A bash script to backup system only with modified files

Hi,
I've made a simple bash script to exam which files are modified and needed to be backed up.
It will use:
1. the hash in Pacman's database (/var/lib/pacman/local/<pkg_ver>/files
2. if no hash in the database, calculate it by our self from cache (/var/cache/pacman/pkg/<pkg_ver>.pkg.tar.gz
3. if no cache found, compare build date and last modified date
4. otherwise, this file better be backed up.
Currently it will only print which files are needed to be backed up, but no backup actually happens. (dry run)
And it is only in early development stage, please be careful.
USAGE:
<the script name> <where to backup files, a directory> <the files, or directories, separated by space, that are going to be examined>...
Here is the code.
#!/bin/bash
# usage:
# $1: file to backup
function do_backup() {
echo
function smart_bak() {
pkg=$(pacman -Qo "$1" 2>/dev/null)
if [ 1 -eq $? ] ; then
# No package owns $1 (locally created)
if [ "$1" != "${1%.pacsave}" ] ; then
echo "skip $1 (left by removed package)"
else
echo "backup $1 (local file)"
fi
else
pkg=${pkg#$1 is owned by }
# evaluate
# by hash
cur=$(md5sum $1)
cur=${cur%% *}
pkg_ver=${pkg/ /-}
org=$(grep "^${1:1}" "/var/lib/pacman/local/$pkg_ver/files")
org_hash=${org##* }
if [ "$org" != "$org_hash" ] ; then
# the org hash is in Pacman's database
if [ "$org_hash" = "$cur" ] ; then
echo "skip $1 (original config)"
else
echo "backup $1 (modified config)"
fi
else
# no hash
# find out hash myself?
ARCH=$(uname -m)
if [ -r "/var/cache/pacman/pkg/$pkg_ver-$ARCH.pkg.tar.gz" ] ; then
org=$(tar -Oxzf "/var/cache/pacman/pkg/$pkg_ver-$ARCH.pkg.tar.gz" "${1:1}" | md5sum -)
org_hash=${org%% *}
if [ "$cur" = "$org_hash" ] ; then
echo "skip $1 (original)"
else
echo "backup $1 (modified)"

# no cache, may be a AUR package
# fall back to built date?

tmp2=$(expr $mod "-" 60)
if [ "$date" -le "$tmp1" -a "$date" -ge "$tmp2" ] ; then
echo "skip $1 (the same date)"
else
echo "backup $1 (unknown)"
fi
fi
fi
fi
function smart_bak_dir() {
for i in $(ls -A "$1") ; do
tmp="${1%/}/$i"
if [ -f "$tmp" ] ; then
smart_bak "$tmp"
elif [ -d "$tmp" ] ; then
smart_bak_dir "$tmp"
else
echo "skip $tmp (not a regular file nor a directory)"
fi
done
# usage:
# $1: the directory to store this backup
# $2: directory to evalualte for backup
# function main()
# init

# check

Thanks for this script. Nice work.
Can we traverse the pacman.log backwards up and rollback each operation (including "installed" in this). Something like:
history=$(tail -n +$(grep -m 1 -n "$1" "$LOG" | cut -d ":" -f 1) "$LOG" | tac | grep -E "(upgraded|installed)" | cut -d " " -f 3-)

    Chester31,
    Thank you very much for sharing your file with us!  Now that we are able to reproduce the problem at our end, you may stop sharing the file on Acrobat.com.
    Do you know when this problem (for not being able to add new highlight/strikeout/underline) has started?  Did you update your iOS from 7.x to 8.0 recently?
    We will continue investigating the problem and let you know what we find.
    Thank you again for your help.

  • Bash script to trim all filenames with special characters recursively?

    Hi,
    I have a 30 GB directory full of data I recovered from a friend's laptop after her Windows XP crashed. I'd like to burn that data, but I can't, because many of the filenames contain weird characters (spaces, accents, things even worse that my XTerm displays as inverted question marks). So, mkisofs exits with an error.
    I'd like to clean that mess up, but it would take months to do that manually. Well, I only know a very little Bash, but I think this problem is already too heavy for my modest knowledge. Here's the problem:
    - check the contents of directory ~/backup recursively
    - find files whose filenames contain characters other than [A-Za-z0-9] and then maybe "-" and "_" and ".".
    - replace these characters either by an "_" or just erase them
    Now how would I translate that into a little Bash script?
    Cheers...

    Heyyyyy... nice idea

  • Why does Muse upload many pages when I only have Modified Files option selected?

    In Muse, when I use the "Upload to FTP Host" option (my preferred update method), Muse will load 37 pages (I have almost 70) even though I have made no changes whatsoever.
    I have read and implemented options suggested on this forum including this:

    Hi Ellen,
    It looks like your muse_manifest.xml file is corrupt. Please login to your BC site's admin, go to Site Manager > File manager and delete the muse_manifest.xml file. Publish the site again from Muse and select to publish all the files. Next time when you will publish the modified files only, it will work.
    Cheers!
    Aish
    I deleted the muse_manifest.xml file and selected the Upload to FTP Host option selecting the option "All Files".  Afterward there was no change.
    This is what happens:
    I edit pages and select the Upload to FTP Host option.  I have "Only Modified Pages" selected.  I have made changes to three or four pages.  Muse uploads 37 pages.  I made no changes to a master page.  The update said it was successful.  I click OK. I go to my site and pages are loaded properly.
    The very next thing I do is try another update and it loads 37 pages, although I have made absolutely zero changes. Not to a master, not to any page. The last thing I clicked in Muse was OK when it said the update was successful.  I do it again after changing nothing and 37 pages load.  It is not loading every page.  Just 37 (sometimes less, sometimes more).
    I do not have any alerts showing on my assets panel that Muse might be confused by.
    My Muse file is 55.4 MB (sizable, but nowhere near what others are dealing with.)
    Can you help me?
    Bruce

    Okay, I emailed the link to my dropbox awhile back but continued to work on the problem on my own as I did not hear back.  Maybe you never saw the email, who knows?
    Anyhow, I discovered that it was custom buttons that I had created in Photoshop, with layers.  They worked just fine in Muse in all four states, they worked just fine when published. They were added to my library but on every page that they were placed, that page loaded every time. I checked and rechecked the links.  I added them to the library for each page they were on. No dice. They still required that page be loaded every time
    It was definitely not worth the hassle so I deleted every one from my site and the site loads only modified pages perfectly now.
    Maybe some day I will dig deeper into why they did not work but not today.
    I hope that this helps someone.

  • What can I to run the system only with DAC card +accessories + lookout software

    That configuration for speed up and simplifing of system.

    Are you asking about NI's DAQ hardware and Lookout? The only way Lookout talks to DAQ hardware is via OPC. So, you'll have to use the DAQOPCServer for this. The speeds will obviously not be the same as when using DAQ VIs directly.
    Hope this helps. Please provide more details if you have any more questions in this regard.

  • Backup causing problems with IFS files being locked

    We are having occasional but significant problems with our regular IFS backups. The symptom is that random SAP batch jobs, or tp processes will fail overnight. These seem to be related to the IFS backup running at the time, and appear to be that batch jobs are unable to write their log file, or a tp process will fail due to being unable to access a file of some sort (usually log or /usr/sap/trans/tmp files).
    Is there a way of making an IFS backup 'online' so that it does not lock the files but simply gets a fuzzy copy of the file?
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks, Andy.

    Hi Andy,
    what you prefer, does not exist .... There is a special AS/400 IFS online backup - but this is properitry and is not specially supported.
    I would suggest to exclude the global directory /sapmnt/sid/global und /usr/sap/trans/tmp - as long as you backup the trans-dir this could always happen - even when FAR more rarely - because sometimes the other directories are needed as well.
    I typically setup the systems that way, that the global directories are not included. In your case you should exclude trans/tmp as well ...

  • QuickTime stutters only with .mpg files

    Only since I've updated to Mac OS X 10.5.2 that I've been experiencing this problem. I have a load of .mpg files recorded using my digital camera, as well as a bunch of files I've downloaded from the net. These used to play back perfectly fine and smooth in QuickTime, but now every few seconds there is a big stutter. The files aren't corrupt as every other media player plays them fine. Also, it is just .mpg files QuickTime is struggling with, any other supported format plays perfectly fine.
    The file codec is 'MPEG1 Muxed'.
    I've tried reinstalling QuickTime, the Leopard Graphics update and neither have provided me with any fixes.

    Why did you uninstall Perian? You need it!
    These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
    It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5.2, but please see my footnote).
    Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
    Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
    Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
    (You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
    In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
    You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
    If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
    Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
    and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
    In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
    Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
    Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
    Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
    You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
    Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1

  • Cold backup -- have only _.BKP file in my hand (XE 11G)

    I am trying to restore a backup (?????_.BKP) file that has been created on my Oracle XE 11g, and that is all I have in my hand - the database has been uninstalled and I have only the file.
    Any one have the previous experience in recovering data like this?
    Thanks,

    No, I have no previous experience in recovering from an incomplete backup, as it is something which isn't possible.
    If you don't have a RMAN catalog database, the control file functions as catalog.
    If you don't have a separate controlfile backup and/or a RMAN autobackup of the controlfile of that database, your database is RIP.
    Many people forget you make a backup to be able to restore and recover. And as they never test the restore and recover procedure, they run into unpleasant surprises.

  • Spinach (bash script)

    Hello,
    The other day I was talking in the IRC channel and mentioned a little script I wrote to download packages from the AUR. Somebody wondered how I would update packages... I hadn't thought that far into the future. However, now I have. I whipped up a little bash script. It does only the basics, but I was wondering if somebody could check it over and see if I'm doing anything horrendous. Sorry, the tabbing is messed up in a few places.
    Script: http://floft.net/uploads/spinach/spinach (also in the AUR)
    Description: http://floft.net/wiki/Scripts.html
    As for the name, I was going to name it "tower" since it's amazingly similar to "cower," but I didn't want to cause any confusion. Thus, I named it after a wonderful food.
    Note: The goal was to see how small I could make a functional AUR helper... I know there's a lot of perfectly good ones already.

    Odd that you would use both curl and wget. curl proves to be far more useful in the long run, doing everything that wget does (and more). Neat idea though. I've toyed with minimalist bash-based AUR helpers, as well as wrapping cower.

  • Running java in Bash script

    Hi all,
    I need to run a bash script in Linux which will then run a java program. I managed to run the script successfully (and running the java program eventually) by doing ./myScript. However, when my script is being called by some other programs, the java program doesn't run. I've check the classpath and path, seems everything is in place. I tried having this :
    java myjavaProg
    in myScript, it doesn't work.
    I also tried this, it doesn't work as well :
    java -classpath /usr/local/nagios/libexec myjavaProg
    Anyone has any idea why? Thanks in advance.

    I'd suggest editing your bash script, replacing the java call with one that invokes a class with a clearer sense of what it's doing. I mean, write a small class that creates a file in /tmp or something, so you can be more sure whether or not it's being invoked.
    Perhaps your java program is running, but it's behaving differently in these circumstances.

  • Mpc in bash script

    hi,
    I am trying to write a little bash script for adding all songs with the same artist as the currently playing song. Here is what I already have:
    artist=`mpc -f %artist% | head -n 1`
    search=`mpc search artist "$artist" | sed 's|mp3|mp3"|g' | sed 's|ganze|"ganze|g'`
    echo $search | mpc add
    the sed commands are for enclosing all paths in the list by "
    the point is that the last command doesn't work and I don't know why! if I type
    echo $search
    and copy the the output to the end of mpc add, mpd adds the songs to it's playlist. so my problem here is that mpc doesn't "eat" the content of the search-variable in the pipe. what am I doing wrong????
    thx in advance

    kittykatt wrote:Have you thought of surrounding the $search variable in double quotes in the last line? If there are spaces involved in that variable, then you'll most likely need them.
    As far as I know, echo doesn't care about quotes unless you're trying to preserve whitespace at the beginning or end of the line.
    # these are equivalent
    var='my awesome variable'
    echo $var
    echo "$var"
    # but these you need to be careful
    var=' my awesome variable with whitespace '
    echo $var
    echo "$var"
    Touche. It's been a long day for me, unfortunately. Starting to make slip-ups like that.

  • MDT2012 - Deployment failed, the system cannot find the file specified

    Hi everybody.
    First, excuse me for my english, i think it's not the best thing I'm able to do, but now, I REALLY need help.
    I encounter issues with my MDT 2012 Update 1 platform.
    I have 5 systems to capture. All systems have 3 partitions (System, softwares, data). Capture is working fine for all parts.
    In my Task Sequence, to deploy these images (C, D and E parts), I use a script after the "Install Operating System" which runs imagex to deploy the WIM images for D: and E:.
    The script is the following :
    "%DeployRoot%\Tools\x64\imagex" /apply "%DeployRoot%\Operating Systems\D_Drive\D_Drive.wim" 1 %DDrive%"
    But, for some images, the task fails on the "D" drive deployement. The wizard shows the following error :
    Litetouch deployment dailed, return code = -214767259 0x80004005
    Failed to run the action: InstallD (ie : the script above)
    The system cannot find the file specified. (Error: 00000002; Source: Windows)
    The error is on my task which uses imagex to deploy my D and E WIM.
    So I looked to see if the file's path was the good one.
    And it is !!!
    Wizard says that the file couldn't be find, but the file is existing, and in the good path.
    For your information, there is no problem when I don't use multicast. Everything is working fine on unicast, not on multicast.
    I even encounter this issue if I use my MDT server and my computers on the same switch.
    Any help would be gratefull, my client gives me the week to resolve the issue.
    Thanks
