Yet Another MBP Airport Reception issue

My situation:
MBP 2.0 CoreDuo, 10.4.8, all updates and firmware applied.
On the same table, six feet (no obstructions) from an Apple Airport Express (not running Airtunes) and with no security enabled, the MBP will go from 0-2 bars while a MacBook and another MBP, each have 3-4 bars.
I have created a new user and tested, I have deleted the System Config folder, I have deleted and recreated the network prefs, checked for other wireless AP's, changed channels, and enabled/disabled interference robustness, with no effect.
The wild fluctuations are driving me crazy and I am really hoping this isn't a send in your MBP kind of problem.

I am in the same boat and I was able to circumvent this by setting the Linksys WRT54GS Router to 802.11b Only mode.
If I have it on a mixed mode or 802.11g Only mode then I get a weak and unstable signal. Setting it on 802.11b Only mode gives me full coverage around the house and excellent steady signal.
I know that I will not be getting the optimum speeds out of this setting however it beats router crashes and frequent disconnects due to weak signal.
Is there anything that I can do to get the 802.11g back with stable and strong signal? I have tried just about everything mentioned in these forums.
Do I just get another router? Is there a router out there working with a Macbook Pro Intel Core duo running on 10.4.8? AND using a Mixed mode or 802.11g Only mode? I am interested in hearing from you.

  • Yet another post about speed issues !

So had my infinity for more than 10wks now. Have been told time n time again by customer service, sales and technical help that I should get between 67 and 80 meg but after countless phone calls and apparent 'tweaks' at the exchange I'm still only getting 46 at best. Openreach engineer I spoke to in the street said it leaves the box in the street ( 2 short streets away ) at 80 so surely the problem is been m between the box and my house! Why don't they send someone to check this. One of the tech help dept even told me my line can only support 40meg and that I have been miss led over the speed! ! Though others have said I can get the higher speed. Another call back promised for today did not receive any call!
Think I'll be joining virgin when this year's contact is up, 10 months to go and counting, unless I can get out sooner for miss selling.

If it's a similar problem would you not expect a similar answer! The reason you are asked to perform speed tests etc is to try and establish where the problem may be.
As most people can not be bothered or do not search the forum before posting and perhaps finding the answer it is necessary for those people who give up their own time to try and help, to post the same thing time and time again.
I just hope that if you do have a problem it is not the same as somebody else may have had since you don't seem to want a cut and paste answer.

  • Yet another 3G battery charge issue/question

    All...
Lately my iPhone 3G is draining it's battery much quicker than it had previously. It will not last a full day. Even with no Safari, games, music, etc. Also, when I charge it, it gets hot, more than usual.
Not sure, but I think this all started when I let the battery completely drain. I partially charged then the battery completely drained again.
I've reset shut the phone off then back on with no improvement. I've had the phone for less than a year. Apple replaced my 1st 3G with this phone due to another issue.
I'm going to let the battery completely drain then will completely charge to see if that helps. Otherwise, any ideas?

I am having the same problem. It barely makes it through 12 hours now, when previously I was used to about 36 hours. It has only started doing it recently, but I'm not entirely sure what I've done to provoke it.
Have seen similar issues in other threads, with people suggesting restoring/updating etc. I am yet to try this so will give it a go, but not convinced it will help.

  • Yet another (different?) battery issue

I have two batteries for my Powerbook, one I keep as a spare and which has only been used about half a dozen times.
Over recent months I have noticed that the original battery (and the unused one) seemed to take an increasingly long amount of time to recharge, but in the past few days it won't seem to recharge at all. The percentage of remaining charge on both batteries will only go down, with one currently at 25% and the other at 37% and no matter which battery I have installed, whenever I click on the battery menu, in the first line it says "10:00 until full"
I've tried all the suggestions that I've seen in responses to other battery issues, including resetting the PRAM both with the four key shortcut and using open firmware and reset-nvram and reset-all. I've also tried resetting the PMU by holding down the power key, until the long bleep and I've just tried the Powerbook G4 Battery Updater, but with both batteries I get the following message "Your battery was not updated. Make sure you have a battery properly installed and then try to update your battery again. Be sure to complete the update process for this battery before starting the update of another battery"
The information in the system profiler for each battery is as follows:
    Original battery -
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 861
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3508
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 110
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 10
    Voltage (mV): 11320
    Relatively new battery -
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1621
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4381
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 3
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 10
    Voltage (mV): 11331
I notice there is a massive difference in the "Cycle Count" for the two batteries (110 and 3) although I haven't got a clue what this means.
Any advice or suggestions would be most welcome, as at present I am worried that eventually I will have run both batteries down and there will be no point in me purchasing a new one if my laptop cannot charge it for some reason.
As ever my utmost thanks in advance to anyone who takes the trouble to get back to me
    Kind Regards
    Bernard
PS. the charger info in System Profiler is as follows
    AC Charger Information:
    AC Charger (Watts): 50
    Connected: Yes
    Charging: Yes
    Message was edited by: tdogb

Thanks a million for getting back to me Louie
The ring on the power socket is orange, suggesting that it is charging. However I didn't noticed the 50watts in my System Profiler details for the AC Charger. My Power Supply says that it is a 65w one with the correct model no. for this Powerbook (I think it says A1021 on it but I don't trust my eyesight at this time of night)
Both batteries do appear to be charging but incredibly slowly. For example I have been trying to charge up the battery all week and I had it up to 33% at one stage, before I neglected to plug the power chord in when I turned it on and it slipped back down to 22%. Three days later with it plugged into the power constantly (with me using the computer only during the day and putting it to sleep at night - should it charge when in sleep mode?), it's only crept back up to 30% again.
This battery could be knackered but I hardly have used my spare battery and even that won't seem to charge any quicker
I am also pretty certain that this incredibly slow charging is a recent problem, as I've had that power supply for some time (a year maybe) and I am sure that in the past the batteries have charged up at a more normal rate.
My power supply socket got a little knock recently when I tripped over the cable (as seems to be a common problem on the old non-magnetic sockets) and since then, with the connection not being nearly so snug, it happens quite frequently that I wake the computer from sleep and only realise that the plug is slightly out of the socket when the warning comes up that the laptop will put itself to sleep because the battery is low.
As a result, where previously I was always using the power supply with the battery fully charged and the light on the ring usually green, these days it seems to be permanently orange because I keep running the battery down and in recent weeks it will not seem to charge up because it takes so much time
I am guessing that I must've bought a moody power supply (I guess cheap is cheap, as they say) but I don't think it's the source of my problem because the issue has only manifested itself recently
Many thanks as always for taking the trouble to get back to me
    Best Regards
    Bernard

  • Yet another cant send mail issue

Hi, I am going nuts here!! At home I have Comcast and my dotmac account works via port 25 no set up, perfect. I am now in another house with comcast and I cannot send anything. I telnetted port 25, nothing shows, so I contacted Comcast and they sent me this url http://www.comcast.net/help/faq/index.jsp?faq=EmailMail_(Mac)17798 it seems to have ALL the answers, but I am just going round in circles.
Assume I want to set up for traveling purposes. I set up a new account POP, used dotmac info for incoming mail/server info and for outgoing server I have smtp.comcast.net, I use the 465 port with ssl, and for the password authentication I use my dotmac name and password.
In advanced I use 995 port and ssl.
This info seems good to go, but when I try to send I always get the dialog box The SMTP server “smtp.comcast.net” rejected the password for user “dotmac account”.
I just cant work out why it wont accept the password. Should I have some extra comcast info?
this is madness, but oh well, is there an answer out there

Checking Comcast's website, Comcast's SMTP server settings should be as follows:
    SMTP Server: smtp.comcast.net
    Server Port: 587
Use SSL: Off or not selected.
    Authentication: Password
User Name: The portion of your Comcast email address in front of the @ sign only.
Password: Your Comcast account password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.
.Mac's SMTP server settings should be as follows:
    SMTP Server: smtp.mac.com
    Server Port: 587
Use SSL: On/Selected but isn't required.
    Authentication: Password
User Name: The portion of your .Mac email address in front of the @ sign only.
Password: Your .Mac account password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.
These settings will not guarantee being able to send messages with either account and SMTP server when traveling and not connected to the internet with Comcast. This is determined by the ISP being used to connect to the internet since all ISPs have restrictions on using an SMTP server that is outside of their network or not provided by the ISP.
You can use .Mac's authenticated SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account only but you can use Comcast's authenticated SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account when connected to the internet with Comcast.

  • Yet another iPhone 4 camera issue - flash positioned too close to camera!

I have noticed photos taken with flash leave a bloom of white light on the left side of the photos. Seems to be the glare due to the fact the flash is positioned so close to the lens! There are no 'divider' between the 2.
Usually on other phones, the lens and flash are hollow to minimise this effect, on the iPhone 4 both are on a flat surface and 2mm away from each other which exaggerate the problem even more!
This problem seems to resemble similar issue with the N97.
Why didn't Apple put the flash away from the lens to avoid this issue?

I thought this was a problem when I first used my flash, but realized I had my finger too close to the flash and it was reflecting off of my finger.. Just make sure the light is not bouncing off of something in the environment that is close to the LED i.e. fingers..

  • Yet another W540 external display issue...

I don't think I've seen this one here yet.
I occasionally use my W540 with an external monitor on the VGA port. When I reboot (or just boot) the computer while the display is plugged in, it starts up fine until it gets to the login screen. From there, my laptop's display (primary) is a solid gray (that is my "background" color for the Windows 8 Metro interface), and my external display is black, as it should be. I can do whatever I want, except that I cannot see anything on the laptop screen.
After logging in, the laptop is still grayed out, but the external display shows the extended desktop that it usually does. When I right click on that desktop and select screen resolution, my "ThinkPad Dislplay 1920 x 1080" is replaced with a "Mobile PC Display".  The resolution on both displays is locked at 1440 x 900 (the native resolution of my external display). All of these symptoms occur in the Intel HD Graphics configuration, as well.
Only when I restart my computer and unplug the external monitor before the Lenovo splash loads does the computer return to its normal state. This did NOT happen on my old T510 with the same display, so something is going wrong here.
I have the latest drivers installed, as this is a three-day-old clean install of Windows 8.1.

  • Yet another DEAD Airport base station !

    Hello to all !
1/ Let's keep this faulty or dead APX (Airport express) posts on top of this forum so other affected users may find them more easily when looking for a diagnosis .
2/ Important !!! Always make screen shots of your posts. If your posts are erased by Apple sent them to me ([email protected]) I may post them on my website (I fortunately have almost unlimited bandwidth and space)
3/ Also, doing so, Apple will no longer be able to erase or lock post on this topic without getting ridiculed.
Always post a copy of your post / reports on the Macbidouille.com / Hadmac.com forums.
    a) http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?showtopic=192517&st=0
    b) http://forum.hardmac.com/index.php?showtopic=167
I'm sure it's a growing problem for Apple, otherwise they wouldn't have erased / locked some posts about this APX sudden death.
Unfortunately many users with dead APX may not read Macbidouille.com / Hadmac.com and so may not be aware of the problem, they may have thought they had bad luck. This means that the already large amount of over 700 cases (counted by Macbidouille.com / Hadmac.com) probably represent only a fraction of the real amount of APX sudden death cases...
Spread the word around you so more people become aware of this !
I think it's really about time to contact consumer protection organizations as well as the mainstream medias and our own lawyers.
If we all fight together, Apple will be forced to recognize the problem and apply an extended warranty to Airport express.

    b) http://forum.hardmac.com/index.php?showtopic=167

  • Yet another Z3C with WIFI issues...

Hello All, So I am not a newbie in the world of smartphones and today I have an issue with my Z3C which is affecting me since I bought it, not long time ago. The wifi, mostly every 10/20 minutes just stop to work. It show activity in Upload but no activity in Download. Which make me mad as I have a 50mbps internet connection that works perfectly with a Moto X, an Alcatel Idol 2 Mini S, a pletora of Laptops and Smart Devices, and one HP VoiceTab 6. All speedtests show me about 40/48mbps download speed, only the Z3C Download speed arrive to 30/40mbps then drastically goes to 2/5mbps 'til it drops to 0. Now, I tried everything, reset, factory reset, safe mode, different routers (I have 2 home and tried in different restaurants and offices), different sims, no sims at all.. it just don't work. So what I did is to use just LTE that it's of course fast and problemsless BUT why do I have to make happy my carrier when I can use the WIFI of home and office? Is Sony going to pay my plan?

    Thommo wrote:
I'm not saying this is the reason but some routers have security and when performing speed tests get sent data which maybe deemed as Malware then the router will block connectivityAgree with you, I already tried it. Disabled firewall, security in general.. I made my routers also open gardens! Imagine... The curious part of that is the other devices works perfectly except the Z3C so cannot be the router or a security setting getting crazy with the Z3C and not with Moto X, Alcatel.. HP, Toshiba.. Samsung... and no, I don't want to think about racism and hate of dLink and Arris (Motorola) against Sony! No no..

  • Yet another 8.1.1 issue

I was uploading some voice memos, which went ok, but then I tried converting them to mp3 form to save space (I've done this weekly for a couple of years with recordings from an open mic, using an Alesis iMultiMix USB audio mixer). The first couple of memos converted, but the third said "can't be read" and the fourth just hung on "incomplete."
Now I can't get iTunes to run at all. Instant beachball, and a force quit says it's not responding. I downloaded 8.1.1 again; same result. iTunes is effectively totally disabled now.
From the other threads here, it seems that 8.1.1 was a step backwards.

  • Yet another 10.4.9 issue, maybe a little different

I just got my Macbook back from the genius bar friday replacing a bad hard drive, so I'm starting fresh.
I try to install the Photoshop CS3 Beta, and it won't install because the OSX version is 10.4.6 on the hard drive install from the Mac store. This is literally the first add on to the fresh drive. There's no critical data added back to the drive from my backup external drive.
So, I try to upgrade yesterday, and 10.4.9 is on the dock. It times out several times before finally making a complete download. I restart per instructions and I now have a blank grey screen, no icons, although the computer does try to restart itself every Ten minutes or so from that screen.
Unfortunately, I shut it down and tried restart running disc warrior, but that did not work (same grey screen) and now I cannot eject the cd.
    Questions:
    1) Is there some way to eject a CD from the drive in these circumstances that I am missing? I am thinking there must be a simple workout that I am too cloddish to do the right search for.
    2) Is there some way I can just reformat the disc and start fresh with my own discs that came with the Macbook originally? I literally have nothing on the new disc because I never got that far.
I have an appointment with the genius bar Monday, but need to get some remote work today (or not, as the case may be) away from the desktop.

  • Yet another MBP I'm ready to destroy!

So some may have seen the question I posted earlier this week regarding upgrades for RAM. Well I ordered the ram and i'm waiting for it to come in. In the meantime I'm ready to completely destroy this piece of crap laptop I have. Here's the backstory: my old laptop the mid2010 (see products at the bottom of the screen) crashed...so i had to get a new one. No big deal, i was ready to upgrade to the retina display and this gave me an excuse, only problem is that i'm going to need to get the documents, media, etc off the old laptop. I go to apple and build my laptop, completely top of the line...only to find out they don't deliver to APO addresses, i'm currently in afghanistan. So I look to have it shipped through a delivery service like apobox,com..no luck because lithium batteries cannot be shipped through usps to an apo address. Then I figure i'll wait to go to the FOB and get one at aafes, two weeks later (two weeks of the most boring days you could ever imagine) i get there only to find out they have the mid2012 low spec 13 and 15" nonretina display models. I was livid becuase the specs were still worse than my mid2010 that i upgraded. So out of desperation I buy the laptop.
I get back to our camp and start using it, immediately i notice it takes longer to do things: boot up, open apps, etc. I chalk it up to the lower specs after all it wasn't too bad, maybe waiting 15 seconds for an app to open instead of 5. It continues to get worse, to the point that after every mouse click i get a spinning wheel. Not to mention the problem is magnified by the sims 3 crashing all the time. yesterday morining i woke up to no music playing through itunes (i always play music while i sleep) i wake the computer up only for it to eventually crash after 15 minutes of being unresponsive. Without going through every detail basically the computer freezes ALL the time, if i make  a click it stops...literally. I've had this computer a month exactly and this is not what i'm expecting from apple. I could have spent the same (or less) on a pc with MUCH better specs.
Basically, my question is (after all that ranting): does anyone have any suggestions for fixing my computer (that doesn't involve sending back to apple or using the internet becuase we have no personal internet)?
    Thank you all in advance!

i was about two seconds from doing that...literally, then i smoked a cigarette and thought of how reasonable apple has been to me throughout the years. so i chatted with the sales customer service rep and they reminded me that i had a year of coverage without applecare (which i failed to buy becuase i wouldn't be able to register it anyway). not to mention seeing the new imacs set my tongue to wagging...so i may get that and then send in this crappy one to be refurbished and get a gift card for its value.

  • Poor Airport Reception in MBP

I just bought the 15" 2.16 GHZ MacBook Pro 2 days ago and have notcied the airport reception is flaky. When I am 2 rooms away from my router, I get 4/5 bars and then when I go downstairs, it fluctualtes from 1 bar to 4 bars - very inconsistent.
This never used to happen with my titanium nor does this happen with my Dad's iBook or Sony Vaio.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Should I take it back to the store?
    Thanks.
    Macbook Pro 15" 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have genuine Airport Signal issues with my MacBook Pro, when sitting with the laptop IN CONTACT WITH the airport base station I can't get more than 75% signal, with it 2 feet away I'm at 50%, much more than 5 feet and I'm down to 20% and dropping signal regularly. Through walls? Not a chance.
Obviously, this is not normal behavior for a MacBook Pro, so I will be taking it in to the apple store - I just know that they are gonna ship it back to apple, and I don't want to be without my machine for a week, so I haven't quite got around to it yet.
I have tried multiple apple-branded airports, including the extreme and express I both own and severals others, as well as multiple 3rd party base stations. Signals and connection stability have been unusably poor in all cases.
I have ran all the latest software updates and firmware patches, and have wiped the hard drive and re-installed the entire system from scratch. No change.
I haven't found many other people complaining of similar problems, so I suspect I'm just unlucky. On the other hand, perhaps my antenna isn't plugged in or something simple. Even if that was the case, I doubt that the apple store itself would fix it so I gear up for shipment back to apple.
    Sigh.

  • G5 Quad - No Airport Reception After Upgrade - Software Issue

    Hi,
I've just installed a 'wireless upgrade kit' in my quad (yes, I know it says AASP install only but I did in anyway). Bluetooth is working fine but airport gives me no reception at all.
Now, after some poking around I became pretty convinced this was a software issue. The system I'm running on the quad has been cloned from that on my old DP 2.5 ghz G5. I tried a fresh install on an external disc from the install discs that came with the quad and, lo and behold, airport works like a dream!!
So my question is - is there any way to migrate whatever extensions (or whatever) I need from the 'clean' system to my 'cloned' system so I don't have to start everything from scratch? I've tried an 'archive and install' but still no reception after that so I guess whatever I need must be in one of the folders that was archived...
What software bits and bobs does airport require to work?
Can anyone help me out here?
    cheers

I never found a solution to this. Just had to reinstall everything from the discs that came with the Quad. Annoying.
