10-bit workflow on w540?

This is a make-or-break question for a workstation machine: Can the w540 output 10-bit color (adobeRGB, video, photo, rendering) over its TB port?
The silence from Lenovo and Nvidia suggests NO, despite Quadro's internal capability - possibly still gated by the Optimus/Intel IGP. (BTW: Galaxy S4 recently got an award for its adobeRGB coverage... a phone)
Internally, w540's IPS panel; externally, the Quadro over DP/TB; both are natural matches for a 10b flow - unless the Intel/IGP side of the Optimus would limit Quadro's 32b color packing out of the IGP video buffer...
But then one can not claim WS-class and ISV if true 10b rendering is impossible with Optimus!
The latter sad assumption seems to be indeed the case for Intel's HD4000 'Optimus'; see tijo's post in http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-latitude-vostro-precision/733144-m4700-nvidia-quadro-intel-hd40...
Net: If the w540 can NOT drive my 10b monitors over DP/TB, this is a deal breaker. Hard to believe that Optimus w/ the latest Intel IGP still can't output 10b color in AD2013 - and reason to avoid Optimus/IGP, if true.
However, i hope i'm wrong and that the w540 supports 10b workflows.

More details on the W540 Thunderbolt port and the W540 display topology:
Now, as you can see there, the W540 has two display-modes, that can be changed in the BIOS: Standard and Advanced. In Standard-Mode, all dsplay connections are handled by the Intel HD 4600. In Advanced Mode, alll display connections on the Dock are handled by the Quadro K1100M / K2100M. Since all W540 versions have Optimus, the internal screen has to be 6-bit, since the HD 4600 sill can´t drive 10bit displays. But an external 10 bit monitor connected over the dock with an W540 in Advanced mode should work.
Not sure about the internal ports of the Notebook. We will see if it will work or not.

  • Convert 23.98 DV to uncompressed 10-bit workflow

I'm working a project from MiniDV 23.98 advanced mode and am trying to convert to 30 FPS Uncompressed for sharper titles and graghics. I'm sure there are several ways to approach this but I would like some ideas and a smooth transition workflow. Final output goal is Digibeta.
I tried using media manager to consolidate my sequence and recompress to 10-bit but it won't convert 23.98 to 30 fps. The frame rate conversion is ignored and it creates an Uncompressed 10-bit sequence of 23.98. Everything looks fine when I do this but I am afraid that the 23.98 fps will hurt me in the end when going out to digibeta. Or will I be okay in this route?
Once I convert, I'll be editing in AE and Color simultaniously. Is there a better workflow I can follow?
Another method I tried was that I copied the entire DV sequence onto a 10-bit sequence which requires rendering of the whole timeline. Also randomly there are single-frame gaps through the timeline where the clips aren't butted up.

I don't know. Does it matter If I go to Color before or after uprezing? I thought if I uprez then go to Color, I would have a little more color space to control. I read somewhere that it was ridiculous to use 8-bit in Color.
Another thing, I guess I need to read up on proRes. I know nothing about it or what's it's purpose.
I did a test with Color, I'm unable to change the frame rate. I changed codec to UC 10-bit and sent it back to FCP. The codec remained 10-bit UC but the screen size stayed at 720X480 in an 8-bit timeline. That was weird. I don't think Color conforms yet.

  • 16-Bit Workflow in Adobe Camera RAW 6.3

With the “Depth” button set to 16,  I go through the RAW editing options from top to bottom as they are laid-out on the right side of the screen.
I must convert to 8-bits at some point. It can be either before leaving the RAW editor or within the Photoshop Elements 8-bit editor.
Will I lose the higher quality16-bit editing I have just done if I change the Depth button to 8-bits while still within the RAW editor?
I then click the “Open Image” button to do any final 8-bit editing. I could also set it to 8-bits in the 8-bit editor.

The bit depth setting has no effect while you are actually in the raw converter, only on the conversion done when you send the image over to the editor.

  • Import 16 bit tiff files in premiere pro cs5 ?

When i try to import a 16 bit tiff sequence I get an error message "The video bit depth of this file is unsupported.".
I could not find how to set bit depth in project, however I understand from the help files that 16 bit workflow is supported.
    What I am doing wrong?

    Hi again Salazaroo....
    Thanx for your answer...
I am working in a project shot with RedOne and the output will be 35mm and DCP.... we´ll made the prints with Cinevator system as well... same as yours...
What I did is open the Pr project in After effects and from there export the R3d as DPX to work in the compositings... I am trying different ways to do this... change the R3D settings to RedLog and RedSpace before to export as DPX OverRange, or PDLog985 and RedSpace before to export as DPX Standard (as Mark Christiansen says in THIS SITE) ...
Once I do it, I import the DPX to start the composition... so I change the Cineon Settings to OverRange or Standard (depending of the settings at export) and apply the Cineon Converter LogToLin... but then everything looks too overbright to work... I am working with the DPX and .psd and tiffs together so it is like crazy to match everything together...
I tried to export as PDLog985, RedSpace and OverRange Cineon Settings (instead of Standard) and it looks much better... I check the picture looking at the Info panel and everything is Ok, or close the 'Iris simulator'  and detail appear in the image, ...but when I check different elements coming from matte painters and 3d artist, whites clip at 1... how can i match everything together in the same space color to work and then apply the Cineon Converter LintoLog before export???
This is the first time I work with DPX and I am reading a lot about it, but I could´t find a step by step explanation... and it is like there are many ways to deal with it... some people says to use a general Working Space, some people says don´t (See this Article) ...
Thank you man.... I really appreciate your help....

  • Save as 8 or 16-bit from RAW?

Can anyone recommend me saving my RAW files into 16-bit tiff before reproduction?
I shall soon have a number of RAW CR2 Canon-sourced files that I want to process into tiffs and ultimately convert to black and white for repro in a book with a modest 20cm image size. These files will then become CMYK by another party.
What would I gain by saving as 16-bit, making adjustments in CS3 then down-sizing to 8-bit in order to gain maximum detail, as opposed to simply processing straight to 8-bit (seeing as image size is not large)?
If there's a tutorial that best explains 16-bit workflow and concepts, I'd be grateful as it's not something I've learned before PS CS3.
    Thank you,
    Richard.

    Richard,
If you want to be safe, save your tiffs as 16 bpc tiffs from C1 and do your tonal correction and conversion to black and white as adjustment layers in Photoshop. Whether or not 16 bit makes a difference depends a lot on the image content and printing method. If you are printing fine gradated skies or similar things, I would leave everything 16 bit and hand that off to whoever is doing the conversions for you. The chances are that it won't make a difference. Just remember that even 16 bpc files can posterize too if you push them far enough, and digital camera files are much more prone than scanned film.
There is almost no reason to use psd files anymore. Tiffs do just about everything including saving larger files, and zip compressed tiffs are almost always smaller, a lot smaller on disc, than layered psd files. My feeling is that if there weren't so many legacy psd files out there, Adobe would just as soon drop support for that format.

  • ACR 4.1 defaults to 8 bit

Using Photoshop CS3 under Windows XP...
Just spotted that when I open a RAW (Canon) file with CS3 (and Camera RAW 4.1), it defaults to 8-bit workflow settings (and I have to change the bit depth via the drop down box). CS2 defaulted to 16-bit
At the bottom of the Camera Raw 4.1 screen it states (for a RAW file I just opened) : Adobe RGB (1998); 8 bit; 2592 by 3888 (10.1MP); 240 ppi
Is there anyway to get it to default to 16 bit? I know it's only one extra step, but wasn't an issue with CS2
    Thanks

    >At the bottom of the Camera Raw 4.1 screen it states (for a RAW file I just opened) : Adobe RGB (1998); 8 bit; 2592 by 3888 (10.1MP); 240 ppi
    >Is there anyway to get it to default to 16 bit? I know it's only one extra step, but wasn't an issue with CS2
The workflow settings at the bottom of the ACR screen are stick. If you choose 16 bit, the next time you use ACR it will be set to 16 bit. The same applies to the working color space

  • Why does HDV ProRes422 import as 8-bit?

Just wondering...when checking the 'internal pixel format' in Setup/User Prefs, only 8-bit is highlighted and all others are ghosted (except floating point). My original footage is HDV (8-bit native) but I digitized it as ProRes422 via a Kona LHe card. According to the Kona folks, this is supposed to allow me to process the footage in a 10-bit workflow, which would be ideal for Color. My timeline settings seem to be in order, so why isn't Color seeing this as 10-bit material, after the sequence is sent from my from my FCP timeline? Thoughts? Anecdotes? Bueller?

You're right about the LHe handling full HD to ProRes conversion. We run a Quad with an LHe and a RAID50 SCSI setup and capture 1080i/50 via HD SDI to ProRes422 HQ (230 Mbps) without problems.
Our original Quad, and a 2nd recent purchase, have the G5 ATI X1900 cards (ex OWC) to replace the single Nvidia 4500 that with Color 1.0 was limited to 8 bit, although I think it's a bit faster than the G5 ATIs - with 8-bit or FP being the only really options we need, I think I'd have the 4500 back in both given the choice. But the ATIs are workable enough.

  • Can't use CS4 to edit --Photoshop CS4 crashes after installing Aperture 3.1

Hello: Whenever I try to launch Photoshop CS4 as my external editor, it will crash while trying to open the image. I never had this problem before installing the Aperture 3.1. update. CS5 seems to be okay though.
Whenever I select an image in Aperture and select edit with Photoshop CS4, it will launch CS4 and then hang---never opening the image.
(I am using Photoshop CS4 for most of my work as many of my plug-ins have not been updated yet)

...my work as many of my plug-ins have not been updated yet...
Since I do not know what kind of plug-ins you are working with, if you tell us what are you working with the specific plug-ins. So I cannot tell you, but I do know that some other plug-ins software developers such as Nik Software and onOne Software recently updated their plug-ins from 32-bit to 64-bit plugins. However, I do not know what you are working with.
Also, when you are running Ps CS5, are you aware that you can switch back and forth between 32-bit and 64-bit workflow in Info panel. If you need to run 32-bit plugins in Ps CS5, you can always set it to 32-bit. When you are done working with that, you can set it back to 64-bit.

  • Red Box - Unsupported File Type - Large Tiff - Large Scans - 10,000 pixels

    Hello All,
I am a user of Aperture 2.1, and I have grown to love the program except for one major issue. Large files that are imported into the program are simply unsupported.
I scan 6x7 medium format negatives (8649x10712 @ 530.2 megs) and 4x5 negatives (very large drum scans) into my system (new 8 core, 12 gig ram, 512 meg vidcard, 10.5.2) and the issues begin. A thumbnail is properly built. Once the thumbnail is selected, and a preview is built, the image appears briefly and is replaced by a red box soon with the text "Unsupported File Type". If I change views to full screen all I see is a red box with the same text. Ie. I can't work the image.
The files are perfectly fine. I work them in photoshop cs3 no problem, and I can view them with quick look preview no problem.
This is highly frustrating as I work primarily in larger formats and create large prints!
It seems like the bug occurs in files that have a side larger than 10,000 pixels. This is a massive issue to large format/panoramic workflow!
I have called Apple tech support and the techs claim ignorance. That could mean they do not know of the issue which does not bode well for a solution. I'm in the dark. Please shed some light!
    Three questions:
Is anyone else experiencing these issues?
Is there a workaround that doesn't involve cutting file size?
Has there been any acknowledgment from Apple support regarding this issue?
I am most frustrated as Aperture is billed as a professional product, but it is unable to keep up with the demands of a working fine art photographer.
Awesome product but needs some adjustments!
    photofl0w

William, thanks for your input, but I feel that your position avoids the primary issue. Aperture is a Digital Asset Manager, and as such, should be able to manage digital image assets.
From Aperture's Webpage: "See how Aperture lets you import, manage, and enhance your photos in one simple, integrated workflow." It says photos, not Raw photos. In fact, I'll take it one step further, in the tutorial CD that came with 1.5, the narrator mentions the 16-bit workflow in Aperture with Tiffs, more than once.
I purchased Aperture for management and integrated workflow. Apple states: "Now it’s even easier to cull through shoots, enhance images, manage massive libraries, and deliver stunning photos." No where does it say that the functionality of the program is limited to RAW files. Ie. Apple never mentions that Large .tif files are not supported.
I have 6x7 and 4x5 Scans, Masters, Working Images, Print files and Web images that I would like to organize, stack, label, rate, view versions simultaneously on my second screen, sort, arrange, and keyword. The program's basic functionality is thwarted by an issue that Apple has not owned up to.
If Apple had mentioned in its literature that large .tif's weren't supported I would not be posting this, as I would not have purchased the software. But nowhere, not in phone conversations with Apple Techs (3), not on their own Forums where other end users have hit a massive workflow brick wall, and not even after I mentioned to a One on One guru, has Apple said, oh, yeah, we are aware of it and working on it. There is no transparency here.
Now, I have purchased Aperture, learned it, and imported thousands of files into it. I like the program as I have seen it function with smaller files perfectly, but this large file issue needs to be overcome.
Regarding editing images, yes I use photoshop for the majority of my post-production. I then use a finely tuned Colorburst Rip on a nice Epson for my Fine Prints. Those are the functions of the respective programs. Aperture is a DAM, a program that among other things allows the end use to manage their files effectively and maintain a strong workflow.
Regarding space - esata is a beautiful thing.

  • Which version of windows best for PS CS4/5 Camera RAW

We are adding a new windows workstation that will primarily be used for processing Canon RAW files using CS4 or CS5 Camera RAW followed by a PS action. We can pick the version of CS and have OS options as well. We will be processing thousands of files per day and want the best performance. I would like to go with a 64 bit workflow and am leaning toward Win7 64 bit with CS5. My IT dept has said that there are "known" issues with Win 7 and Camera RAW and offer 64 bit XP as an option. This is not my area of expertise. We mostly use Macs for this work but use PCs for one workgroup.
Is there a known issue with Win7 and Camera RAW and or Photoshop CS5 or CS4?
What is the optimum Win OS and version of PS and Camera RAW for maximum performance and hopefully stability?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    --David

Windows 7 x64 is excellent for Photoshop and Camera Raw operations.  IT people are notoriously overconservative and tend to recommend XP.  That said, Windows 7 does take some tweaking and possibly some freeware add-ons to make it a really productive environment.
I'd suggest 8 to 16 GB of RAM and at least 4 processor cores.
Perhaps one of the more important aspects of operation is choice of the video card, and the stability of the video drivers.  The current versions of Photoshop use OpenGL heavily, and only very recently have video drivers begun to be stable with OpenGL operation.
Adobe lists the cards they've tested with.
My own experience is with ATI (specifically a Visiontek Radeon HD 4670), and while it's plenty fast and I've had reasonably good results with the latest drivers, it's now a bit dated and you should look to others to offer their experiences with other brands/models as well.
    -Noel
P.S., The 64 bit build of Camera Raw is quite a bit faster than the 32 bit build, insofar as it uses multiple cores to do the work, while the 32 bit build is limited to running on one core for some reason.

  • Is it possible and how to create bright preview mode for a custom Proof Setup

You know how there is Proof Setup preview modes under the View menu. Can I create a custom preview mode so that when I choose it and press Ctrl + y it shows the image very bright without changing it.
I need this because I want to see and edit more details in the dark areas which I may not be seeing on my monitor or room lighting conditions and thus to create images with more rich and dynamic shading in the darks so when viewed on brighter monitors or when levels are eventually changed the darks reveal nice shading instead of flat black.
I'm looking for per image solution that doesn't affect other images or applications like using global gamma.
    I'll greatly appreciate your help

That's what I use Adjustment layers but they are a big pain because the color picker can't disregard them. So every time I want ot use the color picker I have to hide the adjustment layer and then when I paint I have to enable it again. I want a color picker that picks from all but not the adjustment layer. This makes this workflow impossible. I need this for painting artworks from scratch.
There are no two equal monitors out there and some are quite off, so I want to create artworks that look as good as possible on all kinds of monitor including miscalabrated ones. These are samples to sell artwork. Not only that but the artwork often is edited from other designers not by brush repainting but using global adjustments like levels. And I don't want to use 32 bit workflows. What I'm asking will serve the purpose perfectly.
I feel that since PS pulls the preview information from profiles that probably reside in files somewhere, I can modify a copy of a profile and I was hoping if someone here knows more details about this and helps.
    Thanks anyway

  • Empty "scheduled jobs" list in control center

    Hi all,
due to a move to a new data warehouse environment i added a new configuration
to my OWB project with new locations, control center etc.
I was able to deploy and run all of the owb stuff into the new environment except all
the scheduled jobs to deploy into OEM,
which owb generates for all the process flows that have a schedule assigned ("Referred Calendar" in Configuration).
The list of "Scheduled Jobs" in control center for the target location just appears empty.
Are there any additional settings or privileges missings,
i.e. for target location, owb repository owner, configuration, location, ...?
Old env is Oracle DB 10.2.0.2 on Win Server 2003 32 bit, Workflow Server 2.6.4, OWB Client 10.2.0.1.31, OWB-Repository 10.2.0.1.0.
New env is Oracle DB 10.2.0.2 on Redhat 64 bit, Workflow Server 2.6.4, OWB Client 10.2.0.1.31, OWB-Repository 10.2.0.1.0.
    Any hints would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Matthias

    Hi,
I found out that I have to create a new schedule module.
In the create module wizard you'll have to define a location where schedules
are deployed to and there I defined the new target location.
It is not possible to assign different deployment locations for same schedule
    module in each configuration.
I don't know if it is a bug or a feature, but with the new seperate schedule module
    it works.
    Just to let you know,
    Matthias

  • Custom Classpath when launching Workflow Designer (and other Java bits)

Hello - I thought this tid-bit might come in handy (if it's not already mentioned anywhere else)
If you want to add additional classpath entries to Workflow Designer you can do so in the following way:
    1) find the adobe_workflow_designer.exe that the installer created
    2) Create a file with a .cp extention in the same folder. MyJars.cp is an example
    3) put one line in this file for each jar file to load. Example:
The Designer executable is generated from InstallShield - there are other ways to change the java startup parameters (like memory options, garabage collection, etc.) documented here: http://helpnet.installshield.com/robo/projects/isxuniversalhelplibrary/topics/native_laun cher_modifying.htm#CP
