200MHz K7N2G FSB Request Petition...

Hi all,
i have recently bought an MSI K7N2G, which with the unlocked 1700TBred, on a multi of 9.5 sits at 200MHz CAS2 with my Corsair Twinx PC3200.
This is lovely - but i would love to push my memory even higher - in sync with the CPU.
I request that this post be forwarded to whoever it may concern - and humbly request they include in their BIOS the option to increase the FSB synchronously with CPU to above 200MHz.
All other nforce2 boards (namely Epox) are achieving such speeds - so we know the chipset is up to it - and i like MSIs products - this is the third MSI board i have owned - all have been solid boards.
It should be mentioned also , that due to my K7N2G-L only having passive northbridge cooling i needed to add extra cooling to the3 board - but it is 100% stable at 200MHz FSB.
So, if you agree put your name below - and lets see if MSI listen to their customers!
MSI, I'd like a BIOS release which enables me to have an FSB >200MHz.
Signed,
D Cooke    10/03/03

i refuse to believe it is not possible - unless MSI strayed so far away from the nforce2 design as to render it less functional?
If MSI hadnt cut corners and equipped the K7N2G-L with a northbridge fan there would be fewer instability/RMA'd boards as a result of this BIOS update request - or even with standard BIOS issues.  I have had to add extra cooling to my northbridge to acheive 200MHz with 100% stability.
Every other serious nforce2 board had 200MHz as an FSB option when it launched.  They NOW have at least 220MHz, some even as high as 250MHz.
I have owned 3 different nforce2 boards - all perform equally well - very little in it.  People will buy other makers when they know they:
A) MSI dont listen to their customers (We're only requesting something which is available on most all competitiors.
B) MSI cant make an enthusiasts board.
C) MSI make boards less functional by straying away from reference designs (If that is why you cant acheive >200MHz FSB?
If someone from MSI is/has read this please drop a line to say so - at least we'll know we are reaching the people who matter.
Thanking You

    Well, it's a limiter and it's not
It only allows you to set your memory at a certain speed WHEN not being OC'ed....
    Let me explain:
At "FSB?" 200 and set to 400DDR you get 400DDR=200MHz
At "FSB?" 200 and set to 333DDR you get 333DDR=166MHz
    BUT!!!!! Pay attention now!!!!
At "FSB?" 210 and set to 400DRR you get 420DDR=210MHz
At "FSB?" 210 and set to 333DDR you get 342DDR=177MHz (not sure if they are exact but should be close, just to get an idea)
The thing is, YOU DON'T HAVE A FSB!!!!!!
The thing they call "FSB?" in the BIOS is in fact only a reference clock, nothing more.
As the Memory controller is also running at CPU speed, the memory speed is a divider from the reference clock.
Another common mistake is that people think they have a north-bridge....well you have one, and it's located INSIDE the CPU...so if you change the reference clock you also change the NB (=memory controller) speed but the dividers/multipliers stay the same.
The only thing that doesn't change as far as I know is the Hyperthreading bus, that one is locked all the time, well at least it's here on my Opteron system, and should be the same on AMD64.

  • Limiting memory overclock, how?

    Hi there,
I have some Mushkin PC3500 Level II 2x256 memory, no matter what setting I try I can't seem to get it to lock at 200 on my Neo Platinum.
If I put in a stick of PC2700 the memory then sets to 166 as it should.
Any idea how I lock my PC3500 at 200? or will that only work with PC3200 memory?
    Cheers

I might be wrong here (aint got my board yet) but I dont think you can actully "lock" your RAM-speed.
If you want to go above 200mhz HTT(fsb) but do not wnat your ram to rise above 200, I belive you would have to change the ram to 166 manually, they will still rise with the HTT though.
Perhaps this (rather extreme) example from speeduk shows it better:
    Quote
    memory @ 133 so it clocks up to 196mhz @ 294mhz HT
So setting the ram-speed at 200/166/133/100 will actully set it at a "ratio" compared to the HTT
Perhaps someone can explain better ?
Or even correct me, if I got it all wrong

  • Memory tests

I am building a Media Centre machine, spec as in my signature. The  machine will suddenly freeze or just reboots. Advice given suggests
1 Memory problem of some kind
2 Temperature is on the high side
3 Mobo drivers are not installed
    4 PSU is underpowered
Have now run several Mem 86 tests of 1 hour duration with my two memory sticks, stick A and stick B, in different slot positions.
I get memory problems with all combinations of the two sticks if one or the other is in slot 3.  This slot must be used for dual channel memory.  With either of the two memory sticks on their own no problem was found except for one case when stick A failed in slot 1 after nearly an hour.  With the two sticks in slots 1 & 2 which gives single channel memory operation no fault was found after 90 mins of Mem86.
What is faulty, one or both memory sticks, the board or my setting?
    MSI drivers are installed.
CPU is running at 2.2Ghz and 200Mhz(400DDR) FSB
    CPU:DRAM ratio is 1:1
Memory timings are set by SPD
Max CPU temp so far noted was 56 C.
    Thanks

I have now checked the Corsair site for compatible memory with the K7N2 Delta 2 LSR board.  Should have done this before.  My memory, Corsair VS512MB400C3, is compatible but no timings given. Presumably because it’s not compatible with the main board for dual memory operation.  My timings by SPD are 3-3-3-8.
Since no error was found by MEM86 with the memory sticks in slots 1 & 2, single memory operation, I fired the machine up as my Media Centre.  No problem.  It’s now been running as a tv for 3 hours without a blip. I might tinker with the timings out of interest but forget the dual channel bit.
However I would now like to return the XP 3200+ to my desk top machine and put some thing smaller in this Media Centre machine.  I could then reduce the fan speed and the noise a bit. At the moment the CPU is about 13% utilised (from the Task Manager).  This would presumably go up when I record etc.  Any suggestions of a suitable CPU.  Would a Sempron 2300+ (1.58 GHz) do the job?  I have no feel for these things.
Thanks for the comments on the use of MEM86. I will run it for much longer in future.
Overall it's been a long haul to get this machine off the ground.  My thanks to you all.

  • MSI KT6 Delta-FISR (MS-6590 v2.0) & XP3200+ Can't get 200MHz FSB

    Hi,
Having searched for this common problem I have purchased a new PSU (Antec True Power 2 550w) so I don't think it is this. The memory is meant to be compatible according to the crucial site too.
Basically I changed from an ASRock mobo (no 4 pin CPU power connector) to the KT6 to get onboard firewire. The same CPU had been working in the ASRock mobo at 200Mhz FSB with a SilentMaxx PSU (fanless +3.3v /28A, +5v/35A, +12v/16A). As I had moved the computer from the lounge to study I changed the PSU when I installed the KT6 to an Antec True 380SP (+3.3v /28A, +5v/35A, +12v/24A) to get a reduction in temperature.
The system booted with a FSB of 100Mhz. So I changed in the BIOS FSB to 200Mhz and the system wouldn't get to the XP login page. I then tried steps up from 100Mhz and got to 120Mhz. After searching here I saw the PSU issue and so changed to the SilentMaxx. This would get past the login page at 200Mhz but would crash within 2 minutes.
I then changed to an Advance PSIV-500-2 (+3.3v /30A, +5v/32A, +12v/16A). This would login at 200MHz and was stable until you did anything CPU intensive - 2 mins of divx encoding caused the crash.
So now for the Antec True Power 2, it gets past the login screen but won't load the desktop. Starting at 100Mhz I can get to 125MHz, so I'm now worse than with the original Advance PSU.
So, with the changes being seen whenever the PSU is changed the indications are that it is the PSU, but now with the new Antec True Power 2 550w I can't believe it is still that.
    Any ideas?

    Hi again.
Well I've finally got around to doing the XP repair. The good news is that the system boots and stays up under normal usage at 200MHz. The bad news is that under stress (encoding video) it reboots with the following error:
    Error code 0000000a, parameter1 ffe00124, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 804db848.
I have searched the internet and can't find any mention of '804db848' or 'ffe00124'. So am now thinking the board may be bad?
I have set my memory to CL3, with timings of 3-3-8 and voltage of 2.6v (as per manufacturer recommendations) and this memory did not cause problems on my ASRock board.
    Two things I have noticed:
    1. The case temp is very high, under idle CPU = 48C and case = 41C, under stress CPU = 58C and case = 51C. I have two 120mm case fans and the PSU has a 120mm fan too. My hard disks are 28C and 29C. When I had the ASRock board in the same case with the same fans etc it never went above 36C (which I thought was still quite high).
    2. After searching this board I found a post that stated they had success at 192MHz FSB but unstable on 200MHz (K7N board). I will now try this and kick off the video encoding again and report back.

  • FSB spread spectrum setting and AGP spread spectrum setting on K7n2G-I

For the combo K7n2G-ILSR and athalon xp 2400 what would be the best setting for the FSB spread spectrum: disabled, 50%, or 1%. and for the AGP spread spectrum: disabled, 50%. does it make a diff.? Can I leave them set at disabled even though I do not plan on overclocking? Anyone know? Does this affect video output(i dont think so) Thanks for any help-

    Yes, leave them both disabled.

    K7N2G 6570: Can it run XP3000+ 400 FSB with External VGA & 400 RAM
I have a K7N2G 6570. I am running an AGP graphics card. I have 400 FSB ram. Can I run the XP 3000 + with the 400 FSB?
I read similar posts but none really answer if this is a runnable scenario. They only reference that the official spec is 333 with the built in graphics.
    Help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

According to this link about the K7N2G, It will suopport a 400fsb cpu by using an external video card.

  • 200mhz fsb support

    Hiya, just a quick question.
Will the K7N2-L support the 200mhz FSB athlons when they get released later on this year?
I hope that it will, as i currently have the above mentioned board with an 1700+ cpu running at 11*166fsb.

Only the new (as yet unreleased i think) delta k7n2's official support it.  However as so many people are easily reaching 200 fsb you should be able to overclock the motherboard to the chips stock speeds.  Only problem with this is if msi do not realease a bios with fsbs greater than 200 youll only be able to overclock the new athlons by the multiplier alone.

When I try to set the FSB to a value like 195Mhz the computer will load normally, start to load Window's XP Home SP1 and restart. Other values such as 200Mhz would simply refuse to boot and hang with no video or keyboard LED's lighting up. So far I'm only able to run this setting sucessfully.

As for the begining lower the multiplayer and than set the fsb speed. Few days ago Kingfisher wrote a guide about o/c. It includes basics but You shall read it https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=40413&sid= and for more I suggest You use googl and read some articles. GreetZ

  • 200MHz FSB when I want 800MHz

This is probably a rather simple/stupid question but I have an 800MHz FSB P4 and 2 banks of DDR400 and therefore thought I would get a FSB of 800MHz.  However, when I check CoreCentre it records an FSB speed of 203MHz, multiplier of 13 giving the CPU speed of 2637MHz.  What am I doing wrong, if anything?

  • K7N2G-ILSR won\\\\\\\'t run memtest at 133MHz fsb

I've already sent an inquiry to MSI technical support but I'm posting here too.
I've owned a DFI AD70 for 1 year running a 1.4GHz Thunderbird, but it has not worked right from the start with 1 DIMM slot being dead the whole time.  I bought the MSI board as my stability hasn't been perfect and the one game my wife likes to play with me, Age of Kings, crashes constantly during it. :(
Here' the system I installed the ILSR board in:
    TigerPro 300 Watt Power Supply,
    Tekram DC390F SCSI controller
    Maxtor 40GB 7200 Hard Drive
    IBM 4.5GB SCSI Hard Drive
    SCSI ZIP Drive
    Plextor 40X12X20 IDE CD-RW
    NEC 32X SCSI CD-ROM
    BestData 56k (Rockwell) Modem
    2- 256MB Samsung PC2100 DIMMS
I was using a soundblaster live, and Asus 6800 Geforce
    card in my DFI system.
Everything worked well in install, but game Age of Kings was still not stable with MSI board.  Instead of crashing or rebooting it would just freeze.  After trying Windows 2000 service packs, and every patch I could find, I resorted to pulling out all my expansion cards and disconnecting all the drives but my Maxtor IDE and Floppy.  I also disabled everything but onboard video.  The game still froze.  Finally I tried underclocking the processor.  This worked well.  I could run the game as long as I was at 130MHz fsb or less.  At 133 it would always fail.
Finally after scouring this message board I downloaded memtest-86 v 3.0.  I removed my maxtor hard drive so now I had only the bare motherboard and floppy installed.  I ran it at default settings and memtest froze 2 minutes into the test.  Then I gradually lowered fsb by 1 MHz until I could get it to run for hours at 128MHz (stability in Win 2000 was excellent at this setting too).  At 129 it would freeze.  The only other settings that worked were lowering clock multiplier to 8.0 and using 133 MHz bus.  It also runs fine at 133 MHz memory clock and 100MHz FSB.  I tried using my Asus video card without onboard video and same freezing problem.
I also reinstalled my old DFI board, with just my video card and floppy and it ran memtest fine at 133MHz fsb, and the memory modules passed fine.
I was hoping to just buy new RAM, but it works fines for me. There were never any errors reported during any memetest run ?(  Also of note I haven't flashed my BIOS if that matters.  Any ideas?

    3.3V 14A, 5V 30A, 12V 15A
    160W combined 3.3V, 5V
The MSI utility says power output is 3.3V, 5V, and 11.70V when I'm running Windows.  Although I thought this was low, it runs fine on the old board.
Temps run 52C CPU, system 32C after it has been running for several hours.
I placed a large 21 inch oscillating fan facing straight into the side of my case on high speed, with the case open, and memtest actually failed quicker, but it dropped CPU temp to 51C, and system to 28C.
At 133 MHz, the BIOS is stable and so is Windows 2000, but most games will freeze eventually and Age of Kings right away.
