23.98fps Clip in 29.97fps Sequence in Soundtrack Pro Lesson?

I am using the Apple Pro Training Series "Sound Editing in FCS".
The media I am using from the accompanying DVD is DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, 2.9MB/Sec and with a frame rate of 23.98fps.
The sequences have a frame rate of 29.97fps.
Can anyone explain exactly what the media is and why there is this apparent mis-match?
It plays and sounds OK.

Some video cameras can shoot at 23.976 frames per second to simulate a 24 fps film look.
The DV/DVCPro (tape) recording standard can only record 29.97 frames per second. To accommodate this, the recorder adds a 3:2 pull-down to the 23.976 to make (force) it to 29.97. Depending on the recorder, this 3:2 pull-down can be removed with software to re-create the original 23.976 clip as created by the camera.
So, your clip uses the DV/DVCPro compression codec but could be 23.976 or 29.97 fps. Open the clip in QuickTime, hit Cmnd-I and see what the file really is.

  • How can I revert my audio clips that I have edited in Soundtrack Pro back to the original audio?

I edited a project in FCP6 and sent numerous audio clips to Soundtrack Pro where I sampled and removed some AC and fridge compressor
hum from some interview footage.  I'm sending the project out for professional sound mixing and they advised me to restore the original
audio to prevent the creation of artifacts when they process the sound in a different program.
Is there some way to "revert" all my clips that I edited in Soundtrack Pro back to the original audio without going back to
my original interview footage and cutting in clip by clip?  (Next time I'll save my original audio on a duplicate timeline -- live and learn!)
Thanks in advance for any helpful ideas!

What happens if duplicate the sequence, then choose one of them to use "match frame" to get back to the original clips?

  • When I bring an FCP sequence into ST Pro, something is very screwy....help!

When I bring a sequence into soundtrack pro, some odd things happne, I'm hoping someone can answer my questions. First off, it slows my computer waaaaaaaaaaaay down. It moves extremely slow so I can't even do any work. The project is on a Lacie firewire 800 drive.
It also seems the audio isn't really included with the project. Even though the audio waveforms should show up in the audio clips, it doesn't. It does on a couple clips but doesn't in most. When I double click an audio clip to create a new audio file project to edit it, most of the functions aren't available (like noise removal). And the sample waveform still isn't visible.
My guess to why this is happening is that ST Pro is using referencing the source files which is causing it to be slowed down and is also causing the odd occurance of no waveform and no ability to effect the clips. I tried saving the project with the box checked that says something like "include audio files" and it says I don't have the room for this. This strikes me as odd because I have 50 gigs available.
I could export AIFF's for each track in the project and then reassemble them in soundtrack but then I'd have to edit out all the dead space to re-create what I should be able to get simply by exporting to ST pro.
Should I decompose the sequence prior to sending it to ST Pro? I hope these questions make sense, please let me know if they dont and please leave any advice you can.

Yes, I did reset the scratch disks, but the slowness of the program is the least of my concerns. (I checked the console, everything appears fine).
My main problem is that when I import a multitrack prjoect from FCP, not all the waveforms are visible. Only 1/3 of the clips have the little visible waveforms inside them. If I double click a clip that doesn't have the waveform inside of it, and open an audio project file in hopes of doing noice print removal or other effects, it will not allow me to do any effects. I can hear everything fine, just can't do any effects or any "set ambient noise print", noise removal etc... It also displays the entire length of the original clip in the audio project file (like if its from tape 1, it brings in the entire hour of tape 1).
The way the manual talks about it, I should be able to simply bring in a project, do with it as I please, then export a mix, and it'd be great if I could.
The only workaround I can think of is to seperate each track, export an AIFF for each track, import it into soundtrack, razor all the places where I had cuts in the FCP project, bring in the video, and then I could actually start working.
And is it odd that apple doesn't support this program AT ALL. I called apple and the only way to get help is pay $800 for pro support.
Lesson learned, buy Pro Tools LE, use OMF's and be done with it.

  • Saved sequences in Premiere Pro CC acting oddly, striped clips, green clips, blue clips...

Rather new user to PP. Can't even find this question asked anywhere.
    1. The other day, I created some sequences. Each sequence has its own bin and the source footage is in the bin.
    2. Today I open up the sequences and though the source footage is intact & shows in the preview pane, it does not appear in the Program pane. Instead, the clips are either blue striped or just blue. The striped ones don't play audio or video. The blue ones only play audio.
    3. So, I made a test sequence. I imported the footage again, placed it in its own bin with the test sequence. Added some clips to the sequence. Closed the project & reopened it. The sequence was duplicated somehow. Dup #1 plays perfectly. Dup #2 appears with the clip having a green bar instead of blue, and the clips have merged together in the sequence.
What the heck is going on?
Striped & blue clips. No visual for either. Audio only for blue.
Green clip that merged from 2 clips to 1 in a duplicated sequence that I did not do.
"Normal" Blue clip in test sequence. This is the one that Premiere duplicated, merged, and changed green after closing/reopening project.

I've restarted it several times, and actually other projects are working like clockwork in Premiere, so I think it has to do with the source file links.
I moved all the source files to a new folder, and when I opened this project again, almost all of the sequences were back to normal ... except for one. It duplicated itself, merged all the clips together & turned green (like the image I posted earlier). So what does this green bar mean? Why is it duplicating sequences & merging the clips together within the sequences?

  • How to edit a clip in a multicam sequence (CS6)?

I am using Premiere CS6 on Mac, I have a multicam sequence set up (2 cam).
I just want to color correct cam 2 to match cam 1 and I cannot figure it out. Everything I try applies the correction to the entire sequence.
If someone can provide exact steps to apply color correction to one clip in the sequence only (it's just brightness/contract, nothing complicated), so that it's reflected in the multicam sequence I'd be grateful. Even a link to a tutorial would be good as I cannot seem to find it online (almost everything points to CC which I don't use and is totally different than CS6).
    Please help!

Ok, I finally figured it out, no thanks to Adobe's crap "Help" system, which is missing MANY steps...
    1. Right-click the Multi-Camera Source Sequence in the Project tab (NOT the multicam sequence you're editing). It's the one with the green/blue lines perfectly lined up.
    2. Choose Open in Timeline.
    3. In the Timeline, make the edits you want to the clip you want (in this case, Brightness/Contrast on clip 2)
    4. Go to Window > Multi-Camera Monitor
    5. You'll see your source clips stacked in the window, and you can fine tune from here.
    6. Click on the Multi-Camera Sequence you're editing in the Timeline, and the Monitor should update to reflect your changes.
You can toggle back and forth between these sequences in the timeline, adjusting as you need.
This was incredibly easy for me to document, I really fail to understand why the Help file couldn't be bothered. It's completely missing things like what the difference is between the source multicam sequence and the program multicam sequence, how to edit a clip in your multicam sequence, and how the multicam monitor works. Really pisspoor documentation, but at this point, I don't expect anything else from Adobe.

  • Making sub-clips in a multicam sequence

    Hi,
I used two cameras conducting while conducting an interview, and I'd like to be able to make sub-clips of the parts I want to use of my multicam sequence.  Is that possible?
    Warm regards,
    Bob Fischer

I have a similar issue. I have a two camera shoot that I have synched up. I haven't done the multicam edit yet.
It is of a museum exhibit opening gala. So, there is a linear timeline of singers, speakers, singers, speakers.
    < Clip One --singers -- singers -- speaker -- speaker -- speaker -- singers -- singers -->
    < Clip Two --singers -- singers -- speaker -- speaker -- speaker -- singers -- singers -->
What I need to do is to take the footage - 35 Minutes - and trim it down to 3 minutes. What I need to do is show singers doing one song (multicam) then fade out the audio, bring up b-roll footage and audio, bring back in singers, fade out singers and bring in speakers (singers as backround audio while speaker speaks) and - this important - speakers are part of the two clips that make up the entire multicam sequence.
So, I could multicam everything first and then use that footage as my basis for cutting, adding b-roll and cutting entire speeches, songs, etc.
Or, I could set markers in the original multiclip synched sequence marking the beginnings of each "event" I could use the razor tool and start hacking it up and sliding it around. Then resynch all cut clips from the two sequences and multicam from there.
    Is this clear at all?
    Thanks.

  • Is it possible to select multiple clips and create a sequence from each individually?

Is it possible to select multiple clips and create a sequence from each individually?  If you select multiple clips and select "New Sequence from Clip" it puts all of the clips into one sequence.  Is there an easy way to quickly perform this on multiple selected clips separately?

So now I *have* used Butler with PPro, and it works very well, here's an idea of how to do it:
    Import folder of clips
Ensure first clip selected in bin and sorted by Media Type
Most of these commands need shortcuts assigning - mine listed below
    Macro:
To create seq from selected clip:
      ‘New seq from clip’ (Shift+CMD+N)
    To duplicate this seq:
‘Reveal Sequence in project’ (Shift+F) - not strictly necessary as it will already be selected
      ‘Window | Project’ (CMD+9)
      ‘Edit | Duplicate’ (Shift+CMD+/)
    To rename the duplicate
      ‘Enter’
Various keystrokes to rename as required
‘Enter’ - to make name stick
‘Shift+Enter’ - to reselect that sequence
‘Esc’ - to get out of editing name
    To change resolution of duplicate:
      ‘Sequence Settings’ (CMD+5)
‘Tab’ x 3 (to get to H Frame Size)
      ‘xxxx’ (to enter frame width)
‘Tab’ x 1 (to get to V Frame Size)
      ‘yyyy’ (to enter frame height
‘Enter’ x 2 as prompt will say previews will have to be deleted
To then find next clip ready for macro to run again:
      ‘Open in Timeline’ (Shift+CMD+O)
      ‘Match Frame’ (Shift+Spacebar)
      ‘Reveal in Project’ (Shift+CMD+F)
      ‘Window | Project’ (CMD+9)
‘Down Arrow’ - to select next clip
I tried it with Butler (manytricks.com - free trial, $20 to buy) and it worked a treat, takes about 3 secs per clip
AHK (for windows) is at autohotkeys.com and is free.
You could start making multiple macros - that would enable you to do grade / resize in middle of duplication - and then export etc, but I figure you can figure that out ;-)

  • Deleting all Clip Markers in a Sequence

Many of the clips in my sequence have Markers. I would now like to remove them all so my sequence is devoid of Clip Markers.
Mark>Markers>Delete All will happily remove any +Sequence Markers+ I have, but will not remove any of the +Clip Markers+. Is there a way to delete all clip markers from the sequence. Preferably, I would like to remove them from the sequence while leaving them in their original master clips.
    Thanks,
    Martin

    James M. wrote:

Does it, in the process, also remove the markers from the master clip as it appears outside the sequence?

  • Combine NTSC & PAL clips in same project & sequence

My project uses both NTSC and PAL DV clips. I've finished logging in all NTSC clips and I'm getting started logging in PAL clips. Any suggestions in logging in PAL ---besides changing Easy Setup to PAL. I'm concerned about having both formats in my browser. Will it crash FCP? One Creative suggested creating separate bins to log into. Another Creative suggested creating a separate project for just the PAL material. But, then, how do I use both NTSC clips and PAL clips in the same sequence?? *Help, please!!!*

You can have many different formats in your project but you can only have one sequence setting. You must choose what the output format will be, NTSC or PAL. You can do both but if I recall, the procedure's really complicated. You'll make a copy of your NTSC sequence and change it to PAL but it's not that easy. All of your renders will be gone, just for starters.
The manual has a large section on combining different formats, start there, not here.
You obviously have a deck capable of playing both formats?

  • Anamorphic dimensions skewed when clips copied from one sequence to another

I'm in the process of editing a lengthy video documentary using footage captured on a Canon FS100 DV camera. I'm using the DV file format and set my project to NTSC DV Anamorphic (since I believe that to be the proper format based on the source video I'm working with).
In one specific sequence I'm working on, all of the video clips I'm using properly appear as anamorphic with an anamorphic Viewer and Canvas. However, other sequences (and I didn't notice this until many hours of work editing clips) appear to be in the 4:3 dimension format. The source anamorphic clips appear as anamorphic within the 4:3 in the Viewer and Canvas. The problem is that when I copy a clip from one of the 4:3 sequences to the working Anamorphic sequence, it resizes/skews the source video clip to look shorter and wider.
I have taken screen captures which I identify what I'm talking about though I don't see a way to include them in this post. I can email them to anyone who needs the visual to better understand my problem.
What have I done wrong? Is there any way to non-destructively re-dimension the sequences to an anamorphic format so I don't lose 20 hours of clip editing?
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Mark

Thanks, Tom. You've helped me solve my problem -- and hours of editing.
Here are the procedures I followed:
    1) Selected the anamorphic clip in the 4:3 sequence I wanted to copy to the anamorphic sequence. Keyboard shortcut: Command-C
    2) Pasted the clip in the anamorphic sequence. Keyboard shortcut: Command-V
    3) Selected the pasted clip and called up the 'Remove Attributes' pop-up. Keyboard shortcut: Command-Option-V
    4) Made sure the Distort checkbox is checked. Clicked OK.
    5) Voila!!!
Of course, this can be done with a group of clips. Another trick is to create a new sequence that is set up as desired (e.g. NTSC DV Anamorphic), copy the entire 4:3 sequence, paste it in the new sequence and then bulk remove the distort attribute.

  • Finished clips were dropped from sequence

    Hi there...
I have been working on a project in Final Cut Express. I always Render All and Save before I close out. The last time I opened the application, some finished clips I had in my sequence were dropped. I did a search for them and found them listed in my Render Files folder as
    Sequence 1 - FIN - 00000010
    Sequence 1 - FIN - 00000011
    Sequence 1 - FIN - 00000012
    ...and so on.
    So, two questions -
    (1) Why were these finished clips dropped from the sequence?
    (2) How do I bring them back into the sequence?
Thank you so much for your feedback!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
    Simply render your sequence again.
Sometimes, render files can disapears without explaination (FCE 2 was prone to this behavior).

  • I'm trying to import a sequence into premiere pro and suddenly a few sections are 'media offline'

I'm trying to import a previous premiere pro sequence into premiere pro and suddenly a few sections are 'media offline' (it has always worked up until now).  I would be able to relink the clips but the offending ones aren't showing up in the project's clip bin. To make things worse I can't drag and drop the corresponding clips from my finder into the clips bin and then 'replace clip with' in the timeline, as the clips in the project have been renamed, and are synced up to audio (this is a 90 minute feature film).
    Can anyone help??!!

Right click on the offline clips and select Reveal in Project.  This will call up the bin they're in, where you'll be able to relink.

  • Importing After effects sequences to premier pro with camera and effects

    Hi there,
I'm gonna try n put this across as best as I can. I have made a short film of 6 minutes (in 6 parts on after effects) I have added all the effects and the camera work on AE, but it needs a lot of editing here and there, which I find impossible to do on AE since you can't cut and join scenes like Premier pro. I need to import all these sequences onto premier pro for editing now. The problem is once I import the files, it imports in the right order in systematic folders etc, but it doesn't show any of the camera work or the special effects like gaussian blur etc. All my hard work has gone.
There must be a way you can import the after effects file on premier the way it looks on AE. Can somebody please help me?
Another problem is I read some boards and it has been suggested to edit the clips first on premier and then add effects on AE but I read this really late and I've already composited the whole film on AE. I just need premier for cutting now.
Thanks for any help in advance.
    Cheers,
    Nikhita
P.S: I also thought about exporting the AE sequences as TGA files but there's ZERO space left in my internal hard disk for that, and it would take forever to export them all anyway. Any other kind of export would reduce the original quality which I dont want, and which I dont have space for anyway, so that option is out as well.

Every production house in the world that is working on more than one project uses external storage for their video files. As long as the drive name and path do not change you have no problems.
Lossless or nearly lossless means that. No visible reduction in quality. That's why every production house that knows what they are doing uses production codecs in their workflow. Production codecs range from uncompressed (which very few use) to Avid, Black Magic Design, ProRez and a host of other specialized codecs. Jpeg2000 and png QuickTime can store alpha channels as well as a bunch of other 3rd party codecs.
The way you start loosing quality is to use highly compressed formats like H.264 or MPEG or AVCHD in your production pipeline. It is usually OK to start with these codecs as original footage if the camera you used only offers these options, but any use of a delivery format in the production pipeline for anything but delivery is not a good idea.

  • FCP Audio Clips in Soundtrack Pro - Marking the Start & End Points

When I double click on an audio clip that I've sent from FCP into Soundtrack Pro I seem to open up the entire media file.
How do I lock off or at least mark the clip start & end?
I don't see any markers that tell me which part of the clip is actually used in the imported FCP sequence.
I only want to make (non-destructive) changes to the clip.
I don't want to alter the original media file.
And I just want to work on the part that's used in the FCP sequence.
It makes sense that there's a way to show the start & end points of the clip but I'm just not seeing it.

I am a bit of a newb here, so pardon if my explanation is a little unpolished, but I have been working on some of my projects like you are and this is what i figured out. I select my sequence in FCP and send to stp as a multitrack project. The whole audio timeline shows up just as it looks in fcp, and the video track shows as one large clip that is made up of all my cuts put together. Now, my audio tracks are all on one line, and i can see all the clips with their cuts on the sequence. I click the first one and open it up to work on in the waveform editor. At that point i see the entire audio clip, including the part before and after my cut that i am using in my sequence, but i also see, up near the playhead, gray markers that show the actual part of the clip i am using in my edit. It is easest to hit shift-z to look at the entire clip on screen, and then find the grey markers. Also, if you play audio before the in marker, you will hear it but you will see that the video is not playing anything, then once you enter into the in-out section the video will play along, and when you pass the out marker the video freezes as the audio keeps playing. Hope this helps.
