Intel MacPro 10.5.8 can't restart it after iTunes update.

I can't get past the startup screen. The white screen with spinning wheel will not progress. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8. I accepted an update from Apple for newer version of iTunes. I needed to restart the MacPro for a reason unrelated to iTunes update. I have not been able to restart. Is there a way to restart in safe mode? Any recommendations? This is not my MacPro, I can't upgrade to new OS.

To start up in Safe Mode, hold down the Shift key at Startup. It takes about five minutes to do a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) on the Boot Volume, then comes up with a Login Screen, even if you normally auto-login.

  • Can't Restart Computer After Software Update Download.

I have a PowerBook G4 which I had upgraded back in December to Leopard. After downloading software updates a couple of days ago, I tried to restart my computer and all I got was the Apple logo and the spinning gear. I brought my computer into the local Apple Store and the tech tried to archive and install from an external drive and the computer said there wasn't enough memory to install Leopard though the tech said I had enough RAM installed but that the computer wasn't reading the memory available correctly and that I needed a new memory board at a cost of $350.
I had a similar thing happen in December 2007 after I downloaded software updates. I brought my computer into the Apple Store. It seemed there was a "kernal panic." Everytime the tech deleted something it kept coming back "to life" and taking up too much "space" though this was different than not having enough RAM (I'm not terrifically computer saavy). I left the computer there for them to look at and a few days later due to whatever they did it was working again.
When dealing with the current problem a few days ago the tech said it was purely coincidental that the computer stopped working immediately after I downloaded software updates on two different occasions, but I found that very difficult to believe. I put in the installation disc that came with the computer and was able to get through the first steps of installing Tiger without actually beginning to install it, and I saw that the hard drive only had 49mb free and the tech said I needed 51mb to install Leopard. I called an Apple Care tech on the phone and asked if I could reinstall Tiger so that I could at least access the internet and retrieve my emails until I could get the Leopard issue resolved. He said doing so would delete Leopard and all of the documents I had done on it.
I mentioned I used to have my computer set up so I could access both OS9 and OSX on my computer and asked if that was now possible with Tiger and Leopard. He said I would need to go into the Apple Store and have them hook up my computer via firewire to another computer and boot up in target mode so that I could possibly delete some of the files taking up the memory and have enough room to install Leopard, or failing that could at least partition the hard drive and install Tiger until I could get the Leopard issue resolved.
I tried the safe boot someone suggested in a previous thread on this topic, but the computer would not boot up. Does anyone have any other ideas to solve this problem without taking the computer into the Apple Store? And how can I prevent this from happening during software updates in the future? I did not have the option with this last software update to choose only one download at a time. Software Update just started downloading what seemed to be one large update.
Thanks in advance for any help or illumination anyone can provide.

    Kristin,
I'm having similar problem after upgrade on my imac. Hangs with white screen after logging out. Have to press/hold pwr button to shut off, then press to turn on.
I have a LaCie porsche ext hard drive attached by usb. Should I unplug this and try reinstalling mavericks? I didn't remove ext hd during the upgrade, was I supposed too?
    Thanks,
    chris

If it's showing a different Apple ID, you need to either update them from that Apple ID or delete and redownload them when signed into a different one, which may require repurchasing paid applications.

Why can't I purchase after I update my payment detail?

My first suggestion would be to double check and make sure that the changes were saved in the payment information area of your account, to back and check to be sure.
Settings>iTunes and App Stores>Apple ID> Tap your ID. Then Tap View Apple ID. Enter your password and go to Payment Information and check. Check the expiration date, biling address, security code, etc. and then save your changes.
If everything is done successfully, you will get an email from Apple notifying you that they received changes to your account and if these changes were not made by you... Etc, etc. When you get that email, you know that the changes have been confirmed.

  • Can't recover iphone after latest update

Last night I got a prompt to update my iPhone software. I hit ok, it did it's thing and then gave me an error and said it was in recovery mode and I'd need to recover it. Fine. I hit recover, it gets all the way to the end of the process and gives me the error "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)"
Now I have no phone to call apple or my provider.
My computer is totally up to date. Running 10.6.6. I'm running the latest iTunes update. I've tried multiple times. Done restarts. Tried different cables. What is going on?
    Thanks a lot

That doesn't seem to matter, seeing as you have a computer, but don't know how to use the search...
The error 1013 is usually brought upon the hosts file blocking Apple's check. I would recommend checking this, even if you're positive that you never changed it, as many people have made this claim before, but upon checking their hosts, found Apple being blocked.

  • Restart Fails after Software Update

For the past few weeks (I cannot tie down when this started), after carrying out any download that requires a restart through Software Update when I click on the Restart Button the menu bar disappears but the machine will not restart. If I leave it for a minute I get the message that restart has timed out as software update failed to quit. From here on in I cannot do a shutdown or restart from the Apple Menu, I have to do a hard shutdown by powering off. When I power back on the restart happens normally but no software is installed. After I logon I can then select restart from the Apple Menu and I then get the dialog box that gives me the option to install updates and restart or just restart. Selecting Install Updates and restart then works as normal. After restarting again logoff, shutdown and restart options from the Apple menu all work as normal, until I do a software update that requires a restart..... Anyone any ideas on how to fix this? It only happens on my MacBook Pro (migrated originally from Tiger), not on my relatively new iMac which was Leopard from new.

Exactly the same issue too on a iMac G5 upgraded from 10.4, started few weeks ago, very annoying. Makes the usually painless updates a lot more painful.

  • [HALF-SOLVED] Can't do "startx" after recent update

    Hello everyone!
After i updated my system with "pacman -Syu" and rebooted my PC, i got message "FATAL: module "fbcon" not found!" and X failed to start by typing "startx" on the console as i always do.
I have xf86-video-intel and xorg-server 1.7.5 installed. everything from standart repo.
Also, It may be strange that Xorg.0.log ends with some messages about evdev.
don't know what to do to solve this problem. help me please, someone who knows what is it caused by?

If you would have searched at least this forum, you would have found: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=79362
Apparently the FATAL-warning can be ignored. Give us is the output of the logs:
    cat /var/log/xorg.0.log | grep EE
    cat /car/log/xorg.0.log | grep WW
Then we can start making suggestions.

  • Machine won't restart following an iTunes update

Following the download of the latest iTunes update my machine will now not restart! It freezes at the grey apple.
I've read the other enteries on the forum and tried the suggestions so far. Here's a summary of my latest progress
I've zapped the pram - no joy
I've replaced the battery - no joy
I've tried to start up in safe mode - no joy
I've used the open firmware command to open the drive and
tried to boot from the installation disc - disc activity then no joy
I have managed to start the hardware diagnostics disc which runs fine and shows no issues
I can also start the software restore disc, but that seems a bit drastic.
    Help?!

    Joe
Thanks for the link to your great site.
you've helped me make progress but the problem is not yet solved.
I can open the disk utility but when I try to repair the volume I get the error:
"The underlying task reported a failure on exit (-9972)"
I'm about to look round to see what this is and any further help will be much appreciated.

  • After iTunes update, can't connect to remote speakers via Airport Express

I updated to iTunes 10.1.2.17 the other day, and ever since then, I can't connect to my stereo via my Airport Express. I get this message: "An error occurred while trying to connect to the remote speaker 'Airport Express'. The network connection failed."
My Airport Express firmware is up to date and I have not changed any settings since the iTunes update.
Anyone else have/had this problem? Any ideas?

I run Vista and I had the same problem after updating to the latest version of iTunes: Apple TV would indicate "Loading Library" for ever and nothing would happen. This had never happened before.
I tried different tricks like turning on/off home sharing on both iTunes and Apple TV (didn't work), unplugged/plugged Apple TV (didn't work), restore Apple TV (didn't work).
Eventually the solution was actually very simple: go to Firewall settings and make an exception for iTunes. I don't know why that was not necessary before the update, but it made the trick.
