2511 Terminal server setup
I'm trying to setup a 2511 as a terminal server. I've connected the ethernet port to the console port of the device I need remote access to. Followed all the steps on this page http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk801/tk36/technologies_configuration_example09186a008014f8e7.shtml#cs
I've given the loopback a non routable IP (172.22.2.1) and used the same to define my IP host
ip host router 2008 172.22.2.1
but when I telnet from the 2511 using the command telnet 172.22.2.1 2008 it telnets to the 2511 itself and hangs!!! what am I doing wrong? Do I need to do anything on the device that I want to have remote access to?

I'm reading this with great interest, as I have the same problem as Uzma, and could really do with some help. First of all, I have a 2511 access server (IOS 10.2) with two octal cables connected to a stack 11 routers and switches (various flavours of IOS from 11.x to 12.3). However, when I reverse telnet to a device from the access server (via a PC connected to the Ethernet port), I have the same problem i.e. Telnet opens, and the cursor drops to the next line with no response from the device. CTRL+SHIFT+6 X returns me to the access server prompt.
I have taken care to do the following:
1. Connect the correct rolled cable to the target device console port in line with the port configured in the host table.
2. Configured the access servers tty lines 1 16 in the manner prescribed.
3. Configured the target devices console port in the manner prescribed.
I've yet to try upgrading the access server, and replacing one or other octal cable.
This is troubling me as this should be a straight forward setup, but is proving otherwise. Help would be much appreciated.

How to bring up mulitpe connections through a terminal server
Ok, I have never been able to figure this out. I have a Cisco 2511 terminal server. Is there a way when using SecureCRT to bring up multiply devices going through the terminal server. What i keep doing is ctrl-shft-6-x but that's only going to be displayed on the same terminal window. I want to have multipe tabs open to the other devices. Other then putting a IP on all the devices and not using the terminal server while telneting I just can't seam to find a way. On videos like CBT nugget he goes through multipe tabs for his devices. I figued there has to be a way.
I believe that this approach should work:
- open a session with SecureCRT.
- telnet to the term server.
- use the term server to open a console session to one device.
- open a new tab in SecureCRT.
- in the new tabl telnet to the term server.
- use the term server to open a console session to another device.
- open a new tab in SecureCRT.
- in the new tab telnet to the term server.
- use the term server to open a console session to another device.
This approach should work up to the max number of vty that are configured. By default that would be 5. You may be able to configure additional vty and if so you should be able to have additional sessions to additional devices.

I am running terminal server 2012 R2 (RDS environment) In Windows Domain, 8 users across a LAN on a new server. Outlook 2013 crashes and will not load in safe mode. Outlook allows the initial profile setup and when the configuration is complete, it
crashes and will not launch or launch in safe mode. I have deleted the outlook profile and reconfigured it. The problem continues on all user accounts. The firm is not using Exchange and is using a POP3 account. I have a 13 user Office Volume License

Issue in a Terminal server config

I am configuring a 2511 as a terminal server. I have two 2511s. One 2511 is OK. The other one gives me an error when I try to paste the same configuration that I have in notepad.
For the command:
line 1 16
modem InOut
it says that, "line 2 does not support modem control"
Then I typed:
(config)#line 0 17
(config-line)#modem InOut
it says, "line 0 does not support modem control.
Now it doesn't talk about line 2, instead it says that line 0 does not support modem control.
In here, the main problem is that, when I type:
(config)#line 1 16
(config-line)#no exec
and when I telnet, the router doesn't even prompt for anything. But when I again say, "exec" in line mode, then the router prompts me for the username.
But when I enter the username, it says:
traying 192.168.1.1, 2001.....
Destination unreachable; gateway or host is down.
Below I will paste the configuration that works in the other 2511 router.

In this setup, I have a loopback interace configured. Basically, everything is OK. The only difference are these two commands don't work like in the 1st router:

then try line 2 and so on and see if we see errors for specific lines only (which we can investigate further)

This error is ok since line 0 is console and does not support modem control, mind you IOS spills out errors one after another so probably would have given error for line 2 next.

Do you mean reverse telnet out of these lines? Not sure I understand what you are trying to do here.
A few things to check:
1. Is the router completely up, means its not in boot mode etc.
2. Are the IOS images different or same on the working vs non working 2511?

Problem with Photoshop hangs/freezing for users on a terminal server
Dear Forum!
I'm having some trouble with Photoshop freezing over a period of ~20 minutes when you (1.) user the eraser with special brushes and (2.) copy and paste material from a PDF to Photoshop. As you might notice by the size of this post i'm getting quite depserate over here and need some help.
A Little background information...
Photoshop CS6 is installed on a terminal server with ~25 Active users where 3 of them are using Photoshop.
The operating system on the server is Windows Server 2012 R2.
There are no additional add-ons just a plain installation of Photoshop in that matter.
The server uses 40-60% of the memory most of the time (mostly a bit less, some times a bit more but never 100%) and 40% of the CPU.
There's enough space free on the disc.
The problem in detail...
There are two occasions where the freezing has occured most of the time. After it hangs for the first time, it will happen everytime you do any of the operations over a period of ~20 minutes and it's Mutual for all users. When it freezes, the whole terminal session freezes but the program i still responding (it's not getting set to "not responding") when viewed from Another user through the task manager. Ending the process as an administrator sometimes work, although from the moment i end he proces it takes about 10-60 seconds Before the program actually Closes and the user gets back Control. The easiest thing to do most of the time is if an administrator forces them to log out.
1. The first occasion is when you use the eraser with a brush that's not standard but manually added. The names of the brush packages used are:
Extacy__Elemental
KKC_Fractal
Kornkid's_Grunge_Set
and the problem is with all brushes inside those packages. The way i evoke the problem is the following:
1. Start Photoshop
2. Create new
3. Fill the background with any color
4. Select the eraser tool
5. Change the brush to one of the ones mentioned above
6. Program freezes
2. The second scenario when the problem occurs is when the users copy something from a PDF to Photoshop. The way i evoke this is:
1. Open a PDF
2. Select area and copy it
3. Open Photoshop
4. Create new
5. Paste into Photoshop
6. Program freezes
Solutions we have tried so far...
I've been working on this for several round now and i'm not entirely sure on what exactly i have done. I will try and do the following solutions once more but i'm pretty sure that i have tried most of them.
Update graphic card drivers.
Resetting all Tools:
1. Select options for a tool
2. choose "Reset all Tools"
Resetting presets:
1. Hold ctrl + shift + alt while Photoshop is starting
2. select "yes"
Tested if it matters if i have a pen connected or not, which it doesn't.
Removed the special brushes (but it still freezes when copy/paste from PDF)
Removed "save in background" and "automatically save recovery information" options
Updated to latest version.
Turned off OpenGL
Solutions i haven't, but will try...
Reinstall Photoshop
Change font preview size
1. Go to "type"
2. select "Font prview size"
3. select "none"
Delete system font cache
Close all Adobe applications including the Creative Cloud desktop app (if installed).
Navigate to \Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\Appdata\Local
Delete the *FNTCACHE*.DAT or *FontCache*.dat files.
NOTE: The asterisk (*) indicates various numbers, letters, or words, such as FontCache-S-1-5-21.dat or COFFfntCache.dat.
Delete Photoshop font cache
Exit Photoshop and the Creative Cloud desktop app (if installed).
Navigate to the appropriate folder
Photoshop CS6 and earlier.
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe
Windows 7: \Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Adobe
Photoshop CC and CC 2014
Windows 7 and 8: \Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC or CC 2014
3. Delete the TypeSupport folder (Photoshop CS6 and earlier) or the CT Font Cache folder (Photoshop CC and CC 2014), and empty the trash.

Thanks for your reply but since the users work on the terminal server via remote dektop the only data sent through the network is a "Picture" of what is happening on the server. All the operations are handled on and by the server and nothing is executed on the users local machine. Also all files are stored on the server therefore the load on the network is minimum.
We are not the first in the World to run this setup and i know that this is possible to do since i've read about others running PS like this.

DS XI 3.0 on Terminal Server

We setup DS XI 3.0 on a Windows 2003 Terminal Server. 6 developers are now using the designer tool. For each of them a MySQL Database has been setup and local repositories were created.
One problem occurs: when one developer opens the Designer he always sees the repository information that was last used from ANY of them. Is there any way to solve this issue?

As discussed in this forum recently, Designer is not supported for use by multiple concurrent users via Terminal Services -- the application was never designed to support this. The application was designed to support Citrix, though. Please install the Designer tool on individual Windows installations for each of your users.

Can't install LabVIEW Run-Time Engine 6.1 on Windows Terminal Server
With my system admin, we tried to install the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine 6.1 on our Windows Terminal Server NT4. And we get an error all the time:
-install using the plugin
-install using LVRTE.exe
-install after rebooting the server
But I remember that we could install the Run-Time Engine 6.0 on another Windows Terminal Server NT4.
Is there any compatibility issues with the new Run-Time Engine 6.1 ??

What is the error that you get when trying to install the run-time engine?
Are you installing it from the LabVIEW CD, or did you download it from the web site?
To further troubleshoot this problem, it would be best if you send us an email to [email protected] and send the above information.
Also, try running the installer from the command prompt window, and use the following syntax:
setup.exe/l*v
This will save the error log to the file you specify. Send us also this file to help us troubleshoot.

SCCM App-V 5 packages to terminal server/Windows 7/Windows 10 design

I would appreciate your input on a design question on App-V 5 on SCCM 2012 R2.
Where we are:
We have Terminal Servers running with App-V 4.6 Clients for some years. The users on these Terminal Servers could only receive the App-v 4.6 packages (since the terminal server only had the App-V client)
Some time ago we started the rollout of App-V 5.0 packages to Terminal servers via SCCM 2012 R2.
In parallel we rolled out some App-V 5.0 clients to Windows 7 machines.
What’s happening:
Users get App-V package meant for TS (licensed applications which should not end on clients) and they should not
What we want:
deploy App-V packages (via SCCM) to W7 computers only, later we will deploy to users but for now our administration system doesn’t cover that
select which App-V packages to deploy to Windows 10 (when it’s there)
select which App-V packages to deploy to terminal servers (WKX)
uninstall of users/computers not in collections anymore

TTo achieve this we would create different deployment types of an App-v package with each a prereq “W7, Windows 10, Windows terminal services”. Then also we would create an uninstall mechanism (like this http://blogs.technet.com/b/configmgrdogs/archive/2014/11/03/managing-app-v-deployments-in-configmgr-2012.aspx)
Guess that would work, but wonder if you would see any flaws/issues
in/with this setup?

Update: then also I wonder the supersedence within the application (with different deployment types), f.e. 7-Zip on terminal servers should be replaced but not for Windows 7. Would that work?Uninstall is a bit of a concern too indeed.
What I would do is
f.e. 7-Zip Application-INSTALL, Deployment Types:
*W7-Install prereq W7
*WKX-Install prereq WK8R2, WK12R2
=> Deploy to Group "App-V-7-Zip", which has computers as well as user groups
7-Zip Application-UNINSTALL, Deployment Types:
*W7-Uninstall prereq W7
*WKX-Uninstall prereq WK8R2, WK12R2
=> Deploy to Group "App-V-UNINSTALL" which has all App-V groups (such as "App-V-7-Zip")
That's making sence, doesn't it?
Note: "It's probably a smart idea to not trigger an uninstall on a terminal server in every occasion." Why is that? Applications should be removed when f.e. groups are not part of the App-V-7-Zip.

Office 2007 + Custom template (dot/dotm files) on terminal server -- issues
We are trying to transition to a terminal server + thin-client setup.
The TS runs Server 2008 R2, and the Office version is 2007 (for compatibility reasons -- we have a lot of macros etc that won't run with Office 2010).
The normal.dotm for Office, Excel & Word are customised in order to insert custom macros, font styling etc. A batch file runs on logon, copying the custom normal.dotm files from a network share to the local computer's C: drive in a folder called "Templates".
So it'd copy the data from "\\SERVER1\share\normal.dotm" to "C:\templates\" on the machine.
Then, a GPO would re-direct the location for the normal.dotm file from the default location to the new location (i.e. C:\Templates\) from above. This allowed updating of custom macros etc to all computers on the net. It was messy, but it worked.
Now that we're wanting to transition to terminal server, we're having an issue where the script still works, however when closing Outlook / Excel / Word, users are receiving a message stating "The file normal.dotm is in use".
I'm guessing what's happening is, the first person to log on to the Terminal Server and launch their instance of Outlook/Word/Excel is getting an exclusive handle to this file; And subsequently launched instances get this error.
There is nothing _wrong_ with the system per se -- everything works, however every time an Office app is closed, the user gets the annoying message.
What is the correct solution to this? Is there a cleaner way to deploy macros/styling settings rather than modifying normal.dotm? Another solution I can think of is to create a copy of the templates/normal.dotm for every single user in their %AppData% folder
and tell Office to use the %AppData% copy -- but this would mean as many copies of the templates as there are users which doesn't seem like a very clean solution.
I'm open to suggestions and insights on the cleanest and most efficient way to solve this problem.Hi
update to this issue from my side:
We opened a Support call for this issue and got it solved.
The SQL script to recreate a fresh Enterprise Global (eglobal.SQL) does not exist for Project Server 2013 currently. But the support created one for us. So if someone has this issue, contact Microsoft Support, they will provide you the script.

Our current setup is as follows :-
Active Driectory is in Windows Server 2003.
Citrix Xenapp version 5.6 with all Xenapp servers in Windows Server 2003
Now we are upgrading our Citrix farm to 6.5 and all Xen app servers into Windows Server 2008R2.
We did the configuration and testing; everything works fine except the terminal server is not configured which gives the pop always for the expiry date.
We do have license for 2012 terminal server which is not possible to downgrade for some reason and managent need to install new Windows Server 2012 for terminal server and activte the licenses.
My question is :-
1 Whether Windows Server 2008 R2 will get RDS cal license from Windows Server 2012 terminal server (RDS CAL license is of windows server 2012).
2. What is the role and features I need to activate in Server 2012 in order to use for Citrix 6.5 (only applicable fetaure for getting the RDS cal license.)
3. Whether I can add this 2012 server into domain. Is it possible to add 2012 server into Windows Server 2003 AD.

I got exactly the right answers I am lookoing for ..
I successfully activated the terminal service on the newly created Windows 2012 Server and installed the retail license pack we had of 50+50+25 keys . It later shows the 125 keys successfully applied.
when I tried to link the Xenapp (Windows Server2008R2) to the license server, it first gives me error that session host service role is not installed on the ternial server. So I installed that role also in the terminal server.
But now its anothee error as below.
RDS Cals are not available for this Remote Desktop Session host server, and licensing Diagnostic has identified licensing problems for the RD session host server.
1. Is it wrong I did by installing session host server role into the terminal server (but really it gave me error like 'session host server role is not running on the license server' when I tried to link the license server).
2. Is it the problem that Windows Server 2008 R2 will not get license from 2012 RDS CAL license.
3. whether Clearing house will take time to update the license.
Your reply is highly appreciated. I need to know whether any other way I can link the Windows Server 2008 R2 Servers (Xenapp) to the license server. -

Adena Health SystemUnderlying the Mac OS is unix. By default when a file or folder is created, it is owned by that user. Other users don't have read/write permissions.
I suggest reading a bit about unix permissions work.
Unix assigns permissions for 3 categories for each file and folder. Self, group, and other (think of other like the permissions you would want a complete stranger to have).
If all your users are members of the same group, you can use unix permissions to allow anyone in the group to have r/w permissions. You'd first need to define a group, and then assign all the users to that group.
Lastly, you'd want to associate all the existing files you already have to that group. -
RDP to a Terminal Server via TTPT not working through routers.
I am having problems using RDP to a terminal server through a user home router and DSL connection.
User has a Linksys WRT5G v3 (Firmware 4.21.1) connected to a Cisco 678 DSL Modem.
If I direct connect the home computer to the Cisco DSL Modem everything works fine. When I try to go through the Linksys, I can get the PPTP authenticated but the RDP client just times out.
It would seem like this is a port forwarding issue, but I have tried to use the port forwarding to the IP address of the home computer(statically assigned) by forwarding ports 47, 1723 for the PPTP and port 3389 for RDP.
I have seen the same issue on my home Broadband cable setup with a NetGear Router. Having spent over an hour with the NetGear technical support without resolution. I swapped in a old Linksys Wireless Router BEFW11S4 v4 (firmware 1.52.02) and it fixed the issue.
What is the issue with some home routers letting RDP out? Is there a known model that it will work on?I believe I have found what my issue is. The older Linksys BEFW11S4 model has a “hard coded” DHCP Server Start IP Address range of 192.168.0.X you can only change the last octet. The newer Linksys WRT5G and WRT54Gs have a “hard coded” DHCP Server Start IP Address range of 192.168.1.X.
Apparently this is their “dumb downed” solution for home routers. They do not allow you to select a different subnet to hand out with DHCP but interestingly they do allow you to fully configure the LAN IP address.
How this affected me is that my target server/network uses the same 192.168.1.X addressing scheme.
I was able to use the newer router by configuring the LAN address to like 192.168.0.200 and turning off the DHCP server. Then I assigned a static IP address to the computer in the home network to something like 192.168.0.250. Then I could successfully use PPTP and RDP to connect to a terminal server.
