Yosemite shut down

I've updated to 10.10.3 without any apparent problems but, as I shut down, there's a short flash of an indistinct screen asking if I want to complete the installation. I can't see what application is being referred to. It doesn't seem to be causing issues but I like a tidy system

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
        Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

After the computer starts up I can work in it from a few minutes to almost ten minutes before suddenly it will shut down for no reason. It doesn't seem to be application problem. Sometimes I'm in Photoshop CC 2014, or Apple System Preference running Monitor to Drive Genius or Safari or......
I have started in REPAIR and run Repair Permissions and Repair Disk, with no luck. Did hook up my 15" started the iMac in Terminal mode ran DiskWarrior and like Apple Repair Disk they all say they are fixing issues. But, the shutting down (like someone pulled the power cord out of the iMac keeps happening).
I can start it by holding down the SHIFT key and then I don't have a problem. But, this isn't feasible for working with Photoshop for me.
So, I can I find out what the extension or whatever is causing my problem?
    Thanks,
    Don

Thank again, John. I will go through the log and see if I can make sense of it. A trip to the Genius Bar is an oxymoron. I'm better off taking off my files. Erasing my hard drive and start from scratch. It would be faster with better results. I sure do appreciate all your help and advice.

  • Yosemite shutting down at loading screen

    Hi,
I installed Yosemite a month ago and it has worked without any issues until now. The computer works fine and just this morning when I turn it on and log in my account it goes to the loading bar screen and when it reaches like 40% of the progress it just automatically shuts down without any notice at all. I tried out the HD repair using the recovery mode, single-user mode and tried the fsck -fy and also the option-command P R but no good at all Hope you could help me fix this problem.

    Hey Jacob,
If you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro shutting down unexpectedly during startup, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Be well,

  • OS X Yosemite shuts down during boot (which is very slow)

Here is the situation. After upgrading to Yosemite I noticed my boot time slowed down, same thing happened with Mavericks so I didn't think anything of it, figured my 2011 Macbook Pro was just showing its age. Anyway last night the battery died. I go to plug it in and reboot it and it is taking a very long time to boot up, the little status bar got about half way across then it just shut down. I have tried resetting the PRAM and I have also tried running the disk repair utility in recovery mode, disk repair says the disk is unrepairable. I don't know what happened to cause this and if this has happened to anyone else. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to avoid the cost of a new hard drive and or the time spent starting anew by wiping out this one but if that is what it comes down to then so be it. Anyway thank you for reading this long winded question and for any suggestions/help that is given.

Sounds like the hard drive is failing. Not that expensive to replace yourself.

  • Yosemite shuts down slow

Yosemite hangs and closes slow. How can i fix this? Thank You

    Hi ..
Not enough available storage space can slow your Mac down.
Click the Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?
And make sure to quit all open applications before shutting down your Mac.

  • Yosemite shutting down after startup

I have a 2011 macbook pro and i have a schedule set for it to come on during the morning. My mac starts up like it is suppose to do but if I don't touch it after a certain amount of time it will shut down automatically with out me doing anything. This happens no matter if i have the computer lid open or closed, yes it is on power, no i did not login. Is anyone else having this issue?

    Hello, GinoS.
    Welcome to the forum!
Sorry to hear that. Did something happen to the phone before the issue started? How did you reset the phone? Is it by pressing and holding both the volume down and the power button for 15 seconds, or by going to Settings, About and then reset your phone? By the way, is the phone's software updated? Updating to the latest version of your phone may resolve the issue.
You can check: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/lumia-software-update/ on how you can update the phone's software.
Failing that, you can send the device to our Nokia Care Points for further assessment.
See: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/locations/ to know the Nokia Care Points near you.

  • Macbook air cannot shut down after upgrading to yosemite

    Hi all,
I have a problem from my macbook air purchased at 2012 and current version is Yosemite 10.10.
I upgraded my mac to Yosemite in Oct and it starts not able to restart or shut down. I try to update the software as I see in the App Store and I once again not able to restart. The only way I can do is shut down it manually by pressing the Power button and the software is not yet updated despite it restarted again.
Can anyone teach me how to handle this issue? as it is driving me crazy!!!

    Hi beekatt,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  The resource below will offer some suggestions if your battery is draining quickly.  Have you tried shutting the computer down to see if you get different results?
OS X Yosemite: If your battery runs out of charge quickly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18599?viewlocale=en_US
If your battery on your portable Mac runs out of charge more quickly than you expected, check your battery’s condition.
Hold down the Option key and click the battery icon  in the menu bar of your Mac.
You will see one of the following conditions:
Normal: The battery is functioning normally.
Replace Soon: The battery is functioning normally but holds less charge than it did when it was new.
Replace Now: The battery is functioning normally but holds significantly less charge than it could when it was new. You can continue to use your battery until you replace it without harming your Mac.
Service Battery: Your battery is not functioning normally, and you should have your Mac serviced.
    Monitor your portable computer’s battery
If your battery won’t charge completely
If your battery’s status is Not Charging
If an X appears on the battery icon in the menu bar
I hope this information helps ....

  • My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs or so, then the machine shuts down and restarts.

My MacBookPro (mid 2012) will not complete the boot process. Yosemite's progress widget gets about 1/3 to 1/2 way across when the logo disappears and the screen goes all white for 10-15 secs, then the machine shuts down and restarts. This sequence will repeat seemingly forever unless I shut it down manually.
I upgraded to Yosemite from Mountain Lion a couple months ago, skipping Maverick completely, and I've done any associated updates that Apple told me about. I don't recall which version of Yosemite I have, but I'm sure it is the "latest and greatest".
I've tried re-starting in Safe Mode / Safe Boot and that does the same thing as described above except without the endless restarts. Instead of restarting at some point, SafeBoot proceeds to the white screen and then it hangs until I restart it manually. (I've waited as long os 20-30 minutes with no response).
When I tried the option-command-p-r key combo I never get any chimes or other noises besides the original 1 time boot sound that you would expect to get when starting up a macbook pro.
I was using the mac quite normally (meaning I was doing work I normally do on it and there was no indication of anything wrong) immediately prior to this happening.
The machine is BootCamp(ed) with Windows 8.1 which I use from a VMWare virtual machine instead of natively so that I can have both OSes running at the same time. I also think this is unrelated to my problem. I have been using this setup for more than 2 years.
My upgrade to Yosemite was uneventful and I thought it went well and was very smooth. I don't want to lead attention away from Yosemite, but at this point my problem does not seem related to the upgrade.
    Any help is appreciated.

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Plug off the ethernet cable, ox y yosemite crashes, laptop shuts down

Hi, I Just had recently another  problem :
I use the etherent cable for faster internet speed, but if I unplug it, or it comes off, my entire computer shuts down.
Is PRAM the answer, I seemed to read that everywhere with Yosemite bugs,
    thanks for anyones input!

The "do something with the battery" you're referring to would be to unplug it for a minute. You can go to ifixit.com and get detailed instructions on how to do it for your model. The other thing I'd suggest, though I'm not sure it'll work with your machine in this condition, is to reset the SMC. You can try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If your MPB is a 2009 or later, follow the "for a battery you should not remove" instructions.

  • Since installing Yosemite, I must force computer to shut down.

Since I installed Yosemite , It will not shut down or restart normally, I must force a shut down. Than it takes forever to start up. Anyone having that problem?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Macbook Air Shutting Down Intermittently After Yosemite Update

Since installing Yosemite my MBA keeps turning itself off, randomly. I've noticed a few posting saying it's when theirs goes to sleep but mine is switching off at all different times, even when not running anything other than one browser window (no streaming/videos just basic facebook or something)
There are no error messages and it's almost presents itself as if there is an overheating problem or something but I have checked the temperature and it's never over 36 degrees (C)
I called Apple support and they had me reboot in safe mode, check all disk permissions, reset PRAM and SMC etc but nothing worked. Spoke to another advisor and he said to try reinstalling the OSX but other than that i will need to take it for repair. I'm unable to reinstall as every time i boot in recovery mode and attempt to it encounters an error.
I ran the hardware test on via diagnostics but it says no issues.
Also, on a couple of occasions after it has shut down it has reset the clock as well. Oh, and when i try to switch it on (which sometimes takes a little while) it will only do so if it's plugged into the power cable.
Anyone had any issues similar or can help? I'm stumped and the machine is less than 6 months old I can gather I'll probably need to take it to be repaired somewhere but would appreciate some advice so they don't try and fob me off when I speak to them next.
    Jen
PS - Sorry I'm not that techy, tried to explain as best I can.

I  experienced exactly the same thing and rolled back to a Mavericks time machine backup.
    Since then no issues whatsoever.
Losing out on all the nice bits in Yosemite though
    I have i7 8GB 256GB 2012 Air
