60p conformed to 24p timeline - reverse bug?

If I take 60p footage and conform to 24p timeline (40% smooth slo-mo), then copy the clip and reverse it -- many frames are dropped and the reversed clip is very choppy.
Help?

I can confirm this bug. It has nothing to do with H.264 or anything else that suggests frames can't be rendered in time (CPU/GPU/HD). It's happenning in a 25p timeline for me so it's no specific to 24p.
The problem is for some reason FCPX is processing the reverse and time-remap in the wrong order.
I't reversing first, and this temporary step is producing footage in the framerate of the timeline and discarding frames just like it would if the 60p footage were played back in the timeline without conforming.
Then the slow down happens on the new 24p footage which is causing repeat frames.
WORKAROUND!
Good thing is we can force FCPX to process them in the right order by using compund clips. Convert to compound clip and put the slow-down on the clip inside the compound clip and then put the reverse on the compound clip in the timeline. Boom!
Only thing the doesn't make sense is why others report it works properly with reverse-slowed clips as it never works for me no matter what I do.

  • DVCPro HD 60P in a 24P timeline (From HPX 500 /  P2card)

    I've been playing with the new DVCProHD features in CS3.1, and I am wondering if there is a way to actually bring full 60P footage in a 24P timeline to slow it down.
    From what I read in the project settings, it doesn't seem possible. Although it reads 59.94 in the project manager, when its duration is increased, it just starts interpolating just as 24P footage (Sure looks better than it did in PP2, but definitely not 60P :-). In a 60P timeline, that issue is obviously not there.
    I know Panasonic has been offering a frame rate converter for FCP to resolve that exact issue. Are we stuck until a Windows version is out (if ever)? Does anyone have a work around?
    I also noticed that we can't export a 720/60P DVCPro sequence to 24P in WMV HD and expect good results? I tried unconstrained at 20 Megs/s average with not luck...

    Thanks Marcus. Do I then have to use Raylight render settings for the entire timeline, or will Premiere let me render that particular clip to the native DVCPro Codec. I understand that you created your own version of DVCPro, is that correct?

  • HVX 24p timeline and 60p

    Simply, I'm editing a documentary and we're shooting in 720p 24PN with the HVX. I setup my timeline accordingly, and despite my coaching them, the two guys who hired me still come back with 720 60p footage from time to time.
    By default, when I drop the 60p footage into the timeline, it's black. When rendered, it's choppy.
    I know there is an calculative explanation for this but the numbers are confusing me - I'm looking for the best way to take that 60p footage into the 24p timeline and have it play at normal speed.
    Also, an aside that I thought of. When I'm ready to actually use 720 60p for slow motion, how do I achieve this in a 24p timeline? I've found a few explanations after a brief search and apologize if it should have been more apparent to me, but I'm still not quite grasping it.
    This is my first foray into P2 and MXF. I am using Raylight from DVFilm as well, so my clips are referenced as you may know, and not imported traditionally through final cut.

    It will look a little choppy...in comparison to the actual 24p footage. You can try the Standards Converter from www.nattress.com and see if that does a better job. Demo is available.
    As for the Slow Motion, you need to use the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter tool in the TOOLS menu. HOWEVER, you need to have actual quicktime files I think...not sure if this will work with Raylight. You can try. I do know that the end result will be a quictime file.

    I accidentally batch captured some HD 24FPS footage from a Varicam at 60FPS over firewire via the panasonic HD1200A deck using the DVCPRO HD CODEC. Final Cut normally removes the extra frames upon capture to make it 24fps. But for troubleshooting purposes (it kept aborting capture) I ended up capturing the footage without the frame removal pulldown feature enabled.
    To fix this, I mistakenly tried the Cinema Tools conform feature to "conform" the footage to 24fps. This didn't remove the pulldown, but rather just slowed everything down, esentially stretching out time, making my audio tracks unusable. Unfortunately, there seems no way to conform the footage back to 60fps because the conform window only allows 24 and 30fps conversions. I need a 60fps conform technique. Is there a way to fix the footage?

    Since recapturing isn't really an option because the deck was a one-time rental, I tried a slightly lossy technique, but the results were acceptable to me. Creating an image sequence was a good idea, but I wanted to preserve my audio track simulateously.
    Here's what worked for me:
    I started by conforming again in cinema tools to 30 fps. This gave me a simple even denominator of 60P. I then added each of these footage files to a 60P DVCPRO HD sequence. I then adjusted the speed of the clips in the timeline 200% and turned off frame blending. I then exported (recompressed) the footage to new flattened clips. I then took the conformed, messed up files offline and reconnected to the new clips, thereby preserving my loging notes, etc.
    It was time consuming but worked. The audio is 48K again and the playback is 60P.
    Frankly, I made a mistake that will become more common as the HD userbase expands. Most people don't understand that the Varicam 24P is actually recorded at 60P. I hope Apple updates Cinema Tools to conform back to 60P before more people make my mistake.

  • How should I incorporate 60p clips into 24p multicam clips?

    I shot a music video recently on a 7D. I have three variety of clips:
    24p
    24p shot to slow playback, which needs to be sped up to 132% for sync
    60p that needs to be conformed
    How should I incorporate these clips into 24p multicam clips. Do I do all the conforming/speed changes in the multicam timeline after making the clip or is there a way to do it prior in the event browser and be able to take advantage of FCPX's syncing?

    I'm having difficulty following your description. You shot with one camera and you want  to make a multiclip…so should  I asume you had three separate takes of a performance? And the audio? Is it recorded music that you want the talent lip-syncing to? Or something else?

    With a typical multi-cam shoot, FCP does a great job of syncing different formats, including multiple frame rates. Those usually are synced by matching (automatically) the waveforms of the reference audio in the various cameras and any other sound sources. But yours does not sound like a typical shoot.

  • HVX200- 720/60P in 23.97 timeline... ramp problems.

    I am having difficulty trying to modify the speed of my timelapse shots (1F per 1sec) that were taken in the 720/60P mode in a 23.97 timeline. The clips play fine (after rendering) when I do not modify the speed.
    Basically most of the project is being shot in the 720/24PN mode but I did a few timelapses with the 720/60P mode that I wanted to ramp up, but when I put it in the timeline, modified the speed and rendered it the clip goes well then stops about 3/4 of the way through.
    Is there a specific modify speed % for this situation? Would I be better off trying to do the timelapse at 720/30P for this specific timeline?
    Understanding that I can not use the intervalometer function (1 frame per 1 second) in 24PN or 24P.

    To avoid glitches with different modes in the same project, I edit the section with the odd mode (your 720/60P) and then export it as a separate clip into the mode you want to use in your timeline (your 720/24P). It cuts down on your editing options later, but it also cuts down on hassles especially when exporting the final file.

  • Source Sequence to Timeline Editing Bugs?

    Hi. I'm new to PP and I've run into a couple of issues when editing from a sequence loaded into the source viewer. (i.e KEM roll style editing) I'm using 7.0.1
    First problem - with the timeline set to Insert or Overwrite sequences as nests everything works fine (although i don't really see the purpose of working this way). Mostly you would want to "Insert or Overwrite as individual clips", but when i overwrite a clip the timeline ignores my in and out points which effectively means you can't do a three point edit. There's another strange bug that when you Insert the playhead jumps way off screen instead of staying at the end of the inserted clip.
    Second problem - "Replace with clip from Source Monitor" and "Replace with clip from Source Monitor, Match Frame" only replaces with the nested clip, is there no way to replace with the original clip? BTW, would be great if you could map a keyboard shortcut for this command as well?

  • Photoshop CC: Layer Merging Behavior with Timeline Animations (Bug?)

    Hello,
    we're working a lot with the Photoshop timeline in our company. After upgrading to Photoshop CC we encountered a behavior that was different with CS6.
    Picture a file with a timeline animation consisting for example of 8 frames, with 8 layers, each layer's visibility exposed on a single frame (layer 1 exposed in frame 1, layer 2 exposed in frame 2 etc) and all other layer not visible.
    In Photoshop CS6, if I were to create a new layer for example in frame 4 of my timeline above layer 4 (which is the only visible layer in this frame) and merged it back down onto layer 4 (by selecting it and pressing the shortcut CTRL+E), the resulting layer inherited all the exposure settings of layer 4, but did contain the merged visual content of layer 4 and the previously new layer above it. This is what I want.
    Now in Photoshop CC, when doing the very same action, the layers are merged and keep the naming of layer 4, however the visibility flag is not inherited properly. The resulting layer is exposed (visible) on all frames in the timeline, whereas it actually should only be exposed in frame 4.
    Also note that the timeline option "New layers visible in all frames" is deactivated. So even if Photoshop treated the merged layer as an actual new layer, it shouldn't expose it's visibility in all other frames.
    The only workaround I've found so far is enabling "unify layer visibility", hiding the layer, then disabling "unify layer visibility" again. This is annoying however, and the entire new behavior seems like a bug to me. Can any of the developers comment on this? Thank you.

    My only solution so far is to avoid using CC and sticking with CS6.  Thanks Adobe for not letting me enjoy the other great features of the PS version you seem to care about updating and improving.  Since PS is the main reason I even subscribed to creative cloud, it would be nice to at least know this problem is being resolved in the future.

  • Duplicating layer timeline playhead bug

    Hi,
    I'm using Photoshop CC animation feature with the timeline (terrific feature btw), and I have a bug report... didn't find anywhere to resolve it, so I'm reporting it here :
    While working on the timeline, if my play head is not on the right time (active layer is not visible in the timeline (cf. screen capture)),
    and if I try to duplicate the active layer from the layer palette, Photoshop gives me a program error modal window, and doesn't give me any choice by clicking ok again and again in a loop, the error stays there, the only solution is to force quit Photoshop.... no saving possible !!

    I see what the problem is. The project start time is one hour. In legacy versions if you typed 100 it always went to one second, you didn't have to type in the one hour no minutes one second to move the playhead.

    ok, got this code of some good chap earlier on for reversing
    the timeline and it works.

    but I want to have the timeline stop at certain points and
    then use the buttons to carry on going left or right! ive put some
    "Stop();" on the points were i want the timeline to stop but when i
    test the movie it just bypasses the the stop script and carries on
    playing until the end of the timeline.
    any ideas?

    that's not great coding but it's patchable. i'm assuming your
    BackButton and ForwarButton are true buttons.

  • Gaps on faux 24p timeline

    I have a 24p project using material shot on a camera that gave 24P recorded actually at 29.97. This result is a timelime with clips that occassionally produce a sub-frame gap that results in a black dropout during playback. I can't just cut out that part-frame because the clip insert is is actually an AE processing of a portion of a longer clip that leads up to and contues after it. What do I do to ensure smooth continuity?

    Trouble is, do you mean 30i or 29.9, and drop frame or non-drop frame? (I'm presuming you mean drop frame, but not with full confidence.)  Maybe you could also elaborate on why your choice should work.

    1) For this camcorder, which one of your publications covers importing 1080p60 AND 1080i60 into iMovie, "Ins and Outs" or "Editing AVCHD" or both in order to achieve the highest quality iMovie output for Blu-Ray DVD burning? Asked another way, will this camcorder necessitate an update to those publications?
    2) Also, since the HDC-TM700 produces MP4 H.264 files (isn't that correct?), can't they be ingested directly by iMovie without using Quicktime to convert the files from AVCHD to MP4?

  • Can anyone else conform if this is a bug?

    Take a video clip and animate the clip - just move the position and set 2 keyframes. Then use the time remapping to slow it down and see if the key frames disappear from the position selection. It should still move, but the keyframes are no longer visable. If you do the time remapping first, you can set keyframes, but it won't animate.

    That all depends on WHICH of the Cloud programs you use... see below, and remember that the individual program links are the MINIMUMS
