10GB Video to fit on a 4.7GB DVD

I've recorded a wedding onto mini DV and when I exported the 48min video to quicktime from FCP, the video is 10gb! Will this fit onto a DVD? I wouldn't think so since the DVD says 4.7GB.
I know there's way to compress files and retain quality, but I don't understand it well at all!
Question.
1. Is there a way to compress this video from the timeline in FCP to under 4.7GB with good quality? I'm not familiar with compression formats and directions so could you please assist with simple words

+I do have both. But I have little experience with compressor and none with DVD Studio Pro. However, whatever you have to say would greatly assist!+
Ok,
I'll mention simple steps and I'll try to make them as much clear as I can.
Why Compressor ?
Compressor will create an Mpeg2 of your edited video and an ac3 (dolby stereo) for the audio (You can't create ac3audio with DVDstudio).
(Use google for any farther information about any word or definition that remains slightly unclear to you).
After that is done burning your DVD with DVDStudio will be quicker and easier.
Step 1
Once you are done with the edit you can:
either export it straight from the timeline to Compressor (File>Export>Using Compressor)
or create a QT movie (check self-contained in the export window) and import into Compressor after you open it.
If you export it straight from the timeline Compressor will open automatically,
if you wish to use the self-contained QT movie you can still export it from an open FCP project or open Compressor independently. If the the latter is your case once you open Compressor click on *Add File* in the toolbar (top left corner ).
In both cases your video will appear in an untitled project right below the toolbar. You can see the movie (or FCP) icon and the title of your project.
Now, the simplest way to proceed is as follow:
you see the text next to the icon of your movie (in the blue rectangle) saying "drag here settings and destinations"? Now go to the settings window below, you can see the settings and destinations tabs. Go to Settings*>*Apple 4 groups>DVD 10 groups>*DVD best quality 90 minutes* two settings. This is the most common setting to use.
In a nutshell drag the DVD best quality 90 minutes folder over the "drag settings and destinations here" text. Choose your destination. If you click each setting the inspector window activates. Now before we go ahead I suggest you to read the manual and understand the importance of the inspector window and its functions. In particular read about Avarege bit rate, maximum bit rate and in general Variable frame rate (VBR) and constant frame rate. With regard to audio read about ac3.
This time we leave default settings and proceed by clicking the Submit button.
In the preview window, right below the player commands you can see a little arrow and a date, click on the arrow and you can see that Compressor is encoding your video.
Step 2
When the encoding process is over open DVDstudio.
See the first button of the toolbar , top left? Click on Import Asset, find your encoded audio and video files and open them.
Now since your movie has been already compressed video(Mpeg2) and audio (ac3) they will show in the assets tab below the graphical tab followed by two green lights.
From now follow Shane Ross's steps from point 3 if you don't want a menu.
If you want the menu there's a simple video tutorial that came with FCP 2. Take a look at that.
Hope this helps,
G.
PS. BTW yes, 10 GB DV once compressed will easily fit in a DVD

  • Why won't 110 min video not fit DVD when using Compressor Best 120 min

I have a standard DV video lasting 110 minutes. I have exported it as a DV clip and imported that clip as an asset in DVD Studio Pro 4. Build fails with a not enough room on the output media message. I have also exported from FCP using Compressor set to the Best 120 minute setting with the same result. Shouldn't 110 minutes fit on a standard DVD using either of these methods?
What's up? What can I do to get this material on a standard DVD?

If you are using a 4.7gb DVD and the video is 110min then use the 120min preset then click on the icon that shows you the "estimate size". In my opinion it is very accurate, but it doesn't include the audio in that calculation. So just bring down the Mbps (the top slider) down about .5 of a bit rate and then your audio should fit just fine and you can use the 120 min setting.
You do this, you click your "video" or MPEG icon in the "untitled" tab. Now look in the "Inspector" to the right. See the "estimated size"? Now click on the "encoder" icon (second to the left), Click "Quality" tab, and adjust the "Mbps" down about .5ish.

  • How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

what good video cards fit G5 Dual cpu
can i have a link to a UK website selling what your suggesting or just  give me the name and i can look it up

Thanks for this post/response. The 7800GT card I currently have was a build to order option and I assume was not flashed. I'd love to figure out if there is a
way to get my current card to like the MXO box, or to install a new, equally fast video card that would allow me to use MXO. I may install an x1900 Mac Edition and see how it works but do want to hear from other late edition G5 owners that they have been happy with this card (running OS 10.4.11, Final Cut Pro).

  • Cannot get video to fit in the binding box

    Hiya!
I'm still pretty knew to Premier Pro and all it's things. I've been fiddling with it off and on for the past few years and it worked perfectly in all that time. But NOW, of all times, I can't seem to get it to do what I want.
I'm trying to get my video to fit in the black binding box where you watch the video (sorry, I don't know the name for it...). When I first import it and drag it to my workstation it's really blown up and when I try to resize it I get black margins around the video.
I made it happen by accident...once. And because it was an accident I have NO idea how to duplicate it. If someone can help me out that would be awesome!~
I've added a picture so you can see what I'm talking about (my accident compared to what I normally get).
This is my accident, and what I'm trying to get to.
This is what happens when I import a video and drag it into the workspace.
And this is what I get when I attempt to resize the video to fit. See the black bands at the top and bottom of the video?

What John said - however, be sure to make a new sequence from a VIDEO clip being used in the production, and not from a graphic/still image which may of radically different size and proportions! If your still image does not fit the Program window, right-click the clip and choose "Scale to Frame" and that will make it fit. However, if the proportions are not the same, you can still expect black bars. In that case, use the Motion effect and adjust scaling as needed to make it fit the window if need be.

  • DVD video gets cut off, but preview shows dvd as good

Having a problem getting my video to output from dvd burning without getting cut off.
Computer is Win xp pro, 3gb ram, 2.33ghz cpu, 40gb free hd space
    Using Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.2.
I have video which I've recorded from my Sanyo xacti 720p avc camera, which records in mpeg4 format. I've converted the video(s) to mpeg 1,2 for dvd using my "Need4 Video Converter 5.9". At first I tried putting several mpeg1's into my premeire project, then I also merged all the video files into one, but still had the same problem.
I put the video(s) into my premiere project, added some titles on the other video track. Also added some music on another audio track. So, the total size of the videos is about 3.5gb. I preview my project it looks great, I added some dvd scenes and used a nice template with scene selection and captions..the works. Now I try to burn it several ways, to a dvd, to a file folder on high or low settings, but everytime I only end up with about 1.5gb of data, and 25 mins of video, so it is cut off. My original video is an hour and 50 mins.
The encoding takes about 3 hrs after I hit burn. No errors or anything.
So, I cannot understand what I need to do. I don't want to convert to a smaller or lower format, bcz I dont' want to lose quality. I'm at a loss bcz I've tried so many different formats and combinations, let this stuff run for so many hours this past weekend, and still can't get it to work. Is there some kind of setting I'm missing? Something in premiere?
I've read some best practices on the forum, and I understand to use bit rate of 7mbs or less, and to burn on slow speed. Is it at all bcz I'm burning it to my hard drive? but i don't think this is my issue. is it the old software? it came with my Sanyo camera, so I would think its good enough.
Please help if you can. I was thinking my next shot might be to convert it down to a much smaller size, and maybe it will fit(but quality may be an issue). Thanks in advance. -Ron

    Ron,
Yes, PE is a scaled down version of P-Pro, but also has some additional features, plus an easier way of doing many things, that its "big brother" does not. As to the ability to Export/Share frame sizes, I think that most are included in PE (would have to open each and explore precisely to tell you if it's all there). I do not think that this is your issue.
As to the conversion, I'd step back to your original footage, Sanyo MP4, right? Unless Sanyo is using a proprietary CODEC to create the MP4's, you *should* be able to Open these files in QuickTime and play them. If you have QuickTime Pro (costs about US$30 to upgrade to "Pro), you *should* be able to Export and choose DV-AVI as your Export setting. Note: the term ".AVI" can mean so very many things. What you want is DV-AVI. This is the "native" format for PE - what it converts all other file formats to, to edit. The quality loss going with this format can be measured in a lab, but is almost totally impossible to see on any TV with the human eye. Doing this will likely enhance your entire editing experience.
As for quality and conversions and compression, your camera has already done one conversion, when it wrote to MP4. You cannot get around that. Conversion to DV-AVI will be "virtually" lossless, though the file size WILL increase. The reason is that with MP4, not all "frames" exist with full content - part of its compression. With DV-AVI each "frame" will exist with full content. Be prepared for LARGE files, but files with all of the info.
Then, when you Burn to DVD, you WILL recompress your data to MPEG-2 format, the DVD standard. You will loose some quality there, but it cannot be avoided. It is how DVD's hold their Audio & Video data.
I still do not have any ideas that would directly affect your movie not burning completely. If the Duration of your movie has exceeded the capacity of a DVD-5, you would/should get an error message to that effect. You do not.
One thing to go back and look for in your original Project's Timeline would be "gaps" in the Video. These can cause problems (or sometimes not). I zoom my Timeline way up, and use the PageUp & PageDn keys to "step" through the various Clips. The CTI (Current Time Indicator - that little doobie that marks where you are on the Timeline) should move in a linear fashion from Clip to Clip. If you see it pause, or hiccup, then zoom WAY in to the max and study the Timeline there. Are all Clips butted up to each other? Now, you can have Clips on Video Tracks above #1, that would allow you to have "gaps" in the Video on VT 1. That is OK, but if you have any spots on the Timeline, where there is NO Video, you'll likely want to fix these. You can close up the gaps by moving the Clips, so that they do butt up, or if you want "black" there, just go to the New icon and choose Black Video. Size it to fit the gap, and you will be fine. You can also extend the Clip before the gap, or after the gap, if that does not mess up your editing. Several choices and each should be based on what you want to have happen. If you find a bunch of gaps (even one can be deadly) try to Export/Burn again. Note: I've seen one 1-frame gap cause problems, but just had to re-edit a Project where I fixed 900+ gaps, and that Project had already Burned 4 DVD's. Go figure.
Last thing to look at would be to hit the "\" key in Timeline mode. This will zoom out to show the full Timeline. Do you have anything stuck out by itself, past where you thought the end was? This should yield other problems, but not the one you are experiencing. Still, who knows? It's also a good thing to do, when you believe you are done, just to check that something didn't get "orphaned" out beyond where one normally looks on the Timeline.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] 01:50 is longish for a DVD-5. You will not be able to set a very high bit-rate (Quality slider), but you should still get the full Timeline, or an error message.

  • Getting my project to fit in a 4.7 DVD

My project is 5.0 GB. Too big for a 4.7 GB. I spent 14 hrs Compressing my 1.5 hr movie and I don't want to do it again if I can help it. Also, I'd rather use a standard DVD than a Dual Layer. Can DVDSP4 do anything to compress it further just as long as it fits inside a 4.7 disk?

with your machine it shouldn't take that long.... I just compressed a side job on my powerbookG4 1.67 that was 94 minutes long it only took 7 hours... using compressor use best quality 90 min. change your bit rate from 6.2 to  6.0 or 5.8 ;   that should be more then plenty to compress your video to fit 4.7. I would recomend you keep the bit rate the same for all the sequences you send.
Here is a few things to consider when authoring to save space if your encodes are too big.
    1. if you can... Always use best quality 90 min.
    2. 6.2 is the default bit rate, you can take it down to 4.5 before the quality really takes a dump... (depends what you video is) do not go higher then 6.2 though.. some DVD players don't accept higher bit rates.
    3. Transitions in your menu... they take up space... but when you need to save space... use a transition from your main menu to your play all only... no reason to take up space if its needed between menus.
    4. Menu time length! you will notice when you have your menus selected that in the bottom right corner you have in your "general" tab a....  "start, loop point, and end"  with timecode under it. take your menus from 30:00 to 20:00 or 15:00.   this makes a pretty big difference if you have a lot of menus and need the space and don't have a song that is a specific time.
i have gone from 5.2GB to 4.7 by changing all of those things so i didnt have to re-encode....
which brings me to my next point... when using compressor...
try to make all of your "video sequences" equal 3.8GB MAX your Audio will take up the rest.  you can check the estimated size after changing your bit rate in compressor.  the inspector will tell you anything you need to know.
I have compressed 3 hours to one DVD using a 3.0 bit rate. because there wasnt a lot of movement it looked fine. but those are my recommendations.

  • 2 hour project on 120min/4.7gb DVD

I have a two hour long project on FCP that I need to burn on one dvd that is 120min/4.7gb. I need to use compressor in order to achieve this. Can someone direct me to the process? Thank You

In FCP, go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie. You can choose to make the movie self-contained, or just a reference movie, but do NOT check the option to "Recompress All Frames." Include DVD Studio Pro markers if needed.
Add the resulting file in Compressor. From the list of presets, choose the DVD preset appropriate for your program's duration. Each preset folder will contain a preset for AC3 audio and MPEG-2 video. If needed, you can duplicate a preset then modify it to suit your needs. Once you've chosen the DVD preset and a destination, submit the job. When it is finished, you'll have two files; .ac3 audio and .m2v video.
Import the two files into DVD Studio Pro for authoring and burning.

Educational DVD added successfully to computer iTunes but does not show up in iPad iTunes or iPad video.  How do I make the DVD contents available on the iPad?

Thanks!  For whatever bizarre reason for which I have no answer - I sync'd my iPad to my MBP the old fashion way (not iCloud) and the movie showed up just fine.  It is Nikon camera 'how to' video. I like to watch them for a better indepth discovery of what the camera can do.  The only weird thing about the hard wire sync is that it was placed in a catagory "home movies" which was never there before...actually it showed up in two places "home movies" and TV shows.
    So, thanks anyway!  Pretty cat!

Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import into IMovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

There are numerous converters online to convert the .VRO files into .VOB or MP4 or other which should be supported by Premiere Elements.

That's because a "4.7" GB DVD is 4.7 GB in decimal notation, but is actually 4.38GB in binary, which is the way computers see data.
You get this by dividing the decimal GB by 1.0737.
So you can see that your 4.4 GB is a tad too large for the DVD.
Looking at it the other way, your 4.4GB of data is 4.72 GB the way DVDs are measured.
