10.6.5 update killed my computer, crashes at login screen

I've just installed the latest software update, which was applied without any errors or problems. When I restarted, it crashed at the login screen with the spinning wheel. Every single time it's booted this happens, although sometimes I am able to click Login, but it crashes immediately afterwards. There's no disk activity when it crashes on the wheel.
However, in Safe Mode it boots up just fine. I have nothing in Macbook HD/Library/Startup items, and no login items on any account, which shoots down my theory of it being a 3rd party issue.
Any help would be much appreciated. I've had problems with pretty much every software update from Apple...fills me with dread whenever I have to install a new one.
Thanks in advance.

All my stuff's backed up nice and safe weekly, although it's not a Time Machine backup since I'd like to access it easily from a Windows machine.
Thanks for the reminder about Console! Handy. Launchd showed that the Blackberry daemon was crashing on startup...which is annoying as I thought I'd removed all Blackberry software from this machine over a year ago. Anyway, I unloaded and properly removed BBDaemon and all works fine now. Guess it must have been some incompatibility with the update.
I also found a whole load of other Blackberry Desktop Manager crap still lurking around. This thread shows all the stuff which the installer fails to remove, might be handy for someone having a similar daemon problem:

The DASYLab development team has read your message, and advises that there is insufficient information to be able to even start diagnosing the problem. We suggest that you send a note directly to [email protected], with your full contact information, DASYLab serial number, and the following technical information:
-The Help-->Report information - this will tell us more about the computer, video and installed memory
-Installed hardware - what DAQ devices are you using (exact models!)
-The worksheet that crashes - we need to see how the timing is configured in the worksheet
-What other programs are running at the same time?
-Does the worksheet crash every time?
-Does the NI-DAQ Test Panel work correctly for both inputs and outputs?
Sorry that we cannot be more help in this forum; we do not have much experience with blue screen under Windows 2000. This is very hard to do, and is almost always related to a hardware problem - either a resource conflict, or problems with one of the installed hardware devices (DAQ, Video, Memory...).

  • ITunes updates make my computer crash every time I start it up

Can anyone help me everytime up try to upgrade my version of iTunes my computer crashes afterwards when I next start it up. THe only way I can find around this is to roll back the computer to previous settings. Any ideas?

DO you mean that the whole computer crashes - i.e. a blue screen stop?
If so you need to see the error message to work out what the problem is.
If you are getting a blue screen stop, it would help if you could post the exact error message. It should be some sort of numbers and text -
    0x(zeros/letters/numbers) (CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
    For example:
    Stop 0x05 (INVALIDPROCESS_ATTACHATTEMPT)
Also is a file name mentioned in the error message? If so give the exact file name. If there is a file mentioned, it can be very helpful for diagnosis.
if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), you can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Settings" button in the "Startup and Recovery" section
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
Usually blue screens are due to low level programs like drivers, or hardware issues.
You might also check in you event view to see if there are any helpful error messages there. This can be accessed via Administrative tools on the Control Panel.

  • Why does my computer crash to blue screen with message when Photoshop is open?

This happened 3-4 times when I was using the trial version and I wasn't sure which program from the trials that was doing it, but it started after I downloaded and used the Adobe Clound trials so I stopped using them. Eventually I went ahead and upgraded to the subcription and have been using Illustrator and Muse for a few days now and have not had a problem until today. I had Photoshop open and minimized, as well as Illustrator, and walked away from my desk. When I returned, the screen was blue with the Windows "shut down to prevent further damage" screen. I have a photo of the message. I realized that I had been using Photoshop the last few times this happened also. It never happened before I tried this software and stopped when I stopped using the trial.
I contacted support and chose to have someone call me back due to the wait. 15 minutes later, I got a call back from India and exlplained this. He got my phone number and asked me to hold while he got someone to help me. ONE HOUR AND 20 MINUTES later someone from India came on and I explained it all over again. He said he was going to check into it and 5 minutes later I was DISCONNECTED. No one called back and there is no option for Adobe, but to call back and start the process ALL OVER AGAIN. From what I see in these forums, it happens all the time and is serious problem with Adobe.I would never do business with a company with this type of horrible support and don't think I will continue my subscription with them. I am a graphic designer and do not have the time for computer crashes and support that does not care.

Thanks, Bill. Your response has been the most helpful. I have not yet tried the steps in your articles, but have a little more info that may help narrow it down. However, it has not happened for a couple weeks. I run a large CAD progam that also has never caused this issue.
The blue death screen occurs only when PS is open and when the computer goes to the screen saver. When I wake my screen this message is there:
"A problem has been detected an windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: win32k.sys
    PAGE-FAULT-IN-NONPAGED-AREA
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. I this is a new installation, ask you hardware of software manufacturer fo any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable such components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.
    Technical Information:
    *** STOP: 0x00000050 (0xE57C1304, 0x00000000, 0xBF8892C3, 0X00000001)
    ***  win32k.sys - Addre4ss BF8892C3 base at BF800000, DateStamp 4ff2f633"
    Beginning dump, blah blah blah.
After this happenend 2-3 time after installing the PS trial, it was obvious that it was the only software change I had made. I stopped using it and went back to using my PS4 and the blue screen never happened again...until I purchase my subscription and used it again. I don't know if any of this helps narrow down what I can test, but you have given me the most knowledgeable feedback. Thanks again.

  • [SOLVED] GDM / GNOME crashes on login screen after standby

Brand new Arch installation on a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 10. Most of the stuff works out of the box (except touchscreen https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1478128).
Using plain vanilla GNOME + GDM things seem ok, but once every few times upon returning from standby the login screen crashes and just freezes on the password screen. Nothing can be done (except for jumping to another vt) and a reboot is required.
If I SSH into the machine during this period, nothing suspicious shows up on journalctl.
    Any ideas what's going on?
Last edited by yuvadm (2014-12-01 11:08:40)

Since I'm also getting some random freezes even when not in the login screen, I'm now suspecting a graphics driver problem.
Now testing UXA mode, per the Intel Graphics wiki page, hoping it will solve the freezes.
EDIT: UXA mode seems to have fixed the problem.

  • Just updated to Yosemite, computer crashes everytime I unplug my WiMax from USB port

I have a MacBook Pro Retina, and updated from Mavericks OS X to Yosemite OS X.
Ever since the update, my laptop crashes everytime I unplug my WiMax portable internet from USB port.
The error message that appears says: “your computer restarted because of a problem, press any key to continue…”.
After pressing a key, the Apple logo and a loading bar appears, ~30s later, I am brought to login page.
I already tried to "repair disk permissions" in disk utilities, but the issue is not resolved.
Can you please teach me how fix my computer, so that it doesn't crash everytime I unplug my WiMax from USB port?
    Thank you very much!

I have the same problem in Yosemite. If I turn off or disconnect my G-Technology Thunderbolt drive, my MacBook Pro freezes/crashes every time. I get a dark screen and message: “Your computer restarted because of a problem…” (and then it restarts automatically).
I always eject the drive first with no issue. It’s just when I power the drive down or physically disconnect the cable that the crash occurs.
    Anyone find any solutions yet?

  • Did the last OSX update kill my computer?

After the last OSX 10.7.5 (11G63) update on my aged iMac, all Google websites, Chrome, Safari, Word, and other programs I use daily keep crashing. Is my computer too old for that update? Have I exceeded its capacity? The processor is 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo; the memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

Based on the information you have provided your iMac is a Model Identifier iMac 5.2 and the Model Number is A1195.  Check in System Profiler>Hardware if this is the case.
If so it can accept Lion OSX.  Your crashes then are occurring for other reasons.
    Try a safe boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Also log the next kernel panic report and post it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546
    Ciao.

  • 10.6.6 update killed my computer

I up instaled the update and than restarted my iMac and it got stuck on the grey screen, not even the apple logo or spinning indicator was there. I have been looking around and have found posts about this happening before but on updates to older OS X's...i do not have a clue as to what to do...

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Reboot with the Shift key depressed and see if you can get into
Safe Mode. Safe Mode runs disk repairs as it boots so you can then try rebooting into normal. If not than reboot into SM and run the 10.6.5 Combo Updater from the Apple Downloads page. All while in safe mode.
If that doesn't work you'll have to restore your computer to 10.6.4 from your backup.

  • Hello, did an Itunes Update kill my Computer?

Hello, since yesterday I'm owning a new Ipod Shuffle and I like it. For the Ipod shuffle it was necessary to update my Itunes, which I've been always denying. Now the computer runs very slow and even Skype and Mail OS don't open at all anymore. It's pretty annoying -- please help me.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Well it is possible that's why it wants to update iTunes. There may be a bug in the iTunes version you have installed that slows your machine if you connect the new iPod shuffle. Regardless, my advice:
    1. Dismount and disconnect the iPod.
    2. Determine if the slowness exists without the iPod.
    - a. If it does not exist without the iPod, perhaps your USB cable is faulty, or the iPod is faulty. Try a different cable, also try connecting it via a different USB port, and try connecting only Apple devices via USB. If none of the above works to stave off the slowness, the iPod is likely the culprit, and you should use the store return period to get a replacement iPod.
    - b. If the slowness exists without the iPod, see if you installed anything along with the iPod, if you can remove it. First see if the disk is too full*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/diskfull.html
Or if permissions or the directory are damaged*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
If neither appears to be the case, see my user tip about downgrading:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1308817&tstart=0
The same holds true for uninstalling system level software, assuming you did install something new with the iPod.
If you didn't install anything new with the iPod, it may be time, to consider upgrading to the latest iTunes, keeping my FAQ* in mind about backing up first:

  • Update 10.6.3 update made my computer crash, need help

last night i saw the update and so i started the update on my late 2008 model macbook pro. it went fine up to about 98% then a box popped up and stated an error has occurred and was not successful in installing. it then said to restart, to which i did and now during the apple logo when the circle dash thing spins, it just does that and wont get past this point. i tried even safe mode and the bar gets about halfway and then goes away and it starts spinning. i just tried a PRAM test and still nothing. any suggestions on what to do guys. i heard about sometimes you can get a firmware patch from apple and put it on cd and it can repair something. i have no clue but would like to know what to do. my 1 year warranty is also up and dont want to shell out money to apple.

I had this happen too, I updated it two nights ago and haven't used it since. I turned it on last night around seven after not using all day and the entire screen had different hues of purple. I called Apple and they weren't any help. They told me that I needed to make an appointment for the following Thursday. I told them I was a college student and it didn't seem to matter to them how much I needed my laptop. I later called Best Buy (whom I purchased it from) and they told me to do a safe boot which "fixes" some bugs (you can do this by powering on your macbook while holding the shift key) it worked for a while but then it seemed to not work on a normal boot (i.e restarting). I guess we'll see what happens during my appointment at the genius bar.

  • Computer Crashed, Now cracked Screen on Phone, How do I get my songs? Gurus

Ok, heres the deal, have a computer that Windows based I downloaded all my songs over 2000 dollars worth, well that crashed and wouldnt load 3 months ago. In the mean time, I was downloading directly off my 2G Iphone. Well my bro put another harddrive and operating system in. So on my computer I was still able to download Itunes and then Grab that folders from my old hard drive and authorize my new computer. Now I cracked my phone and Im getting a new one. How do I get the songs and apps I bought off my Iphone, so that I have them when I get my new Iphone?
Im going nuts here! THanks to anyone that can help!

With iphone attached, in itunes click File>Transfer Purchases.
This will get your itunes purchased music from iphone to your computer.
The apps should transfer automatically. If not, you should be able to download again for free. You will go through the buy screen, but there should be no charge. You can do a forum search for this as it has been asked and answered before.

  • Crash to Login Screen - typical?

In Snow Leopard, I have had apps crash, but never the whole system, so I don't know what that experience is like. My question is, what happens when the entire system crashes? I was working in a CAD app when my system reverted instantly to the login window. No gray panic screen, no crash reporter, no reboot, just a normal login window with no warnings or popups. I logged back in and my apps were no longer running and a few minutes of unsaved data was gone. There was also no post-login message telling me there had been an improper shutdown, etc. Is it typical in a whole-system crash to simply revert instantly to the login window like that? Without the computer rebooting?
Note: I can't make heads or tails of Console logs, but there is activity in the Crash Reporter/Window Server log corresponding to the time of the event (partial log pasted here):
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0xffffffff1f254e98
Crashed Thread:  0  Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread
I'm not so concerned with why it crashed (that looks like a kernel panic to me), but how it behaved when it did. I've just never seen this before (Tiger's preferred method was to throw a panic screen at me).

I had a similar problem, which I posted a thread about, with no real response.  Apple suggested reinstalling everything, which I did, and the problem went away for a while, but now it's back. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd very much like to hear them.

  • MBP 2006, Crash during login, black screen, fans running high speed.

    Hello.
I'm having problem with my MacBook Pro 2006 model. OSX 10.6.8.
When I boot into OSX and log in then the computer crashes with black screen and fan start running on high speed. It usually happends when I'm typing my password but sometimes I can log in but then it crashes usually soon.
I can boot into Safe mode and Single user mode and everything is normal there.
If I boot from OSX install CD same happens. Its crashes. Same with from Install USB stick and from Disk warrior disk. Safemode and sigleuser mode is no problem.
It started one year ago when I puted the computer to sleep and woke it up. Then it crashed. So I just stopped puting it to sleep. Then after few months it started doing this during login but after one or two restarts then it worked. And now she does it every time.
Nothing in logs that gets my attention. I've tryed resetting SMC and everything else I can reset.
    Anyone had this problem ?
    Best Regards.
    Sverrir

I've been having this same frustrating problem, with the same machine (A1150, 1.83Ghz) although mine does it with both the AC and the battery. I was hoping it was the battery and just replaced it (the old one was almost dead), to no avail.
I thought it was working okay in Windows under Bootcamp until one day it decided to show off the same black-out/wild spinning fans symptoms. Grrr.
I've since run the following repeatedly, all of which have come up with nothing: AHT, Memtest, Hardware Monitor, iStat. I've been furiously monitoring the logs and not seeing anything jump out. I also cleaned the caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner and OnyX, and did an archive & install of the OS a couple of times. Lastly, I created a new user to see if there were problems with my start-up. Problems persisted.
Right now the only time I can keep it running is if I'm in Safe Mode. Not helpful, particularly WRT making a backup (i.e., I won't be able to use Firewire ).
Any more ideas/advice on this would be very appreciated. I'm ready to hurl my puter out the window.
