Assigning keywords during photo import
Hi, I'm using Aperture 2 since a long time and just testing Aperture 3.
I'm working heavily with keywords to categorize my shootings.
I really love Aperture's concept of keyword groups and would love to group my keywords which I currently organized in a flat list.
For instance I played around with a structure like this:
• People
• Albert
• Benedict
• Caroline
• Shootings
• Indoor
• Outdoor
• Nature
• Landscape
• Animals
• Plants
In the photo import dialog I usually enter related data like copyright, subtitle, and also keywords.
If I enter the keyword "Indoor" it's not detected as "Shootings > Indoor" but a new keyword is created in the first level of the keyword list. Sure, afterwards I can move and merge the newly created keyword to the correct group, but that's sure not the best way to handle it.
My question is:
How can I enter the keyword in the photo import dialog to be detected as "Shootings > Indoor" correctly?
I could not find any hint in Aperture 2 or Aperture 3 manual.
Thanks,
Matt

I am also missing the keywords section which used to appear where the little grey map is at the bottom of the metadata inspector. I found it was the best way to enter keywords, rather than the little box in the metadata section itself. Does anybody know if there is a way to get it back?
Have you tried the Control Bar (toggle with "d") or the Keywords HUD (toggle with {Shift}+h)?
IME, the Keyword entry field of the Control Bar, which features auto-complete, is the best (and only good) way to enter keywords in Aperture.

iPhoto consistently crashes during photo import.
I have already taken the following actions:
-Verify/Repair Disk Permissions
-Verify/Repair Disk
-Update software
I tried to rebuild the iPhoto library but was unable to.
I am running a MacBook Pro (OSX Lion 10.7.2, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM)
Does anyone have any input for how I can fix this problem?

LR 4 & 4.1 can't create new folder manually during photo import
Windows 64, i7, 12GB RAM
I don't seem able to create a new folder manually on photo import. This still works fine on the same PC with LR3.6. Anyone else seeing this? Thanks.I've sometimes found the 'Make New Folder' option to be a bit hit and miss on Win7....so I generally avoid it. In your case, wouldn't it be easier to have Lightroom create the folder for you by setting up your Destination panel as follows:
Obviously the selected target parent folder in your case would be "Photos Working Folders", use "Organize: Into One Folder", tick the Into Subfolder box and enter the name of the sub-folder you want, e.g. raw0015. As you can see, if the sub-folder doesn't yet exist, Lightroom then shows you that it will be creating it for you. -
IPhoto unexpectedly quitting during photo import...
it's crazy. I've been using iPhoto or 800 years, I migrate my settings + photos from my 12" Powerbook into my new MacBook Pro with iLife 08... after a few successful import sessions with my Canon Elph (business as usual!) all of a sudden I'm getting "unexpectedly quit" and I can't import. What the heck?
This happen to anyone?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
start with the basics:
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

Do keywords follow photos in export to PS & on into web albums?
Just returned from 3 month trip and am beginning to organize and assign keywords for about 10,000 images using LR for the first time (4.2). I did not assign keywords during import along the way.
Ultimately after pp, these images will go into albums on my PBase site, where I want keywords assigned to help with search engine placement. They will go from Collections in LR, be exported for work in Photoshop and then be saved into folders to be uploaded to the website. Will keywords I assign now accompany each image along that process so I don't have to re-do it when I upload to PBase?
I will appreciate any links to useful explanations of how this process works. (I did a search and have seen some keyword articles, but none address this specific issue re: web albums).
Thanks,
KarenIn the Lightroom Export dialog box, you can globally tell LR to export keywords (or not, your choice). It actually is in the Metadata section of the LR Export dialog box, you would probably want to select "All".
Individual keywords can be set up to be exported, or not. This happens when you create the keyword, you can check (or uncheck) "Include on Export".
Done properly, as explained above, the keywords appear in your exported photo, and should be recognized by any photographic application or photographic web site. -
IPhoto 9.4 - can't assign keywords to a movie?
After upgrading iPhoto to v 9.4, I can no longer tag video files with keywords.
This is for newly imported videos, as well as videos that were in my Library prior to upgrading.
I'm not having any problems assigning keywords to photos.
Anyone else seen this behavior and/or have the ability to associate keywords in v9.4?
Is this a new feature or a bug?
Thanks,
TomFor me too all keywords in the Keywords panel do not work on ".MPEG4" video files, but as a workaround, typing the keyword directly into the keywords brick in the Info pane, still assigns them correctly.

Keywords won't import when importing Projects
Hopefully someone can help me with this mystery. I use Aperture on two machines. My iMac is my master, and my MacBook is my field computer. I recently added keywords to about 10,000 photos while sitting in a hotel room for a few days. When I got home, I exported all the affected projects from my MacBook and then subsequently imported them into my iMac. However, none of the keywords showed up! In an effort to troubleshoot, I again exported a single project from my MacBook, then imported that project into the same computer. But, again, the keywords didn't show up in the imported photos. In further troubleshooting, I tried exporting/importing a single photo (versus a project), and the keywords showed up just fine. So it appears this issue is only with importing/exporting projects, not individual photos...
In further troubleshooting, I viewed the file called 'Version-1.apversion' in the Aperture Library both prior to and after export as well as after import. As expected, the keyword info appeared in the pre- and post- export versions of the file, but it didn't appear in the post-import version:
<key>keywords</key>
<array>
<string>Alyssa Family People</string>
<string>Alyssa's Friends Friends People</string>
</array>
I can post the entire contents of the file if that helps you diagnose my problem, but the files are essentially the same (other than the date and ID info). Anyone have the key to this riddle?? I'd really rather not export/import all the photos individually!Upon further troubleshooting, this problem only appears to affect my keywords. All other IPTC/EXIF data imports properly (for instance: headline, byline, event name, city, country, etc.).
I analyzed the package files associated with the images immediately prior to and after project export, and for the most part they are identical, which seems to indicate the project export functionality is working properly. However, it for some reason drops off the associated keywords during project import (file|import|project), so it appears my problem is at this step?? Thanks!! -
I have keyword C in a hierarchy:
•A
•B
C
During import if I try to assign keyword C a new keyword C is created at the top level and this new C is what is assigned to the images.
If I assign the keywords after import using *Metadata->Batch Change* it works fine, keyword C from the hierarchy is assigned.
I have made sure that no C exists at the top level (or anywhere else in the keyword HUD except in A->B) before importing, I deleted all the completions from the keyword input field also.
Am I doing something wrong, is anyone else having this problem?
thanks in advance.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano
Just blew away Plist file and tried it, still does it.
.It is still not solved - after each import with previously assigned keywords from level C these keywords are imported at level A, that is easy to fix in the Keywords HUD; however, the worst part of it is, that all smart albums using those particular keywords will stop working. The smart albums will no longer refer to the original keyword but instead to the new duplicates and the albums will be empty.
After importing images with keywords all my thematic smart albums (screensaver selections, web selections, book selections) have to be edited again, and sometimes I even have to repair the library because merging the duplicates in the Keywords HUD does not always remove the duplicates from the smart album settings. E.g., these duplicates no longer exist in the Keywords HUD, but remain in the smart album settings: (the original keywords are children of the group "_Rollen")
This behaviour is the same on all three machines with AP 3.2.1 and OS Lion 10.7.2 I have access to:
MBP 13", MBP 17", iMac.

How do I assign keywords to groups of photos?
apologies in advance if this has been answered, I can't see how to search the forum first before posing the question.
I recently bought a DSLR. my photography habit is exploding and I'm creating a lot more photos. I need to be more diligent about organizing them and realized I should be using keywords.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I can tell you need to select each individual photo to assign a keyword. Is this true? Can I not select >1 photos (group, whole event, etc.) and assign a single keyword to them all at once?
With 5000+ photos, assigning one keyword at a time makes the feature useless!
Thanks in advance for your help.
Curtis.Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's relatively easy. Select the photos you want to assign keywords to and type Command+K. The keyword pane will come up and you'll be able to select one or more keywords to assign to the selected photos.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
HOw to assign keyword to a group of photos
Apple Pro training series advises to assign keywords to multiple photos, to simply use CMD A to select all photos, then drag
keyword over one of the photos and it should be assigned to all. When I do that the keyword is only assigned to the
one photo that it is dragged to.. not all. How do I do that?
thanksTurn off "Primary Only". The tuturial seems designed to trip users up at this point.
Since you are working your way through it, I leave figuring out how to do it as an exercise (but you might examine the Tool Strip).
Cheers. Welcome to Aperture-land. -
I am using LR 5.7 on a Mac OS 10.10.1 with a Time Machine backup - the vast majority of my photos were taken on an iPhone 5 in the year 2014 and are in a folder on my computer internal hard drive.
The structure is my Folders > Macintosh HD which has a folder inside called
Pictures Users/myname with 1719 photos in it -
when I click on this folder the following folders open up:
> folder dated 1904(?) with 2 items
> folder dated 2012 with 1 item
> folder dated 2013 with 1 item
> folder dated 2014 with 1352 items...
.... and so on until
>Exported Original Photos 365 (which are exports of photos from iPhoto that I wanted to catalog and develop in LR)
The Maths are correct. But as for the tags:
when I open the folder Pictures Users/myname containing 1719 photos and view them as thumbnails I see all the keywording applied to my collection of photos
BUT when I open the folder Pictures - Users/myname and then folder 2014, I see a list:
folder 2014 with 199 items
folder 2014-01-20 with 1 item
folder 2014-01-21 with 5 items
etc
All well and good.
BUT if I open these dated folders with small numbers of images in them (never more than 50 per day), view the images in a grid and click on a photo, there are no keyboard tags to be seen in the information panel. They only time I see any keyword tags that I have entered is when I open Macintosh HD > Pictures - Users/myname which contains my entire library of photos taken in 2014 and those added to the catalog from iPhoto.
Should I see tags for the photos in the individually dated folders e.g. Macintosh HD > Pictures - Users/myname > 2014 > 2014-01-20 and so on day by day ?
I have been tagging my photos with keywords after my weekly import. And have been doing this after viewing each photo from the grid view of photos displayed by clicking on Macintosh HD >Pictures - Users/myname.
Have I made an error?
I want to tag my collection of photos by the correct method before it grows in size.
Many thanks
David (Brighton, UK)Hi,
I moused down on the "+" sign where it says Folders and "show photos in subfolders" was shown as already being "on".
I followed your suggestion: I tried to keyword the photo in Macintosh HD/Pictures - Users/myname/folder 2014-01-20 with 1 item however it did not permit me to type in a keyword in the keyboarding section panel on the left hand side, so I was unable to check if it stuck.
I don't know whether this is important or not, but the list of folders, subfolders etc have slightly different arrow heads:
If I drop down the Macintosh HD location there is a SOLID, grey downward pointing arrow to the left hand side of the folder Pictures - Users/myname/..
However, if you drop down folders from Macintosh HD > Pictures - Users/myname/.. to show inner folders:
Macintosh HD> Pictures - Users/myname/... > folders dated 2014-01-20 etc., then there is a horizontal triangle that is made up of grey dots rather than a solid triangle for every dated folder - is this as expected? -
Aperture will not assign keywords to multiple photos
Recently I have not been able to assign keywords to multiple photos simultaneously. I also have the same problem when I try to copy adjustments and stamp to multiple photos. Only the one with the main selection is processed. Is this a bug in the newest Aperture (3.4.5)?
Edit:
Sorry, I found the solution and wasn't able to delete the question: The problem was that the Primary Only button was active.
Message was edited by: Ernst VikneYou may have the "Primary Only" flag set. Then keywords, ratings, etc will only be applied to the primary selection. Turn it off in Aperture's "Edit" menu: Edit > Primary Only or press the button with the framed "1".
Regards
Léonie
You may want to have a look at this User Tip: Keywords or ratings are applied only to one of the selected images - why? -

BUG 2.1 - ARW (Sony Raw) no photos found error during Auto Import
I've seen this issue since beta1. The issue seems to be related to a camera setting that stores the files in folders by date. The Folder structure becomes drive>DCMI>10202008>image.ARW
This "no photos found error" I have seen in beta1 LR1 LR1.1 LR1.2 LR1.3 LR1.4 and LR2.0 this is still an issue in LR2.1
Auto import works fine with canon or nikon RAW files (I've used several different cameras with no problems)
The Folder structure for canon files is drive>DCMI>100>image.CR2
Auto import Does not work with Sony A100 .ARW files with folders by date turned on I have heard from people with other Sony cameras like the A700 also have this issue.

What's The Best Way to Assign Keywords to Multiple Images?
I'm finally starting to organize my photos with keywords, but something about the way it works in LR2 is driving me batty.
I came back from a concert Saturday night with over 1,000 photos (double coverage by me and my wife). I'm trying to use keywords to designate the 14 different performers who appeared on the stage at different times during the evening, when there could be anywhere from 1 to 7 performers on the stage at the same time.
Now, it seems to me the easiest way to assign these keywords would be:
1) select a series of photos in which one or more performers appear
2) in either the "keyword suggestions" or "keyword set" panel, click on the keyword "buttons" I've already created from the performers names.
But this doesn't always work. I note that when I highlight a number of photos, ONE is more brightly highlighted than the others, and sometimes, that's the ONLY one that gets the keywords I just clicked on. Apparently, that one image is more "selected" than the others in the series I've highlighted.
It would not be quite so infuriating if that approach didn't work at all, but the oddity seems to be that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and I don't know what I'm doing different when it does or doesn't work.
What does work universally is to to the "Keyword List" panel and type in the name I need, and then right click when the name comes up and select "add keyword to selected photos." That seems to work every time.
Or, I can type "Click here to add keywords," type in the name I need, and hit return twice. That assigns the keyword to all the selected images. But then I have to do it again for every performer that appears in that series of frames.
Like I say, the easiest scenario would be the 1-2 step I outlined above, but I cant seem to get that to work all the time.
Anybody know the trick to getting that 1-2 scenario to work every time?
Thanks,
--PSOh, wow. I have exactly the same problem of LR not assigning keywords to all my selected images.
I will try the grid, select the grid and not the filmstrip, and look for the current image metadata checkbox as well.
BTW, Adobe told me to delete the preferences file, which I did.
They told me to optomize the catalog, which I did.
And, lastly they told me to create a new catalog and import all the data from my old catalog, which I did not do.
Stand by ...
Wow, that is it. You folks solved my problem.
Library Mode, select in the grid OR filmstrip (yep-but harder to see in the filmstrip anyway),
COULD NOT FIND-look for the current image metadata checkbox as well.

How to remove parent keywords in photos?
Hi all,
I have started the laborious task to keywording my photos in Aperture 3, all 35,000+. I recently imported my photos folder into Aperture and will eventually restructure the library hierarchy based on keywords.
To help give me a kick start on keywording, I purchased the Controlled Vocabulary Keyword Catalog. This has been a big help. I still have had to add my own keywords. But, at least, I didn't have to start from scratch.
I eventually plan to do detailed keywording as I build out my keyword hierarchy. But for now I may use more general keywords. For example, I may assign the keyword "mammal" to a set of photos. Later on, I may add the keywords elephant, bear, beaver, etc. which are all have the parent keyword of mammal.
It would be very nice when assigning new keywords to photos for Aperture to be able to remove parent keywords from the updated photos. Is there a way to remove parent keywords from photos in Aperture either built-in or via plug-in or Apple Script?
PS: Yes, I know that specific keywords can be manually removed for individual photos a a group of selected photos. I am looking for a way to do clean up keywords in batch instead of manually doing this. Trying to save time.
Thanks!
Steven
nullSince you have two External Definitions and you are using both in on mapping hence your scenario becomes 1:N mapping scenario and this is the reason you are getting the additional nodes in your mapping.
so if your requirement is 1:N then whatever you are getting is correct, you can refer the below mentioned blog for help on this, But if you don't want the additonal nodes then you have to create TWO different mappings and used the external definitions seprately in each mapping.
