4.1 upgrade - signal reception loss, crashing/reboot, sudden battery % drop

Hello,
Wondering if anybody can help me with these issues. I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to OS 4.1 three days ago. Having some major problems.
The day after I upgraded to 4.1, my iPhone 3GS could not get a signal at all; it just stated "No Service" in areas I knew there was AT&T service. I tried removing and re-installing the SIM card, to no avail. I know this is not an issue with AT&T because when I placed my SIM card into my old RAZR V3, I could get a signal immediately, in the same location. After about 8 hours, around 4PM, my iPhone 3GS finally locked on to the AT&T network.
The next day, I was receiving a phone call and did not have any hands free to answer it. The caller left a voicemail and I attempted to "slide to unlock" the phone to listen to the voicemail. This is when I realized that the iPhone had frozen and crashed. It was not responding to any button or screen inputs, and I didn't know how to reset it. Finally after about 5 minutes, it turned itself off and rebooted itself.
Last night I left the phone at 51% battery charge, turned on Airplane Mode, put the iPhone to sleep, and went to sleep myself. Today, I woke up after about 9 hours of sleep. My iPhone had 5% charge left and was still in Airplane Mode. I was stupefied. How could the iPhone possibly drain from 51% to 5% over 9 hours in Airplane Mode, when it couldn't possibly have been receiving or transmitting any data?
Please help!
Myles

I am NOT SELLING the phone on eBay.
Three weeks ago I “upgraded” my old Samsung Sway to a new Samsung Intensity III through VZW and paid $30.00 upgrade fee.
In three weeks I went through three phones – all with problems. Samsung Intensity III is a junk.
Today I resolved my issue with VZW. They refunded $30.00 upgrade fee, and I purchased Samsung Sway on eBay.

  • MBA 2013 screen crash and suddenly battery drains

Hello, I bought MacBook Air November 2013 in India. I am facing the same problem in my MBA after 6-7 days of buying date. Since it is my first device from Apple so I am following all instructions by the reseller and service center persons.
First I spoke to the reseller, he suggested me sometimes due to third party apps it may happen. When it happened again then he suggested me to go to service center. In between that I joined the discussion on Apple support community and started to get the comments about this issue. Then I chatted online with apple persons they instructed me to check settings of SMC and PRAM and suggested to go to service center. Then after, 3 times I have taken my MBA to service center:
1st time: they changed the settings in it and gave back to me by saying to observe the problem.
I observed it for 2 days and problem occurred. I informed to service center.
2nd time: they kept it for 4 days with them to observe and gave it back by saying that we have fresh installed the Mac OS10.9 since this issue was due to I have updated the Mac OS from 10.9 to 10.9.1
Within 4-5 days it happened again with one more problem of showing battery drain significantly by spot light. I continued to observe these issues for few more occurrences. In between that again I chatted with apple person and discussed both the issues.... amazing... again he told me the same settings as previously and observe.
3rd time: I took it to service center and told compete issue about the discussion with apple persons too. They kept it for two days and simply said that we have to chat with Apple technicians then only we say something. They chatted with Apple technicians and suggested me to keep the machine as it is till the Apple people update the firmware… When I asked… How much time it will take…? They said, “Do not know”!
Interesting point is that in front of service center person I showed this issue how screen crashes and how the battery drains happening and showing energy used significantly by spotlight. Even then those persons told me to wait for firmware update by Apple.
After take from service center, one more thing is happening with my MBA if I put my finger in front of webcam brightness of display goes dim. I do not know, how the service center persons are dealing?
When I asked to replace it or upgrade it to another machine then they simply raise their hand and we can do nothing for this. And told you have to speak with Apple persons
Now what to do? I am helpless…!!!

After take from service center, one more thing is happening with my MBA if I put my finger in front of webcam brightness of display goes dim. I do not know, how the service center persons are dealing?
Thats 100% normal, thats auto-dim as it senses the light. All of them do that.
As for the rest, your Air is in for service, this is a users board, contact Apple Inc. about any issues regarding your service calls.

  • 2.1 Update - Reception loss - never regains until reboot

Scenario is only after 2.1, used 2.0.1, and 2.0.2 before:
Full bars in the apartment, I get into the elevator, reception loss (rather normal for iPhone on all software versions), get out of the elevator, 5 minutes later still NO SERVICE. I go for Airplane mode on -> airplane mode off. Then it's "Searching" for 3 or 4 minutes before I restart. Obviously not jailbroken or pwned.
Funny thing is that if I leave it locked where it doesn't have reception and I get it out after it has no problem. The front-end doesn't realize the back-end lost reception?
Has anyone had similar experiences since 2.1?

    Agreed.
Update went fine and doesn't appear to have lost any data. A couple of pointers I picked up from earlier updaters is having to soft reset after completion to get 3G active again and for those with Outlook synced, I had to turn off and on mail, calendar, and contacts to re-sync.

  • IPhone lock-up, crash & rebooting issues?

Hi, All – I have the original iPhone with 2.0 software. Since the initial install and even after doing a restore on it, the phone has been crashing and rebooting intermittently. I am using AT&T service, and I have never attempted to unlock the phone or run arbitrary code on it, so these issues are baffling to me. Below is a brief list of what I’ve encountered. Again, the iPhone is crashing and rebooting, not the apps:
Press the “Home” button = intermittent crash, then reboot (might happen back to back, or as infrequently as 6 hours – no rhyme or reason)
Press the “Power” button = (same result as above)
Phone locked up when receiving a call, lit up & identified the caller, no ring or vibration then it rebooted. This has happened twice.
Phone locked up when receiving a text message. Noticed it as I heard an odd tone from my phone for a split second, then it crashed and rebooted and showed a text message on the home screen when it finished rebooting.
Also, I have had other problems where the phone didn’t crash or reboot – it just didn’t perform properly:
When receiving a call – display does not light; phone does not ring or buzz. Voicemail received from caller though call not noted in received calls list. Also, I have had a greater number of “Call Failed” problems, even with full cell signal in Denver, CO. This may be AT&T’s fault, but it seems fine after I shut down and restart the phone.
In general, my iPhone with 2.0 software seems a bit more laggy. Screen rotation from portrait to landscape isn’t as smooth and opening the SMS app seems to have a consistent 2-second delay regardless of if I have cleared out my text message logs or not.
Also, when I reboot the phone, more often than not it starts off at the “slide to unlock” screen instead of the home screen.
Regarding location services – My gripe is that it can’t be told to either:
    Stay on all the time
    Shut off all the time
Activate when needed, then shut off – just like in 1.1.4.
Now when I use an application that I allow to use location services, I have to manually go and shut location services off again or my battery life will suffer.
I have now removed all of the new applications from the phone, and am still experiencing crash/reboot problems. My guess is my phone is damaged somehow or the software I downloaded was somehow flawed during downloading or installation.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really like this phone, but I can't bring myself to buy the new 3G if I can't be certain I wouldn't have the same problems
    Thank you,
    Lynn

I have experienced this problem as well and it is intermittent to say the least. I have two other friends that have an i-phone as well, and when the phone crashed it stored a picture of the screen in the photo library of the phone. I thought that was a little odd as well. I have another friend that has not updated to 2.0 yet and does not seem to be having any problems at all. I would venture to guess that there is a problem with the update and that an update will be out sometime to correct the problem. If anyone knows of a way to correct the problem please post a fix for us.

  • My iphone 5 has a bad signal reception LTE turned off any suggestions

I purchased my Iphone 5 last November 2012 by Cosmote Greek network provider.
I am using an iphone 3GS as well and I can compare the strength of the signal reception all time.
Usually the 3GS has 3 signal bars more than the Iphone 5 which many times goes with no signal. The LTE is turned off as well any suggestions?
    Thanks

I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5338609?start=120&tstart=0
If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue.  To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new.  This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings.  Then test it out for a day or two.  If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced.  If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself:  http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription
If your iPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue.  This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself.  What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.
But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device:  http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html
Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below:  "IPSW with iTunes"
    And your done.
    Problem solved.
I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that no one really seemed to figure out a solution for.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can I boost ipad3's antenna signal reception?

My Wifi router name don't appear in wifi networks list when I'm in the bedroom, where as all other devises like laptop, Blackberry can see the wifi router signal very well. If I keep my ipad3 very near to the wifi router it works well.
The distance between wifi router and bedroom is not even 10 meters
How can I boost ipad's antenna signal reception to see my wifi router?
I already reset network settings and toggles airplane mode. Upgraded ios to the lastest version.

    There's no hardware solution.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Out of curiosity, do you have 2 step verification enabled?  It was recently extended to include iMessage & FaceTime & I'm wondering if it might be causing some of the issues that some users are experiencing.

We have had Verizon Wireless service since 2007. We have 6 lines on our account. Unfortunately in 2012 when I (903.647.0073) upgraded from the iPhone4s to the iPhone 5 I started having reception problems. I started having dropped calls in my home. I had to go outside to get reception without dropped calls. I was told that because of metal in my home I would have to purchase a Network Extender for $250. And we HAVE not metal in our home. AND our other lines all work fine. I felt this was ridiculous. We already pay $350+/month for service and I should NOT have to purchase additional equipment for a service that I already pay for. The manager of our local store at the time gave us at no cost a Samsung Network Extender. It worked beautifully until about a month ago. I went to our local Verizon store and was told that I would have to purchase an extender. THIS is RIDICULOUS. We have been loyal customers for over 7 years and have been very satisfied with our service. Unless this issue can be resolved without purchasing an extender we will be switching our service as our lines come up for renewal. I regret this as we have been very happy with our service. But we should NOT have to purchase anything extra for one line that will not get good reception. Again, we pay $350+/ month for a service that does not work properly, simply RIDICULOUS! Currently the "sys" light flashes red (slow) and the GPS light remains red. Please help this very frustrated customer.

Regardless with what carrier your with you might have the same issue, My recommendation would be to get a router that will help you with viewing live traffic and keep a tally of your usage and any device connected to your internet connection.  You can go with the peplink balance 20 and be able to look at your traffic by the hour, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.  Look for trends, see what computers or devices are doing what I attached a screen shot so you can see an example of mine.  You can purchase the router at 3gstore

  • How should I debug a PVM that is crashing & rebooting too fast ?

I have a newly created oel4u6 PVM that appears to be starting but then crashing & rebooting too fast and I don't know how to best debug it. The vm is a P2V'ed oel4u6 HP Blade that successfully boots as a HVM but I can't seem to get it to fully start as a PVM (I have several clones that I am working with to contrast/compare).
I can't seem to get the console to start fast enough to show me anything useful as the crash is within seconds.
I likely can flip the VM back to HVMPV mode or HVM and boot to the original kernel but if I boot to another kernel I am not sure what files in the VM (if any) may give any insight on the failed starts/crashed.*
Anyone have any ideas/recommendations on how to debug this?*

  • MacBook Pro keeps Crashing/Rebooting when Typing

Ever since I installed Mavericks my MacBook Pro keeps crashing/rebooting.  It's an early 2012 model machine, and until now has given me no problems at all (except for some odd SafariDAVClient thing that keeps hogging my  memory and I have to force close periodically).
The problem is when I am typing a lot (e-mail, or a document) the computer will suddenly freeze momentarilly, then reboot giving me the grey screen with several different languages indicating there was a crash and I need to press any key to continue.  I have tried doing a clean re-install of OSX as one discussion thread here suggested to no avail.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • Crashes/reboots/restarts while on sleep

This thread is exclusive to people who have spontaneous crashes/reboots/restarts while their Mac is in sleep. (this is usually connected to having a USB external hard drive plugged in the computer while on sleep)
In simple words, you are experiencing this problem:
    1) You put your Mac to sleep
    2) You return to it after some time and you find it on.
    3) On screen you find this error message "Your computer restarted because of a problem." or similar, and in the report of the error message the Event is "Sleep Wake Failure" or similar.
If your Mac does not wake from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.
If your Mac is experiencing black screens and freezes while waking up from sleep this is NOT the thread for you, please don’t write here.
This thread is a continuation to the “New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes” thread.
I’m trying to better understand this problem. Allow me to ask you some questions. After you answer the first 5 question, feel free to write freely in this thread. (as longs as you are pertinent to this issue)
Please answer this questions carefully. If we get enough people to answer, I will personally slap this thread on the face of every Apple employee I can find, so they will have to stop saying  "we never heard of this issue" and we can get a quick fix or a quick replacement if this is indeed an hardware issue.
PLEASE ANWSER THIS QUESTIONS BEFORE WRITING IN THIS THREAD FOR THE FIRST TIME
I suggest you copy and paste the questions below in your reply, and replace the text ANSWER with your answer.

    1. Which Mac do you have? (If you have this issue with multiple machines, list them here)
Macbook Pro Retina late 2013. 512Gb SSD, 16Gb RAM, 2.3Ghz core i7 with discrete GPU.
    2. When did the problem start? If you had Mountain Lion installed on this machine, did the problem start when you updated to Mavericks?
I purchased a 4TB WD MyBook and split it into two partitions with one of them being used for Time Machine. After that, I received the reboots during sleep.
The computer came preinstalled with Mavericks.
    3. Did you have your Mac replaced from Apple because of this issue? If yes, does the new machine still have the problem?
No, I haven't had it replaced. I contacted Apple 4 days after the problem started. I had turned off PowerNap, but still had the problem. Apples asked me to disable Wake for Wi-Fi Network Access, and since doing that the problem has disappeared.
    4. Does your machine crash/reboot while on sleep only if you have an external hard drive connected?
Yes (before I turned off PowerNap and Wake for Wi-Fi)
    5. Does your machine crash/reboot even if you uncheck "Enable Power Nap" in Preferences, Energy Saver? (before answering this, check that you have updated OS X to 10.9.1 and that you have unchecked Power Nap in both the Battery and Power Adapter tabs in Energy Saver)
I have to have both PowerNap and Wake for WiFi disabled. If either is checked, the computer reboots. I've confirmed this with both 10.9 and 10.9.1.
    OPTIONAL QUESTIONS
    6. Do you have an external hard drive connected via USB? If yes, write the manufacturer name and model name of the drive. (example: Western Digital My Book)
Yes. Western Digital My Book 4TB. Split into 2 partitions.
    7. Do you have a network connected drive? (like Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme, or a NAS)
    No.
    8. Do you have Time Machine Enabled?
    Yes.
    9. Do you have Crashplan installed?
    No.
    10. How much time does it usually take for the first crash/reboot to happen, after you put the computer on sleep?
4 hours. Checking the console log, my computer wakes itself at 2 hours for Time Machine (even if PowerNap is turned off, which is why Wake for Wi-Fi needed to be disabled, even the drive wasn't connected over the network, which really makes no sense) and then on the second wake, it has the Sleep Wake failure. Then it proceeds to reboot every 2 hours after when it wakes for Time Machine.
    11. If you have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, do you have discrete graphics in it? (In other words: do you have an NVIDIA GPU? If you don't know this, go into the menu bar, click the apple icon, click About This Mac, Click More Info, in Graphics you should find written “NVIDIA GeForce”.)
    Yes.

  • N8 poor signal reception and other hardware issues...

    I have always been a Nokia fan . I started with Nokia 6600, then N70, then N82 and now a Nokia N8.
However, I am facing the worst experience with N8 reception issues.
The problems faced are as under :
    1) Poor Signal Reception Issues - Signal strength is weak and is constantly fluctuating compared to other Nokia Phones. At my workplace, if Nokia N82 displays 5 bars, N8 would display only 1 or 2 bars.
    2) Phone freezes many times. Whenever an Alarm is enabled, phone freezed much more.
    3) Purple Tint in the display. Nokia Service Centre says that its normal but according to me, they are just ignoring this issue.
    4) Vibration is weak : I often do not realize when the phone is vibrating in my pocket !!
Upcoming Symbian Anna will just improve the user interface but will not be able to solve these hardware issues.
If Nokia plans a hardware update facility for N8 users wherein they can fix the signal reception issues and increase the RAM to 1 GB atleast, I would retain this phone for few years.
But, now, I intend to switch to Samsung Galaxy S II.

I am agree with poor signal issue with nokia N8. I have two cell with one is N8 and other one is N26 with nearly 4.5 year old but at same place Nokia N8 showing very poor quality of network signal compared to N26. So for same network provider with two different cell with same manufacture how can drastic different that is also investing nearly RS.22000!
    Please resolve the issue ASAP.

  • Latent OS Bugs in iPad OS 3.2?  - Crash/Reboot with Search & Photo Scroll

I now have an issue with 'Search iPad' causing a crash & reboot on my ipad. It will also crash/reboot when scrolling through my Photos. What I have found is that once you install somewhere between 850-900 Apps that this starts failing and is first letter search term sensitive. (i.e. So far I found the key first letter to search which seems to provoke the crash is: F, P, S. Other search terms starting with other letters may work.) The Photo Scroll crash/reboot I have not tried to debug yet but I only have 383 photos loaded right now.
Bottom line it looks like the same indexing bug in the iPhone OS 3.1.2 is also latent in in the iPad OS 3.2(7B367). Hopefully this, as well as the wifi & intermittent video playback crash problem will be fixed soon.
Is there a beta test code patch/fix for this?

    Hey, all -
Having the same problem, but there's a workaround. I know everybody wants an official fix, but you also probably want to see your photos in the meantime regardless.
Note that I don't know what to do about the problem with searching when you have 800+ apps installed. I didn't even think you could install that many. As far as I know, then, this only works for Photos (better than nothing, right?).
Here's what you do - it's actually really simple...
    1. Instead of scrolling down through your photos, select a photo - any photo - without scrolling.
    2. When the photo is loaded, look at the bottom of the screen. There should be what looks Ike a series of little boxes. These little boxes are your friend.
    3. Touch and drag along the strip of boxes. You'll notice that they're actually the universe's smallest thumbnails, and that they expand when you touch and drag (not unlike the OS X dock when you mouse over icons and they "magnify").
    4. Scroll along until you're getting to the photos you want to see. Then just let go. The Photo app will take you to that photo. Even if it's a photo you couldn't reach by scrolling down in the traditional fashion, you'll still be able to get to it.
    5. If you want to look at other "nearby" photos, you can use that thumbnail strip along the bottom again, OR you can just tap the back button to return to the album. Photos will return to the usual thumbnail view (the one that's crashing for some of us), but it will drop you off in the vicinity of the photo you just looked at. For example, if you followed the steps above and dragged your finger all the way to the right to load the last photo in your album, then the back button will return you to the normal thumbnail view, but you'll be looking at the last page of photos in your album.
I hope that makes sense. If it doesn't, then just try the first four steps. It'll make sense to you after that.
I've been able to view all my photos since learning this little trick.
I've been meaning to plug my iPad in and use the app development tools to look at diagnostic information that'd help me understand why it's crashing. If I get around to it, I'll come back and post what I find. My guess is that, if you have enough photos, and if you're scrolling fast enough, the Photos app is using a lot of resources to load thumbnails without unloading the ones that have already scrolled off the screen. In other words, I think that quickly scrolling through a large library leads to the Photos app using too much memory, forcing a reboot (apps are supposed to be designed to respond to system warnings about low memory - if they don't respond to the warnings and continue to use up system resources, the system will sometimes reboot itself).
    Hope this helps
