Z68 and memtest 86 mystery

So where do we start this time ?
After having set up my new Z68A-GD65 (G3) board, which went without a hitch I must add, I went through a couple of beta BIOS versions to test and see what the restricted multi was all about.
The .N34 beta BIOS eventually had no more multi restriction, but was by no means perfect. Even with the minor issues that still exist, my board is solid and performs up to expectations, maybe even better than what I expected after now having run some comprehensive tests. But more about that later.
First the hardware:
MSI Z68-GD65 (G3)
i5-2500K
Arctic Cooling Freezer 13
Crucial 2X2GB CT2KIT25664BA1339 first mem kit tested
Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9W  1,35V Vengeance  kit currently on the MB
Nvidia 8600GT (currently for testing only)
Seagate 500GB SATA II
Sony Optiarc DVD RW
Corsair CX500 PSU
all mounted on a CM Lab test bench
OS Win 7-64bit
BIOS used for testing V23.3B4 (.N34)
Other hardware used: Fluke model 77 digital multimeter.
One thing that does need mentioning is that the .N34 BIOS applies the correct memory voltage for the Low voltage Vengeance when XMP is enabled. The previous BIOS did not do that and one has to manually adjust it.
Within the BIOS itself, the reported "Current DRAM voltage" in Auto and Manual does not reflect what is applied in "DRAM Voltage" and even that differs from the real voltage. I used a Fluke Digital Multimeter to eventually find the correct voltages and for anyone that wants to apply the correct voltages, here are two tables as tested.
Having used the multimeter to verify the VCore, I found that CPUZ reflects the most accurate reading out of all the applets used. A 1,36 Core voltage in CPUZ was reflected as 1,363V on the multi.
Now let's get to the real reasons for the tests.
In the recent past we had a user on a MSI sister forum that ran memtest 86 and found what he described as reduced base clocks whenever the CPU multiplier was increased by the "Adjust CPU Ratio" function in the BIOS. This led him to believe that although the board is running at an increased core frequency, that the performance would decrease as the BCLK and mem speed in memtest showed this clearly. No real benchmark tests had been done in the OS to either confirm or deny this suspicion, except a remark that it feels considerably slower than the same CPU on another manufacturer's P67.
At this point I must point out that it is not my intention nor the forum's intention to compare manufacturers motherboards for benchmarking. I shall include sample tests performed on that board which should clearly show any performance degradation, if the memtest data is anything to go by.
Having read the post I decided it would be a nice challenge to see if this memtest phenomena actually translates to a real performance reduction once the OS is loaded and benchmarks are performed. I am fortunate that I also happen to have the exact board that the user was referring to and mine has an i7-2600K on it.
First things first. Let's have a look at what the reported memtest issue is all about
This first screenshot shows the values that were monitored to be inconsistent with what is set in the BIOS. My first screenshot was taken with the BCLK at 100 (99.8) and the DDR3-1600 modules.
The second screenshot was taken with my 1333 memory installed and my mutiplier set at X45 and still a BCLK of 100 (99.8). You can clearly see  that the BCLK is at 73, the memory is at DDR3-975. I tested various multis from 33 through to 45 and as the multi increased, these reflected values decreased. Below are the results of my tests with the 1333 memory:
@ X33 everything is still normal
@X34 BCLK=96  mem DDR3-1291
@X38 BCLK=86  mem DDR3-1155
@X40 BCLK=82  mem DDR3-1097
@X43 BCLK=76  mem DDR3-1021
@X44 BCLK=74  mem DDR3- 997
@X45 BCLK=73  mem DDR3- 975
I checked this with the DDR3-1600 modules and the behaviour is the same. I only ran the DDR3-1600 up to X42 as it was enough to prove the similar results.
@X33 BCLK=99  mem DDR3-1596
@X36 BCLK=91  mem DDR3-1463
@X39 BCLK=84  mem DDR3-1351
@X42 BCLK=78  mem DDR3-1254
It must be remembered that at all times the memory was set at 1333 and 1600 respectively in the BIOS.
Thus the user's valid assumption that something is amiss with the Z68 board.
Since these values in memtest do tend to lead one to believe an associated performance penalty, it was time to put it to the test in the real world and run some applications that could measure overall memory performance and also the total system performance.
My choice was to use Maxxmem which produces comprehensive theoretical benchmark numbers and the 7ZIP which has a benchmark tool included, also providing a comprehensive system bench in terms of file compression and decompression.
The software used:
Win7-64bit OS
CPU-Z v1.58
Maxxmem v1.95
7Zip v9.2
Both the systems used are running with 2X4GB DDR3-1600 Vengeance 9.9.9.24 timings.
My Z68 has the i5-2500K and the P8P67-Pro has the i7-2600K.
Now before anyone cries foul that the i7-2600K has 8 threads and the 2500K only 4. My choice of 7Zip was done because it's benchmark has the ability to restrict the amount of threads for testing. So within the 7ZIP benchmark I used only 1 thread throughout all the tests to ensure a fair comparison.
I quote the following from the Help file.
The benchmark shows a rating in MIPS (million instructions per second). The rating value is calculated from the measured speed, and it is normalized with results of Intel Core 2 CPU with multi-threading option switched off. So if you have modern CPU from Intel or AMD, rating values in single-thread mode must be close to real CPU frequency.
The focus is on the Z68 tests and only X45 was used to do a performance comparison between the Z68 and P67 platform.
First the Maxxmem results:
This already indicates that the perceived performance penalty deduced from memtest 86 has no influence on real world performance. As the multi is increased the memory performance increases proportionally.
Now let's have a look at the 7ZIP benchmark tests. These tests were all done with one core, unless otherwise specified and all used a default dictionary size of 32mb.
This one came as a bit of a surprise. You can see that the Z68 actually outperforms the P67 with it's 2600K when both are running 4 threads.
Once all 8 threads are used, then everything is as per expectation.
A sample overview of the values as reflected within the benchmark applications.
And below a snapshot of my Z68 on the bench test. I know it looks like a mess, but when you are doing testing, nothing beats an open bench.
In closing, I believe that memtest 86 needs some work to be compatible with the Z68 chipset as it is clear from the tests that there is no real world performance loss.
Furthermore I invite other users of Z68 boards to do their own tests on MSI boards and post them for comparative purposes, especially those users that still have a BIOS causing them to have the mysterious throttling.

SonDa5 this thread is about memtest86 and the fact that it incorrectly reports BCLK and mem speeds on Sandy Bridge boards as you have observed yourself. Nothing to do with the BIOS.
The test that we conducted were done to show that whatever was reported in memtest86 was not a true reflection of the real BCLK and mem speeds once the system was running in the OS. It further concluded that it did not have any performance impact.
My own voltage observations on my board were added within this thread for the sake of completeness of the testing.
If you have particular bugs with your board, then kindly start a thread in the appropriate section of the forum about your problems and your test results.
You started by assuming a problem of some sort with your board, based on memtest86 observations. This was sufficiently answered within this thread.
You are now using someone else's test results to come to some kind of conclusion on whatever perceived problems you have. Do your own tests if you want to prove a point and then take those as a starting point to substantiate your generalised statements.

  • Log and Transfer - Mystery Clips Appear?

    Whenever I go to import P2 media using the Log and Transfer mode in Final Cut Pro 7, I'm getting these mystery clips labled "Clip #1, Clip #2.. all they way up to Clip #344 and it indicates they reside on my external media drive.  Most of the clips have no related media, that is, nothing appears in the thumbnail or name block-- its just black.  Now, there are a few that do have thumbnails representing video clips but when try to view any related media, nothing shows.  It seems they could be from a non-P2 import from a long time ago, yet the media no longer exists. I can click on one of the clips and eject, which makes them all disappear, but I also get the message "This volume cannot be unmounted because it is being used for importing."  Which is strange as I never import from this volume.  Rather, I either import from an internal drive or from a network drive.
    If I do a Find (command + F) in Finder and type in Clip #1, it cannot find anything on the external media drive or anywhere else.  I'm wondering if it has something to do with some legacy Prefs but I've dumped those and restarted and still get these mystery clips.  And this is EVERY time I go to Log and Transfer.  I can exit Log and Transfer and, in the same session, go back and there are those mystery clips! Again.
    Anybody have any ideas?  Thanks!

    Maybe I wasn't clear:  I have no trouble loading or viewing my P2 card media (which is already off-loaded onto an archive drive and then transcoded-- via Log and Transfer-- to my media drive.)  Its that every time I open Log and Transfer, these mystery clips appear.  If I eject them, I get the error message mentioned.  If I don't, I can still load my P2 media and the mystery clips are listed below the actual P2 media I am looking to use.
    And I have dumped my prefs repeatedly and still the mystery clips survive.
    I think my issue resides in the Log and Transfer Import Preferences.  If I could only clean those up, as I see one of my options is MPEG2 Consumer Cameras (??), maybe that would help.
    Thanks!

  • TS1398 I can longer find the airplay icon on my iPad when I double click the home icon. It worked fine and then mysteriously disappeared. When I click the music icon there is an airplay icon top right which is fine for music, but I can't mirror anything e

    I can longer find the airplay icon on my iPad when I double click the home icon. It worked fine and i used it for a couple of weeks to mirror with the Apple TV and then it mysteriously disappeared. Now when I double click and slide the icons at the bottom to far left, instead of finding airplay there is an extra music icon and a music control panel. If I open up the music app, there is an airplay icon top right next to volume control which works fine with mirroring the Apple TV, which suggests to me wi-if and networks are fine. I can only mirror music however. Any ideas anyone?

  • Memtest 5 beta and Memtest 4.20

    Hi,
    I have ran Memtest 4.20 on 4 * 4GB RAM kit and after 8 passes no errors were found. I then ran the Memtest 5.0 beta version, which covers Ivybridge, and 2 errors were found after 8 passes. Therefore, my question is should I RMA the kit?
    Thanks in advance.

    Mentioning the exact components  you are using, your current UEFI/BIOS Version and your memory settings would be rather helpful to give you further suggestions.  --> >>Posting Guide<<
    Also, you might want to test each of your modules seperately.

    Turns out both of us were incorrect. We were one above & one below on the chips. Not 1066, not 1600, but good old reliable 1333's. Yes people, you read right. Tested Triple Channel RAM (two sticks) in a Dual Channel Z68. Works great!
    If they are able to run with CAS = 11, they are DDR3-1600.
    DDR3-1333 canNOT run with CAS = 11.
    You need to remove the heatspreader and to study the chips.
    It's a matter of revision:
    2.X = Elpida
    3.X = Micron
    4.X = Samsung
    5.X = Hynix
    8.X = Nanya
    They are the best DDR3 chips manufacturers.
    In any case, CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 are using (overvolted) DDR3-1600 chips.

    In summary for those looking for RAM for the Sandy Bridge platform, if any of the RAM you purchase has SPD profile programming to default to the platforms supported CPU IMC of JEDEC standard DDR3 1333 with common timings of 9 9 9 24 @ 1.50v's + or - 0.075v's, it should POST just fine.
    I totally agree.

  • Interactive Report and the mysterious invalid number

    Hello,
    I have an application that is ready, or so I thought, to be sent to a client to update an existing application. One page in the application has an interactive report that is based on a table in the parsing schema that is joined to the apex_collections view. The report works without issue in my dev environment as well as in the client's test environment. But when a colleague tested the updated app in a different test environment, the report errors out with an ORA-01722: invalid number error.
    Needless to say I'm now hesitant about the update to production because I can't find the cause of the issue on my colleague's machine and would hate for this to happen in production. In trying to find the issue in on my colleague's machine, I first tried removing all of the columns (save the id) from the report to see if it was being generated there, no change. Then I started removing the joins and when the join to the apex_collections view was removed the error disappeared. The join was written as:
    SELECT *
    FROM table tbl
    JOIN apex_collections col
       ON tbl.id = col.c001
    WHERE col.collection_name = 'MY_COLLECTION';I know that the underlying tables for the apex_collections view store columns c001 .. c050 as VARCHAR2(4000) so I was relying on implicit data conversion to apply the join. Perhaps this is where the error is coming from but that would mean that "extra" rows are being returned as all of the c001 values returned in the session (from dev toolbar) are also valid numbers. As I said before, the problem is only occurring in 1 of 3 apex instances so I tested it in a 4th, and again, there was NO problem. I then realized that my query is potentially dangerous if c001 is used to hold something other than a number in the current session, which is NOT the case in any of the instances, but I tried updating the report to the following to see if it would help:
    SELECT *
    FROM table tbl
    JOIN (
       SELECT TO_NUMBER(c001) AS c001
       FROM apex_collections col
       WHERE collection_name = 'MY_COLLECTION'
    ) apex_col
       ON apex_col.c001 = tbl.idThat query worked as expected in the dev environment and will be used as the query going forward. However, it failed to fix the problem in the "problem" instance. This seems to be a local issue but I'd like to know for sure. All of the systems are configured as follows:
    1. Dev - Oracle 10g R2 XE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Works
    2. Test1 - Oracle 10g R2 EE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Works
    3. Test2 (colleague) - Oracle 10g R2 XE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Fails
    4. Test3 (my localhost) - Oracle 10g R2 XE - ApEx 3.1.2 - Works
    5. Prod - Oracle 10g R2 EE - ApEx 3.1.2 - ???
    Any ideas?

    Dan,
    I'm always suspicious of problems that disappear without knowing why - usually they reappear the very moment that an end-user starts using the app :D
    You didn't show how you are populating the collection in your original posting, so I'm not clear on exactly what the data would show. What I was thinking was, knowing that collections are all varchar2's, that something like TO_CHAR() had been used in the SQL statement that created the collection.
    I don't think that trimming the data would have any effect. If the problem does happen again, I would suggest creating a report based on the collection (basically doing a data dump onto a page) and then see exactly what is in there. If any number contains a comma (or other characters such as currency symbols), then you have to use a number format string to get back to the actual raw number.

  • Mac Mini and the Mystery of the disappearing resolution

    I've had my Mini for about a month now. It is connected via a Belkin KVM switch to a Yuraku 22-inch VGA monitor. All has been well and the Mini has been outputting at the maximum supported resolution of 1680x1050. Until the weekend.
    Now it will only output at 1400x1050, which I noticed it had switched to when I booted it up at the weekend. System Preferences offers 1920x1280 as the maximum resolution and several 1400xYYY options, but nothing with 1650 horizontal.
    As far as I know nothing has changed on the Mini. I did remotely control the Mini from my Thinkpad last week (1440x990 screen) via LogMeIn. Whilst I can understand that the resolution might be temporarily changed, why has the 1680x1050 resolution completely disappeared from the display options?

    No, it's the Belkin Flip: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=267041

  • Print Booklet - OS X - PS to PDF with Preview, and a mysterious line?

    Hi,
    I'm preparing something for print, and I've run into a couple of questions I'd love some advice on.
    The printshop wants the A5 booklet as a A4+bleed PDF, so I'm producing 'Print Booklet' to a Postscript with the PDF PPD and using Apple's Preview to convert to PDF. Is Preview's conversion going to cause me any problems, for example any unwanted compression/other unpleasant surprises?
    Upon conversion Preview is showing a hairline white gap between the now combined first and last page (see image below). In the original document the purple-ness extends beyond the 3mm bleed on the respective edge of both pages. I was wondering if anyone might have an idea why this would be the case?
    Thanks in advance,
    James

    Hi, Your problem may be the creep setting. Set it to 0.  Also, I often encounter white hairlines (object boxes)  that come & go depending on the zoom setting. I've learned to trust they do not print at the print shop.
    I have a questions to add to this.....
    I just upgraded from SC2 to SC6 and swtiched from PC to Mac OS Lion (10.7). I'm having trouble with print booklet settings - I'd like to set to device independent, but it  won't seem to output on anything other than letter size; the settings to change paper size on device independent is greyed out). It will only print on letter size, meaning I only get the even pages of the booklet spreads. I too am a control freak and like to make sure everything is lined up perfectly before sending off to printer. I can get it to work if I use my home printer ppd (whimpy inkjet), but feel uncomfortable having it be dependent on that ppd as opposed to the professional printer ppd.
    Our former printer imposed the pages from a pdf file... but our current printer wants it in booklet.
    Thanks -

  • File Icons and types mysteriously changing

    I'm running a MacMini as a server for a small office. There are only three clients attached so I use personal filesharing. All files are shared on an external drive using Sharepoints. It's been working just fine until recently. Many files (hundreds) are suddenly showing up as generic, UNIX exe files. It's not just new files, too. Old files are appearing the same way. I've repaired permissions, made sure that I had the latest version of Sharepoints, repaired the external drive and ran "Cache Out X". Am I missing something? Is this a known issue and, if so, what caused the sudden change? It would be an unthinkable amount of work to search for and change all the files manually.
    The mini is running OSX 10.4.6.
    TIA

    I figured out what was going on. Somehow (is there a key command that could do this?), I had activated the "Show Icon Preview" option that can be checked or unchecked in the dialog that appears when selecting the View | Show View Options from the Finder menu bar. I unchecked the "Show Icon Preview" checkbox, and the icons reverted to what I wanted. I have no idea how this got enabled, as I'm positive that I didn't set it from the Finder menu.

  • DDR500 and the Mysterious Vanishing PAT

    So. I don't really post here, but I lurk almost daily. Thus I'm pretty much at the end of my tether with these two (apparently unrelated) issues.
    First, although I have RAM specifically rated at 500 MHZ, whenever I try to change the DDR Frequency from Auto to 500, I get the now infamous Dram-timings-too-tightly-set message at post. Now matter what I do. I've tried turning everything memory related to its lowest possible setting, upping the voltage to 2.75 and even manually lowering the timings to the lowest possible level (verified by CPUZ), all to no avail. Am I just SOL here? Does anyone know if this is either memory incompatibility (which would be just silly since this is SOLD AS DDR500) or a broken bios setting? I'm stumped.
    Second, my pat (or MAT or whatever we're calling it these days) shifted off at some undetermined point and will not turn back on no matter what I do. I'm running turbo mode right now and have tried downgrading to fast, but no dice. Since I haven't actually pulled up CPUZ since I got a stable overclock with which I was happy, I really don't know what the causative factor is. All I know is that when I got the board (mid-September) CPUZ read PAT as enabled, whereas now it lists it as disabled.
    As I said, I'm basically just pulling my hair out at this point, so I'd be grateful for any help.

    Hey Rob, you live where I do! (I mean, more specifically than “Earth”) Greets.
    OK, do you mean DOT rather than MAT? MAT=PAT: they're only different because PAT is basically the term MSI uses because...OK, here's what happened, if memory servers. The 865 chipset is basically the same as the 875, except that MAT (Intel’s tem) is disabled. Several companies found a way to re-enable MAT in the 865; I think that had to do with lying to the chipset or BIOS as to what the some certain frequency is. Don't quote me on that, since (a) I read it in an article only cursorily and (b) it's been quite awhile since I did any of this in depth. Because of this, certain Springdale (865) chipsets actually outperform most canterwood (875) chipsets. Then Intel’s legal department got to work and basically said no one else could use the term mat; hence we have P(erformance)A(cceleration)T(echnology), hyper-something-or-other from ASUS(I think) and others.
    Moreover, I don't *think* your agp/pci busses should be overclocked if you have the correct setting in the bios (66.7/33.3). Or, at the very least, clockgen reports my busses as correctly clocked with a 220 MHz FSB. And I'm pretty sure that clockgen is accurate. I'm actually wondering whether MSI merely disabled PAT/MAT via performance modes in this bios release, perhaps in preparation of a release in which PAT/MAT isn't tied to memory timings (at present, fast, turbo and ultra turbo enable PAT/MAT, but they also tighten your memory timings; most of us have thought that these two things should have separate settings).
    So that's the what as far as I understand it. For the record, I am very invested in these issues. If anyone else has any data that might help, speak up. PLEASE.

  • Junk Mail, Pushing messages, and a mystery icon

    1) Is there a junk mail filter? the Junk filter works so well on the iMac, I'd love to have one on my iTouch.
    2) Is there a way to limit the dates of messages that are loaded onto the device? If I've been working at the office and haven't used the iPod for a week, it's a nuisance to turn it on and have 200 messages show up, either that I've already dealt with at my desk, or are junk.
    3) So, I push the trash can icon again and again. Sometimes, however, the trash can icon is replaced by a file box with an arrow, and this icon isn't mentioned in the online user manual. Does anyone know what it is?

    1- No
    2 - No you can just vary the number of message to download.
    3. The icon is probably an archive .  My gmail account shows an down arrow into open box and it is an archive.  To delete I select move and move to trash.

  • New AOL version is always frozen. Uninstall doesn't work since when I reinstallfirefox aol and a mysterious window keep reappearing. What to do?

    After installing the aol version of firefox, my firefox always opens with a window that is empty and that makes it impossible to go further. I have to use the taskmanager to get out of firefox. When I uninstall firefox and reinstall, the same thing happens. So my firefox is unusable. What do I do to get things working again?

    Hello,
    Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
    '''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
    #Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from [https://www.mozilla.org mozilla.org] (or choose the download for your operating system and language from [https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ this page]) and save the setup file to your computer.
    #After the download finishes, make sure all Firefox processes have stopped. Hit CTrl+Shift+Escape to open the Task Manager, click the processes tab and look to see whether Firefox.exe is in the list (it might be there more than once). If you see it, click it and click End Process. You might see a warning message when you do this - click Yes or OK.
    #Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    #*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    #Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    ##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    ##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [[Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems#w_5-reinstall-firefox|here]].
    <b>WARNING:</b> Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. • Photoshop CS4 and the mysterious vanishing marching ants...

    About ten minutes ago, as I was cropping photos in Photoshop CS4, the marquee tools suddenly lost their marching ants.
    Now, when I click on the rectangular marquee tool and move the cursor to select an area, the outline of the selected area is invisible - until I let go of the mouse, when it suddenly appears as a solid line.
    I assume I must've turned the marching ants off somehow by mistake. How do I turn them back on?
    A swift web search suggests that I can hit Control+H or Command+H to turn the marching ants on and off. Neither of these work for me.
    Other suggestions I've found are to 'reset' the tool (how?) - or install a new video card, which surely can't be an issue in my case. I have not installed any updates - this literally happened minutes ago, in mid-job.
    I'm using a Mac, OSX 10.8.5 if that makes any difference…
    There MUST be a simple 'click on such-and-such' solution. Thanks in advance if you know it!

    Slight update - I have now discovered how to reset tools in Photoshop. Basically, I did what the video in the link below suggests.
    It didn't make any difference.
    When I selected the rectangular marquee tool for resetting, a message in the box said  'No presets defined for current tool' - which presumably means there was nothing to reset. That would explain why it didn't work, then.
    So if the marquee tools did not have any presets, why did the marching ants turn off - and how do I get them back?

  • Attempting to install LiveCycle and English and Core .cab files aren't recognized and then mysteriously disappear

    I am attempting to install the free 60-day trial of LiveCycle ES4. It downloads all files into the temp folder. When I begin install I can see the English and Core files in same folder. Install reaches a certain point and then states it can't recognize one or both of those files and tells me to ensure they exist and are accessible. Once I do they both disappear

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    *Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
    After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • 10.4.11 and Appleworks 6.2.9 and some mystery updates

    My software update wants to download and install 10.4.11, but I want to make sure my Appleworks 6.2.9 will still work before I install the update because I have no desire want so ever to move to iWorks etc. which are just far inferior to Appleworks for my uses.
    So can I use 10.4.11 without losing Appleworks or not?
    Will the updates below help? What are they for anyway, and why can't i find that info before I download them?

    The AppleWorks 6.2.9 Update will do absolutely nothing on your already installed AppleWorks 6.2.9.
    Its task is to update old AppleWorks 6 versions (6.0 thru 6.2.8).
