Yosemite force reboot
I am running a Mac Pro 3,1 (early 2008), with OS X 10.10.1, and a retro fitted ATI Radeon HD 5770.
For the last two days my Mac has been suddenly force-rebooting on its own. On the restart, it now always asks the Finder to allow incoming connections.
Below id the code from Console directly before the latest forced reboot.
Can anyone shed any light on the issue?

Stuck in Guided Access on iPad. iOS 7!
- Triple-clicking won't work, the Accessibility Options pop-up and I tap Guided Access, it unticks, but no passcode input screen comes up, and the iPad stays in guided access.
- Forced reboots don't work, the iPad just unlocks it self (no lock code) and goes back to the app that I am stuck in, which is Google Chrome.
- Lost Mode is not an option, location services are off.
- When I plug it into my computer, iTunes says that it is locked with a passcode, so I can't back it up.
There seems like no possible way to get out.
Help!?If you are prepare to wipe your iPad.

Adobe Shockwave Player 12.1 and forced reboot
Hello I work for a company with 8k computers and we use IEM (IBM Endpoint Manager) distribution tool. We started Adobe product patching in January and we encountered unexpected forced reboot on some Windows 8 computers. IEM creates installation scripts automatically and I have noticed that there are two installation files: sw_lic_full_installer.exe and sw_lic_slim_installer.exe. I have performed some test with both packages and on one PC where I tried sw_lic_slim_installer.exe the FORCED REBOOT occurred. I have checked event viewer logs and found the following lines:
Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: swMSM. Product Version 12.0.0.1. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Adobe Systems, Inc. installation success or error status:0
Windows Installer requires a system restart. Product Name: swMSM. Product Version 12.0.0.1. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Adobe Systems, Inc. installation success or error status:0
Ending a Windows Installer transaction: C:\windows\SysWOW64\Adobe\Schockwave 12\swMSM.msi. Client Process Id: 220.
The Windows Installer initiated a system restart to complete system restart to complete or continue the configuration of "swMSM".
Could you please explain me when Adobe Shockwave Player updates force a reboot? Unfortunately all updates are packed in exe files so I don't know any way how to suppress the reboot.
Additionally after the installation of the patch we see 2 entries in the control panel:
Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0
Adobe Shockwave Player 12.1
Can you tell me how to get rid of the Adobe Shockwave Player 12.0 entry? Thanks in advance!I had the same problem on an iMac but managed to download and install shockwave 11, see Adobe - Webplayer
There appeared a notice for incompatibility, but was able to continue installation. Apps (not requiring sw 12) did run after. -
OSX 10.10.2 Yosemite Slow Reboot Problem
Millions of mac units have been upgraded to OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite and rebooting process takes 42 seconds on average instead 20 + . The reason is still unknown
but more likely new OS X all fix the problem . It also appears that SSD macs didn't suffer from this issue so it is mainly affecting on regular hard drive base mac units.
you can do better apple ... we are waiting for new OSX...Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Safari Hard Hangs, Force ReBoot
Anyone know what the deal is with safari for the last week or 2? I get completely randon hard hangs where I need to force reboot using the power button. Doesn't seem to be any specific site, and I've seen other postings on here about it.
Was there any kind of solution posted, more than resetting safari, clearing java caches, uninstalling Windows Media Player, and checking the drives and permissions?
Any help would be appreciated.
Dual G5 1.85 Mac OS X (10.4.1) 1.5 GIG RAMStephen,
Welcome to Apple Discussions !
There is nothing wrong with Safari.
There is something amiss with your settings or maintenance
on your Mac or Safari.
Here are some recommendations & questions for you:
1. Trash your Icons Folder:
HD>Users>Home>YourName>Library>Safari -->Icons
Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
(This folder saves favicons of all the sites you visit. Needs cleaning periodically -- or you can change that file's preferences to "Read Only"
rather than "Read & Write." This will keep it from growing in size.)
2. Check all three "auto" preferences in Safari, especially "Other Forms." Sometimes those lists gets very long and need pruning. (I turned all autofill boxes off, and have no problems.)
3. Launch Font Book and check all fonts for duplicates. A duplicated font will have a bullet beside the font family and you can resolve duplicates by selecting the font and at the menu bar, go to Edit > Resolve Duplicates.
Do this for each font with a bullet next to it.
4. Do you have Speed Download, iGetter, PithHelmet, AcidSearch, Safari Enhancer or ANY other "internet enhancers?" Is Norton or Virex on there?
If you're still having problems:
Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
Hope this helps -
I had to force reboot my droid razr. PLEASE HELP!
I had to force reboot my droid razr except that's not what happened. It turned off and is now just vibrating and will not turn back on. Please help I have no other phone.
Have you tried holding the Volume Down button & then pressing the Power on button (while holding the VOL Down?)
Can you boot into SAFE MODE ?
- Press & hold BOTH vol up & down buttons at same time
- Power up the phone - continue to hold the vol buttons for like 1-2 mins ..
If successful, should come up saying "SAFE MODE" in lower left corner. Does THIS work? Power off & on as usual then. What happens? -
Client machine force reboot after apply window patch updated
I found all of client machines will force reboot after window patching updated via SCCM 2012. Have any options in SCCM 2012 can let users to choose reboot their machine after patching ? likely WSUS, users can suspend the reboot request. Pls advice.
The notification will happen automatically if ConfigMgr installs updates that require a reboot but a reboot is not initiated so there's nothing additional you need to do.
Note however that allowing users to choose this instead of forcing it is generally bad practice because the updates aren't truly installed until the reboot happens and there have been a couple of updates of the years that cause flakiness until the system
is rebooted also.
Why not allow the users to install the updates when they want up until a deadline and then force the reboot at the deadline (if one hasn't already been performed)? This gives the user the control over the process but also forces it to happen if the user
neglects performing it.

IPhone 4 shutting itself off at night and only comes on by force reboot
Having a serious issue with my new iPhone 4, every night it shuts down completely and won't start up unless you force reboot it.
The weird thing is, first night it did it I thought it ran out of juice, so I plugged it in to charge (by wall and computer) and it wouldn't show any charging status. Left it for about an hour, still nothing, still won't just turn on by the power button. Finally I got it up and running by force rebooting it (all buttons pressed) and the strange thing is the phone doesn't have a higher charge despite being plugged in for about an hour, still the same as when I went to sleep, 20%.
So it works for the rest of the day without a hiccup...
Then same thing happens last night, shuts down while I'm sleeping, have to force reboot it this morning and the battery shows it's still about 80% charge.
Anyone else experience this?Short version: My solution was going to the Apple store and getting a replacement.
I didn't want to deal with the same issue for a third day and be a QC experiment for Apple so I got the new 32gb home, restored all my data from my backup (not set up as a new phone, same as I did the first iPhone4) and voila the new phone was still alive this morning.
Obviously there's been some manufacturing defeats (swapped buttons, screen issues, reception, now this) so my advice is don't waste your time trying to solve it for Apple, get a new replacement and let them figure it out. My Apple advisor told me that the stores get limited replacement stock everyday just for these types of issues, you just need to make a genius appointment to deal with it.
Good luck! -
my mac is installing yosemite and reboots but then there is no installation and the old system (mavericks) is still there?!
Re-downloading of films is currently only available in the US (due to film studio restrictions), and not all films can be re-downloaded there as not all film studios are allowing it. Have you not got a copy of them on your computer and/or on a backup ? If not then you can try contacting Apple, but they are under no obligation to let you re-download them : http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/contact/

Saved passwords disappeared after forced reboot of the system.
As I said. After force reboot of the system the list of all my passwords was cleaned up. Bookmarks are ok. FF was closed, before reboot. Any ideas how to return them ?
Hi Ishini,
No problem. Firefox would not keep a back up of "key3.db" anywhere. So, if you want to recover your passwords, try to use the following tool.
* [https://www.piriform.com/recuva Piriform Recuva]
Just download the free trial and attempt to recover the "key3.db" file. Just point it to your Firefox installation directory.
This should solve your problem, but there is no guarantee that the file will be there.
So, if this helped, mark it as helpful, so other users who are facing the same or similar issues, can resolve their problem as well.
Have a good one,
Michael. -
Internet Explorer 11 Exit Code 3010 - Forced Reboot
I have an application for IE 11 in SCCM 2012 that performs an application detection to see if the version of iexplore.exe is version 11.% to determine if installed. We've had the application marked as "available" in the software center and it's
been working great. Once installed, it exits with code 3010 (soft reboot) and SCCM notifies the user that a reboot is pending without forcing anything. When we tested to make the application "required", however, it began to force reboots. While I
could do some workarounds like modify exit code 3010 to report a success or mark the application behavior to "no specific action required" to avoid the forced reboot, this ends up marking a successful installation pending reboot as a failure since
it finishes up by performing an application detection. This is a problem with IE 11 since the version of iexplore.exe does not change until after a reboot. Is there a way we can deploy IE 11 as a required application without forcing a reboot on users?I took the suggestion of using software update and ran with it. I took our existing package and built a custom update within SCUP. This is actually working beautifully. It's not forcing a reboot, it's reporting a reboot is pending, and users are
receiving the same up-to-date version of IE we've been deploying already. Thanks for the input everyone!
I'm curious about something.... I was forced to do a deployment just like this once after insisting it was a terrible idea. The next day everyone comes in and IE has been updated. No HTTPS sites would load in the browser. The help desk was overwhelmed with
calls. Are you seeing that issue?

2008 Macbook Pro won't wake up - can't force reboot
I have searched the interwebs high and low on this one for a long time and haven't found a solution, I post now in desperation as I need my mac urgently.
Every once in a while my mac will not wake from sleep, the problem has persisted now for over a year and even a trip to the genius bar didn't help.
I've read many a post on macs not waking up, but in all of them a force restart is possible. Not here, in my case the mac will simply not wake up no matter what, until hours or sometimes days later it simply wakes up again like nothing happened. Last time it occurred I took it to the genius bar (a fair hike for me) and sure enough, it woke up first time. They ran all kinds of tests and nothing was wrong.
I've tried all the zapping of prams and resetting of power systems, I've tried every key combination I can think of, whilst some seem to do something - make the light flash or turn off, get the fans chugging, make little 'computer' noises etc, it just never wakes up. It never shows up on the network, it never makes the startup chime or any other system noises, it really is in a state of hibernation.
If I close the lid, the light on the front glows bright, if I open the lid it gets dull. If I force shut down it goes off completely. But hitting the power button brings it back on (to dull). Holding the power button down to force reboot causes the light to flash rapidly but then nothing happens.
Removing the battery, letting the battery drain, or unplugging the magsafe makes no difference.
All I can ever do is wait, and wait, and so far each time it has just eventually come back to life when it was good and ready, usually around two days later.
When it does, the screen I left is usually still there, just how I left it, only its black and white and a little progress bar chugs along for a few seconds and then its all back to normal, even apps I left open are still there running, like it was really just asleep the whole time.
If anyone has any ideas at all I'd be most appreciative.Well, if You or Genius did all things like PRAM, SMC reset, etcetera, why not read threads about the sleep/wake issue? There you'll see that this is not a uncommon problem.
I solved it by setting the hibernatemode to 0 (zero) via a Terminal command:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false
Then you can get rid of the sleepimage (pagefile) like this:
sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage
(sleepimage is as great as your built-in memory (in my case 8GB)).
There is even a little program in the Appstore to do this (and more) for you:
Smartsleep.
Try this.

After installing the latest Xcode & Yosemite (10.10.3) updates (which installed Photos), computer rebooted fine. When I tried launching Photos, computer rebooted on it's own, repeatedly told me a thumb drive was removed without properly ejecting (despite not touching it), and proceeded to reboot again. Now it's rebooting itself half way through startup, and if I try booting in safe mode it seems to hang about half way through (hasn't budged in ~40 minutes).
It booted in target disk mode just fine, and holding down option let me pick the recovery partition, which also booted fine. Disk verified okay and permissions mostly looked okay, maybe some printer drivers & scripts that seemed off.
It's a real old computer, MacBook Pro from 2007, 15", a 2.2 GHz with 1 GB of ram (I think), with a 160 GB hard drive (just shy of 40 GB free).Turned out this was all because I turned my wifi off:Don’t turn off Wi-Fi in 10.9! (And how to recover a frozen Mac if you do)
Editing that preference file to enable wifi fixed my problem. Even reinstalling Yosemite did not fix it. This seems like a pretty significant oversight on Apple's part, considering it's carried through two operating systems now. -
Yosemite random reboots on macbook mid 2012
Well I've read thoroughly all the posts related to this kind of issue and it seems it affects a wide range of devices. Either mac minis or 2011 macbooks and so on.
I would like to explain my experience and ask for any advice available. I am experienced with computers and OS's, even though I would not call myself an expert, but as an engineer I possess a certain amount of knowledge. So there it goes.
TL;DR at the bottom
Macbook pro mid 2012 13". Default 4gb memory installed, I added a Samsung EVO 830 SSD in 2012 when I bought it, never had any problems with it.
After a couple of weeks after upgrading to yosemite (november '14) I started noticing the macbook resting on login screen after a reboot. No crash report, no message visible of any reason. As I was installing some special software to do some work related to a lab I was working at the time, I thought it was software related. MS Word and Excel often crashed and I had a couple of problems with other programs. Then it started doing it while I was working, so I decided to check things out. The system freezed for some seconds - 1-2 minutes and proceeded to reboot. Sometimes a hard reset had to be performed.
I decided to perform different installations with different options in order to identify the problem:
Reinstall Yosemite from recovery mode: same result, random reboot, no specific app in use, either Xcode, Safari, or just resting idle with just finder.
Format disk and install yosemite applying time machine backup: same result, random reboot, no specific app, and so on.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing the same main software installed previously: same result, random freezes and reboots.
Format disk and clean install, manually installing essential apps (mac app store only): same result, exactly the same result.
Always with the latest OS version available, and with TRIM enabled and disabled, to discard issues with it. PRAM and SMC resets all along.
During all the testing, the console has not shown any crash report or kernel panic related to the event. After every reboot, console would not show anything special before the boot_time line.
After looking for solutions on different forums, I noticed a pattern on some cases that implied a wake on lan or a handoff, or wifi issue. I tested on different networks, disabled and enabled all options commented, with no effect.
Entering
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CSeq 'n Cause: -' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'
on terminal 90% of the time returned errors -128, and some -112 or -2, but they would not be logged to every freeze, just some of them. By the time the
As they may indicate a hardware error, I decided to proceed with the warranty.I bought the Applecare extension when I bought the computer (expiring this summer) so I talked to Applecare about the issue. As there is not an official Apple Store in my town they pointed me to an ASP in my city. They noted all the issues I commented above, gave me a case number to deliver to the ASP so they would have all the information.
I brought the computer to the ASP, gave them the case number (which they totally ignored, the employee seemed oblivious to what a "case number" was) and expected them to find the error. As I noticed the freeze could be sometimes forced via waking up the laptop, I made them a demo. I had ran already the apple hardware test and any hardware tests I was aware of. Etrecheck came out without issues or anything worth mentioning, so I thought they might have specific apple tools to identify hardware error.
They told me they could not find any error on the computer, but that they found errors in the SSD, swapped it with one of theirs to test and no issues found. Good, I thought, at least they found the issue even though all tests run on the SSD by me did not show any trace of it. They charged me 25€ for the service as the SSD was not part of the original computer. As I had been experiencing issues for some time I did not care. I asked them for some kind of report to check the error to provide to the SSD manufacturer, Samsung, as they offer 3-year warranty on SSD's and it had not yet expired. The report said "errors in disk", plain and simple, I asked to talk to the technician for extra info, but he could not remember if it was "corrupted sectors" or something else.
Contacted Samsung, sent my SSD in, and in 4 days I had a new (refurb maybe) SSD same model same size at my door. During those 4 days I reinstalled my old original HDD. As it had a few miles on it (using it as external disk) it was really slow and sometimes it would freeze but the whole system was always dragging, so it could be also failing. Worth mentioning that when swapping disks I noticed the ASP had messed up the position of the small screws on the back of the computer. They did not seem to know there are 4 shouldered screws and 3 regular ones.
I put the new or refurb SSD in, clean install and do some testings. First day everything ok. Proceed to install software. Seems ok. After a couple of days the first freeze and reboot appears. After a couple of PRAM and SMC zaps, events seem to be reduced to a minimum. Even though the system is not completely stable, and I am not quite satisfied with the uncertainty of the freezes (in the middle of a presentation is not the best moment to have one), as it's freezing 1-3 times per week I consider it reasonable.
Time goes on, freezes start to appear again. Sometimes while booting, sometimes on login screen, sometimes on heavy usage sometimes on idle. I still follow all threads related to similar issues, in case a fix appears. All sleep / wake / wifi on - off on sleep tests have been performed.
Now the issue seems to be reduced to two kind of events: random freezes and reboots, and errors while booting. None, and I mean zero of the reboots or freezes has ever had a .crash or any system diagnostic reports related to the hour or even date when the freezes took place. EVER.
While booting, it crashes and I have to hard reset 2-3 times. When freezing, 30% of the time it does not reboot, and gets warmer than idle state but cooler than under heavy load.
I usually zap pram and smc and then it boots normally. But I should not have to be doing that every time I turn it on.
I know its a long post, but it's something I have been following for 5 months now. It's not that I am unaware of different options to solve it. Zapping seems to be the way to go, but still the random freezes interrupt workflow and provoke loss of data.
TL;DR: same freeze and reboots as other people. No discrete GPU to relate it to. Default memory installed, SSD model working on 10.8 and 10.9 with zero issues. All software installation combinations tested. ZERO crash reports on console related to the hour or date of the events. Shutdown causes negative codes, ASP cannot find the issue.
Considering bringing it to Genius Bar, but undermines the purpose of a ASP and if they got the same tools they will not find the issue either.
Appelcare expires in June. Any options I am unaware of? I would relate it to the specific model of SSD under Yosemite if I was the only one experiencing freezes and reboots, which I am not.
Thanks youBoot into Safe Mode. If the problem ceases then you need to remove Virtual Box and the software that installed com.bluecoat.kext.bckd 4.4.1f20. If this does not fix the problem then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
