Abnormally Slow Powermac G4

I have a powermac G4 that is now about 3 years old. I have used it frequently over those years and have never had a problem with it, but once I installed 10.4 all the user acounts have been extremely slow, except the original acount created which works fine. Every time I switch between a Program or go to the Finder it has to think for about 10 seconds before it will switch, and during those ten seconds it is unresponsive. Also, when on the user/ non- admin acounts, It tends to freeze an abnormal amount. (It usually freezes up about 3 or 4 times a day). I don't use the computer a whole lot, but my family does, and i've finally gotten around to asking about it. I've tried installing more memory, and that didn't work, so I was wondering if you had any other suggestions?

I've had similar problems ..not constant. But a real drag when it happens... - and I'm still at 10.4.3 ATM ..
I suspect Tiger in general of course - because my system has remained untouched and the probs only started after the upgrades ...
Activity monitor (and little 'procesor window') shows nothing strange (but then it is conceivable that IT may being affected too in some way and may not be being updated whilst the processor is actually looping at 100% frantically doing something else..)
my probs are same with orig main admin account.
LONG pauses unresponsive - incl to KBD [CMD-OPT-ESC, F9, F10, F12] - for changing apps, in finder... if things are bouncing in the dock .. they slow/stop/restrt/ in 200Ms jumps with larger gaps .. it'll even affect me when I'm typing a phrase omitting letters in what wd normally be in the type-ahead buffer - they don't appear at all - as if the processor etc is completely unresponsive - in bursts .. I have 768 meg of ram which shd be plenty for the load .. this 'keyboard' thing happens even when I don't notice 'unresponsiveness' - letters 'drop out' when I'm typing - as if I'm having short 'mini-freezes'... in addition to the long, noticeable ones (it's happening now as I type ...)
Like you, I tried more memory which immediately made the problem worse - AND introduced freezes etc - even tho latest techtools pro etc report that the mem tests ok ... going back strictly to my original mem config (same dimms, same slots..) helped somewhat .. - worth you checking - these beasts can be very finicky about memory .. - like witchcraft
The problems appear to get worse the longer it's been since cold boot. - Is this so with you? It also worst when more apps, more windows are in use ...
My 'sixth sense' for these things associates the probs with these :
* a Finder internal problem. - Sometimes I've done nothing but 'relaunch Finder' and the probs often go away a while ..
The system as a whole seems to do a lot of unnecessary paging (why page when there's plenty of free Real mem ?) Maybe there's a bug in memory handling somewhere.
* Spotlight - a suspect. [gonna try turning it off/disabling].
* Safari - a suspect. The problems appear to get worse if it is or has been running. I'm going to switch to Firefox exclusively for a while .. RSS may be part of it. Safari seems to need WAY too much real & virtual mem and eat too many processor cycles (like 280MB of Real and 580MB of Virtual for a few windows & tabs = 11 threads and regular jumps to 30% proc when it isn't really doing anything...... Why ? - those numbers look silly/incorrect)
*memory config changes .. check as advised. try resetting PRam.
* something in Dashboard. I may try disabling.
ON several occasions, the pauses hve [note that last word) turned into an apparent complete freeze - I try various things to cause an interrupt/change in status - unplug network/usb/KBD.. then back in .. no help .. yet, when I go to another system on the network, expecting no response, it responds to pings .. so I try SSH - a brief delay .. and I'm asked for a PW .. another .. and I'm in .. terminal IS responsive : TOP doesn't appear to show anything odd .. - I kill a few things and eventually responsiveness returns . I save what I can and cold boot.
I've noticed a number of times that SystemUIServer goes 'unresponsive/not responding'. Its Parent process appears to start additional Copies of it - but it IS unusual.
ATM, I'm toying with going up to 10.4.4 and whatever else there is . If that doesn't work, I guess it's back to the latest 10.3.x.
Have you made any changes to or had problems with USB lately ? I have a feeling it's also involved somehow.
Will advise.
Anyone with a similar set of probs, please DO post here . This is a weird one.

My iMac, OS 10.7.5, is abnormally slow on start-up, taking many minutes for my password sign-in window to show up.  I've run Disk Permissions and have verified my hard drive and all is in order.  What do I do to start up my Mac in a normal manner?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal  slow with nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !

I try everything, newest drivers (nvidia 8800 GTS 512), older drivers, beta drivers, alternative drivers, uninstall QTime, disable OpenGL in After Effects, delete openGL plugin.... Simply, did not help. AE CS3 is abnormal slow, type text, draw and edit mask, any kind of moving element , moving windows (interface).... everything. When turn on openGL, openGL work fine, fast, smooth., but non openGL operation (written above), still the same! I did some test and found that similar problem have with encore (not my primary application, but...). Other programs work perfectly (premiere, photoshop, illustrator). I have core2 quad 6600 @ 3 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 8800 GTS 512 @ 2560 x 1600, win XP pro strong configuration but unusable for AE CS3!!! I try to reduce resolution, but also, did not help.
Please, is there anyone with some solution? Is problem with AE or drivers? Thanks.

    >My 8800GT is not going to work with AE and it's listed under Adobe's
    >supported graphic cards????
That's premature to say. Please understand that in the OpenGL game there are just too many varaibles, a lot of them outside the control of Adobe or any other software vendor for that matter. Please consider the following:
    - if tested, a card is usually tested in one configuration available at the time that presumably will be the most common one bought by users. There is room for better sub-versions (more VRAM, higher memory clock), as well as weaker ones (less VRAM, lower clock speed).
    - the previous applies to the host computer. Nobody can test the 100 new different motherboards that come out every month let alone all that are already on the market. Same for RAM, processors, other peripherals.
    - multiple vendors may produce cards based on the same design, but may use different BIOSes and branding
    - even under ideal conditions, a given graphics card will be tested in about 30 different computer or so - some in Adobe's lab, others with Beta testers. As it stands, neither of them will necessarily coincide with your configuration nor will anyone throw a lot of money out of the window just to buy a hundred new testing machines...
    - BIOS configuration, motherboard voltage fluctuations, PCI timings and whatnot can vary from user to user and thus have drastically different influence how a certain component behaves.
    - lastly, driver configuration can vary. Even with seemingly the same driver version, the config may auto-adapt to different settings based on the environment it finds.
So given all of the above, please understand that this is a *******' tough job and by all rights nobody intentionally tries to scam users or something like that. You will also find it hard to blame anyone in legal terms, as you usually agree to use the software "as is" - with all it's flaws. As David says - please try first. We will gladly try to help you sort out any issues and who knows - none of the problems affecting other users may come down on you and you'll be a happy camper after all.

  • Abnormal slow import

My aperture importer plugin has been working away for about 90 hours now and is still on 23% . I have asked Adobe, and posted here, and I still can't decide what to do. Should I abandon or wait?
I am trying to import a 265GB managed aperture library into a managed lightroom catalogue which is on my main drive and the masters onto an external drive which is 1TB with 700GB remaining space. (my main mac drive has 150GB remaining and was bought in late 2013)
My Toshiba external drive is supposed to be 3.0 USB and is currently flashing or sticking on blue light, but sometimes I notice it's a white light. I read somewhere that white means it's only going on a 2.0 speed?? But even when it's on a blue light it seems slow. At 8pm last night it went up to 21% and it's now nealry 3pm the next day and it's still on 23%. When I look on the external drive, the folder of masters is only at about 55gb so far.
Other than the location of the masters on the external drive, i didnt get a chance to change any options, so I have no idea what previews are importing. I also don't understand if the xmp (?) lens data is importing or not. When you google for answers as a "layperson" it is incredibly difficult to get an idea of what's really happening.
What shall I do? Abandon? I can't bear to use Aperture anymore it's so slow. I want to use Lightroom. But I can't do the imports of my folder structure one by one, I would get so confused and i dont have time. And I haven't any guarantees that this automatic plugin thing will successfully reproduce my aperture project/folder structure.... do I????
The other question is, if my external 3.0 Toshiba drive, (bought a few months ago) is not trustworthy (because sometimes it's only operating at 2.0), should I actually be putting these on some other kind of drive? Like should I invest in a thunderbolt? To add to the annoyance I have just remembed that this particular external drive doesnt seem to work with my laptop, a macbook pro,, which is late 2008, it just doesn't even get recognised by it - so I can't take this drive with all my masters on away with me. Any clues as to what's happening here?

So ,I thought you all might like an update to my snail-pace import situation using the Aperture plugin. It was importing for a week and day and got to 31% - then unfortunately my computer suddenly crashed - I was asking it to do too many things at the same time.
I was interested to see how Lightroom had coped with the crash - I thought most likely Lightroom would not have managed to put in metadata or even remember any of the photos, let alone put them into correct project folders, but it has!!!
However - that is not of any use to me if I can't work out which photos from Aperture it has NOT YET imported, so that I can import them. After all, Aperture still has 69% of my photos still not yet imported into LIghtroom.
I don't know if the %31 of photos were moved or just copied out of Aperture (I have to try and check)
Can anyone think of a way I can now get the 69% into Lightroom manually, when I don't know exactly which they are? Otherwise Im going to get into mega confusion switching between albums in Aperture and Folder structure in Lightroom, trying to compare them!!!

  • Rendering - abnormally slow or normal?

    Hi folks,
I'm rendering a 2 minute piece of video imported as a Quick Time file (size = 2GB). It's just taken 35 minutes and is up to 6%.
It's the first time I've rendered a .mov file. I'm used to slow rendering, but this seems excessive. Is it normal?
I just read about Magic Bullet in this forum. Is that something anyone can shed light on for speeding up rendering in FCE?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi Tom,
The video file supplied on the disk is actually 122MB, but because I cannot import that file directly into FCE, I had to convert it to .mov first. To do this I used SnapzPro (video capture software). After capturing the video as a Quick Time file, it became 2.4GB.
I imported the .mov file into FCE, and then had to render.
6 files came on the disk, but only one plays the 2 minute segment. That one has a file extension of .VOB. The others have extensions .IFO and .BUP (don't know what they're for).
Does that shed any more light?
Thanks for the info on Magic Bullet.

  • Wifi Speed Abnormally Slow

The wifi download speed on my Macbook pro 15' retina is irregularly slow.
I just have my iPad placed side by side with my Macbook pro.
The download speed shown on the "speedtest" app on both of my iPad and iPhone is around 17 Mbps; while the download speed shown by the speedtest.net on my Mackbook pro is no better than 1 Mbps.
That 1Mbps result is very constant and thus it makes me think if there is something limiting the speed in the background.
Do you have any idea why it will be like this? Since I need to figure out if this is actually a hardware(airport card) issue.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013) OSX abnormally slow

    Hi,
I'm not sure why but my OSX is running much slower then before, weird thing is I don't even install many softwares in it. Below is the description of the issues I'm facing.
Beach ball frenzy, lots of things ended up with beach balls from switching back and forth between apps (safari and cad). Within app itself, safari freezes occasionally and then whatever I click during that time period (like opening a new tab, links in the page) will suddenly open and this goes on with other apps as well, even finder takes a few seconds to show the content.
Start up time : 14.2 sec
Waiting for shut down menu to appear : 15 secs
Click shut down: forever (monitor goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, but computer is not turned off)
Previously, whenever software update requires restart, os will just hang and give a grey screen error, this will cause my computer to be in a boot loop where turning off will show the same error as well. Only way I find out is to open in safe boot, apply update and all goes to normal but it seems the problem is not solved cause now my OS just doesn't work properly.
Oddly enough, I got no problem installing Yosemite.
I don't think it's hardware problem cause right now my windows 8 partition is running much faster then OSX. Oh the irony

  • Slow Powermac 2x3GHz DP

I´m using my new 2.3GHz DP PCI-Express with Logic 7.1. It´s slow on other startups as well.
But the machine is very slow when loading projects. In fact, it´s slower than my old G4 single 733MHZ!! The G5 is loaded with 4.5Gb RAM, so this is not the problem.I use a Lacie FW800 as well.I thought this machine should be lightning fast compared to my old one. Anyone else who has experienced this? Thanks.

Make sure the handbrake is off and the choke pushed right in.

  • IMac (Lion) abnormally slow

My console shows about 4000 messages re: errors, wrong filing, etc... Could these files explain the abnormally show pace of my iMac (24.-2.86 Ghz)? If so, how can I delete these files without causing many havoc elsewhere. Thanks.
Additional info:1)downloaded Sophos and scanned all my files, conclusion:no threats;2)rebooted with install CD to run Disk Utility, conclusion:all in order;3) ADSL connection is fine.

IMHO there is no need to run anything to clean up a Mac running OS X periodically. That is only required on PC which suffer from Windows rot.
If you want help on if the files can be deleted, you will have to tell us the names and locations of the files. Odds are they will probably cause no problems for you.

  • Upload speeds extremely, and abnormally slow 0.60 Mbs on average.  Help!

I am using the Pantech UML290.  I've had 4G coverage for over a year.  Always had a good signal.  Always got speeds at the higher end of the spectrum.  Signal strength -79 to -81.  My average download speed was 10-12 Mbs but often go up to 16.  Average upload was always 3Mbs but could jump up to over 5Mbs.  However, starting about two weeks ago, my download speeds are disturbingly low on a regular basis.  0.6Mbs on average.  This is any day of the week or any time of day.  At best it will peak up to 1.6Mbs on the upload, but never higher (and that was only on 3 different days during this two weeks.  It also didn't last long on those days).  Most of the time it's 0.6 or lower.
Now, since this issue started, my download speed has been consistently 14 - 16 Mbs.  Most of the time it's around 14.8Mbs.  I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the both the drivers, and VS Access manager.  I've tried multiple computers.  Same issue.  Now I'm pretty sure the UML290 is not the problem.  I've taken it to other areas that have had 4G coverage longer, and are more densely populated, and tried it during multiple times of the day.  During peak hours the download can very between 6Mbs and 13Mbs.  Off peak it's 14 - 16Mbs.  The upload is always over 2.5Mbs.  Most of the time it's over 3Mbs and has been as high as 6Mbs.  I also tested it on multiple computers during this part of the testing process. Again no issues.
So, what could have changed?  What could it be other than some problem with the tower near my house?  It's worked fine for over a year.  NEVER had a problem and I test it MULTIPLE times a week, and test it thoroughly.  Anyone have any idea what it could be?   I've called Verizon.  They are now on their THIRD service ticket.  They keep saying the same thing.  They say i'm in a "limited" coverage area and that's why the speeds are slow.  Well the coverage map says I'm in a good coverage area.  It always has.  I have a good signal.  I've never had a single issue for over a year.  My download speeds are excellent.  And now, all of a sudden, my upload speed goes to crap.  Also my latency (ping times) have always been excellent and still are.
Any suggestions or ideas?  Any Verizon employees on here that can escalate this to the point where someone actually puts some effort into finding the problem instead of just calling me and saying I'm in a limited coverage area when I'm clearly not?

Anyone have any suggestions?  I've found that Verizon tech support is quite useless with this issue.  As they have been with any other issue I have brought to them in the past.  It saddens me that I know more than they do about every aspect of every problem I have ever presented them with.  They no longer even respond to me about this issue even though I have had at least 3 service tickets open with them.  I gave up on calling them as I'm sure I'll get the same nonsense response.

I NEVER have a problem with Safari, but over the past two days it's become incredibly slow. It doesn't matter which wireless system I'm on, so I know it's not my home's wifi. Is anybody else experiencing this? Could it be from one of the updates I just downloaded?

    Hi!
have you tried reseting safari? That will empty out your cache, history, pretty much just clean it up. See if that works then get back.

  • Photoshop Opens new blank files abnormally slow...

Hay there, I got a couple issues I could use some advice on if any one happens to recognize the issues.
I've got a fresh cs6 install completely updated on a brand new PC with a fresh windows 8, barely even had the thing for 2 days yet.
CS6 opens just fine but when I go to open a new file it freezes up for like 5 minutes before eventually opening the file... after that it runs smoothly.
Then I've got a potentially unrelated issue were the system wont allow me to run some of my brush tool presets that I purchased recently... they worked fine on my old machine but on this new install I keep getting the error...
Could not load the tool presets because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.
I even attempted to purchase the brushes again to see if they were updated in some way.
Please tell me if you need more info to go one.

  • WINE abnormally slow when playing Starcraft

I used to have a 1.6Ghz computer with 512MiB of RAM. It ran Starcraft just fine in WINE, full speed and everything. So, like any normal person would I upgraded this box as soon as I could. I now have a 2.3Ghz quad-core with 2GiB of RAM. Big improvement, right? Well, I get about 3-5 FPS in Starcraft. I've tried running Starcraft.exe in compatibility modes for XP and '98. I've tried googling for literally hours and I can't find any solutions.
So does anyone have any ideas? The weirdest thing is that I can run Spore full speed and play it in full screen; I can play Black & White on high detail at a pretty big resolution. Why can't I play Starcraft, I should be able to run 18 instances of Starcraft at once?
I just want my Starcraft back!

Ok guys I think I have complete solution for playing starcraft on linux arch (but can be applied on any distro in general) with wine and being able to connect to battle net. I will assume that you have properly set your graphic card drivers which is crucial thing. Nvidia is preferable brand for linux gaming in my opinion and experience.
    1. Download wine tarball from aur repository and install it using makepkg -s and then sudo pacman -U "package name". It is for 686 architecture. This patched version of wine will allow you to play on battle net. It was optimized for warcraft 3 but it works for starcraft as well (both blizzard games ) )
               http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=27298
In this step we made starcraft playable on internet .
    2. In this step we will optimize starcraft to run without glitches, lag or mouse delay under wine. After you make some wine regedit modifications, starcraft should be able to run smoothly. You should do next:
       a) in terminal type: wine regedit
       b) position yourself to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D
       c) in Direct3D add the following String Values (right click/New/String Value) or in menu (Edit/New/String Value):
             I DirectDrawRenderer (value data: opengl)
             II OffScreenRenderingMode (value data: fbo)
             III RenderTargetLockMode (value data: readtex)
IV VideoMemorySize (value data: put your graphic card video memory size)  p.s. For example mine is 256
Ok, those were registry tweaks concerning starcraft performance. Lets go to the next step, step 3.
    3. Lets make some changes in winecfg. In terminal type winecfg. In applications window go add application and point to your starcraft.exe file. Mine is (/home/marko/Starcraft/StarCraft.exe) . Then mark Starcraft.exe and go to graphics tab and uncheck allow window manager to decorate the windows. The rest of settings leave as they were by default.
    4. In my experience, after adding those registry modifications and changes in winecfg I had some problems starting starcraft properly. I got distorted screen and couldn't see starcrat menu properly. I am using xfce4 and I figured out that after changing my window manager from xfwm4 to metacity, using compiz fusion icon, I had no problems. So, my suggestion for you is to use metacity window manager while playing starcraft. sudo pacman -S metacity
    5. The last thing I had to change is the keybinding for metacity. When I started playing starcraft whenever I clicked combo: right mouse click+ alt I got fast menu activated. Pretty annoying xD. If you have in mind that metacity is deafult window manager for gnome, logical conclusion would be that it can be changed in gnome-control-center:
         Go sudo pacman -S gnome-control-center
After it installs in terminal type gnome-control-center and go to windows option. In windows option change Movement Key option from Alt to Meta.
After all those steps I had perfectly playable starcraft under wine with opportunity to connect on battle net and play some games. Starcraft was performing faster than in windows in my case . The only thing I wasn't been able to fix is black screen in battle net lobby which is not that big of a deal but still annoying a bit. You can still see where to click and how to login and thats what matters the most.
Thats all. I hope its helps.
                     Kisses from Serbia.

  • Quicktime Export abnormally slow??

My source footage is XDCAM HD 1080i 35MB/s. My sequence settings are the same. The edit is about 82 minutes in length. All effects and transitions are fully rendered. I'm exporting a Quicktime reference movie, (not contained) and its taking over two hours?? At my job, I work in the same format, but my edits are 30 minutes, and when they are fully rendered, it takes less than a minute to export a Quicktime reference file. any suggestions??

I never find much satisfaction in solving a problem when you don't really know what solved it. I came full circle- ended up where I started and now it seems to have worked. I say "seems" because I won't know til I view the final bluray disc to be sure. The Quicktime movie is playing perfectly now.
In comparison the projects at work, I did recall one difference- that was that my work projects were actually filmed with XDCAM HD 25mb/s not 35. FCP actually interprets the 25mb/s codec has HDV. Weird, I know, so I changed my sequence settings to HDV, and rendered and exported. The resulting Quicktime file's audio was finally in sync, only the picture looked horrible. The digital blocking was so bad, it looked like I put a mosaic filter on it or something. So, in desperation, I reverted back to my original XDCAM 35mb/s codec settings. I did use Render manager this time to trash all my render files (maybe that was some secret fix?) and then I just exported a Quicktime file without pre-rendering the timeline. And this morning, the resulting Quicktime movie looks great and the audio is in sync. go figure.
I wish I could say I know what fixed it, but I have no idea.

  • My MAC is running very slow and i am a complete novice and don't know what to do. i have had my Mac since 2008 and its probably in a mess. if you can help i would be grateful. EtreCheck version: 1.9.15 (52) Report generated 8 September 2014 09:09:26

My MAC runs very slow. Rainbow wheel every time i try to go somewhere. Im a complete MAC novice. Only really use it for iTunes and email. the odd document here and there. The odd spreadsheet. Was brought up on a PC. I would imagine my system is in  mess. I think i downloaded that Mackeeper which i have just discovered was not a good idea. I found a thread about EtreCheck and it suggested i posted the report of my machine which i have done.I only have 2GB of space. Not sure how much i have left. My wife keeps putting photos on here like they are going out of fashion. Bought the machine in 2008 because everybody said you have a MAC. I've never really got to grips with it but at least it worked. Now it does not run very well at all. That spinning wheel is driving me mad. HELP please, never ever used a forum light this either so please go gentle on me. Cheers Paul

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
