OS upgrade/backup

I am trying to upgrade from Mac os x 10.4.11 to snow leopard.  There doesn't seem to be any way for me to back up before I install the new OS.  Any ideas?

To backup you will need an external HD and also either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Both applications will create a bootable clone of your internal HD. Remember first to format the EHD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) prior to creating the clone.

    Hi,
I have bought the January Upgrade and want to do a backup.
I have located the file "iPod Touch App Pack 4A93.ipa" in the Mobile Applications folder (Win XP), but ONLY has a size of 9,49KB. Can someone confirm this? (It seems to be too small)

  • OES and Sles11sp1 upgrade Backup Exec cannot backup nss vols

After successfully upgrading to the latest oes and linux 11 sp1, I now find that backup exec 2010 (ralus) will not find any files to backup in an nss volume. Everything was working fine before the upgrade, and BE can see the nss volume, but finds nothing inside it. Otherwise, all files are visible from other network connections, and I can find no new version of ralus to put things working again.
Anyone got any ideas regarding this matter?

Why not also open a S.R. with Backup Exec? Do they even support their product?

It's not you, seems to be an universal issue. I strongly suggest to open
a SR with Novell. If you post the number here, I see that the efforts
    will get coordinated.

  • Pre upgrade backup

    Hi guys,
We are due to upgrade oracle rac, what are the diffrent options for backing up the linux OS and Oracle cluster/software binaries incase we need to restore to current version ?
Can I simply use cp to backup oracle home /grid home ? plus ocr&voting disk ? is that’s sufficient?

    Hi
Look like you want to backup RAC binaries just in case you have to restore.
You have three or Two homes. Go into each home and use TAR command the out put file save on other mount point. If you to restore the binaries just UNTAR them in the corrosponding home.
If you like to backup database use data pump export or RMAN backup. I hope it will help you.
    Thanks

  • RV082 upgrade backup firmware - advanced

Good morning to everyone, I have a question for the RV082 (Primary firmware ver 2.0.0.19-tm - backup firmware ver 1.3.98-tm) and i would like to ask whether could i upgrade the backup firmware without restarting to it.In other words, how can i upgrade the backup firmware when the primary firmware is active? Thank you in advance.......

Update... I found the original firmware under the updated firmware on Linksys' website.  Downloaded the new firmware even though I'm running Win 2K. I'll post my other problem in another post.

  • Cisco TMS Upgrade (Backup Meetings)

    Hi,
I'm upgrading from TMS from 14.1 to 14.5. Couple of questions.
    * From the admin guide it tells you to backup the SQL database using SQL backup components
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187048%28v=sql.105%29.aspx.
Does this backup the current scheduled meetings ?
    * Does the upgrade effect the current scheduled meetings? If so is there any supported way to backup / restore the current scheduled meetings. There are several re-current meetings in the organisation so need to know if these will be impactd
    Thanks
    Nalaka

Something to note to my reply about the backup option in the TMS installer that I remembered today.  Since TMS 14.4, that backup dialog has been removed.  It's still present in TMS 14.1, the version you're currently running, but after you upgrade past 14.4, you'll need to rely on another method to backup the database.  The TMS install and upgrade guide recommends you use one of these backup methods in the following Microsoft technet article depending on which version of SQL server your'e using, Back Up and Restore of SQL Server Databases.
Something to keep in mind as you're upgrading TMS to different version, take note of the requirements of the newer versions of Windows Server as well as SQL Server.
Also, you said you're going to TMS 14.5, why not upgrade to the most recent release which is 14.6.1?

  • 5508 upgrade/backup controller

If I am concerned about minimizing downtime I would use AP image pre- download option.
    >> I will download 7.6 image on old WLC and push this image to the APs connected to them. When Pre download is completed APs will have primary and secondary image as 7.0 and 7.6 . At this time both my APs and WLC are working with 7.0 image.
    >> Swap the image on APs.
    >> Check if we have right image on APs( show ap image all).
    >> Now in downtime reboot the controller. APs will right away join with 7.6 image(this will save time what APs take to search for new WLC, download the code and then reboot and join the WLC).
    >> Once the APs have joined the old WLC on 7.6 then we can move the APs to new WLC using HA tab.

    I hope that helps.

    Old WLC = WLC1
    New WLC = WLC2
    Here's a proven process:
    1.  Configure WLC2:  Make sure WLC2 has the same firmware as WLC1.  Copy the config of WLC1 to a notepad.  Change the IP addresses.  Copy the new config to WLC2.
    2.  Upgrade the firmware of WLC2 (including the FUS/bootstrap).
    3.  Make sure you configure DNS for WLC2.
    4.  Connect WLC2 to the network and make sure you can remotely access WLC2.
    5.  Upgrade the firmware of WLC1 but DO NOT reboot.
    6.  Pre-download the AP images.
    7.  Move the APs from WLC1 to WLC2.
    8.  Once the APs have moved to WLC2, reboot WLC1.

  • After ERP Upgrade online backup slow down

    Hello,
We have upgrade the system from 4.6c to ECC6.0 , after the upgrade backup is running slow on production. it could be because of Resource requirements for ECC. I would like to know how resource Consummation increase from 4.6c to ECC.
    ECC 6.0
    Solaris 5.10
    Thanks

    > I would like to know how resource Consummation increase from 4.6c to ECC.
Very difficult to impossible to state generally. 4.6c is an ABAP only kernel whereas the Netwaever 7.0 kernel has interfaces to HTTP and SMTP as well as a full internet transaction server integrated. As a rule of thumb one could say you'd need the double the CPU power (in sense of single CPU speed, not number of CPUs) to run at the same speed as your old 4.6c.

  • How do I install a firmware upgrade on a 300 series switch?

I have downloaded the ros file, but can't find how to apply it. I know this information must be out there, but can't find it. Thanks

    Hello Henry,
Once logged into the switch you will want to go to the following location Administration > File Management > Upgrade/Backup Firmware.
From here you will select the file you downloaded and upload it to the switch. Once this process is complete, the firmware will now be located on the switch on image 2.
You will then go to the Active Image tab right below. From here you will change to image 2. Please make sure to save your configuration at this point and then reboot the switch.

  • Time Machine backup history present but inaccessible after Mountain Lion clean install

    Hi all,
A few days ago, I took the Mountain Lion plunge and after performing all the preliminary data copying to external hard drives as well as on last Time Machine backup to my dedicated Time Machine external hard drive, I booted from my ML recovery USB thumb drive, reformatted the internal HD, and proceeded to perform a clean install of OS X 10.8.
The ML install and initial setup completed without a hitch, and I had no difficulty in reconnecting to my existing Time Machine EHD and performing an initial backup of the freshly upgraded Mountain Lion system. It took several minutes in the "preparing backup" phase; but once it got through that, it backed up my entire system (which was basically nothing more than the new OS and iLife at this point) within an hour or so.  Time Machine has since worked reliably in performing the automatic backups every hour.
But here's the problem:  My backup history went back all the way to March 2011 before the ML upgrade, and it still (sorta kinda) does now.  However, although I can see all of the backup history tick marks when I enter TM, the ONLY SELECTABLE backups are from the point where ML was installed and onward.  The previous Lion and Snow Leopard backups are visible; just not selectable.  I also verified that the physical backup folders are still present on my TM EHD dating all the way back to last March.  I ran a verify and repair operation on the TM volume, and it came back clean.  I have disconnected and reconnected the TM EHD to TM and of course rebooted, but no joy.  TM did not force me to "start over" with a new backup as some posters have complained of. And it seems to be working fine otherwise.
Has anyone else had a similar experience after upgrading to ML?  Any thoughts on how I might reconnect to my TM backup history?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How did you put your data back after the erase?
I didn't, or rather I haven't yet.  Basically, all I have done so far is:
Reformat Lion HD and install ML clean from USB thumb drive
Run through initial virgin boot setup, e.g. enter my Apple ID and desired user account info
Change a few preferences (the "use right side of mouse for secondary click" setting first and foremost!)
Configured Time Machine to use pre-existing Time Machine Backups EHD and let it do initial backup (which it simply added on to the existing backup history as I had hoped)
Drag-and-drop copied my saved iTunes library (~50 GB) from my ext. FW drive to my new Home Music folder and confirmed that iTunes was working and able to sync with my iPhone and iPad
Installed the iLife suite from my Bundled Applications DVD and then updated those apps via the App Store
Obviously the iTunes folder is an exception to "I haven't yet", but basically, the Lion's share (pun intended) of my previous data has not yet been copied back from the temporary storage on the EHD.
The reason you can't see the backups of the old home folder from the new one is simply that they have different names.
Yes, I know that now.  Everything was fine all along.  I just didn't realize that TM [quite sensibly] grays out any backup history finder windows and right-hand-side tick marks that contain no backup of the folder currently in focus.  Since the folder I had in focus was one that didn't exist before I installed Mountain Lion, there was nothing to access except for the most recent post-upgrade backups.
    Thanks much for your help.

  • Upgrade from 8.1.7.4 to 9.2.0.6

I'm planning to upgrade my 8.1.7.4 DB to 9.2.0.6 My question is concerning the order of steps to get there, should I
    install 9.2.0.1
upgrade DB from 8.1.7.4 to 9.2.0.1
apply patchset to get to 9.2.0.6
    OR
    install 9.2.0.1
apply patchset to get to 9.2.0.6
upgrade DB from 8.1.7.4 to 9.2.0.6
Also, I believe I've read there is no downgrade procedure to get back to 8.1..4 from 9.2.0.6. Is this true? Due to space limitations I'll probably end up deinstalling 8.1.7.4 before installing 9.2.0.6.
    Anly help is greatly appreciated.

please give the steps which u followed while upgrading from 8.1.7.4 to 9.2.0.6**Please note that my upgrade was on AIX 5.2
Here are the steps I followed, based off the "Oracle9i Database Migration" docs:
    **Also see MetaLink Note:214887.1 & Note:159657.1
==> Install 9.2.0.1 (to new HOME destination)

    ==> DB Upgrade
-copy parameter file from 8i to 9i ORACLE_HOME/dbs
-copy password file from 8i to 9i ORACLE_HOME/dbs
-adjust parameter file by removing obselete init parameters and adjust deprecated init parameters
-Make sure the SHARED_POOL_SIZE initialization parameter is set to at least 48 MB.
-Make sure the PGA_AGGREGATE_TARGET initialization parameter is set to at least 24 MB.
-Make sure the LARGE_POOL_SIZE initialization parameter is set to at least 8 MB.
-Make sure the COMPATIBLE initialization parameter is properly set for the new Oracle9i release (
-Make sure the DB_DOMAIN initialization parameter is set properly.
-set REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE to NONE in the parameter file
-make sure that the following environment variables point to the new release 9.2 directories:

-Connect to the database instance as a user with SYSDBA privileges
    -SQL> STARTUP MIGRATE
    -SQL> SPOOL upgrade.log
    -run script u0801070.sql
The script you run creates and alters certain dictionary tables. It also runs the catalog.sql and
catproc.sql scripts that come with the new 9.2 release, which create the system catalog views and all
the necessary packages for using PL/SQL.
-Display the contents of the component registry to determine which components need to be upgraded:

  • HT5381 I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and attempting to upgrade to Mavericks....installation completes and a message appears stating that my computer will restart in x seconds.  I then get a message "Application install OS X Mavericks failed to quit". A

IMac upgrade from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks errors by failing to restart computer........after install message states that "your computer is restarting in x seconds"...then window appears that "application install OS x Mavericks failed to quit"...try to log out again, quit install OS x Mavericks and choose apple menu to log out...........this does not work!

Are you running OS X Server (the forum this question was posted in), or are you running OS X?  If you're not sure what that difference is and why I'm asking it, then you're probably running OS X and are very likely not running OS X Server here.
Hopefully you have a pre-upgrade backup of your data, on the off chance something has either already gone badly wrong already, or if something goes wrong with the following...
To force the quit here and to force the shutdown here, press and hold the power button for ~10 seconds.
If you don't have a backup already and if the box doesn't reboot, then you'll want to boot from the 10.6 DVD (of OS X or OS X Server) and create a backup — it won't be a particularly good backup of the OS X or OS X Server system, but at least you'll have access to your own files and related data.  This backup because recovering from a badly-failed upgrade might involve reinstalling OS X.

  • Upgrade to OS X 10.10 from 10.6.8

I would be grateful for advice about upgrading my OS.
I have got a MacBook Pro bought in September 2013 in the UK which is running under OS X 10.6.8, with 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB of memory, and a 500GB hard drive, mostly unused. Some software I've just bought needs OS X 10.7 or later so I intend to upgrade.
Looking on the web, I think my machine can support OS X 10.10, and I gather that it's a simple, though lengthy process, to upgrade from the App Store. Since I'm starting from OS X 10.6.8 I understand it's free.
The important non-Apple applications I'm running are MS Office for Mac and Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
I'm running Time Machine to an external hard drive, so I understand that if anything goes wrong I can restore my system and data to what they were before.
Should I go to OS X 10.9 or earlier rather than 10.10? I'm unlikely to make much use of whizzy new features; performance is more important to me.
What can go wrong? What precautions should I take?
    Seamus O'Connell

Many thanks to Eric, dwb, and Jimmy for all this information. I’m still digesting it, and the further information in the links within the links. I have made significant progress.
Right now I would be grateful for thoughts on further questions, in bold in the notes below. It's quite likely that these notes go into more detail than you want to read. If so, please just look at the specific questions.
    GENERAL PERFORMANCE
I replaced my 4GB of RAM by 8GB from Crucial (arrived next day). It made a great difference. I’m now considering replacing my hard drive by an SSD. That would be tied in with a new strategy for backups, below, in which I could use the HD for a clone backup.
What might I have got wrong with the Apple Hardware Test? I held down D while restarting and while powering on but nothing special happened. The machine started up normally.
I uninstalled Carbonite. It kept getting the colour wheel in the menu bar and in System Preferences and used a lot of CPU even though it said it was idle. I might reinstall it if its problem with Yosemite gets sorted out – my subscription runs until August.
I had problems with Dropbox. They now seem to be cleared, not quite sure why. Seem to have to run it every so often to get it into the menu bar, then it disappears again.
    SECURITY
Any suggestions for an anti-virus product on a flash drive which I could run from time to time? JimmyCMPIT suggests this. I got rid of Sophos, but I would like to be able to check for malware which affects Window machines – I also use a PC.  ClamXav get lots of mentions but several reviews don’t think much of it.
I installed the Firefox add-on NoScript. I shall do my banking using Firefox with NoScript from a user account (which I would anyway), on both Mac and PC. NoScript is freeware but if it turns out to be as good as claimed I shall make a donation.
I cleared the download folders in all my accounts and will keep them empty.
I went through the settings in all browsers in all accounts – auto-update, checking options allowed, add-ons and plugins. And auto-update for OS and MS Office. On both Mac and PC I have four user accounts and an administrator account. On the Mac I have Safari and Firefox, on the PC IE, Firefox, and Chrome.
    BACKUP AND RECOVERY
Two or three years ago my hard drive failed. I had to rebuild everything from scratch. I thought that since I had Carbonite it would not be much problem – I did not then have Time Machine. In fact it was quite difficult and took a very long time, even with very effective assistance from Carbonite support staff.
A bootable clone would save a lot of time. It seems to me that I would make a clone backup just before a major upgrade, in case the upgrade turned out to be unviable. Once the upgrade showed that it was stable I would overwrite the pre-upgrade backup by a post-upgrade backup to fall back to subsequently if necessary. After that I would every so often replace it by a more up-to-date backup. I’d keep it off-site.
Carbon Copy Cloner seems to be the popular choice.
If I bought an SSD drive could I put the current internal drive into an enclosure and use it for clone backups? Alternatively I could use an old external drive I’ve got.
What sort of SSD should I buy? The Crucial website lists several for my machine (MacBook Pro 13” mid-2009). The cheaper ones have slower write speeds, from 150 MB/s to 370 Mb/s. How significant would that be?
Will I have to deal with TRIM?
Is it possible to recover from the bootable clone then tell Time Machine to restore all user files created/changed since the date the clone was created?
One of Eric’s links suggests also making occasional off-site copies of important user data on non-rewriteable media, i.e. DVD-R. I could get everything important onto four disks.
I would set up a similar backup strategy for my PC, with Windows 7 built-in back-up and Carbonite taking the place of Time Machine.
Does the strategy below look sensible?
    Mac:
    Internal hard drive: SSD
Bootable clone: HD - before then after major upgrades
On-site contemporaneous user data backup: Time Machine on external HD
Off-site contemporaneous user data backup: None, unless Carbonite gets fixed
Non-rewriteable user data backups: 4 x DVD-R - say two sets cycling monthly, kept off-site
    PC:
    Internal hard drive: HD
Bootable clone: HD - before then after major upgrades
On-site daily user data backup: Windows 7 backup on external HD
Off-site contemporaneous user data backup: Carbonite
Non-rewriteable user data backups: 4 x DVD-R - say two sets cycling monthly, kept off-site

  • Upgrading from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 - Will I lose any data or application?

    Hi gang,
I forgot that I have a 10.5.6 family upgrade disc. I've upgraded my kid's Mac Mini and was not sure about upgrading my MacBook Pro then.
So I'm thinking I should upgrade my MacBook Pro now but I am not sure if I will lose any data or application (and application specific information). Can you folks please clarify and/or provide best way to perform the upgrade?
I use my MacBook Pro on a daily basis from office document, browsing, audio recording and editing, video editing and photo editing that I can't imagine my MacBook Pro having a problem.
I'm also hoping that with the upgrade, my Superdrive will somehow come back to life and be useful again.
    Here's my MacBook Pro info:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
    SMC Version: 1.16f11
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled

I'm also hoping that with the upgrade, my Superdrive will somehow come back to life and be useful again.
    Unlikely.
That usually means a hardware problem. No operating system update will fix hardware problems.
I'd get it fixed by an authorized service center. If you are in the U.S. there are places that can do it cheaper if you are out of warranty:

    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
Before doing any upgrade, backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
That way you avoid the risk of losing everything.
