to provide Term Power. That should be left alone, but it's not the same as TE. The jumper setting for TE should be located on the same block as the address pins.

  • Help!  Installed Panther and upgraded to 10.4.3 and cannot reply to emails

    Hi,
Just installed to Panther a few days ago and yesterday I downloaded the 10.4.3 upgrade and now nothing happens when I hit "reply" to a mail message. Also, if I hit "forward" or "compose" the proper window opens up but I can't type more than a few characters or delete what little I get to type.
Any help/info will be greatly appreciated.

  • Just installed Panther, Safari crashs constantly... ideas? (inc. crash log)

Hey guys, so while my regular computer is being worked on, I'm using this old PowerMac G4 (400 Ghz, I know, it's old). I actually just had to Archive & (Re)install Panther--a friend from the Geek Squad had worked on/looked at it recently regarding removing an older drive that had failed, when I got it back for whatever reason it had reverted to OS9 so I had to upgrade, but THAT'S another story--and first tried using Safari, but it's been crashing constantly... like, 3 times within 10 minutes. I don't even have to be using it, and it'll just crash behind whatever program--Finder, etc.--I'm running; I'm currently using Firefox even to browse online and post this.
Any ideas?? Normally I NEVER have any problems with Safari crashing--in fact, I've had more trouble with Firefox doing so--so I don't know why this is. The ONLY thing I can think is that I wasn't able to fully install the 2nd disc of Panther--it said there were "errors" while I was doing so--so maybe I can/should try again. But for the time being, here's one of the crash logs I've been getting, in case it would help you guys to troubleshoot....

Yeah, it's the 2nd disc... I put it in when it was asked for, it ran its course but it said "There Were Errors" afterwards... which is another thing I REALLY can't figure out, because I've used these discs to install Panther a few times without any problems or warnings (I had a boot drive crash about a year ago and had to use them to reinstall everything; this Archive & Install's like the 3rd time, though I STILL can't figure out why/what this Geek Squad guy must've done to cause my OS to downgrade like that...).
Firefox SEEMS to be working fine (knock wood), but I'd really like to figure this out, get Safari working too.
So what are you guessing? Anything I need to try changing in the settings?? Or adjusting with Flash?? I WOULD delete it and use Firefox to download it/try reinstalling it, but I'm really not sure if that's going to work...

  • Installing Panther on my ibook

i have an old ibook g3 and it is running 10..2, which does not support airport extreme WPA passwords. so our network runs on just that, so i need 10.3 to b able to get on the network.
i have resource install discs that came with my fathers laptop, which is an ibook g4. some people have said that the discs are made only for one specific system, but wen i used to have a clamshell, i was able to get os x 10.2 on it easily with my friends discs.
so im really confused and have no idea what to do or if im gonna need to get real OS disks.

    Welcome To Discussions Grimm 665!
    Here is some additional information.
Once a purchased version of OS X has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As Gulliver posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

  • IMac DV/400 will not read CD's since I installed Panther

    Hi,
A customer's iMac DV/400 with 384 MB RAM was running OS 9.2.2. We decided to upgrade his OS to 10.3 (firmware was already up to date 4.19) After the first CD finished and it restarted and asked for disk 2, it would no longer read ANY CD's. In fact I had to cancel the rest of the install, because it wouldn't even recognize disk 2. What can be done to fix this? nothing has changed except the OS. I made the Mac boot from the old 9.2.2 again and the CD's read fine.
    HELP!

If the DV ROM works with OS 9.2.2 then there is nothing wrong with it. Try installing Panther again. What is the size of the hard drive? Does it have enough free space?

  • Can't install panther 10.3 on iMac G3

first of all, sorry for my bad english, and lack of capitals : i am using an old version of internet explorer version 5 i guess, which does not recognise the french characters, accents, capitals and the rest...
now my main problem : i am trying to install panther ( mac os10.3 ) on my imac 406 g3, running on mac os 9.2.2 with upgraded firmware.
when trying to run the first installation disk, the system replies :
    an error occured
startup disk was unable to select the install cd as the startup disk. ( -2)
i am also unable to start from the disk by pressing the c key, and also unable to select the disk in the through the " demarrage " in " tableau de bord " menu

From what I gather in your reply, I believe you're saying it is a 4 GB hard drive. Yes, OS X will run on your iMac, but you need a larger hard drive just to do that. OS X takes up gigabytes of space, requires even more gigabytes just to be able to run properly, and OS X applications take up much more disk space than anything before them.
Your iMac also shipped with 128 MB of RAM, but you'll need at least 512 MB to make it run with any sort of speed. If you can, get two 512 MB RAM modules for your system and have your Apple Authorized Service Provider install one (or both) of them for you. The module it came with is soldered in place, so you can't access it easily to replace it. You can put up to 1 GB of RAM in your machine (two 512 MB PC66 144 pin SO-DIMM modules).
At the same time, get yourself a good 60 to 80 GB hard drive (Seagate, IBM, Maxtor are all good brands, and make sure it has at least a 3 year warranty) and have your service provider install that for you at the same time as the RAM.

  • Display problems when installing Panther

I purchased a G3 blue/white from work with 9.2.2 and the panther install disks (3 of them). The monitor was fine in 9.2.2. Upon inserting the panther disks, the display went grayscale and was next to unreadable. However, the install continued through disks one and two (never asked for 3?). Rebooting does not help, but I can tell it is running os x. Did the display drivers crash? I do not have the original 9.2.2 disks. Any advice?
I can tell you it has 192 ram and is a 300 mhz. I can't recall the size of the hard drive. However, when I opened the drive icon after installing panther, it listed about 40 mg as available.

For your machine to be upgraded from 9.2.2 to OS X, the firmware needs to be upgraded first. If you have not upgraded the firmware, I suggest that you go to Apple's firmware site and follow the instructions there to download and install the firmware.
I recently went through the process of updating the firmware on a iMac G3 and found the process to be a little tricky. This is what I learned:
After downloading the software, there was a folder called iMac Firmware Update on my desktop. That had 3 files in it, including an "About iMac Firmware Update". It is crucial to read that and to follow the directions. Rougly, you have to:
    - double click the iMac Firmware Updater
    - shut down the computer when prompted
-hold in the programmer's button (location shown in the instructions) with the tip of a pen and restart while holding the button
    - keep holding the button until a long tone is heard
    - after that, the update runs by itself and the computer will reboot. After it rebooted, I received a message that the update had been completed successfully.
The details might vary slightly for your machine, but I expect the general method is the same.
    I hope this helps.

  • Stuck: can't re-install Panther, only OS 10.0.3

OK, I've posted this also on OS 10.3 and earlier.
    Here's a short story:
Panther ran beautifully fore quite a while, then started to have kernel panics due to faulty RAM.
I just replaced the 2 128 Mb sticks that were faulty with a brand new 512 from Crucial.
But still could'nt start-up in Panther. Got freezes during installation always on the first CD. Also got panics (cpu 0) or "can't find PowerMac drive".
Ran DiskWarrior and there was a whole bunch of stuff wrong and repaired.
    Still same symptoms.
Everything was backed-up and I zeroe'd the HD
Then re-installed OS 9.1, updated with OS 9.2.1 with CD. All was well, then I could'nt install Panther. Same symptoms.
I got fed-up, changed the HD, brand new Western Digital 80 GB.
Started over again and same results: OS9 OK, no-go on Panther...
I can install OS 10.0.3 that came with the beast but can't upgrade to 10.1 with the CD that also came with the iMAc. Say's that the installer unexpectadely quit (error 0)...
Panther disks are retail, could they be faulty ???
    Any ideas anyone
    Thanks

    Hi Ron,
This is what I have on Open Firmware:
    Apple Powermac4, 1 4.1.9f1 BootROM built on 09/14/01 at 13:18:04
Yesterday and last night I ran the Hardware Test in loop mode and got twice an error concerning the modem. It is not and was not in use recently and normally I use the Ethernet connection for WWW.
    The error code was: modm/2/8
First time on loop 13, second time on loop 45
On restart, I had the pleasure of having the question mark, so I tried booting with Panther CDs and only got panics.
On the first time there was only the dark window asking to restart. On the second try, I got the usual: (CPU 0) Unable to find driver... and lower: no debugger configured...
So I booted with the OS 9 CD, repaired the disk and got:
    Invalid catalog record type,4,1499
    SOS can not repair disk
I repaired a second and third time and both were then OK.
Because I have nothing of consequence on the HD and a bit out of frustation, I reformatted (extended) and reinstalled OS 9 and all went OK.
This is were I'm at now, had to leave for work.
This modem error, could it be the culprit?
    Is it repairable?
I'm still not convinced about the Panther CDs, I'll try to find another set.
I'll post this also on my other thread in OS X 10.3 and earlier to keep Gulliver informed.
    Ciao

  • Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

    Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.

Well, it is mind bogling cause:
    1) OS 9.2.1 is installed and bootable
    2) OS X ver 0.3 is installed and bootable
    Both OS run fine.
I tried again this morning by booting with the Panther CD's:
    - still no possibility to repair OS 9
    - still offers only an Archive and Install, that failed.
I went to look in the Receipts file but there's only packages concerning OS 10.0, nothing on 10.3
I couldn't start in Single User to fiddle around with it maybe I could try stuff in Terminal
I had to leave for work,(yes even on Easter...) so I started the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode and I'll see around midnite if something shows up.
There's nothing important on the HD so I could erase everything and start over but I don't feel it will work since I've just did that.
    I think it's something else,
    - Bad CD (it's 10.3.0
    - Bad RAM (even though it's brand new, I'll have to check it with Memtest if I can run it)
    - Bad wiring somewhere inside
    - Bad luck...
If there's any other ideas, there welcome of course...
    Happy Easter all

  • Installing Panther 10.5 from a dual quad 3.2 tower on Macbook Pro 2.16

Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't want to take a chance of creating issues with my laptop.
I have been doing on location editing with my Macbook Pro 2.16 (with the Intel Chip), that is running on Tiger 10.4, Final Cut Studio 1.
I recently purchased a 3.2 dual Quad tower which shipped with Leopard 10.5, and have upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
I want to get the laptop on the same OS and FC Studio version so I can move projects between computers on external hard drives. The tower and laptop are not linked via a network and never will be.
Can I just install the Leopard 10.5 Disk that shipped with the new tower on the Macbook Pro 2.16?
I have heard that the install disk's that come with the computers are specific to that computer.
Can I then install the new upgrade of FC Studio 2 on the MacBook Pro 2.16?
Or will I experience complications that would have been avoided if I had just purchased another copy of the Panther 10.5 OS?
Thanks for any help in trying to avoid issues in the future...
    Bob

To (slightly) expand on what David told you in the other thread ...
    1. The OSX install disks shipped as OEM with computers are not compatible with another model.
    2. One OSX license, one computer.
    3. As David already noted, a laptop and a desktop can share a FCP license as long as you do not use them simultaneously.

  • Installing Panther on Grape iMac 333

    Hi
A friend bought a cheap 333 iMac and I'm trying to install Panther on it.
After much effort and upgrading the firmware I finally managed to upgrade it to 9.1.
I load the Panther disk and click the install. It tells me to restart to I click the restart button only for it to load back into OS 9.1 again.
I've tried holding C when starting to boot from the CD but it's not having that either.
The machine only has 64MB RAM so I'm not expecting it to be fast but it should at least instal or give me some feedback surely?
    Help appreciated.

    Roger Holden...
64MB will not run Panther, period. You need at least 128MB to boot.

  • Can't install Panther- or kinda did?

I hope someone can help- I've spent days futzing with my computer and combing the discussions and support articles and am still stumped.
I recently received a used white iBook G3 from a friend with OS 9.1 on it. I want to upgrade it to Panther. I read in these forums that I needed to upgrade the startup disk to 9.2 in order to be able to start up from the Panther cds so I did that. I still could not get the computer to start up from the cd in order to install OS 10.3. I tried choosing in startup, pressing c as i restarted, pressing option as I restarted, no luck. Then I tried as I read somewhere here, pressing X as I restarted- and joyful day, I got the music and the OS X welcome. I got through the next couple pages asking me to set up internet, mail and to register (which I couldn't complete bc I wasn't hooked up to the internet) and then I was at an OS X desktop without actually having installed, didn't get to customize, choose archive and install or anything. Turns out I'm now in 10.0.3 and don't seem to be able to install Panther or install anything from the 2nd or 3rd cd! Was anything installed? I don't have iPhoto or many other things. Did a half install take place? Restarting from cd 1 does nothing. And I can't install anything off of cd 2 or 3. Please help!
What actually happened? And how can I complete this attempted installation?

Your post is quite confusing as you say you want to install Panther but somehow installed 10.0.3. ("Turns out I'm now in 10.0.3 and don't seem to be able to install Panther or install anything from the 2nd or 3rd cd!") First, unless you installed many of the extras all of Panther will install from one or two CDs.
Second, you don't need OS 9 at all. If you plan to run OS 9 applications and use Classic while running OS X, then you need to install OS 9.1 or higher, but OS 9 is not required in any way for OS X.
Because you've provided no useful information on the actual model and configuration of your Mac, it's pretty difficult to go much further. Installing Panther requires a minimum of 128 MBs of installed RAM and at least an 8 GB hard drive. For any practical use you really need about 512 MBs of installed RAM and a 20 GB hard drive.
I suggest you might try all over and do the following:
Insert the Panther Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. Immediately after you hear the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Don't release the key until you see a spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select the hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the left side list, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window, set the number of partitions to one (1) and the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the respective drop down menus. Click on the Partition button. After partitioning has completed quit DU and return to the installer.
Proceed with the installation until you reach the point where you select a destination drive. Click on the drive then click on the Options button. Be sure to select the Erase and Install option then click on OK. Continue with the installation. In the next dialog you should see a Customize button. Click on it to customize your installation. Continue and finish the installation. If files are needed from a second disc you will be prompted after the computer restarts.
At the top of this page you will see a navbar link titled "Manuals." Click on it and you will be able to track down a PDF copy of the User Guide for your computer as well as guides for OS X. I recommend you obtain the manuals and read them thoroughly.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • Trying to install Panther, could not find DVD player

While trying to install panther 10.3 if would get to the end and give the message that there were errors installing the software. I was asked if it would play a dvd and found out it wouldn't. The dvd icon would come up but when i clicked on it there would be a couple of things video and audio. Nothing would work and then I tried to find the DVD player and it wasn't in applications or anywhere else I could think of.
I don't have the original 10.2 disks, just the 10.3 upgrade.
    Any ideas?

I replaced the CD with another and it works fine -- I guess its the drive.

  • Can you install Panther on an eMac using retail disks?

I've had problems in the past installing Panther onto an eMac using retail disks.
is there a problem doing this??
past issue - once installed, and booting for the first time, the screen on the eMac would only show the center 50%, the cursor would not go outside of it but there were buttons and icons outside of it. i had to install from the eMac disks and then upgrade to server. (i was doing a OS X Server install onto an eMac then)
current issue - i can't boot from the Panther disk 1!!! checking to make sure it is not the disk..... my client was in the middle of installing Panther, and in the middle of disk 1 it froze and i think gave a KP based on his report of what happened.
    thanks
    bob

When you get the blinking mac face/question mark when booting, this means that your machine can't find the startup disk it's looking for - whether cd or hard drive. After a moment, it then searches until it finds any startup disk. You can lose your Classic - OS9, while doing operating systems loads if you don't restore it from your original system disks that came with your machine. There may be problems trying to go back to 10.2 from 10.3. It's not a problem I've had, but someone was telling me that the major upgrades (Jaguar to Panther) may have firmware updates that aren't compatible if you try to reload the older OS. It's best to install Panther, then reinstall your applications from the original disks that came with your machine.
