2 Ethernet Cards - DNS Questions

When running DNS with multiple cards do you need to state in DNS what that other IP address is used for? We use it for the Light on management. Issue is you can still connect to the other network card to configure WM and such. Shouldnt WM and SA only respond to the port in which the services are running on? Would a changeip command fix that issue? .100 is what the AFP and other services run on and lets say .101 is what LOM is running off of. BTW this is a new intel xserve.

>Is this what most people are doing with the xserves since they are coming with 2 ethernet nics?
I don't know about most, but some people are, for sure.
In general there are a few common uses for dual NICs on the server. In no particular order they include:
Port trunking
binding multiple ports together for capacity and/or redundancy (if one link dies, the other keeps ticking, at least hopefully).
Separation of services
Run some services on one NIC (e.g. web server) and other services on the other NIC (e.g. AFP). That way your 200GB photoshop uploads have minimal impact on the web traffic (note that this only works in specific configurations due to the issue of multiple IP addresses in the same subnet).
public/private network
Use one NIC as a public-facing interface, the other as a private, local network - allows things like NAT to share the public link with internal clients, or a VPN to provide secure connections from outside the physical network. Can also be combined with the above to run 'internal' services on the private link, hidden from the public.
I'm sure there are other uses, but those are the commonest ones that I'm aware of.

  • Ethernet card issue...can't get rid of self-assigned IP

    Hi folks,
I am using an circa 2005 iMac G5 PPC desktop with 10.5.8. I am trying to connect the iMac to my Time Capsule via ethernet cable, but seem to be having problems with my ethernet card. When I plug into the TC ethernet port, the TC drive, does not mount and I cannot access the worldwide web.
When I go to System Preferences --> Networking, the tab on the left for ethernet connection shows a green dot, says "self-assigned IP" and the status says "connected" PRIOR TO CONNECTING THE ETHERNET CABLE TO THE TIME CAPSULE. It shows a "self-assigned" IP (DHCP selected) of 169.254.69.249, even though I know my TC is 10.0.1.1.  Turning the ethernet off then back on, renewing the DHCP lease, nothing seems to be able to make this 169 IP address go away. The wireless connection to the TC is just fine... everything does what it should, I just can't get the ethernet cable connection to work.
Out of curriosity, I went to the System Profiler, and on the network tab it shows ethernet IPv4 169.254.69.249 (name en0).
I know it's not the Time Capsule, as I connected my laptop to it just fine via ethernet. The TC was IP 10.0.1.1 and it assigned 10.0.1.5 to my laptop (I have a variety of devices on my network), and I was able to transfer data and access the internet with no issues whatsoever.
I live in an 32 story apartment with a built-in ethernet network and ISP included in my rent. It's pretty nice, high speed. I connect from the wall to the Time Capsule via ethernet (circle dot connection port, so I know I have the right port), and then wirelessly out to a couple of laptops, a couple of Airport Express, and of course my desktop.
Bottom line, I think the ethernet card on iMac G5 desktop has gone bad: A few questions:
    (1) Any ideas what may be wrong? Has anyone seen this self-assigned IP thing that won't go away?
    (2) Any ideas how to fix it?
    (3) How much will it cost? It may be time to replace my 6-year old desk top computer.
    Thanks, Andy

I've swapped out several cables still with no luck, and the current cable definitely has 8 pins and worked with my laptop, so I'm confident it's not the cable. Also, the Time Capsule seems to be OK, because it too worked with my laptop using the same port. The only variable that doesn't seem to be cooperating is my desktop computer.
Also, I have tried to manually assign an IP consistent with the network & appropriate subnet mask. It seems to take the IP address manually, but still I can't get internet access, and can't ping the Time Capsule in network utility either.
Finally, when I connect the desktop directly to my wall outlet, taking the router out of the equation entirely, network diagnostics shows ethernet failure...
Does that sound like a bad ethernet card?
What does it take to replace an ethernet card in an iMac G5?
    Cheers, Thanks, Andy

  • Configure Network (Ethernet Cards) interfaces doubts.

    Hi All,
I m beginner in Solaris/Unix, and I have same problems in configure my network.
I have one machine with 2 Ethernet Cards, this machine has multiboot, than it have Solaris 10 and Windows XP.
I will show the configuration that I have on Window,I need the same configuration in Solaris:
    In eth0:
IP: 192.168.0.117 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is IP, OK?)
Mask: 255.255.255.0 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is
    netmaks , OK?)
Gatway: 192.168.0.254 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig broadcast, OK?)
Primary DNS: 192.168.0.254 (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
Secondary DNS: void (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
I Have an DHCP Server in 192.168.0.254, than I can use dhcp.
The problems, When I try use DHCP:
    Ifconfg eth0 DHCP
This command delay and return an Error.
    If Itry configure manually, like
    Ifconfg eth0 192.168.0.117 (this OK)
Ifconfg eth0 netmask 255.255.255.0 (this OK)
Ifconfg eth0 broadcast 192.168.0.254 (here the 254 is changed to 255 that is broadcast default, but in my net broad cast or router is in 254)
Other thing how I save this configuration. When I restart I lost all changes
Well in second interface the problem is same, but I didnt have DHCP:
IP: 200.44.136.145 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is IP, OK?)
Mask: 255.255.255.192 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig is netmaks , OK?)
Gatway: 200.44.136.129 (In Solaris the name of this is in ifconfig broadcast, OK?)
Primary DNS: 4.2.2.2 (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
Secondary DNS: void (In Solaris I dont know how configure this)
    fconfg eth1 200.44.136.145 (here .44 is changed to 36)
    Any one can help-me please?
    Thanks

yes. you got it .... eg..
    /etc/hostname.le0
    /etc/hostname.le1
in here put the hostname ... so at the shell prompt:
    # hostname <cr>
    should give your hostname.
now, in the hosts file: eg:
    # Internet host table
    127.0.0.1     localhost
    <your ip address> <your hostname>     loghost
    129.156.89.252 host2
you need to reboot after this.
if you get a 'bad address' error on boot,
you probably have a mismatch of hostnames/ip addresses somewhere in their respective files.
    also, see:
    # man hosts
    # man ifconfig

  • Ethernet Card Stopped Working (BCM5785M)

My ethernet card stopped functioning about a week ago, at the time I thought my cable had died and did not think to much of it. Then I checked the cable in my desktop computer and it worked fine and was able to connect to my router as well as the interent. To the best of my recolection I did not install any new software that may have cuased the problem, just standard pacman package updates. I ran throught the Networking wiki to try and see if I could find anything wrong but was not able to solve the problem. The odd thing is when I try and connect to my router I obtain and IP address of 192.168.1.128 which to my recolection was a fall back address when an error occurs. I normally will run my laptop on my ethernet card just becuase of shotty wireless router suppled by my ISP. I am able to use my wireless card without problems, other then the substandard performace of the wireless router, so my networking appears to be generally functioning on the computer.

The firmware out of date looked odd to me but seems to be a common thing with the driver at least when I searched the net. I found that message appear several times but without anything posted about my specific problem.

Well thanks for the compliment. this is my first post here but not my first go with linux. I started using linux back when Red Hat was still avalaible under the GNU as a free distro. Then to Fedora in beta, Gentoo. Ubuntu, and now Arch. I have been running arch for about two years and just have not needed to post do to generally finding my answers in the wiki or on a forum post either here or else linuxquestions as well. I guess that leads me to say that this distro is one of the most well documented ones I have ever used. Gentoo would be the only other who comes close but that is needed just with the complexity involved in the install.

I will say though that everything looks perfectly in order.  The DHCPCD is good, and it shows that you are connected.  I assume you recognize an error as a browser does not connect.  But have your tried other web-tools to see if they can connect?  A good starting point would be ping.  Try each of the following:
    ping -c 3 google.com
    ping -c 3 8.8.8.8

I did try a ping on the google site both with the name server as well as the ip while going through the network wiki. I also tried a ping to the router it self without success.

I guess one thing I did forget to mention is that the LEDs on the ethernet card seem to be functioning as well when I plug the cable in.
    EDIT:
    Interesting Update.
I was able to connect to my router as well as the internet by switching over to a static IP. I made sure to set it as high as possible but it did work. I was browsing around and saw another post on the forums and someone suggested to switch to static IP to help troubleshoot the problem.
Here was the post I found:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143183

  • Ethernet card disappears after SP3 install (T60 1951-45G)

    Hi!
I updated my Windows XP to Service Pack 3 yesterday and now it seems my ethernet card has disappeared. i.e. it acts at it has been disabled in the BIOS (not showing up in device manager etc.). I've tried entering BIOS, hiding it, booting, restart, enable in BIOS and new boot but no luck. In another thread I saw people complaining about broken MS update and that a clean install might resolve the problem.
My question is if anyone else have had the same experience and if it is solvable without a clean install of a streamlined SP3.
    My machine is a T60 1951-45G.
Everything else seems to run just fine by the way, but I'll post back if I find additional problems.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There are reports of SP3 breaking LAN/WAN connectivity on many laptops (TechNet, MSFN, MS forums). Not quite certain what the resolution is at this point, and not quite certain whether a streamlined SP3 fresh install would be a fix for the issue. For some, SP3 disables WAN completely, while for others the issue is with LAN. It seems certain "newer" drivers are the culprit.
Before doing something drastic, try re-installing the LAN drivers from Lenovo to see if that fixes it, otherwise you may just have to revert back to SP2 (nothing wrong with it on an existing machine that otherwise runs without issues). SP3, afterall, is particularly a cumulative update (albeit with some new "features"), so really there's no great reason to update a working and updated XP-SP2 system with this new service pack.
On a side note, be sure to check if KB941644 was inadvertently installed as part of the update - it's a "hotfix" that is known to cause a number of connectivity issues (unresolvable).
You can check here (MS XP issues) to see if there is a solution to your issue.
    Hope this clears things up

  • Performa 6360 extrange behavior and Ethernet card

I replaced in a performa 6360 the original Quantum 1.2 G with the original Maxtor 6g that came with the B&W G3 and upgraded RAM with a 63Mb replacing one of the 16Mb module. I have now a 104Mb built-in memory.
I've installed Mac OS 9.1 (int. English). Good.
So, sometimes the computer don't restart, the monitor goes, but the computer seems to be sleeping. In APS the Farallon ethernet card appears (Card name pci1011,14) but no led activity, no network. In tcp/ip no ethernet option.
I've tried to reset the pram (holding down optioncommand+PR) but the computer shuts down.
Any help or comments or questions will be aprecciated.
    Thank you

That card (and most non-Apple cards) require drivers. Farallon drivers are currently on this page, which may require you to log in to download:

You will also need the card's part number.

  • Ethernet card - work in install, not after

    Hello guys,
I'm trying to set up a server on a Compaq Deskpro EN Series SSF (PII 400). I've install ArchLinux the FTP way and it have worked well. But afer the second reboot, total network blackout. I tried to load the module of my ethernet card by rc.conf, no changes. I think it may be a matter of module option. But I don't know what option might be good.
If there is a way to see how the install script of ArchLinux configures the ethernet card (by the automatic way) this problem might be solved quickly.
The key question here is : Why does it work during the installation, but not after the second reboot.
P.S. : I had the same problem with Mandrake with the same computer.

Nobody ever reads the "about" page, eh?
ArchLinux does nothing automatically - it hides details... it's also for the experienced linux user.
    You need to know
    a) the correct module for your network card
    b) how to configure a network
after that, a quick glance at /etc/rc.conf should make it apparent how to do it.
    again: arch does nothing automatically

  • Ethernet card not found?

    Hello all
I'm new to Solaris. I have Solaris 8 for the intel platform and installed it successfully on an amd processor but it does not go out to my network. I can not ping my router or access the internet with the box. How can I tell if Solaris picked up my ethernet card <linksys 10/100 PCI> during installation and if it did not what possible steps would I have to talk in order to connect this box to my router and the network. Anyone can help?
    Thanks all,

If Solaris detected the card at install, when it was defining your system, it would've asked for an IP address, whether you wanted to run DNS etc., and whether you were on a subnet, prompting for the subnet mask if you replied 'yes.'
Network cards seem to be the great jumping-off point for Solaris on the PC platform. I am trying desperately to find a NIC that 2.5.1 likes.
    Good luck.

  • PCMCIA Ethernet card for OS X 10.4.8 ?

My ethernet port on my Powerbook G4 is damaged and can no longer be used. I looked into getting it repaired but that apparently requires replacing the entire system board at considerable cost. Rather than take that route, I was hoping to find a PCMCIA card with an Ethernet port but I cannot seem to find any that will work with OS X 10.4.x.
Does anyone know of such a card ?
    Thanks for your help !

    So, these guys have nothing?

But if you look towards the top of the page at this link under
System Requirements, you will see the following :
Supports Mac OS 7.5.3 and above (Excluding OSX support) G3 PowerBooks and above are not supported.
So, for my needs, yes, they have nothing.

  • Ethernet Card Problem

    Hello,
I have a problem. I don't see my network adapter settings. Ethernet cable is working, I test it another PC. But this pc is not see adapter settings. That ethernet card will be lost I think. I just ask; It's operating system's problem or it's hardware problem, I do not know. How I test it?

  • I need a PCI ethernet card driver for my Performa 6360...

Roughly a week ago, I decided to add yet another one of my classic Macs to my LAN, a classic gaming LAN of sorts, with that mac being a Performa 6360. With it's single empty (at the time) PCI slot, the solution for an ethernet card for the system was basically screaming at me. Unfortunately, I went to my local electronics store with the assumption that PCI ethernet cards are fairly generic devices that should work in nearly everything without a problem. That turned out not to be the case. Once I finally aquired the time to install it, the card itself appeared to work, with the outer LEDs indicating network activity and a 100mbps network speed, however, when I went into the Appletalk or TCP/IP control panels, I came to the terrible realization that I needed a driver. The included CD was, much to my dismay, Windows only, Google searches haven't been much help, and worst of all, I seem to have misplaced my reciept. The "card" I keep mentioning is a Linksys LNE100TX version 5.1. Here is what is shown in the apple system profiler:
    ==============================
    PCI Slot
    Card type: ethernet
    Card name: pci1317,574
    Card model: -1
    Card Rom #: Not available
    Card Revision: 17
    Card Vendor ID: 1317
    ==============================
What I am wondering is where I could find a driver for this card, and if that answer is "nowhere", is there any way I could get this card functioning under Mac OS 8.1? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well the good news is there was one,

finding one, is a good question. Oddly enough the link you posted to the 10T version is the same company as above.
Yes, I have tried searching a number of places for it, and haven't come up with much. Here is what a google shopping search pulled up (eBay came up empty), the first being "unavailable" for purchase once you add it to your shopping cart and the second costing only $150! I could easily buy a new (used) mac with the card installed in it for that much!
As for the PCI slot cards you are trying, keep in mind that you are trying to use current cards which didn't exist back in the day your Mac and OS were made...... I have Asante 10/100 PCI cards in some of that generation mac and they work fine but then they were supported by the OS.
Good point. Even back when I purchased it, the card seemed a bit of a long-shot to me, too. However, being on sale for $15, I thought, "why not at least try?". Unfortunately, I came up with the results above. However, you have given me a good idea. I realize from reading a few posts around here on the issue that it is a good idea to keep the pci slot of the computer open on this computer until there is a need to upgrade, let's say, for a graphics card. However, what if I have no future plans to add anything (as is currently)? Is it really that necessary that I keep the slot open? I'm sure it would be exponentially easier to find a card for that.
A long shot might be to try loading OS 9.0.4 and see if you get lucky as 8 is pretty old plus there's a part of me that wonders with such a slow bus and cpu that 100T is going to make a big difference.
    Kevin
Thank you for the suggestion, but that's how I collected the information for the card in the first place. The Performa 6360 didn't seem to take the card, so I popped it in to my Beige G3 running Mac OS 9.2.2 and hoped it might work on that. Same problem, however, the Apple System Profiler is much more thorough on that OS, so I was able to acquire the card's information. The reason for the 100-BaseT Ethernet, again, is not solely based on that one computer; It's the fact that I would prefer the network to run at the faster speed and with four macs currently on it, with a few more modern ones such as the iBook G3 shown below, the speed is a nice thing to have.
So, on that note, any suggestions for a PCI equivalent? Has Apple ever made any? If so, where could I find them at a reasonable (Read: Not $150) price?
    Thanks again.

  • Mac Gigabit Ethernet Cards Network Performance

I now have a 1.8ghz CoreDuo MacMini and 2.0ghz MacBook and both have gigabit Ethernet cards in them, based on the Marvell Yukon chipset i believe.
I was wondering upto what speeds people have driven these ethernet cards?
I'm doing some testing using iperf version 2.0.4 but I can't seem to get any more than around 30MB/sec out of the cards.
Is this their limit? Have you managed to get better out of them? If so, how?
Synology have just brought out a NAS box (DS209), that reads and writes at around 60MB/sec, but pretty pointless unless your ethernet card is upto the same speeds.

If your notation is technically correct, you are saying you are getting 30 megabytes per second as your tested speed. That would translate to 240 megabits per second, which is above the old 100 megabits per second limitation. If this is all accurate, then the next question is what cabling and other equipment are you using to connect the two? If the cabling is not Cat6 (category 6) you may not be able to achieve optimal transfer speeds. If you are using a hub, switch, or router which is not gigabit rated, you would have limitations there.

  • Ethernet Cards(NICs) in RAC setup

    Question 1.
In the diagram, I can see eth0 and eth1 in both nodes. They are physical ethernet cards (NICs). Right?
    Question 2.
Each node having 2 ethernet cards is industry's standard practice. Right?
    Question 3.
For Private InterConnect ===>One ethernet card from each node, connected via Switch1
For Public InterConnect plus Connection to Shared storage  ====> One ethernet card from each node, connected via Switch2Is this the standard practice in Production DBs?

    Question 2.
Each node having 2 ethernet cards is industry's standard practice. Right?Yes and No. Yes, typically 2 ethernet ports. Servers usually will have 4 or more ports, if one also includes the management ethernet ports of the server. (but these cannot be used by o/s or RAC/Grid software).
If one wants to have failover for either the private or public interfaces, then at least 2 physical interfaces are needed for each. E.g. eth0 and eth1 will be bonded as logical interface bond0 for the public network, and eth2 and eth3 bonded as bond1 for the private network.
    Question 3.
For Private InterConnect ===>One ethernet card from each node, connected via Switch1
For Public InterConnect plus Connection to Shared storage ====> One ethernet card from each node, connected via Switch2
Is this the standard practice in Production DBs?Yes - fundamentally this is correct. You want your Interconnect to be a fully private network with a dedicated switch. That said, high availability does not mean all your connectivity eggs in a single basket. If you have a single private switch, that is a single point of failure for the entire cluster. If you have a single private interface, that is a single point of failure for that node to the Interconnect (cable failures are not uncommon).
Thus you should be looking at redudancy at both the switch and the NIC/interface levels.

  • Ethernet card physical address

    Good morning guru,
Is it posible using sql to get the information about
the Ethernet Card Physical Address local computer (network card address) ?
mayble something like : select ecard from dual ?
If no, any idea how can I got it ?
    Thank's

    Simple answer - no.
Complex answer/response - what on earth for?
On the server side, you have to crack open the physical network packet header to get to the MAC address of sender. And that is not a simplistic thing to do, and outside the scope of PL/SQL and even Java stored procs.
Why? Because you need access to the physical packet - which you do not have. In PL/SQL and Java in Oracle, you're already at a fairly abstract level. With a shared server process, your code do not even deal with the network communication side with the client. That is done with by the dispatcher processes. So even if you could somehow hack the data segment of your physical Oracle process running your PL/SQL or Java code, the socket and packet data are not there to be found.
Which begs the question why do you want to use it? It is pretty meaningless higher up is the OSI stack. And your code is running in topmost layer, layer - the application layer. Layer 6 does not show your layer, the MAC address.
So the reasoning for wanting the MAC address need to be closely re-examined - as the "solution" for that requirement, using the MAC address, is likely a very much flawed solution.

  • Ethernet card - is it my problem

I am trying to put OS9 on a firewire drive and am a little rusty.
It boots fine but I am not on the internet. I have an ethernet card as the original one is nonfunctional. Is this a problem.
I am using a G4 Quicksilver which connects fine on X.
I am using a router on cable modem. I have DHCP checked on the TCP control panel and have not entered a DNS address.
    Any help appreciated.
    Lewis

    Hi, Lewis -
Okay, I see - you are trying to set up OS 9 to connect via etherent to the web, rather than trying to install OS 9 on a firewire drive.
Setting the "Configure via" mode to "Use DHCP Server" will result in blanks for the addresses (IP, subnet, and router), until the server can be contacted and supplies them; on mine the Client address remains blank at all times.
Apparently the blockage is in reaching the server.
Your QuickSilver's built-in ethernet port is auto-switching, and so when using that there is no need to be particular about whether you are using a Crossover or a Patch type cable to connect to the end device. However, if the new (added) ethernet card does not have an auto-switching port, and if the router does not, then it would make a difference.
If that is the case (neither has auto-switching ports), then if the router and modem are separate items you should use a Patch type cable. But, if they are the same piece of hardware, you would then need to use a Crossover type cable.

    Ethernet Cable: Color Coding Standard
    Other things -
AppleTalk can sometimes interfere with gaining a sucessful ethernet connection. In those cases, just turning AppleTalk off may not be sufficient - it can be quite tenacious about hanging onto a port. The solution for that is to set AppleTalk to use a different port. You can make that setting in the AppleTalk control panel.
Be sure that both the extensions named Shared Library Manager and Shared Library Manager PPC are enabled in Extensions Manager. Ditto all extensions whose names includes Open Transport or OpenTpt. If you need to enable anything, restart to make the change active.
Try throwing away the file ASLM Preferences (it can be found in the Preferences folder in System Folder). Empty the Trash, then restart. ("ASLM" = "Apple Shared Library Manager")
