M4v won't play in windows 7

I'm in the process of transitioning to a new PC (Win 7).  I have so many files in my library, I've been keeping them on an external drive for a while now.
I thought the iTunes transition would be as simple as signing in with my account, authorizing the new PC, and then adding the folder on the external drive to iTunes.
The music imported great.  No issues, regardless of file format (apple format, mp3, etc.)  However, none of the movies or tv shows are showing up in iTunes.  When I go directly to the folder and say 'open with iTunes' nothing happens.  It's like it doesn't want to recognize these as legit files, but I only have the one account.
Doing a google search, everything came up on how to convert m4v files to another format.  I just want to play them on my new PC.  Btw, the old PC was Windows 7, too.
Thanks in advance for any hints.

Have you installed QuickTime?  This is required in order for iTunes to play video files.
If you already have, repair your QuickTime.
START/CONTROL PANEL/PROGRAMS N FEATURES/highlight QUICKTIME and click REPAIR button.

When I import a video I recorded to my laptop from my Iphone 5c  it won't play on window media centre or vec or any medium. Please help??? It plays perfect on the phone.

The format from the phone is :
h.264 encoded video, AAC audio. Both standards of MPEG 4.
You need Windows Media Player version 12 or above to play MP4 (or add the codecs to your current version).

  • ITunes won't play in Windows 8.1...help!

I just updated my computer from Window's 8 to 8.1 and now iTunes won't play anything at all. I can open up the iTunes store and everything else, but once I click on a song it will show that it is playing but nothing happens. I even tried moving "QTMovieWin.dll" from  c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\  to  c:\program files (x86)\iTunes but nothing happened after I did that. Is there anything else that can be done to fix this problem? Thanks!

I have searched high and low for the right solution for this issue.  I'm on an HP Envy laptop, running iTunes 12, and just upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I tried the settings for bit rate as suggested above and it still didn't work, but I did solve the problem.
In iTunes I went to Preferences > Playback > Play Audio Using ... and changed the setting from "Direct Sound" to "Windows Audio Session"
Now my iTunes on my laptop works!

  • MOV files won't play on Windows computers

I have a number of MOV files (shot in full 1080 resolution) that won't play on a Windows PC. When I attempt to open them I get a warning stating that Quicktime may need extra files (or plugins?) in order to play the file. When I select the link it takes me to a page with all sorts of other providers such as DivX. With that said, what is the best format to enable smooth playback on a Windows machine?

I am in the same boat. I need to view AVCHD files that were converted to .mov by iMovie on a PC.
I think it is mainly because iMovie isn't really compatible with AVCHD so it converts it to .mov.
But it is not a normal .mov!
Apple loves to help you go from PC to MAC but when you try to go back again, God help you.
I refused to pay the price for a new MacBook so bought a core i7 laptop for less than the cheapest MacBook(white)!
I am starting to believe that Apple suck!
Don't even get me started on the iPhoto and iTunes issues to change back!

  • Compressor creating movs that won't play in Windows

I am trying to make transcode video to play back on an installed HD television set. It is being fed by a Windows XP computer over HDMI using Windows Media Player. I have tried 25 different codecs including avi, wmv and mov. The avi and wmv will play on the pc, but the quality is bad and file size is too big. The movs that I create work fine on my mac but won't play on the pc. The movies load with an error message indicating an unknown file type. The audio track plays but no video.
Is there a "Make PC compatible" button that I am missing?

From what I've experienced, HD Quicktime Codecs are not cross-platform. You could try using AJA's or Blackmagic's free downloadable codecs, which are cross-platform, but I don't know how those codecs perform with Windows Media Player.
Your best bet would be to purchase the Flip4Mac HD WMV codecs:

  • DVD won't play on windows computer  Ever see this prob?

A potential client of mine says he can't play the DVD authored in DVDSP.
"I have not been able to open the DVD and run it. It requires the CinePlayer DVD Decoder Pack 2.3.1-ESD.
Is there another video program available to open the DVD?
I have Windows XP but not this application."
Has anyone run into this issue? The DVD I produced plays fine on stand alone DVD players, my Mac computers and the Window unit my partner in this project has.
To me this sounds like a windows issue or this guy hasn't updated his OS, or he is trying to open the disc like a data disc and not play it like a movie DVD.
I don't want to have probs mastering a boat load of these DVDs. These will be stamped copies so if the person has a DVD player aplication most issues like the above should go away right?
    Brad

Brad - it's definitely down to the client to upgrade his software, nothing you can do about that one! Unless he is saying that he can usually watch DVDs using that software, but this one won't play, it sounds to me that he doesn't have any MPEG decoding hard or software installed.
The other thing that springs to mind is that he should be able to alter the default application that WinXP uses for DVD playback. Again, this is something for him to address, not you... sounds like a case of needing to educate the client a little

  • Local files won't play on Windows 10

All of my local files won't play in spotify in windows 10, please help....

    Hello:
How did you encode the music files? If you used iTunes to rip the music with make sure you have Apple Quicktime player installed and/or check for an update for Quicktime player. Does you music files play in any other music player? Also try to uncheck all music sources log out of the Spotify desktop app and log back into the Spotify desktop app, add music sources back again into the Spotify desktop app and see if local music files play now.
What Spotify desktop app version are you running?

  • DVD won't play in Windows XP

    Hi
I've been working on a iDVD project this week and my burnt DVD will not play on Windows XP machines.
Plays fine on standalone DVD player and on most of the Macs I've played it on but will not play on any Windows XP machines.
Message is: Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

.. I still can't get over the fact that you can't but a DVD in a Windows machine and play it! LOL ...
.. be sure: I didn't believed it either.. asked a friend, who's MS-certified-blablabla .. he told me/confirmed me that old "Mac rumor" ...
and he told me: the app is called Windows Media Player, 'cause it plays Windows Media.. and Microsoft didn't invent the DVD .. so ... ;-))

  • I just purchased Premiere 13 and the video files won't play in Windows Media Player. I have audio but no video. What can I do? I have Premiere 12 and everything works fine with it.

    What can I do?

    Bonan
Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 8.1 64 bit
What are your export settings for this finished video from Premiere Elements 13?
For example - are you using
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVChD
    with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30
    or something different like
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    MPEG
    with Presets = MPEG2 1920 x 1080i30
    or something different ....
We are going to have to get at your export settings which gets us to the properties of the finished video that you are trying to play in Windows Media Player.
If you take your finished video from Premiere Elements 13 and import that into a new Premiere Elements 13 project with Add Media/Files and Folders,
does it import into the new project. And, when the video is in the new project, does it display video and have audio in the Edit area monitor?
We need more details of the properties of the finished video. Knowing that you have no problems with this matter in Premiere Elements 12 and that
the finished video plays in CyberLink are important, but they do not help to figure out what is happening in 13 so that it does not happen again.

  • MPEG4s I make on Mac won't play in windows XP

I made some MP4 videos for someone on my mac and burned them to disc. When they try to play them on their Windows XP machine we get the error message following error message:
Not a valid MP4 file. Either "Wind.mp4" contains no moov atom, or the file has been corrupted
    Thanks for any help

Here's how it went down. Made two mp4 movies for a guy who uses windows.
The first one was from a VHS tape I converted. I have an analog to digital converter that goes right into iMovie. I opened a new project that I created in mp4 instead of DV and imported the video into imovie. Then I exported it out of iMovie as an mp4 file .
The second file was from a vob file I extracted from a DVD using DVDxDV. DVDxDV extracts vob files as quicktime movies. Then using quicktime I exported to mp4 using the quicktime default settings.
I burned them to CD just using the finder.
I tried later to burn them in Toast Titanium but Toast is acting up and won't burn CDs (but come to think of it I never checked for Toast updates after upgrading to Tiger).
    Thanks for your help.

  • Movie in idvd won't play on windows pc

I make lot's of movies with imovie and burn them in idvd. My mac and other dvd players play the movies just fine. However, the windows pc of my co-workjers do not play the movies. Any suggestions for me ? They want to bash Macintosh because I am the Only mac user--I won't give in--but this scenario isn't helping me defend my mac. I hope someone can help me -so I can keep my mac--thanks for any advice!

In this forum some months ago, it was claimed that PC/windows error correction software wasn't very effective. One suggestion is to try the oft-recommended solution to reduce burning errors by using high quality media (Vebatim is a favorite around here; I like Sony on sale) and to burn the DVDs from disk images so you can reduce the burn speed to 1x or 2x with Roxio Toast or Disk Utility.

  • Iphone 5 IOS 8.1.1 videos won't play on windows 8.1

    Hi,
I have recently come across a problem with transferring over videos to my PC from my iphone 5 since installing the recent update 8.1.1.
Prior to this last IOS update, I have always been able to transfer my videos across to my PC and play them using Windows Media Player V.12 with no problems.
Since installing IOS 8.1.1 I am no longer able to view these videos once they have been transferred across to my PC, Media Player stops responding and crashes.  If I right click on the file to view the properties, the folder that the files are in closes instantly.
I am able to view these videos using Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player, Windows Media Player 12 does not appear to be affected in any other way, all other media content appears to be working with no problems.
We have also re-installed Windows Media Player 12 and checked to see if the latest codecs are installed, this makes no difference.
I am able to transfer the videos to another computer using windows 7 and windows media player 12 and they play correctly without any problems.
We have also tried another iphone 5 using 8.1.1 and the same problem occurs on windows 8.1.
All videos taken prior to the latest 8.1.1 continue to play with no issues.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and may know of a way to resolve this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the exact same problem! I thought it was an issue with corrupt files as the videos are not readable as videos on my Windows 8 PC. All videos prior to  doing the update on my phone, work fine.  After a lot of investigating, restoring pc, deleting software...I found that Windows 7 reluctantly reads the videos and an XP  PC has no problem.  It's obviously  an incompatibility issue but the only way I have got round it. is to  upload videos from iphone to youtube and to  then download  using 'freemake' as they  are converted them to  MP4 and the pc has no problem with that  files type.
it's been a nightmare to sort and one that is making me reconsidering having an iphone at all. I love it but really wish I had never done the update.
