Trouble compiling for printed documentation

hello, i am having trouble compiling a new document layout i
have created, i have followed peter grainges instructions on his
website but it always fails to generate straight away. Im using
Robohelp x5 with word 2000, does anyone have any ideas?
thanks steve

Was RH installed on the PC you are using with you logon or
that of the person whose job you have taken over? It sounds very
much like the latter and this is exactly what I would expect to
happen.
Try creating a new project with just a couple of topics and
printing from that. It will likely also fail. If it does that
pretty much confirms my theory. Uninstall and reinstall RH with
your logon and with admin rights attached and the problem will
likely go away.

  • Rh 10 can't produce printed documentation.

    I have a small project of about 20 topics so far and tried to produce printed documentation as PDF and as Word, but neither would work. I kept getting an errow that said:
    Waiting for Printed Documentation VBA Macros to be registered.
    Failed to register Printed Documentation VBA Macros.
    Then Robohelp freezes and I have to use the Task Manager to close it. After it closes I see this error message.
    I looked at online help for Word,  about disabling macros which you can access in Word's Trust Center. But the Help advised against it, says it's dangerous to disable macros. I'm not sure how to fix this. Any ideas?
    I have Windows 8, and am saving to a local drive.

    I hope you mean "enabled" the macros.

    Hold down the option key and select
     ▹ System Information...
    from the menu bar. In the window that opens, select
    Hardware ▹ USB
    from the list on the left. On the right you should now see a list of all connected USB devices, as well as some built-in components. Is the device shown?

    hello everyone, im pretty new to robohelp and have had no

    project so i did and i added it to the table of contents but..

    Welcome to the forum.
    Common problem. When you first create the printed document,
    it takes your TOC as the default layout at THAT time. Thereafter it
    is quite independant.
    So go to the print layout where you see what looks like the
    TOC and you can then add the new topic to the print layout.
    Sometimes people think this is a bug but it is by design. Not
    everyone wants the print layout to be the same as their TOC.
    Take a look at my website. There's a comprehensive topic on
    printing from RH.

  • Trouble changing paper type for printing

    I downloaded Photoshop Elements 11 to a new computer (with much more memory and speed that old computer) but now Photoshop does not work as well. When I  try to change the paper type for printing, the setting is stuck at "plain paper" and there are no other options available. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem?

    It sounds like a printer driver issue, not a PS issue. Can you update your printer driver on the new computer?

  • Problems with RH 9, CBT, and Printed Documentation

    When I upgrade an x5 project in the new RH9, all appears to go fine until I try to generate the Printed Documentation. I was disappointed that the printed documentation STILL requires so much cleanup. Text tagged with the Online condition sometimes displays on some topics, even when Online is excluded from the output. Also, some of the cleanup issues surrounding headings and index entries are still necessary.
    The four biggest issues are:
    1) If a "book" TOC heading also has content (a topic associated with it), a double-heading appears in the printed output. You have to manually remove all these extra headings in the cleanup process.
    2) All index entries appear in the paragraph BEFORE the actual heading they mark, instead of after the heading, resulting in the Index not being correct (if a heading appears at the top of the page, the Index points to the previous page where the index entry resides, instead of the correct page). I have to manually go through the entire document and move each index entry to the paragraph AFTER the heading it marks.
    3) Robohelp ignores the exclusion of Online conditions on some random topics. There is a workaround to "trick" Robohelp, but it takes *a lot* of time to do. To "trick" Robohelp, I had to generate a printed manual and make a list of all topics that "slipped" through. And, then edit each topic where the online condition was ignored, by adding an extra, empty paragraph to the end of each topic that had:
    ·         a single paragraph of text (aside from header and footer info)
    ·         ends with bulleted list (and no extra paragraph marker following)
    ·         ends with a table (and no extra paragraph marker following)
    ·         ends with a figure (and no extra paragraph marker following)
    ·         ends with see also\How do I\misc button text (and no extra paragraph marker before the seealso/how do I listings)
    4) I noticed that when I opened a topic for the first time in Robohelp, the Online condition sometimes gets applied to incorrectly tagged text (it wasn't tagged this way in the x5 content).  This requires me opening each topic in the upgraded project, and checking each topic to make sure the online condition is applied correctly in each one (a very tedious process, especiallly if you have a doc set of over 1 mil words!).
    Expected results:
    Printed doc does not contain double headings. Index entries appear after headings. Conditional text behaves as it is supposed to behave (and if you tell Robohelp to exclude the ONLINE condition, it does it for ALL topics).
    Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for this? Yes, I have the latest build. We held off on upgrading to previous releases of Robohelp because of the Printed Manual problem too (it seems like each version created more clean up work). :-(  I logged a bug on the Adobe forum.Any and all suggestions appreciated.  Thanks!

    Mr. Grainge,
    Thank you so much for your thoughtful answers back!  I appreciate you taking time out to write such a thorough reply. I hope Adobe appreciates you!  You're number one in follow ups!
    Unfortunately, your answers did not solve my problems. But, you did give me some ideas on where the problems could be occurring. So, thank you!!  Before I begin: In answer to your question, yes I *am* using the supplied Style Mapping template (I never had luck with the custom one myself). Also, I am going to hold off on replying to 1) and 2), but I'd like to share my answer on 3) and 4), which is really just what I need to get Printed Documentation working in Robohelp 9 the same way it worked in x5.
    A little history:  I have a set of about 50 help projects that span many versions of our company's product, and multiple versions of Robohelp (some even go back to the 90s!). They even include some help projects that were originally in Frame/WebWorks but were later ported to Robohelp. There's a lot of history to them.
    Investigating the Problem: When I opened an x5 project in RH 9, I noticed that some of the timestamps on the .htm files didn't match the rest of the files. It turned out, that these very same files that were the ones giving me problems with the Conditional text!  That's when your thoughts about the mapping came to mind...As I said, my project spanned mutiple versions of Robohelp. I wondered if some of the coding on the .htm page was being parsed incorrectly on upgrade, and if if that was the reason why RH couldn't update the pages (which explain the unchanged timestamps). In other words, I wondered if Robohelp was mapping the styles correctly on import. So, I compared these unupgraded .htm files with ones that did upgrade, to see if there was something on the code page that could be causing the problem.
    Solution to Fix 3) and 4) above:
    I'm going to list out everything that I did below, however, not everything on this list applies to everyone. But, hopefully it will help you, if you ever run into this scenario yourself, and it might give you some ideas on how to get your HTML files working. So, before upgrading, here is what I did:
    I opened my old CSS in a text editor and removed all the Robohelp autogenerated comments.
    In Homesite, I did a bunch of Search and Replaces on a copy of the older x5 project.  I looked for code that may have been generated in an earlier version of RH,and for unusual structures in the meta and style declaration area that could be causing conflicts. Here is a list of my search and replaces below:

    After I did these all these search and replaces in the copy of the x5 version of the project, I opened the project again in RH 9 and upgraded it.  After the upgrade, I checked the timestamps on the .htm files to make sure they all changed.  They did!  It worked!  Everything upgraded properly this time... I tested the Printed Manual output and no conditional text slipped through this time. Yay!
    In Summary:
    This is what I learned if you are having problems with Conditional text and Printed Manuals in an upgraded RH project:
    Always make backups of your older projects before you upgrade anything. I know this is elementary, but I thought it was worth reminding.
    Check the timestamps of the files after you upgrade the project. If there are a group of files with timestamps that aren't similar to the rest of the files, chances are Robohelp was having trouble converting those files.
    Try looking at the HTML code in those files and see if anything looks out of the ordinary. Some examples are above.
    If you have already ported the RH project and it's too late to go back, go look at the file timestamps anyhow. For all the older files, try opening each one in Robohelp and add a space or something (to force RH to change it), and save it. I didn't have the time to verify this, but it seemed on most instances: when I forced RH to save the file manually, it updated correctly and the problem with the conditional text went away.  (This option takes longer, especially if you have to do each page individually, but it's worth a try, IMHO.)
    Aside from the initial Printed Manual woes, which are resolved, the upgrade process from RH 9 really was seamless!  Best I have ever seen!  Everything just works!  Awesome is a word that comes to mind.
    Printed Documentation output does work on upgrade, but in my opinion is: it is no better than it was before, in previous versions.
    I wish there were more fixes to the Printed Manual output. When you have a product help system that spans multiple versions, contains over 2.5 million words, and 10,000+ topics, having a lot of cleanup on the production end is costly. What use to take a person on my team less than a day to generate 50+ PDFs in FrameMaker, takes 4-5 weeks man-time in RH.  I will outline my opinions in my next reply to this thread.
    Thanks again, Mr. Grainge!

  • Need advise on preparing .ai files for print house for labels design

    Greetings!
    I just got a freelance job to do label design for commercial products (cleaning, food products, etc).
    Its a huge task as the company have lots of products in the market and they decided to drop the design
    company that were doing the labels for them and hire me to be the main designer.
    Since my main work with Illustrator and Photoshop is been for Web Design and screen graphics,
    I am not sure how to use Illustrator CS5 the best way for preparing the final files to send to a print house
    according to European or US norms, I would like to have some help from other users that maybe are experience with this kind of job.
    My main concerns for now are:
    1. Should I send .ai or .eps?
    2. Pantones or CMYK ? And how to create the artboards that show the measures of the labels and the pantone colors palette
        (I have seen examples on some prints that have show me ), but have no idea if Illlustrator already have a template/tools for that.
    3. About the size of the labels, if its a straight shape, like a square, you make the artboard on that size and just put some bleed,
        but since most products labels come in many shapes, how do you work around it?
       Since the artboard can´t have the same shape as the labels , will the white background being print?
    4. When using effects like highlights, reflections, especially in Titles, how do you create the pantones for that ?
    Hoping to have some help from the community here, you can send me some links, tuts,
    everything that can help me to understand all this kind of process, I will be much appreciate.
    Thanks!

    Some of the following (but not all) repeats, but elaborates on or clarifies what others have said.
    First, though: While I certainly don't mean to discourage you, you will be far better off getting started if you realize this:
    Designing for commercial-quality print is a hugely different world from designing for the web. You are now dealing with characteristics and limitations of real-world, physical machines, inks, substrates, and many-step workflows. The most tragic (and potentially disasterous) error web-only designers (and their clients) make is naively thinking that moving from web design to print design is a simple lateral move involving nothing more than a few quick answers to a bullet list of questions (CMYK vs. spot, etc., etc.) If you fall into that camp, you are asking for serious and costly trouble.
    A user forum like this is a very poor place to educate yourself. Forums like this are populated by more beginners than experts, many of whom are far too eager to post answers. More often than otherwise, answers are--if not downright wrong--not best-practice.
    You need to gain a working knowledge of the printing processes with which you wll be dealing. Take a class at the local tech school. Visit the printing houses (and don't carry a designer's chip on your shoulder). Look for any opportunity to get your fingers dirty; offer to do some grunt-work in a press room to gain exposure. Read authoritative books on the subject.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    f1. Should I send .ai or .eps?
    Nowadays, PDF is the preferred delivery format for whole documents. If the printing house is placing the artwork in a program that cannot place PDF as a spot graphic, it is conceivable that they may need EPS. Depends on the printing house's workflow. In print work, you need to communicate with the printing house--and you need to learn to speak their language.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    2. Pantones or CMYK ?
    Don't say "Pantones." Pantone is a company. Say "spot color." Pantone makes both process and spot inks. Pantone is not the only source for spot color. Your question is "spot color or CMYK process." The answer depends on the specific project.
    Labels may involve CMYK process, spot colors, or a combination of the two. You can't just add colors to your design willy-nilly. You have to plan and design for it. It depends on the printing budget, the printing capabilitites of the printing house, the printing method, and even the design (which may affect the substrate, which may not be suitable for process).
    When designing for print, don't think in terms of colors. Always think in terms of inks, because that's what you're really dealing with. Each time you add an ink, you add a workflow process, and therefore cost. As soon as you add a number of inks in the design that exceeds the number of inkwells on the press on which it will be run, you have just necessitated another press pass.
    Labels also commonly involve clear or translucent inks (varnishes), liquid lamination (flood or spot), metallic inks, and/or foils. Each of those count as an additional ink or even a different work process. Sometimes certain inks require drying time after previously-laid inks, which also affects costs.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    And how to create the artboards that show the measures of the labels and the pantone colors palette
    Again, best practice depends on the printing house and its workflow. For example, it can be a no-brainer labor (i.e.; money) savings to gang multiple instances of a label design onto a design page (Artboard) set up to the size of the press sheet.
    It can be advantageous to draw die cuts on a separate Layer, also ganged to match the artwork layout. Same may apply to foils, varnishes, and embosses. It's often advantageous to draw trim and fold marks in the bleed area of the page layout. It's often advantageous to add registration marks in a press-sheet layout.
    Again, best-practice depends on the project--but the economical and turn-around advantages can be significant.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    (I have seen examples on some prints that have show me ), but have no idea if Illlustrator already have a template/tools for that.
    Whenever you catch yourself thinking "I have no idea if Illustrator..."--read the instructions.
    Most graphics programs (including Illustrator) provide options for including basic "printer marks"  (trim and registration marks, separation labels) outboard of the page size. That doesn't mean it isn't often advantageous to add your own. For example, the auto printer marks setting will only add one set of trim marks for the whole page. That's pretty useless in a multi-up layout, which is quite common in label design.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    ...but since most products labels come in many shapes, how do you work around it?
    Pages (Artboards in Illustrator) are rectangular. One typically provides die cuts (and/or varnishes, foils, embosses, etc., etc.)  as elements drawn accurately on a Layer dedicated to the purpose.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    Since the artboard can´t have the are same shape as the labels , will the white background being print?
    There is no "background." This is an object-based program. Where there is no object, there is nothing. By default, even white fills don't mean "white ink"; they mean "no ink." (Remember, think inks, not colors.)
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    4. When using effects like highlights, reflections, especially in Titles, how do you create the pantones for that ?
    Illustrator is primarily a vector based drawing program. Vector graphics are by nature and even by definition sharp edged. When vector programs try to provide "soft & fuzzy" features, they do it in either of two ways: either by programmatically creating additional vector paths and parameters (blends, grads, mesh grads), or by resorting to creation of non-vector "effects" (raster images). Whether such features correctly handle spot colors depends on the feature, and even on the version of the program.
    So whenever working with spot color--in any program--you have to stay consciously aware of what you are actually doing (what kind of objects you are creating) when you apply such features. That's why it does no good in a user forum to speak of nebuous designerly terms like "highlights" when you ask technical questions. In order to get a correct answer, you ultimately have to state the kind of objects you are dealing with (and feature, and version, etc.).
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    1. PDF?? I only use .pdf to show the client the designs before approval but never as final file...also I have heard from some many places that if the print house needs to open the file on a different design program the best is to send them .eps
    PDF is a delivery format. As such, it is very versatile. Design comps is only one of its many uses. But PDF is not meant to be an editable format. When you deliver a PDF that was created by Illustrator and which is fully editable on the receiving end, you are really embedding in the file a full second version of the file as native AI content. Whether this AI-native content is included is controlled by you when you export the PDF.
    Editing PDFs that do not have the AI-native content embedded can be very cumbersome and problematic. Again: PDF is a delivery format, not an editing format. Ideally, the printing house should not have to edit your press-ready files. It is supposed to be up to you to build them correctly. That should be your goal.
    I expressly forbid printing houses from editing my delivery files. If an edit is needed, it comes back to me, and I make the edits. If a printing house chooses to edit one of my files without permission--and a problem result--they eat it; not me.
    Yes, yes, if print-side minor editing (like the afore-mentioned ingredients boilerplate scenario) is part of the established workflow, that's fine; its assumedly been agreed upon as the cost-efficient workflow. But generally speaking, the kind of designer who routinely relies upon the printing house as a "safety measure" to fix his files is...well...exactly the kind of designer I would not hire.
    By the way: Hearing something "from many places" (especially in online user forums) in this business is no indication of correctness or best-practice. Quite often, the most-cited advice is the bad advice. Case-in-point: The ever-cited myth that everything for print should be rasterized to 300 ppi. 300 ppi is usually needless oversampling. This is especially true in reference to mere raster effects like those controlled by Illustrator's Document Raster Effects Resolution setting. 300 ppi is almost never needed for the most common uses of such effects: blurry drop shadows, glows, etc., etc. "Fuzzy" is the very purpose of those effects. All you have to concern yourself about is the potential for visible pixelation, which is directly tied to halftone ruling.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    ...what I was mention is to be able create like a table where you list the pantones use, same time to put measures guides on the artboard itself, is this possible to do in illustrator?
    Again, separation names are included in the Printer Marks option of the Print Dialog. See the documentation. Depending upon your delivery format and workflow, the printing house may not even use Illustrator's printer marks; they may use those in one of their prepress programs.
    But you should always check the seps before sending a press-ready file. You can do this in AI's print dialog, or in Acrobat Pro. Regardless, it's your job to make sure the project color-separates correctly. It is very common to "finish" a job thinking you have been very careful and everything is right. It is just as common to preview the seps and find an object on the wrong separation plate, or knocking out something it shouldn't, or overprinting something it should knock out.
    (There's also the whole matter of trapping, which this thread has yet to mention.)
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    ...imagine I have a label that is a star with 200x200 px, and the artboard is white background with 300x300px,
    I will add (with as much force as I can muster) my admonition to that which has already been given: when talking about actual, physical measure, forget about the web. Forget about Photoshop's rulers. Forget about pixels. A pixel is not a unit of measure. If you think it is, tell me: How big, in inches, is a pixel? I might as well ask you "how high is up?"
    If you tell a printing house that the trim size of your document is 600 by 1200 pixels, he will (and should) laugh at you.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    if I print the artboard on my laser printer I get the label with the background also, so how does the print house manage to
    not have the background of the artboard when they print?
    If you print the artboard on your laser printer, you do not "get the background." Think about it: Do you have any white toner in your laser printer? (Think inks, not colors.)
    All the above is offered in a spirit of helpfulness (and some tongue-in-cheek jest). Take it as such. Bottom line, though--and this is not meant to be the least bit insulting--unless the company you have just contracted with is a small mom & pop shop and/or has very basic labeling projects, it really sounds as if you are already in well over your head. I am certainly not saying any of this is rocket science. It isn't. A dedicated person can learn its ins-and-outs in relatively short time if that time is well spent. But an online user forum is a very error-prone, incomplete, inefficient, and therefore poor way to learn it. It doesn't sound like you have that much time to waste.

  • Changing the order for printing portfolio files in adobe acrobat 9 pro

    Does anyone know how to change the order for printing pdf files that are part of a portfolio in adobe acrobat 9 pro?  The documentation seems to say that it prints files alphabetically by filename rather than by the internal sort order.  This won't work for me. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Question1: No.
    Question2: No.

  • Unable to Generate Printed Documentation in PDF Format

    This past week I started having a consistent error when attempting to generate a Printed Documentation layout. This error reads "Internal error encountered,  Failed to generate Printed Documentation."  Prior Printed Documentation builds on this same project completed fine. Nothing was done to the Help project between the times when this worked and when it no longer was able to create Printed Documentation.
    I receive this error even if I generate an entirely new "blank project" build, and then attempt to create a Printed Documentation build from this new blank project.  Researching this error, I see this has been a reoccuring problem with this product for some time. The few threads that list the problem as having been "fixed" provide resolution steps that have not worked in my case. Right now I am waiting for our IT Helpdesk people to re-install the Suite. Hopefully this will resolve this problem.
    Additional information on this problem - PDF Printed Documentation is failing - the HTML build works fine. If I select just a .DOC Printed Documentation output, this also works correctly. The resulting Word document looks good, although hyperlinks do not work within this Word document. I have reloaded Office 2003 as a troubleshooting effort, but this has nbot resulted in any change in symptoms.
    The entire error text is enclosed below, although several other people have also done this in past entries. The few lines that read "Warning, and then report a style issue is NOT the problem here. As stated earlier, when I do this same Printed Documentation build on an entirely new "blank project" it does not work, and the Output text in that case does not contain any such "Warnings" about Styles.

    I am pretty sure nobody will have any fix suggestions that work to solve this problem, but I am making this entry for historical purposes. I will add an entry stating whether the Suite reload resolves this issue.

    If I select ONLY the Word DOC Output format in the Printed Documentation
    setup, the output is created without an error (output text below).  Links do work within
    this Word document (a symptom change since installing patch 8.0.2).
    When I use this Word document to create a PDF (using the Adobe PDF
    printer driver) a PDF is successfully created, however no bookmarks are
    created in the bookmarks panel and none of the links in this PDF work
    (although they are created looking like they will work, i.e., blue
    underlined text).

  • Unable to generate printed documentation

    I am running RoboHelp 9 HTML using Microsoft Word 2010 on a Windows 7 machine.
    Whenever I try to generate printed documentation using a single source layout that is set up for generating either a .docx file or a .doc file the program hangs up after printing the output message "Processing Topics". This occurs with the simple "Test" sample provided by Adobe that contains only one topic as well as with a more complicated project.
    I read some posts that said things about anti-virus software that may affect RoboHelp. On my system the security department at my company has control of that, so I am not really sure what anti-virus software I have. When I look in my "All Programs" list under the "Start" menu, I do not see any anti-virus software programs except something called "System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection". I believe this is the anti-virus software that the security department uses, and there is an icon for it in my System Tray. Has anyone ever heard of issues involving that software and RoboHelp?
    Meanwhile any other insights any of you may have into this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Are you generating to a local drive or a network drive? If the latter, try the former.

  • Footer image not resizing in printed documentation

    RH11
    Does anyone know why an image inserted into a footer master page is not automatically resizing to the width of the printed page when applied to a print layout and output to Word? If you insert an image into the body of a topic or a master page and generate printed documentation, the image automatically resizes.
    I'm trying to insert a high-res footer image (300 dpi) into my footer so that it appears on every page, but at the moment it's being embedded at full-size.
    Thanks
    Jonathan

    Firstly, your better off using liststyles than paragraph list styles, I screwed around a long time before I had to set everything to liststyles rather than paragraph ones. So dont worry about that.
    The first issue, of not seeing the style - it is there, if you open the Styles tab on screen (click in a topic to get the cursor, then Format > Styles), not just the dropdown like youve shown youll see a list of all your styles, almost, it will show paragraph styles, click the drop-down and select All available styles, this will display your list styles as well!
    Im not sure about the style settings, I have the same text setting applied in my list style as I use for my 'normal' text. Though I think you can select the text in a list and apply a paragraph style to it....i just tried and it worked, but to be on the safe side you might want to set the text formatting in the list style css too..
    mine looks like this
    li.NumberList {
        font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif;
        font-size: 10pt;
        color: #524C45;
        list-style: decimal;
        margin-bottom: 6pt;
        margin-top: 6pt;
    As for printed formats not indenting lists, this is an issue. So far I have found no way around it because you cannot map a  list styles in RH to a list style in Word. This has also created errors for line spacing and indents - and  I found the indents are severly messed up when using list styles in snippets. Everytime I create printed documentation I have to manually fix it, a pain but it doesnt take too long....you could use macros etc to speed it all up for you.
    Submit a Wish Form.
    Hope it helps.

  • Images not in printed documentation

    When generating printed documentation from RH7 (selecting
    embed images, MS Word doc, etc.), the images do not show up in the
    results. All I see are the {bmc <file name>.bmp} references.
    I know this worked in version 5 and I read the release update for
    7.0.1 (which I installed) that indicates it was fixed; but no joy.
    BTW, I have tried this with a new test document, re-booted the
    computer, etc.
    What is going on here?

    A point of interest with this problem. I have noticed that,
    with this installation, when I highlight a true code image in my
    Word project file (indicated by {bmc <file name>.bmp} ) then
    click the "New Help Image" button (or use Ctrl-G) the image view on
    the General tab (Insert Help Image Window) is vacant. This is
    interesting, in that, as I recall in RH5 it would show the graphic
    that was selected. For some reason this installation is not making
    the connection back to the inserted image. I'm thinking this is the
    root of the problem. Now, the question is: How do I correct it?
    Also, you will note that I previously indicated "this
    installation". This is due to my experimenting with an installation
    on a different computer (it never having any prior version of a RH
    installation) and the Printed Documentation feature works - sort
    of. The issue I see on that computer is at the end of the process
    RH7 shuts down. It doesn't lock up, it literally closes before the
    final step where the pop up dialog box indicating the process
    completed, and provides the view file button, is shown. However, I
    can find the word document it created an view it - interesting
    behavior.

  • Error when trying to create printed documentation in RH 7

    Hello,
    I've created a WebHelp project in RH 7 that I'm trying to
    make a PDF for, as well. An error always appears when trying to
    generate printed documentation, even if only the PDF option or the
    Word option is selected. RH 7 processes and builds each of the
    pages, index, images, etc. It gets to the very end on the status
    bar and an error appears that it failed to generate the PDF.
    In the output view, I see that it successfully processed
    everything until the end when it says (the last four lines are the
    error):
    Updating Table of Contents...
    Updating Index...
    Saving 'GVE_Help_.doc'...
    Generating 'GVE_Help_.pdf'...
    Failed the generate PDF file '(The path is written here but
    has been removed for this post)'...
    Failed to save 'GVE_Help_.doc'...
    Cleaning up temporary files...
    Internal error encountered, Failed to generate Printed
    Documentation.
    Is there any way to get the Printed Documentation to work
    properly in RH 7? I receive the same error for any of the WebHelp
    projects I've opened in RH 7. I'm using Windows XP and have Word
    2003 on my PC if that helps. I believe, but not too sure, RoboPDF
    is still on my PC. May this have something to do with it?
    Thanks so much, in advance, for any feedback and help.

    Try generating just to Word and then creating the PDF from
    there. There is a known problem which affects some users but not
    others. Cause not known.

    Seems like the Java EE container is looking for the Java compiler. Try installing the Java Development Kit (JDK) and respecify your JAVA_HOME accordingly. HTH.

  • Application Error while generating printed documentation

    I have Rh 10 installed in my 64-bit machine with Windows 7 OS.
    The problem is when I click Printed Documentation and click Next in the Printed Documentation screen, Rh crashes.
    Without clicking Next, if I click Save & Generate, pdf is generated with missing topics.
    When I check the event log, I see Application Error. What exactly is causing this crash? Please help.

    Which version of Word do you have installed and is it the 32 or 64 bit version?
    The latter will not play nicely and even Microsoft recommend the 32 bit version for compatability with other apps.
