You gotta be kidding!!!

A friend of mine was in the market for a new notebook computer. I convinced her to buy a MacBook Air to replace her Dell. She also needed Microsoft Office and since it's not available on the App store the Apple Store employee sold her the DVD. Now, since the MacBook doesnt have an optical drive how does she install it? Does she have to buy the optional drive, or can she call Microsoft for a down load code?

You can also download the complete software from Microsoft's Office For Mac website, and use the activation code contained in the DVD box. This is the usual method for installing software for your MacBook Air. (in this case, you just download the "trial" version, and activate. It is identical to that which is on the DVD.
I've installed many apps, e.g. MS Office, Parallels, and Fusion online (aside fron the App Store). In fact I can't think of any current software that you can buy on DVD that requires a DVD drive anymore. Most everything is downloadable.

Do you gotta plug up your iPod 5 gen while it's updatting to ios8? Because I updated mine and it won't stay charged plus it's losing battery life very fast.

You have not provided enough info to really help. How fast is fast?
What shows it will not stay charged?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Airport in Bridge mode "not a supported format." Are you F'n kidding me?

Forgive me if I'm freakin' a bit but I am at my wits end with Apple. Here's the breakdown.
Fiber DSL into a standard wired 4 port D-Link router. Router is connected to HP 24 port switch because the D-Link does not have enough ports for my house. Switch feeds cat5 to all rooms in the house. Airport Extreme (newest version) is in living room and set to Bridge mode. I use it to connect multiple items in my entertainment area and wireless access for the Macbooks and iPhones.
Up to a few weeks ago I was connecting my iMac via wireless but got sick of the connection dropping (pings would be unresponsive for minutes on end). I ended up moving my desk and plugging into a cat5 port on the wall. Well guess what... it's still dropping. OK, I removed everything from the network and started adding things one at a time over the past few days. Everything was running better than ever until I plugged the Airport back into the network. Mind you, I'm not running my iMac into the Airport, it is simply on the same network.
After shaking my head for a while I called Apple. Well I just got off the phone w/ Tier 3 tech support for the Airport Extremes. I tell them that I have no idea why, but I'm only dropping connections when the Airport is on the network and I'm just curious if there is something in the settings that I'm missing. This is where it gets good... The brilliant Tier 3 "Technician" tells me that I am running an unsupported configuration because the Airport is running in bridge mode and it's attached to a wired router across the house. He says that if the D-Link router was also wireless he could help me. I asked what the difference was if it was wired or wireless but all he could say was he couldn't help me because it was a unsupported configuration.
So - I'm ready to send all my CrApple gear to some poor kids on the other side of the world. Anyone have any ideas here?

I'm reading the original post with the understanding that the AirPort Extreme is connected by ethernet to the network and the replies indicate that as well.
Are you saying that if the Extreme is in bridge mode connected by ethernet that the ports are not active?
Not at all. What I was trying to say was that the connection from the Extreme to the internet must go through the WAN port, not a LAN port. In a large network, this can happen unintentionally. For instance, suppose a client has Internet sharing enabled and is connected wirelessly to the Extreme and by Ethernet to another router. Then the internet connection from the other router would be shared with the entire subnet, including the Extreme through its LAN port. This could cause problems with the network.
However, with the network setup Jerastan describes, this does not seem to be the cause.

  • How are you immersing your kids in technology?

My kids are kind of techine nerds like me.
My son (12) wants to start up a Kickstarter or similar page to fund a new  super computer and software needed to start his own Twitch channel.

Spicy moms and dads, this thread is for you! (Okay, I guess it can be for spicy aunts and uncles too...)Children nowadays have no shortage of high tech toys to play with... I've seen three year olds with iPads and seven year olds that teach their parents how to use a laptop. And don't even get me started on the ages of some of these kids that have smartphones. All of this is a true sign of the times. But in addition to the basic technology, there are so many different tools to teach kids about the technology they're using and how to code. One fun tool I came across this week is something calledLocoRobo. LOOK HOW CUTE IT IS!What child wouldn't want to learn with this thing?! Even I want to play around with it. So what does this thing do? It's goal is to teach kids how to become programmers. LocoRobo is just a start up but they're...

  • HT201084 can you limit what kids can share from your account

With Family Sharing, do my kids still have to ask permission to download an app that I purchase? I would like to limit what each kid can have from my purchased apps. For example, if I buy a game on my mac mini Family Shared iTunes, can I then decide which kids can download it, or do they all automatically get it?

    Hi,
If you meant "Hide so he Can't... " then the answer is no.
Any Screen Sharing lets the Viewing End the same access as you have.
What you can do is set up a Test User Account on your Mac (System Preferences > Accounts)
This in effect give that User all their own Folders in their Home Folder.
You could put Files, docs and other things in the Public Folder of that account, that you want to "Share, from your Account, so that when you Log in as the Test User they can have access to them.
Public Folders are what other Users on a Mac can "See". They can only Look.
Unless you set up Remote Login in System Preferences > Sharing to behave differently it is also all someone logging in from outside your computer can "see" (like Windows can only see Shared folders).
Once you login as another User your regular User Account is inaccessible apart from the Shared (Public folder only by default) folders.
putting things in the Drop Box in the Test account will make copies of them to do so allowing you to keep unaltered originals.
I hope I have said that clearly enough.

  • On a single app subscription on muse cc you gotta keep your plan updated so your website can stay up

God bless. I got a Single plan on Muse i'm planing to creat my own website. My question can i still keep my website up if i still pay my monthly payment on creative cloud? or is there another way to do this/ thx .. or what plan you'll recommend? i like using other apps too. i like using Photoshop, After effect and muse.

    Hi
With Muse subscription , you can create site and publish on Adobe servers.
The subscription includes one site free count , so you can use that and upload your site , the published site would be in web hosting site plan.
Unless you are changing your site plan, you wont have to pay anything extra.
Please contact support directly for more details as they can provide you more details on your account.
    Thanks,
    Sanjit

  • How do you stop your kid from changing the plan?

I can't actually call a number? There's none listed on this site. I need to stop my kid from changing the plan from 3 gig to 10 bc I can't afford it and I'm going to end up canceling the service if I can't get help. They shouldn't be able to do this. I e had nothing but problems from the start. First getting a used iPad and used phone out of the 3 and being locked out bc the previous owner had I tunes passwords on the phone and on the iPad. Then I was told I was signing up for the next plan and that wasn't so now I have a crapload of extra charges because I can't get ahold of anyone to try to fix this. I'm so frustrated I could blow up!!!

Put a passcode on the account. That way, he will have to know the passcode to change the plan. If he doesn't know the passcode, he can't change the account.

  • Can you be a kid and make an app

Can you make an app when your 12 but you have your parents permission

    Eighteen.
Until you are eighteen, any contract Apple signs with you (like to put your App up on the Stiore) is not binding on you. You are not considered competent to enter into contracts, so Apple will not enter into contracts with you.
If you lie about your age, and attempt to enter into a contract Before you are eighteen, that is FRAUD, and you ARE eleigible to be prosecuted for Fraud before you are eighteen.
If you really, really want. to put a high-quality App up on the store, you need a partner over 18 who is willing to enter into the Apple Agreements They are taking a large risk on you, so it will have to be someone you know who trusts you and is willing to stick their neck out for you.

  • Anti-virus software- you gotta love it......

OK, so i know the liklihood of getting a virus etc is next to zero, but my university still insist that I have a recognised (ie known brand) anti virus package on my ibook. i was thinking intego virus barrier X, but would be really interested to hear what other people's suggestions are.....is norton all that bad? What about sophos?

Nici wrote: "OK, so i know the liklihood of getting a virus etc is next to zero"Not anymore.
See my "Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware" FAQ for my recommendations as well as a list of some recent Mac OS X security threats that have emerged, including Trojan worms, rootkits, and spyware.
Also, don't get drawn in by the dire warnings concerning the RAR vulnerability in Symantec Norton AntiVirus. The article cited by "ds store" is alarmist w.r.t. the specific vulnerability and leaves out critical details. That article is more an opinion piece than a sound bit of reporting. There should be a patch forthcoming. Action on that can be followed here, where one will note that:
    - A workaround has already been posted.
    - A virus signature to look for potential attempts to exploit this issue has also been published.
A similar problem was just found with McAfee Virex.
Where the article is correct is that the Mac is increasingly attractive as a target for developers of malware and spyware. The smug attitude of Mac users who think they're invulnerable may encourage such work.
All software is subject to security issues: Apple is still releasing Security Updates for Mac OS X. No application or platform is invulnerable.
I use and recommend NAV and this glitch will not dissuade me from such.

  • ITunes says my iPod has no songs on it

One day, I was playing Sims Bowling on my iPod, and I decided to turn some music on. So I went back to my Music, and selected Artists. To my horror, all my 1000+ songs, were gone. So I plug my iPod back into my computer to use iTunes with it. I had very little hope this would work, because I "manually manage" my songs, rather than syncing. But suprisingly, iTunes showed all my songs were on my iPod, perfectly safe and stored.
Alright, so problem solved. I look at my iPod's "Music" tab prefrence, just to check if everything stayed the same. Looks like iTunes un-checked the "Display Album Artwork" checkbox. Ugh, why does it do this to me?
I re-check the box and hit "Apply". Suddenly, on the top of the iTunes window, it says "Deleting Album Artwork". WHAT? NO! I quickly hit the small circular "x" button. Oh phew, everything's fine.
So I try once again. I un-check the box and hit apply. Then I re-check it again. And this time, it reads "Optimizing Artwork". OKAY, finally. Good job iTunes. Good job Steve Jobs. Good Job Macintosh.
Thank you for making such great software, I would like to---WAIT what!! An error?!?!?!?????!!!! You gotta be kidding me! Some file is lost? Huh?
WHAT THE HECK! MY SONGS ALL HAVE "!" MARKS NEXT TO THEM! MY SONGS ARE GONE!
But wait a second! I unplug my iPod, and check my music. It's still there! But why doesn't iTunes say it is?
I can't do anything with my songs because of this. DO NOT TELL ME TO DO THE "5 R's". I want a good solid answer to this problem. I'm currently updating iTunes with the new version. I'm pretty sure it won't fix the problem.
    Can anyone help?

    Try the following:
    - A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • Bluetooth Mouse does not work on dv6-4002tu

Hi, I have tried two Bluetooth mice (MS 5000--brand new--and Logitech V470) and neither work on my laptop.
I see that the Bluetooth is enabled in my BIOS.
    I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
I have turned the mouse on and put it into discovery mode.
I have used Add Device from the Bluetooth icon in the system tray, it found it and added it with the correct name.
The mouse appears disabled in Devices and Printers. Under Properties, most of the General info is "Unavailable," Hardware tab info is blank, Services tab shows nothing, but Bluetooth tab shows unique identifier.
I have gone to the driver page using the model number supplied via HP Support Assistant and downloaded the Ralink/Motorola Bluetooth Adapter Driver (SP52533), but the BluetoothSetup.exe fails with the message, "Bluetooth hardware must be switched on to run this package." I am not sure how it discovered the mouse without it being "switched on."
The driver in Device Manager is Generic Bluetooth Adapter by Microsoft, version 6.1.7601.17514, dated 2006 06 21. The downloaded driver only contained an exe file, so no dll's that I could have pointed the Update command to.
I went to the Setting up Bluetooth Connections with Windows 7, http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01948661&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us#DeviceOn, but it doesn't say which devices this applies to until you go to the bother to download it and start it up, then find out it is for Mini computers.
There are help pages which mention the HP Wireless Assistant, but it does not tell you how to get it. It is not a software option in the drivers/software for my laptop, so I'm adverse to experimenting.
I have combed this forum and Googled and haven't found anything like it. I hope someone can help.

Thanks, Mumbodog, but I have already been through that page. I'll list what I got out of that page. There is much information on it, so maybe I missed something or misinterpreted it.
    From the top,
I did remove the device and added it back in through the Add Devices option in the Bluetooth menu. Same result. Device is greyed-out, but the name and ID are there.
"HP Bluetooth driver" when you download it and start the installation, the intro says it is for Mini model computers
Use Windows 7 troubleshooter: you gotta be kidding. I did, but as expected, it did nothing.
I tested the batteries last night, and they have plenty of power. They are brand new ones sent with the new product.
Using the Device Wizard in Windows 7 did something. I removed the device, and instead of using the Add Device command from the Bluetooth icon in the system tray, I used the Add Device in the Devices and Printers. It seemed to go through the exact same wizard screens, but brought back more info on the device. The tabs in the Properties are now filled with more device-specific information, but the device still does not work. Going to configure the mouse brought up a red Microsoft window, so I got excited, but when I went to configure the mouse, only the touch pad and the Logitech mouse I have at home have properties in that control panel. I now only get the Create Shortcut and Properties menu items on the device when right-clicked in the Devices page and clicking on the Properties give an error, "The properties for this item are not availble." I may try to reboot and will report back if that fixes it.
Unable to Find a Bluetooth Device: it seems to have found it because it is listed in the Devices list.
Unable to Pair with a Bluetooth Device: pairing with the default pairing key seemed to go well with the Device ending up in the Devices list. Additionally, yesterday, I tried using the code and not using the code.
Unable to communicate with a Bluetooth device: it is 10cm (4") away from the computer; I had one other device on the computer, which was my mobile and which also could be connected but not accessesed (tried to transfer a picture, and ended up having to email it to my laptop). I remove the device just now, and it now gets the same error as mentioned above, "...not available." The laptop did correctly identify my mobile and put the name of it up in the Devices list, so it does seem to discover the devices.
    I am not synching.
Resolving specific Bluetooth problems in Windows 7 and Vista: none of them seem to apply to my case.
At this point, I will reboot and try again.

  • RIPPING DVD'S onto my MAC

Help...I just had several old 8mm movies burned onto a disc at a local camera store. The files are VOB files ??? Anyway..I need to get them into my MAC so I can make a little IMOVIE. You gotta be kidding me that I need to buy DVD ripping software. Any other options???
I have Quicktime PRO..but that doesn't seem to get it done.
    Thanks......BT

DVD movie disc ripping is generally not discussed in this forum, because it usually entails ripping commercial discs. If you do a Google search on "dvd ripping mac," you should find the popular open source (free) program for encoding a DVD movie disc to a file format iMovie can use.

  • Accessing Windows dial-up connections from java

    Hello,
Anyone has any idea how to go about accessing Windows existing dialup connections and instruct windows to dial-up to internet using the selected connection profile?

    1. why are you using java for a Windows only program?
    2. why are you attempting to do something windows specific for
    a non-os specific language
    WOW!
I've been using java for applications I only run on Windows, Didn't know this is frowned own. You gotta be kidding me right? Do you really think all java programs are written in mind for it be be platform independant? I've been programming in java for around 3 years and we only run it on Windows systems. Non-os specific is nice, but everyone that programs using java isn't looking for that feature. If everyone else out there is only using java because it's platform independance please correct me, I'll be very surprised. One more question, just becaus he is possibly only going to use for a windows program, he should go learn another language? Sorry this post really surprised me.

  • T500 warranty timed out

Last year I bought 2 T500 Thinkpads for our business directly from Lenovo.  As part of the package I purchased the 3 year extended warranty, which the salesman at Lenovo told us also included coverage for the batteries for 3 years.  These warranties cost several hundred dollars.  Now, one year later Lenovo online status is saying the 1 year warranty on our machines has expired today!  We called Lenovo and they said the battereis are the only thing covered for 3 years, but laptops warranties expires today.  You gotta be kidding me!  That is NOT what the salesman from Lenovo told us.  And why in the world would I buy warranties for the batteries to last longer than warranties on the lpatops?  Doesn't even make sense.  Meantime, when trying to enter Lenovo's warratnly web page, now that customer service is closed for warranty issues, the web pages dies on the vine.  A white internet explorer screen, which says, "done" on the bottom left of my explorer page is what I get.  (Even though Lenovo says 24/7 USA Warrantly online support ect.  1)  How can I get Lenovo to understand that the salesman said we were getting a 3 year warrantly on the LAPTOPS + the batteries?  2) How can I get Lenovao to reactivate our laptop warranties as well without charging us all over again?  Do I really have to switch over to Apple to get the service our business needs?
    Thanks.
