XRAID Upgrade - added drives

In looking around for answers on "how to copy or move data from one RAID Array to another while preserving ACL's and metadata" most answers I found were a bit vague. I'm hoping my experience will be of help to someone when they go looking for the same information.
There are many methods to copying data from RAID to RAID - this post has some good ideas:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2434030&#2434030
This is how I ended up moving my set of data for an XRAID attached to a G5 xserve running 10.4.7
I have previously used ditto on other servers to move the data but ended up having to re-enable all my sharepoints afterwards which was a huge pain. This time I tried rsync (failed) and then asr.
I first ran rsync -aEv from the first volume over to the next volume but got a lot of "file has vanished" errors - I found this explanation:
http://listserv.cuny.edu/Scripts/wa.exe?A2=ind0607&L=macenterprise&T=0&O=A&P=256 15
I thought I'd give ASR a try before going through ditto which I know will work (problem being having to re-share everything). Don't get me wrong, ditto keeps all the file sharing settings but you have to go into the workgroup manager and click the share boxes to get them to be shared again (maybe I missed something when doing it but that's what happened to me last time I had to do this).
I had read that ASR didn't work properly in 10.4.6 here:
http://blog.plasticsfuture.org/2006/04/23/asr-broken-in-1046/
but seeing as 10.4.7 had not really been discussed I figured I'd give it a whirl.
I had roughly 700GB of data to move from a RAID 5 over 250GB drives onto a RAID5 on 500GB drives. First I disabled Filesharing. Then I used asr from the command line:
#asr -source /XRAID1 -target /NewXRAID -erase
I chose to erase the target so I could get block copy going to allow the fastest copy possible. It took about 5 hours - give or take - I wasn't paying much attention to it...
I came back to the finished copy, ejected the smaller volume and re-enabled filesharing. To my dismay nothing appeared to be shared. Workgroup manager was asking me to remove sharepoints and re-add them saying they couldn't be found. I decided not to do that. Instead, I stopped filesharing services and restarted the server. This time I ejected both volumes - opened Disk Utility and mounted the larger XRAID volume by itself. I then started filesharing and IT WORKED! All my sharepoints were there and all the ACL's appeared to be functioning correctly. I've logged in as several different users and everything seems as it should. I also checked alias's I made on a remote desktop machine previous to starting to see if they worked and they do.
Now, having two volumes with identical names can be a problem so to be safe I stopped Filesharing and mounted the smaller drive and re-named it (I'm keeping it as a backup just in case things go to pot when it goes live on Tuesday..). I then restarted the server again, left all drives mounted and started Filesharing again. The correct volume is shared and everything looks good.
So if you need to move all your files from a smaller RAID to a larger one ASR in 10.4.7 seems to do the trick.
Cheers,
Simon

Problem:
Today we have reports that files are missing from the new RAID. Sure enough there are some files that ought to be there that aren't so I'm going to scrap this and go back to the original volume and do a ditto either tonight or on Friday night when I have more time to set the shares straight.
Oh well so much for that.
Simon
The RAID is running the latest firmware and the server is running 10.4.7 on a Dual G5 XSERVE 4gb ram.

I think the new xorg-server is the problem as it isn't supported by this nvidia driver yet.
You could try to install the nouveau driver until nvidia comes with a new version of the 173 branch that supports xorg-server 1.10, see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau for information. As lower-grade options, you might also consider xf86-video-nv and xf86-video-vesa.
Should i uninstall nvidia driver, then install it?
I think thats the easy way yes, else you have to blacklist the nvidia kernel module.. check the wiki link of nouveau for details.

  • Adding Drives to a RAID 5

I have a XSERVE RAID with 4 250GB drives configured as a RAID 5. We're starting to get low on space so I'd like to expand the capacity by adding some drives.
Is there a specific number of drives I need to add or can I add 1, 2 or 3 drives as long as they're on the same controller?
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    This is incorrect.
The Xserve RAID does not ship with any file system on it whatsoever. It is just disks, set up in a RAID configuration that you specify.
You can format the RAID volume as HFS+ if you connect it to a Mac. You can format it with NTFS if you connect it to a Windows machine. Or ZFS on a Solaris box, etc.
What you CANNOT easily do is grow a volume. Period.
Buy the RAID with 7 drives, or with 14 drives. If you buy a "2 TB" one (what is this -- 4x500 GB drives? Recall that is about 1.3 TB of usable space in RAID 5)... plan on reformatting if you add 3 drives later. Plan on it. I mean it: plan on it. Growing the RAID is complicated and unless you want to set up a concatenated RAID set, it's what you MUST do to grow the volume.
Again, my advice could not be clearer (search back as well, I've stated this many, many times): Buy the RAID with 7 drives, or with 14, and NEVER plan on growing the RAID by adding drives WITHOUT reformatting. Period.

  • Upgrading hard drive... need help on how to prepare current CS6 for reinstall on new hard drive

I'm about to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one and will need to reinstall my CS6 Web/Design Suite... I've seen many people having issues with activation and licensing after they reformat their computers or buy a new one and try to install the programs on the new "system". How should I go about preparing my Adobe software on the current hard drive so I won't have any issues resintalling on the new hard drive? I will be installing CS6 Student/Teacher version on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit...
    Thanks for the help!

    Thanks!
I wondered if that was all I needed, but when I built my new system and installed PS CS4 I kept getting errors. So, I went back to the old system and deactivated it and still got errors. Uninstalled it deactivated and still got errors on the new system. When I talked to Adobe they just kept telling me the key was invalid (even though I had been running that same program and key for the last 4 years without problems lol) and it was not a burnt copy or pirated. I had the orginal box with the original DVD case and serial number on the case... A friend of mine had upgraded their rig and went to a Suite so he gave me his CS4. But, needless to say (as it is said all over these forums apparently) Adobe was of no help at all so I had to buy a new version. I'm not looking to go through all of that BS again, haha.
So as long as I deactivate the Suite (or do I need to deactivate each program separately?) I should be able to reformat (or upgrade hard drives) and reinstall CS6 as many times as I want? (I usually do a reformat like once a year to keep my computers clean and free of junk that may have been downloaded by other household members...)

Unless it has worked since the upgrading, I believe you should uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • 0xc0000135 while adding driver packages to boot image

Hi, I am currently having issues adding driver packages to the boot image.
Currently running Server 2008 R2 and have MDT 2013 installed.
Tried searching for the error but no luck. No matter if I choose the specific driver I want to add or if I just start from the beginning it just constantly fails. Does anybody have any clue as to what could be causing it to not accept either from the boot image

    Hi,
First make sure you are using the correct version of DISM
    Secondly look at this http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ff8509ec-0ddd-4ad8-9e53-ecf527a80919/dismexe-is-failing-to-add-drivers-to-a-mounted-image-file?forum=w7itproinstall

  • I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity?

I have a 2008 Mac Book Pro partitioned running windows and are running out of drive space. Can I upgrade hard drive for more capacity? I purchased a faster drive initially, but has 200 GB capacity. I am running out of room and would like to upgrade for more space if possible.
    Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You don't need to partition your drive to run Fusion, only if you want to run Bootcamp.
If you have space on your Windows partition, I would suggest you backup your Windows partition, and then, delete the partition using Disk Utility.
You can now restore your virtual machine to a single volume or repartition if you prefer.
I would consider upgrading to a unibody MBP (used, refurbished will do) just to be able to access the HD. Opening the pre-unibody MBP is not something you would want to do.

  • Adding drives, proc upgrade: Power Supply? Heat?

    Hello All,
Thinking of installing a total of 4 Internal Hard Drives, and a dual 1.6ish processor. Wondering if there are any Power Supply and/or heat issues I need to consider.
    Current set-up:
    PM G4 QS 867
    1.5GB RAM
Power Supply is original: AcBel APlPC12..."Total 344W MAX."
Video Card is original AGP GeForce2 MX 32MB VRAM
    Apple 17" Studio Display
    Thinking of adding:
    2 Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 200GB drives in the U-Carrier
2 Hitachi Deskstar SATA 500GB drives, 1 in each of the remaining bottom bays
All controlled via a Projovian "2-Port SATA and ATA133 Dual Connection PCI Host Adapter Card"
and further down the line a dual processor in the 1.6 to 2.0 GHz range.
Intended use is primarily FCP and some Photoshop.
    Any thoughts or warnings?
    Thanks so much,

That should be fine, in regards to power. As for heat, well it could get a little warm in there once you upgrade the CPU. You might want to get a PCI slot exhaust fan once you put the new CPU in there.

  • Upgraded C:drive and can't access old iTunes library

A couple of months ago I upgraded my C:drive. It took me a couple of days to do so. Well within that time period I lost my iTouch (4th gen.) I finally got a new iTouch. Here's my problem, when I re-established my iTunes account, it recognized my old iTouch serial number, so why can't I access my old library? I still have the old C:drive if that is relevant. So how do I retrieve my old iTunes library?

You don't say how you are accessing your old drive, but presumably you have it installed in your PC or you have put it in a usb drive enclosure.
Assuming that you have installed iTunes on the new system drive and you haven't added music yet, what you need to do is to drag the new iTunes folder out of Music onto your desk top. Then copy the iTunes folder from Music on the old drive into Music on the new drive so that it replaces the one you dragged out.
You might need to check the permissions on the iTunes fodler to ensure your account and SYSTEM have full control.
This method assumes you had a default installation of iTunes on the old drive, that is to say all your music files were in the iTunes Media folder. If you had something different, things are more complicated.

  • Upgrade Hard Drives?

    Hi,
I have read quite a few posts and also talked to Apple Support - but I am still confused.
I have a MAC PRO purchased in October, 2007. It has a 500 GB hard drive in bay #1 for all my programs and a little data. I also have 3 hard drives in bays #2, #3 and #4. These three are 750GB each and are used only for data files. My operating system is MAC OS X version 10.4.11.
My question is, can I replace the 3 x 750GB drives used for data storage with either 1.5TB or 2.0 TB drives? (I understand that the WD 2.0TB drive is slower).
Or, is there some sort of max amount of internal storage allowed based on motherboard or something?
MAC Support said they could only say go to 3 x 1TB drives. But according to some posts, I think some people have tried larger drives OK.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

I too am looking to upgrade the hard drive in my Mac Pro. I currently have the original 250GB drive that came with my machine as my primary (for apps and user account stuff), a secondary 250GB drive (for my actual work), and a 500GB drive in bay 3 that I use as a Time Machine drive.
I was thinking about adding a 1TB drive as my primary and move the 250GB out as a work backup/catch all/scratch disk. I'm looking at the WD Black 1TB, but I'm concerned about reliability. Are 1TB drives a lot more reliable now than when they first came out? If reliability is more important to me, should I just stick with a smaller 500GB drive since I probably don't really need a terabyte for my primary?

When I go to Get Info on it, my user name is not listed in the permissions list. There's System, Wheel (whatever that is?) and Everyone. I tried adding a myself or even a new user but nothing happens.
Thankfully I can save to existing folders on my hard drive, which is stange. When I get info on these folders, my user name is listed with read and write permissions - all is normal.
Is this some fiunky new Lion feature, or has something messed up during installation? Can I fix it?
    thanks

This seems to be a feature - despite the permissions indicating that I can read and write to the root folder of the start-up disk, I have to authenticate before copying files to it.
I 'restored' the internal HD to an external drive as a backup using Disk Utility, and that too was locked - it booted-up OK and worked exactly like the internal HD when it was the start-up disk. However, booting-up gain from the internal HD I found that I could not copy any files to the external disk at all, not even to the folders in my cloned home folder - I don't even get the option to authenticate.
When I replaced the backup using Carbon Copy Cloner the external drive was not locked and I can copy other back-up files to the disk.
The locking seems to be a feature of the install/restore. I would guess that, as with hiding the ~\Library folder, this is designed to protect critical folders from foolish acts, but it seems like overkill to me.

  • 13" Macbook pro random freezing after upgrading hard drive.

    i have a 2010 mbp 13" 2.4
I upgraded the hhd from the 250 to a 320 5400 RPM drive i cleared the cache did a clean install of osx 10.6 grabbed all the updates and then rolled my time machine to restore all my files.
But now it randomly freezes for about 4-7 seconds. It's extremely annoying and i can't figure out why. Short of a clean install any ideas on what might fix this?
    Thanks

The AHT does test the graphics chips. Run the extended version and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. Also, there may be a crash log in Console. Try to run something processor intensive so the Mac freezes, and then run the AHT. Heat could be a factor.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and bring in your Mac for evaluation. They would probably have a more comprehensive hardware test they could run. If you get any error codes, bring those along.
It sounds like you could have some sort of hardware problem here. Since you are under warranty, it might be time to let Apple diagnose and fix it. It sounds like you may have had video issues during the first week of ownership with the original hard drive, and these may actually be independent of the hard drive.
    Good luck!

This is from my invoice, is there a way to get system info off my notebook that I can copy/paste? (unlike Win system info)
My harddrive has been full for a while and I'm looking to get a 1 tb drive and possibly SSD  I'm also continually running out of memory as I have a gazillion browsers, tabs and apps open.
    Just looked on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-7200RPM-Mobile/dp/B0097LG9U8/
I read about adding SSD and should mention that my DVD player doesn't work anymore, so maybe I can put something else in it.   I also don't use wireless G3 etc, just regular wireless DSL.
    Greatly appreciate suggestions, thanks!

If you don't need a WWAN card I would put a mSata SSD and install the OS and programs there. Then replace your 500GB with a 1TB drive.
Another option would be to replace the HDD with a standard 2.5" SSD, remove the optical drive, replace it with a HDD caddy and put a 1TB HDD there
OR... You put the mSata SDD in the WWAN slot, replace your 500GB with a 1TB drive AND add another 1TB with the caddy instead of the optical drive
Plenty of options with a T520, it's a great ThinkPad

  • Upgrading Hard Drive- Which type of SATA?

Ok, hard drive crashed last night.. 13 mos old. Seems like lots of others are having a similar problem. At any rate, I am going to upgrade, and I noticed that I have to upgrade with a 2.5" SATA connection. When I am surfing for these, I am seeing SATA, SATA-150, and I thought I saw a SATA-300. What is the difference and does it matter which one? I saw a big selection of SATA-150, but only a very few SATA. Not sure if this is one and the same?

In theory the newer sata-150 should be backward compatible with the older sata.
the diffrence between the two is its speed, newer sata has faster speed vs the older one.
however, there has been feedbacks that newer sata is not compatible with g5 and other incompatibilities. On the other hand... as of this time i think they should already fix those incompatibilities so in my opinion all those you saw can be used on your macbook.
