Xserve Intel 10.5.6  CPU Blue Status lights (every other one) always on

I have an Intel Xserve 2 x 2.8 Quad Core processors, 2 GB ram. On the front panel the 2 rows of blue lights are on; every other light is on [o.o.o.o.] and the system is acting erratic. The symptom is that while logged directly into it is will apparently hang for several minutes then run for a few minutes then hang. Remotely, this is our web server, the system will be reachable, then unreachable.
I can not connect with System Monitor but I can do a command line "top -o cpu" and the cpu is 95%+ idle with 1224 MB of free memory.
I do have automount running, though I am not serving any mount points out. I connect to another server for user home directories.
Any help would be appreciated. I called Apple Support but they had no explanation for the lights or the slowness. At the time they could connect to the Web server

We scheduled the downtime and then updated the box to 10.5.7 and the blue lights went out and the system stabilized. I didn't run the hardware diag.
Thanks for your input

  • I have a blue status lights on my network extnder and when I dial

I have attached the GPS antenna and placed it by the window.  All lights are blue = "normal" but still get spotty service.  1 to 2 bars.

The service that a NE works with comes from your internet connection.  All that the window is good for is finding your GPS coordinates for 911 calls as required by the law.  What kind of an internet connection to you have to work with?  Try stopping by speedtest.net and running a few tests and report your average scores.

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Brand new Intel Xserve Intel - blinking yellow light

    Hello:
I was wondering if anyone had any information on this.
I am the design/production/IT manager at a publishing company where we just purchased a brand new Xserve Intel. It is a quad core 2.8 GHz model with 2GB of RAM, 80GB internal hard drive, and a few external FireWire 800 drives attached. It's been a truly great machine so far, but there are a couple of problems we've been trying to figure out since we got it out of the box.
Upon powering the unit up for the first time until present, the yellow system identifier light on the front panel of the machine has been blinking nonstop. It's following a pattern of blinking very fast 3 or 4 times, followed by a 1 to 2 second period of being off. The yellow indicator light on the right hand rear side of the machine has also been blinking with the one on the front panel in tandem. The operations manual indicated a few possible problems, including the enclosure lock being on or being in an alarm condition, both of which have been ruled out. Pushing the button makes the light blink very rapidly also, but with no pause in between.
Our IT consultant from corporate headquarters was recently at our office and recommended that I call AppleCare to ensure that there were no hardware issues with the machine. The technician I spoke with stated that the blinking yellow light problem can be any one of about 4 dozen different things but as long as we were all able to connect to it and haven't had anything strange happen with our files, we should be good to go. At that time, our files were still migrating from the old Xserve to the new one, but even with that being over, the lights still continue to flash.
The other problem we've been experiencing is while in the Server Monitor utility. On the main information screen, the server name is blank, the IP address is showing up correctly, and the status summary reads "failure to connect." The log is set to update every ten seconds and keeps spitting out a "failed to contact server" error.
Everything is appearing and working correctly in the Server Admin utility.
Any information regarding either of these problems would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi everyone and thanks for all the info...I'll check all this out a bit later on today and get back to you.
Just a couple of other general questions I had for now...I've done a little investigating and noticed a couple of things, I'm wondering now if I'd be better off just tearing this thing down and reconfiguring it...unfortunately the person that was sent out here from corporate didn't do the best job of setting anything up!
    1. I noticed that we are hooked up to the second ethernet port vs. the first one. A couple of days back when I switched it to the first port, no one was able to sign or access the server.
    2. I recall that the new Xserve kept crashing in the middle of the OS software update (not sure which build or version it was, but it was the version that was just over 900 megabytes). The original operating system needed to be installed a total of three times as a result of this, just to get us to the point where we're at now.
    3. It appears that the LOM is the first thing that needs to be configured for everything else to run smoothly (although I could be wrong?)
    4. The biggest problem we encountered was migrating our files from the old Xserve to the new. We have a base configuration Xserve and our drive setup is a 750 GB Lacie D2 Quadra that's connected via FireWire 800. The old drive the files were on was on the verge of death and we were fortunate enough to get all the files moved to it before it finally conked out. Permissions on about 75% of the files were wrecked and the only complete fix was running a third party software application called Passenger (http://www.macinmind.com/?pid=2&progid=1&subpid=1). This was the only thing that worked in its entirety to get the permissions fixed.
    Thanks again for the info!

  • Running Windows 2003 Server on Xserve Intel with BootCamp?

    Well...
This sounds like awfully bad idea, but one of our clients needs to run Windows 2003 Server for a certain project in their organisation. Fundings for the new hardware is available. Windows-compatible hardware!
The idea here is to get fundings for a new Xserve, run it with Windows 2003 Server in the project and then keep the delicious hardware for free when the project ends. A PC-server would be thrown out of a window in this 100% Mac-centric department.
Windows 2003 Server runs smoothly on a MacPro with Boot Camp and Parallels Desktop. What about the XServe Intel?

    Schuckert-
    Greetings.
Are you in a position to test the configuration for a while? If so then I vote do it. If not, you could buy a copy of OSX Server and install it on a Mac Pro and try running your software on the XServe platform.
However, depending on your relationship with this client, I would have them sign a release based upon the beta-ness of the software.
A lot of us here are not in a position to give such things a try-just yet. Too busy trying to make things transition smoothly on the accepted configurations.
Although I will say that I suppose a client will eventually pose the question to me (:>)
    Luck-

    Hello guys.
Im having a some problems with my CPU.
Since my english is not fluent and im not really a PC Engineer ill try to explain the problem best i can.
Im using MSI Control Center and i think i have some issues with my motherboard / processor.
Frequencies of CPU are very oscilating, they ussualy work at x16.0 but is that good? I mean i see they can work at up to x27.0 so should i maybe set them at x26.0?
If i should do that, can u tell me how? I dont want to hurt my system by doing something that i dont really understand.
Also ive noticed that my iGPU is always at 0 MHz. I dont know what is iGPU exactly but i think this cant be good.
If anyone can tell me how can i make my CPU steady in few simple steps and how to enable iGPU please.
I would be very greatefull to you!
    Thanks in advance.

What motherboard do you have? What other parts are in your system? So far all you tell us is what CPU you have and nothing else.  Do you have a separate graphics card or are you using IGPU (Integrated Graphics Processing Unit)? CPU speed will vary depending on load, light load slower speed, heavy load higher speed. If you have a discrete video card then IGPU will be zero.
Since that is a LGA1156 CPU this is posted in the wrong section of the forum, it should be in Intel iX section.
Ive also forgot to mention that im getting Black Screen Bug while playing some games, League of Legends exactly. And i think its somehow related to my CPU, but im not sure.
After i start the game, whole screen goes black and im unable to do anything about it. I cant even ALT+TAB it so i ca see my CPU usage..completely cut off from my PC while this is hapening.
It does hapen always, each time i start the game and it lasts for about 1-2 minutes. Screen is blinking in black like its trying to refresh itself.

  • Install blue status bar went gray, but all is OK...

So I finally got around to biting the bullet and I installed iTunes 8.0.2 on our MBP (still haven't done it on the G4 which has all our music in the Library.)
During installation, I watched the blue status bar (I don't know its real name - that liquidy turquoise thing that moves left to right to tell you how much is done). Early on in the installation it went from blue to a pale gray.
Installation finished successfully and a Software Update shows that no new software is needed. Get Info shows the correct version and I can open iTunes 8.0.2 just fine.
I did have a permission repair report from after the install of
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Determining correct file permissions.
Permissions differ on ./System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist, should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x
Owner and group corrected on ./System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist
    Permissions corrected on ./System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist
    Permissions repair complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
Should I be worried about the blue to grey bar?
    Thanks from the ever cautious
    Mrs H

"...Early on in the installation it went from blue to a pale gray..."
Quite possibly you may have clicked off the installer box onto the finder desktop and the box is now deselected. Clicking back onto the box would have gotten the color back. However as hpr3 noted, you're OK.

  • MacOS X San Array support on Xserve Intel

    Hello,
We have a datacenter with several XServe Intel connected to XServe RAID using FC (for Apple file sharing services). A part of the datacenter is migrating to VMware ESX. The XServe RAID cannot be used under VMware (no official support and performance problems) and we cannot have two SAN array.
Is it possible to connect the Apple XServe (with MacOS X 10.4 or 10.5) using FC to anything else than an XServe RAID ? For example an EMC Clariion ?

I successfully connected an Intel Xserve to an EMC Clariion X600 array this past summer for testing purposes. Just make sure you get the UUID of the SAN from the System Admin of the SAN array. Similarly you'll have to give the SAN admin the UUID for your Fibre Channel interface. The UUID is like an Ethernet MAC address and allows you to see the SAN array over the Fibre Channel connection. We also had to get an SFP adapter for our Fibre Channel card as our SAN switch was all fiber optic connections.
Once we configured both ends of the Fibre Channel and the System Admin had allocated a 100GB slice to my UUID, I initially couldn't see the SAN. After about a day of delays and double-checking the SAN admin rebooted the SAN, I rebooted the Xserve and the 100GB slice magically showed up in Disk Utility as unformatted storage directly attached to the machine. I don't know if there's any trick to configuring the Clariion box. I know they made no adjustments or changes to get the Mac to work on the SAN side. The system admin of the SAN kept saying, "We've never done this before,... You have to install the drivers for the SAN,... what interface is the Mac using?...Who manufactures it?...Do they provide any drivers whatsoever for the Mac?...
Also our on-campus Mac re-seller directed me to alienRAID.org

There's some entries there on hooking Apple Fibre Channel to Clariion hardware:

I would like to know if I can install Microsoft Server 2008 Enterprise or Standard Edition on a Laptop having Intel Pentium Quad-Core CPU N3530 (2.16 GHz). Currently it has Window 8. I do not need Windows 8 and would like to install Microsoft Server 2008
    Enterprise or Standard Edition.
    Will it work ?
    Thnx.

    Hi Zahid-I,
We support the Windows server system install on the certified hardware you can search ask your hardware vendor for exactly supported system or you can search the Windows Server
Catalog to found whether your hardware certified by server 2008, personal experience is most of the laptop not supported the server system.
    Windows Server Catalog
    http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/results.aspx?bCatId=1283&avc=10
Personal experience is if our PC hardware meet the minimum require of server system we can install it for test lab.

    Hi:
I am looking at the BIOS setup guide for your PC series and it shows there is a VT setting under the device configuration menu for "select models." See Chapter 3 page 6.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01662442.pdf
Here are the specs on the T6500 processor. It does not support VT, which is why the VT setting cannot be enabled.

  • Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 CPU, 2.83GHz

    Hi!
I dream of buying the new processor called Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 CPU, 2.83GHz.
Is it to suit my motherboard - Marketing Name: P35 Neo2-FR/FIR; MSI Model: MS-7345?
Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 CPU, 2.83GHz has 45nm. My motherboard can receive 45nm or 65nm only?
If so, do I need to upgrade the BIOS?
If there is no upgrade from the BIOS. It means that I can only put into Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 CPU, 2.83GHz to the motherboard.
    Regards Lillemester :-)

Yes it can, check CPU Support page:

the same procesor is workings with no problem on his old board!
is there any solution that you can suggest? as i sad all other 865 chipsets  support celleron cpus! :(

  • Can I run Lightroom on a PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU?

The specs for Lightroom state that you need a Pentium 4 processor.  My PC has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU @ 2.2Ghz.  Is this sufficient?
    Thanks.

    Hi vc10,
You can install Lightroom on Core 2  Duo Processor.
P4 processor is the minimum system requirement for it.

  • Intel CPUID says my CPU is overclocked?

    Hi there
I have the MSI 875P m/b and the Intel 2.40C Ghz CPU.  My motherboard is not overclocked (at least not as far as I know, the default settings are enabled), but I have just launched the Intel Processor ID Utility v5.6 and I get the following:
    Reported Frequency: 2.43Ghz / System Bus: 811Mhz
    Expected Frequency: 2.40Ghz / System Bus: 800Mhz
Underneath this there is a yellow exclamation mark and it says "overclocked" and also has an "advisory".
I know that the speeds are not much higher than the expected frequncies but for the time being and because the parts are new, I would like my system and especially the processor to run at the normal speed.  Can someone tell me exactly what are the default settings that I should have so that the processor and system bus run at their "expected frequencies", and also what I need to adjust and where in the BIOS are these settings are please?
If you would like to know more before you advise me, please ask me what settings you would like me to quote.
BTW:  CPUID v1.19b from CPUID.COM also reports the same frequencies.
    Regards

    Hi to all
DOS:  I am quite prepared to believe your comment:
"You've been around here long enough to know that all of the 865 and 875 motherboards are slightly overclocked at the standard "Slow" performance", and I guess that this "must" be the case here because my PAT is 100% set to the default setting of "SLOW" and I do not have "High Performance Defaults" enabled and after enabling "BIOS Setup default settings" and rebooting, the CPUID frequencies were still the same as I first reported:
    Reported Frequency: 2.43Ghz / System Bus: 811Mhz
    Expected Frequency: 2.40Ghz / System Bus: 800Mhz
So, with "Performance Mode" now in the BIOS since BIOS v1.7 and left the default of "SLOW", all Intel CPU's must be slightly overclocked on this and similar boards?
REILLY875:  Thanks for your response and yes your right, I am not that bothered at the difference in FSB of 811Mhz, as it's hardly worth thinking about but I was just wondering why when I had all the defaults chosen, my FSB and CPU were, according to INTEL CPUID, overclocked; especially as you mentioned your friends Intel 875-PBZ was also showing overclocked.
Assaf:  As I stated above, my BIOS settings are default, so I guess that my FSB/CPU frequencies must be normal for this board and, apparently the 875 Intel board.
So, as I don't want to play around with the FSB clock settings, I guess I'll just leave well alone.
Many thanks for all of your comments.
    Regards
